Hopefully, this is the final Iggleverse attempt, final as in, I won't just randomly reset it. This is of course the pinned post so if you are just jumping in this is the post you will want to resort to!

A legacy usually has rules and this one is...completely different! This is what is sometimes called a plotacy, that means the only rules are for me to make it a good story!

Despite this, this is very much driven by gameplay, at least a good chunk of it. You're not going to get posed scenes for every thing, only for moments where I feel as a storyteller they are needed.

So there's no goal to fulfil an aspiration or for a sim in generation 3 to pet all the cats (although that is a good idea!) as it really is me playing my game and creating a story for it!

When it's hard to admit something you like is actually not great.

I understand the cry or better yet beg fans on some level when it comes to your favorite piece of media being endlessly criticized. Trust me, it doesn't feel good.

I'll speak from my own experience with my media that I loved and eventually had to admit it wasn't as amazing as I claimed I to be. I was a huge fan of yandere simulator, a game that is mostly known nowadays for both it's poor quality in coding and story telling and it's pedo developer, Yandere dev.

Before that controversy, I loved the game for its bright appeal, anime aesthetic and of course the easter eggs that came with the game to eliminate NPC'S in a funny way, I watched all the development videos on his YouTube channel, I visited his WordPress blog for any extra updates and probably the worst I've done: I've defended him against other channels calling out his bullshit after I was easily swayed by his hate and shame video. I was about 11 years old when I last defended him, not realizing that's exactly what Alex wanted his younger fans to do.

Yandere simulator itself is extremely gross. You've probably already heard of why but just in case someone seeing this hasn't, I'll explain. The game itself was about the protagonist, Ayano Aishi, on a obsession fueled quest to feel emotions by romancing a boy and the player has to eliminate 10 rivals over 10 weeks. What made it gross were the use of panty shots as currency that you used to have to crawl and look up at yourself if you wanted to use any of the tools in the games shop (Info-chan) the characters skirts are often flipping up when you run, one of the rivals is a sexy pedo teacher not meant to tell a story on SA but rather for self gratification, the UNDERAGE protagonist wears different underwear for special buffs and you get the idea that this game is a mess of code for something that is just a porn game being played by minors given how easy it was to download the game.

Other pieces of media I defended as amazing at all times are Helluva boss and Hazbin hotel. They aren't nearly as awful as yandere simulator and for the most part, I can still watch them without feeling intense disgust, but as much as they shows are guilty pleasures, they still have problems that needed to be called out.

Hazbin hotel has objectively more issues than its youtube cousin. Mostly just minor pet peeves that don't actually ruin the entire story such as too much of the same color scheme and many characters having the same skinny body type. Those are all flaws though that can easily be attributed to the shows tumblr esque artstyle that can be really appealing. However, it messes up with its portrayal, I see what Hazbin tries to do with Angel Dust, I am not a victim of SA so I will not be inserting my own opinions if the depiction of someone coping with the trauma with hypersexuality was done well but I have looked through reviews of Angel Dusts character who have gone through SA and it was overall a mixed bag, that it was okay but ultimately tarnished by the fact that the storyboard artist Vivzie put in charge for that episode was someone who has a rape fetish and even ships Angel with his abuser, Valentino.

Helluva boss is a little better in my opinion but it still has several of its own issues. Characters aren't allowed to actually be flawed and generally repent for being assholes because there's always some sad sad backstory that completely justifies them being assholes by inserting someone who's entirely worse. It kinda takes away from the fact that the characters are demons and would naturally act dickish to people considering how vulgar they are. I feel Helluva boss does actually try to make a good story since there are many episodes that aren't too bad, my favorite episodes are actually the shorts of the crew doing their job as assassin's which I really miss compared to the constant drama and the 3 year long "Will they? Won't they?" Between Stolas and Blitzø.

And not that's even mentioning the excessive swearing.

Now that I'm older, I can see how labeling anyone who criticized my favorite shows/games as mindless haters who just didn't get how amazing it is was childish. I know nowadays that critique and criticism are absolutely necessary when you have a flawed piece or media or a problematic creator. I don't blame Van Ji for adapting COBYB considering how tight money is but I still will criticize Solche for how vile COBYB is regardless of their talents. This doesn't mean sending them death threats or doxing their location but rather making my own complaints where anyone who wants to can join in.

There are times when you have to admit something you are attached to isn't that great and I know it can be especially hard if it's a special interest but instead of listing paragraph after paragraph on why the "haters" are just stupid for not seeing the hidden "message" of how Matthias is actually misunderstood. Take your time to listen to their perspective, why they hate it so much and have your own civilized discussion about why its good or bad, and agree to disagree, I despise remarried empress with a passion but I still like to listen to remarried empress fans explain their view on the story when the conversation is actually civil and not an hour long internet debate.

If you are a big fan of cry or better yet beg and are only looking for positive things about it, I implore you to look somewhere else because aside from my love for the Van Ji's beautiful artstyle, I have nothing positive to say about any of Solches work aside from mystical.

I don't personally believe Tumblr is shutting down anytime soon, from what other longer-term users have been saying this is far from the first scare. However what I will say is that I will likely fuck off completely if that's the case because I don't like the look of most other social media. As much as I trash Tumblr as a platform I do have an odd level of comfort here that I don't anywhere else.

Of course, where CC is concerned there's always my SimFileShare and MediaFire links which most are still functioning (SimFileShare CC is up to date, MediaFire isn't always. And of course there's my Patreon for all CC. If I ever make CC again, and let's say for the sake of theory that Tumblr does disappear, then I will be posting it there.

My main story blog is also here if anything happens to Tumblr, and Blogger blogs can actually be followed using Wordpress and the new posts or chapters will come up in Reader (at least, they did when I tried it on my own blog with my own Wordpress.)

Tommy & Bruiser Part 1

I will be posting these in sets of 6 days & an extra prompt here on Tumblr, and then when I complete all the prompts, I'll be posting on my WordPress site.

Day 1-Flame

The shivering mess hadn't been from anywhere near where the flames were. Still, Tommy was sure the dog wouldn't want to be let down anytime soon.

Tommy was on his break now, and the dog hadn't left his lap. He was in the back of the ambulance, giving the dog oxygen. Miriam had tried to get the dog to settle down and let her take him, but the dog had been unwilling to let her touch him. Only him. 

"You are stuck with him; you know that, right?" Miriam asked.

"Yeah, I know." Tommy wasn't mad, though, not yet. 

He knew that since he found the dog alone with its owners dead. Tommy had adopted a dog. Fun.

Day 2-Family

Tommy didn't have a lot of people he considered family. His birth family was either dead when it came to the people that he actually wanted to be around or were pieces of shit. He was looking forward to the day that his father died, but he hadn't been blessed with that yet. 

The thought of having someone to come home to was kind of scary, even if it was a dog that could fit in a purse. The dog was a diva of the highest order, but then again, that was kind of a given for the breed. Tommy had never seen himself getting a Chihuahua before this. Never thought it would take days to love anyone.

Day 3-Abandon

"I did not abandon you. You certified diva." Tommy picked up Bruiser from where he was hiding in the bed, where Jake had said that he spent the whole day unless Jake had forced him outside or fed him. 

Bruiser licked his face and tried to burrow into his skin. Tommy looked at the bedroom door.

"That dog loves the shit out of you," Jake said from the doorway. 

"I know, he's also a diva." Tommy didn't care. He did love the damned dog. Even if he pretty much fits in his hand. 

"You still coming to breakfast?"

"If I can bring Mister Diva."

"Of course, you don't go anywhere without him now." 

Tommy just smiled at him. 

Day 4-Countdown

Tommy waited for it. He pulled the blanket up his body to where he was snug inside. It was snug under the covers of the bed because he had been there a while. He heard Bruiser getting the run on in the living room after his snack that Tommy had hidden around the house for him to find. 

The sound of claws on the kitchen floor echoed to him, and then he started the countdown. 

Four.

The sound of a body into a wall when the floor didn't stop him. 

Three.

More claws.

Two.

A body against the wall.

One.

The thump on the door.

Zero.

A flying body on the bed that felt heavier than it was.

Day 5-Locker

Tommy opened his locker, smiling at the picture of Bruiser there. Miriam had taken it and sent it to him, and he had printed it off. 

"I told Jake you were going to become one of those dog owners," Miriam said as she closed her locker and turned to face him fully. 

"What kind?" Tommy got what he needed from the locker and shoved his newest book. He wasn't done with his other yet so that he would finish it first. It depended on how much time he had at work. 

"The kind that treats the dog like a kid, which you did with that plant, too."

"Still do."

"Kinard, don't change. For love or money, don't change." 

Day 6-Grievance

"Okay, Bruiser, what the hell is your grievance today?" Tommy looked at his dog and frowned. 

Bruiser was sitting on the arm of the couch, growling at Tommy every time he tried to pick up the remote to start their movie. Their snacks were laid out, and even a dish for water for Bruiser was on the coffee table. Everything was in place for their night of movies before the pizza got there. 

Tommy hit play, and Bruiser jumped off the arm and rammed into Tommy's arm. 

"The hell." Tommy paused the movie and looked at his dog. 

Only to realize the damned soft bed was an inch off where Bruiser liked it beside Tommy. 

"Damned diva dog."  

Extra-Dosed

"You are getting dosed, and you'll like it." 

Tommy glared at where Bruiser was trapped in the kitchen with the baby gate. He should feel like a mean person for being so big and looming over the dog, but it was just a damned pill to help with the dog's UTI after Bruiser had played in cat poop on a walk. Tommy had been chatting with a neighbor and didn't see until he was covered in poop. 

Getting on his knees, Tommy caught Bruiser and held out the pill wrapped in chicken. "Don't spit it out this time."

The chicken was gone a moment later, and the pill was on the floor. Tommy sighed. "Fine. You get cheese."

If my cantankerous boss would have summoned me at 03:03 pm EEST (when your request landed in my inbox), just to tell me "Imma need an in-depth breakdown of the Greek trade unions' position on the current critical understaffing of the HoReCa sector", I would have politely answered "yes, ma'am, when is the deadline". I would have then turned on my heels, rolled my eyes, sworn like a drunk sailor under my breath (fuck my life comes to mind, pardon my French) and quickly be done with it.

That being said, since the question has been asked by several people in the comment threads of the day's posts, I am gonna give you my two cents on Queen Pufflander, even if you've been around before I even knew this weird place existed. And hopefully put to rest this nonsense forever (wishful thinking, doubt it will happen).

Once upon a time, when S&C's bantering was the plat du jour on Twitter and this fandom a considerably less toxic place, Puff the Magic Dragon of the US East Coast was one of the Queen Bees of Shipperville. Her blog was witty and no-nonsense (if a tad verbose) and, as *urv, she quickly earned her fair share of side performers: Stella and Deep Throat (SOURCES) or the tarot reader(s) immediately come to mind. People loved Puff and that is only fair, to be honest: I bet the farm she was great fun. Little by little, information traded in DMs started to pile up in her famed Vault, from which she was generously sharing, from time to time, sibylline rants ("maybe they did or maybe they didn't, but don't worry, something happened and all shall soon be revealed"). I can critique that forever and a day and tell you that all this sent people's expectations up the roof and beyond, of course. But, again: I was not here. It is unfairly easy to judge all these things with a historian's eye, and people who lived to tell the tale are far more entitled than me to comment their fandom experience, circa 2015.

When the whole Shatner/Watchtower baliverne started (early 2016, if memory serves) things ugly escalated and rather quickly so. People started jumping ship. With McSideburns already in the house (EIFF comes to mind and a certain poignant S&C penguin picture, too), enter Flukenzie Floozy. Thus, after IFH, Puffy decided to pack her crystal ball & tent and move to greener pastures on Wordpress. There, she held court with a keen eye for the Byzantine politicking of this fandom, not unlike what Perfidious Albion did with regard to the Thirteen Rebelling Colonies, after that Boston Tea Party. Her main moments of intersection with the rest of the shipper community are Covfefe Pics (of course) and Remarkable Week-end (of course). With regard to Covfefe, she quickly cried wolf, but by the time Remarkable Week-end happened, she pulled off a mighty witty breakdown of The Nuptial Charade of the Century. Blaze of glory was Quarantein Ha-wa-wee (of course), when she blamed S for all the world's evils and then some more. After that, she concentrated on her Neverending Feud with *urv (a Private Investigator was, at some point, hired and paid for via crowdfunding), which somehow managed to end (nevertheless) with a Report she might or might not have sent to S, "for further consideration".

As all good prophets, Puffy finally went into Occultation circa 2021, not without warning us that she was torn between Gay Sam & SamCait intellectual traditions, with a wee penchant for the first (reason why I completely ditched her peddling, because IYKYK).

I can understand why people might think I could be Puffy. I am, however, very sure about my own identity, whereabouts and creed: to state the opposite would really, really be mental. I fully assumed my responsibility and went ahead to actually prove you, this morning, I wasn't. Reading her rants was useful, but also taxing. I doubt Stella and Deep Throat were anything else but narrative helpers in a sophisticated Greimas actantial model. Something I would never do, for example: I am confident enough not to need any crutches. And I am very, very sorry for this word vomit: it should come, perhaps, as solace its length could never compete with Puff's storytelling marathons.

Brianna: I have to have them, but I insist on paying you for them. I’ll meet you at the register.

Bri has judged right; those earrings could sell for over 1000 simoleons. But in his eyes, they now belong to her, and there’s no way he’s charging her full price for them. Having her here today is payment enough, but he tries to settle on a price she’d accept.

Dwight fumbles around upstairs a moment before finally joining Bri downstairs. She agrees to his deflated price and pays him.

Brianna: Thanks Dwight. I’ve taken enough of your time. I still need to find a gift and head to my office party.

Bri turns to leave. Dwight hesitates, then rushes over before she makes it to the door. He clears the nerves from his throat.

Dwight: Before you leave, I wanted to ask one thing.

Bri stops and faces him.

Brianna: What’s that?

Dwight pulls out a rose he was saving for one of his flower arrangements and presents it to Bri.

Dwight: I know this might sound odd because you just met me. But I was hoping you’d allow me to take you to dinner. I mean, I’d understand if you -

Bri stops him mid-sentence and accepts the rose.

Brianna: That’s so sweet. Of course, I’d love to.

Dwight can’t believe his luck. Was that a ‘yes’?

Dwight: Really?

He doesn’t mean to sound so unsure of himself, but he’s never exactly had women beating down his door.

Brianna: Yes. I was hoping you’d ask to avoid me stopping by every day until you did.

Dwight can’t believe his ears. He stands there staring at Bri, admiring her beauty, feeling completely dumbfounded.

Brianna: Look me up on Social Bunny under Brianna Blu. So will I see you soon?

Dwight: Yes – very soon.

She turns to leave again.

Dwight: Thanks for stopping by -

Dwight keeps the last part to himself, ‘and changing my life forever.’

Meridia On Earth: the Sunlight, the Black Hole

A LARGE PART OF TES POLYTHEISM TODAY IS HOW IT OPERATES IN THIS WORLD, and how the divine fits within. Azura is rather easy to understand here—a gatekeeper of heaven, who opens up the night and day, and a queen of the night sky. Boethiah can be witness within revolutions and will to end oppressive empires, Akatosh in time, Mara in marriage, etc. However, I have begun to think of Meridia and her relationship to Mangus: and with some discussion with my fellow dear TES polytheists, I have found Meridia in the sunlight—and the dark star. This will mostly be a structured rambling of my beginning thoughts upon Meridia upon Earth, which should really be taken with a grain of salt, so let us begin: 

SUNLIGHT, MERIDIA, AND THE GREED OF LIGHT 

One particular aspect of Meridia I can understand as a kin of draconic nature is greed—but we take it in different forms. Meridia is known for her greed of people and her hatred of free will: rather preferring to have her will as all-consuming. Rather inspired by the darker interpretation of light, I have come to see Meridia in the sunlight—and light seeks to touch all, photons bursting forth to output energy. This is by no means a revolutionary take, she is depicted as the sun in the Skyrim tarot deck, but the possible mechanisms of how are what I am fascinated with. 

Energy is the process of life, which for a goddess of light, is only natural. 

The Red Star. Harbinger of Dawn. Second Daughter of … She is the Light of … who bore witness to the Crucible of Creation. … Refraction within reason … Goddess Who Holds […] Free will is to be surrendered to passion … destiny is fulfilled for the vessel … Radiant in times of … blinding the Dragon and bending his form … Mirror of the Lie … revealing purity in chaos with fervor … that false-life might be abolished … with the fire of new light may the Mundus be reforged.

The aspect of reforging Mundus could perhaps refer to her hatred of the undead. Meridia often seeks to conform things to her will and loathes the undead, which are contrary to her nature as life. Her father Magnus designed Mundus, yet ended up abandoning his plans. Meridia as his daughter—well, I would not be surprised if she wished for the father’s plans to be complete, and the impurity she sees arising from his light not being honoured. 

Her nature of refracting light is further expanded upon by in-game commentary on the Exegenis of Merid-Nunda, similar to how the coloured rooms refract light: 

A curious passage indeed. The “Dragon,” of course, traditionally refers to the Divine we know as Akatosh, the God of Time. This seems to suggest that by traveling the “rainbow road” (a reference to the prismatic refraction of light?), Meridia can in some sense alter the rate at which time flows forward. Altering the “speed” of time? Is this merely an absurd conceit of the late Ayleid sorcerer-priests, or a genuine insight into the nature of one of the least-understood Daedric Princes? Who can say?

Time for us humans—beyond the bounds of capitalistic senses of time and clock—is relative to the light of the sun, the moon, and the cycles they are bound within. When I think of her blinding Akatosh and creating dragon-breaks, I think of the way light defines our melatonin production, our idea of day, and the lunar cycle of which people of old defined their months by. Her time bending abilities obviously extend beyond this, but Sunlight is certainly an aspect of time. And her being called a Mirror of the lie: this is once again speculation, but if Magnus’ plans were abandoned and as such Mungus is flawed, then some could view Mundus as in need of reforging.

While silly to realise despite it being so obvious, Meridia is the prism of light. Through her light is filtered, and that is why she can stretch across a rainbow road. The coloured rooms were made through light being refracted within herself—and with this knowledge of her prismatic nature, she is the origin of the rainbow. A constant movement of light—the Daedra are change, afterall. She may not have originally been a daedric prince, yet she fits in rather well through that lens. Refraction also seeks to make light its own separated hue, which is a fun more UPG way to view her greed. She is the sunlight and refraction of light and light seeks to illuminate and refract all. And light spreads as much as it can, just as she tries to go as far as she might.

The Exegesis of Merid-Nunda also speaks of her being unfearing of the dark;

“… thus we call upon Cenedelin to bind the earth, as we speak to Merid-Nunda regarding the light, for she is the scintilla that fears not darkness, and swims the waves of pull and spin ….”

Cenedelin in particular references the Ayleid king of Delodiil defeating the Molag Baal worshipping city of Abagarlas. Scintilla means “a tiny trace or spark of a specified quality or feeling,” making her the courage against the dark. Light has no fear of darkness, for it conquers and illuminates all. 

MERIDIA, THE BLACK HOLE 

Another theory to Meridia is that she is, within essence, a black hole. Black holes bend light and time as they consume, which aligns with Meridia’s nature of being able to warp time and her greed—black holes consume everything, which poetically, is likened to that of ideal mortal greed. She is a star who fell when consorting with illicit spirits as the lore says, which could be seen as the collapse of a star that creates the black hole. This interpretation is not one I am quite familiar with, but certainly one to intrigue. The source given to me goes into it far better than I could, so I shall link it here. 

THE DAY CYCLE 

Something I have noticed is that Azura, unlike many dawn goddesses of other religions, is her stronger connection to night compared to day. While ESO does depict her star in more the shape of the sun, Azura’s star is meant to be analogous Nirn’s Venus[1]—and our own, on Earth, the star of dawn and dusk. For myself, being a multi-tradition pagan, when I was coming to understand Azura in this world, I thought of Thesan and Eos. Both are far more associated with Hemera, Helios, and Usil—and not quite as strongly with Nyx, Selene, Cilens, and Tiur. 

While Azura is the one who releases Magnus into the sky, she is not nearly as associated with the day compared to night—and this is where I see Meridia shine. And in an obvious lore sense, she is called the Harbinger of Dawn.This puts her as a forerunner of the Dawn cycle, so when Azura opens the day, Meridia and Magnus’ light pours through. On a deeper aspect, Meridia reflecting the sun’s light through herself may be the way she is the daedra of life: by reflecting it, it shines upon the world, allowing for all manners of crops to grow. Her energy is infinite in this sense—as long as Magnus produces light, she can bend it into another will. The will for light to give energy to life, while Azura’s light rules magic and liminality. 

Perhaps that is her idea that free will should be replaced with passion. Such passion begets energy, and free will often ends passions and seeks to replace it with one’s own design. As a daughter of Magnus, who seeks to reforge this world—wouldn’t Meridia loathe a mortal’s ability to completely alter fate, no matter how much time and light she bends?

Making Bindrunes

If you type in Google "bindrunes" several different ones will come up stating what they mean "protection", "good fortune" etc. People will even get those tattooed. Bindrunes are personal and I don't believe you should get a Google one tattooed or even use it in your workings, I also feel this way about sigils and will talk about this in a separate blog. But for now in this blog, I will teach you how to make your own bindrune.

As a beginner witch I can understand wanting to Google everything, hel even people will tell you to do so. To be honest I think that's wrong, misleading, and lazy. Google is not "your friend" and doesn't always have the correct guidance. I read a lot of books, which majority of my knowledge has come from, of course with a little bit of my own personal touch because after all it is my magick.

What is a bindrune?

A bindrune is two or more Runes that are superimposed on each other. The Runes combined together form a single symbol that amplifies their combined magical energies. Personally I do not use more than 3 separate Runes as I feel it's purpose gets lost in translation the more you add, so I suggest no more than 3.

How can you draw them?

The runes can be backwards, sideways, upside-down or any angle. You don't have to keep them in their original position or think you are putting them in a reversed position like in Tarot when you pull a card upside down and has a negative meaning. You can even repeat the same rune more than once depending how you want the bindrune to look.

I am going to show you an example of a Bindrune so you get the gist.

My goal for this bindrune is for wisdom, divine communication, increase intuitive and psychic abilities. I have chosen 2 runes for this one: Laguz and Ansuz [I will dive deeper in another blog about the Futhark Runes and their meanings]

This is the completed look and I will now break them down for you in two additional separate photos highlighting the two runes

With the example I have given you here I could have just made it even more simple and just put both runes and not repeated them. Bindrunes are personal, how you choose to design them is up to you.

Foreshadowing in The Stepford Wives (1975)

Foreshadowing is an important storytelling technique that plants breadcrumbs that the audience can follow as a story unfolds. In horror films such as The Stepford Wives (1975), foreshadowing helps to create suspense in addition to creating a sense of retrospective inevitability that gives the film coherence as a whole once we reach the end of the story. Foreshadowing in The Stepford Wives, particularly, is pretty heavy-handed, although it is weirdly effective even so. It's possible that this heavy-handedness is just a convention of the horror genre, but I can't speak to that as a general rule because horror isn't something I watch very much.

I'm not going to go through and make a complete catalogue of all the incidences of foreshadowing that happen throughout the film. There are only a few that I really want to discuss in any detail, starting with some more generic foreshadowings and then moving on to the ones that affect the main character, Joanna Eberhart (Katharine Ross) most directly.

Of Men and Mannequins

One of the early foreshadowing incidents happens within the first few minutes of the film. The Eberharts are getting ready to leave New York City for Stepford, and while Joanna is waiting for Walter, she looks across the street and sees a young man carrying a naked store mannequin across the street. Joanna, an aspiring photographer, is intrigued by this, and so she gets out her camera and starts snapping pictures.

The foreshadowing here is very obvious: although she doesn't know it, Joanna is getting a preview of what she is to become—a very sophisticated, very expensive mannequin.

Digging a Grave

In act II, Joanna makes friends with Charmaine Wimperis (Tina Louise), an avid tennis player who convinced her husband Ed (Franklin Cover) to buy their house because it came with a tennis court. When Charmaine gets Stepfordized, Ed hires a bulldozer crew to come and dig up the tennis court, ostensibly so that he can put in a pool instead. Joanna and her friend Bobbie Markowe (Paula Prentiss) are shocked that not only is Charmaine letting Ed dig up her beloved tennis court, she actually adores him for it.

Of course Charmaine's behavior telegraphs something of what will eventually happen to Bobbie and Joanna once they have been turned into robots, in that they will no longer have any will of their own except to meet their husbands' needs and stroke their husbands' egos. But more chilling is the last shot in this scene, which is taken from the point of view of someone who is inside the hole being dug by the bulldozer as the bulldozer pushes in a pile of earth. The Stepford women don't voluntarily leave their feminist ways behind: they are killed and buried and replaced with robots.

The Yellow Wallpaper

The very first thing we see at fade in is the wallpaper in the bathroom of the Eberharts' New York apartment. The wallpaper is a lively print of yellow leopards in a flowering tree. Joanna opens the medicine cabinet and regards herself in the cabinet's mirror. As she does so, the focus of the camera changes such that the wallpaper reflected by the mirror in the background blurs out a little bit. When Joanna steps out of frame, the focus of the camera remains unchanged: the yellow leopards are still blurry. Then Joanna closes the medicine cabinet door. Neither Joanna nor the leopards are visible any longer; the camera is too close to the mirror to show us a clear image, so all we get is a pattern of vertical lighter and darker stripes, also in soft focus.

This seems to be creating the leopards as a metaphor for Joanna herself. In New York, she is a living being, an elegant, intelligent woman with goals and a good life. Her transition from New York to Stepford is the beginning of the end for her, and just as the leopard wallpaper blurs out and shifts to greyscale stripes as Joanna steps away from and closes the mirror, so too will Joanna's identity and life become a blur until nothing is left of the living being at all. The door of her life will close, and it won't reflect either herself or the richness that life has to offer any longer.

The Empty House

The scene in the bathroom cuts to a shot of Joanna sitting on a windowseat alone in her empty New York City apartment. She is pensive and sad. She doesn't want to leave the city to move to Stepford.

We then follow the travels of the family as they drive out of New York and into Connecticut. The kids rush into the house when the family arrives, excited to see their new home. Joanna follows more slowly. She walks into the empty house and looks around, still pensive and sad. The initial shot is taken from the top of the stairs, making Joanna seem very small and lorn, while the second shot, taken from Joanna's POV as she stands near the front door, makes the house seems cavernous, with its bare hardwood floors, high ceilings, and pristine white walls and doors.

Joanna has a rich inner life as a woman and an aspiring photographer who is passionate about her art, but both the New York City apartment in the very first scene and our first look at the inside of the Stepford house show us how empty and barren Joanna's life is about to become. Her body will become a shell intended for the service of the actual humans who live with it, and nothing of the human woman will remain.

Windows of the Soul

The focus on Joanna's face and eyes in the very opening scene of the film wasn't chosen at random. This foreshadowing moment especially comes full circle through the end of act III and into the denouement.

We can see that Joanna has grey (or maybe hazel) eyes in the cap where she's looking in the bathroom mirror. Her eyes and their color become significant at the end of the film, when Joanna has been tricked into going to the Men's Association building, where Dale "Diz" Coba (Patrick O'Neal) is waiting for her, along with a partially activated android-Joanna. The android-Joanna's eyes are completely black; real-Joanna got there earlier than expected, and so the android isn't quite finished yet.

In the denouement that follows, we meet the fully complete android-Joanna. The camera moves closer and closer until Joanna's face blurs, mirroring the blurring of the leopards in the bathroom scene, and then finally focuses in on her eyes, which are now brown instead of grey.

The transformation is complete: not only is Joanna's mind gone, but her body has been irrevocably changed as well to meet Walter's own personal tastes (including bigger boobs), and the story has come full circle.

My Drama CD translation workflow

The first Drama CD I ever translated is One-Day Store Manager. That was in July 2022, nearly two years ago. Until recently, the workflow was simple, at least on the surface. I listened and either typed out the first thing that came to mind or looked up what I heard in jisho. If the sentence was long and complicated, I would listen to it at half-speed a few times, transcribed it into romaji and tried to figure out the translation as I stared at the transcription. Obviously, it was a slow and painstaking process.

During the past few years, rapid progress has been made in the fields of machine transcription and translation. Even back in 2022, I had the nagging feeling that things could be sped up.

Last April, I finally did it. After scouring the world wide web, I cobbled up some python scripts to do a couple of things.

1. Automatic transcriptions from mp3 files. Yep. This removes the major pain in the neck. However, as they say in computer science, garbage in garbage out (GIGO). The quality of the transcription depends on the audio quality of the mp3 file, of course. The amount of corrections I have to make is correlated to the bitrate. If the quality is good, I only have to correct about five percent of the transcription.

2. Automatic translation. Not so great, but it takes away the hassle of translating simple sentences and stock expressions. It is equivalent to copying and pasting into Google Translate site, but in bulk. Again, the GIGO principle applies. Hence the importance of making sure the Japanese text makes sense in the first place.

I will use a short scene from Kyouka Suigetsu to demonstrate the advantages and the pitfalls of automation in Japanese to English translation.

The speech to text output is a chunk of text, sans punctuation and indication of who is speaking. The script is particularly bad at transcribing our guy’s names. Hakkai is either eight floor, destruction, eight times or Bajie. (The last is not technically wrong, though.)

Here is how the translation looks like. Of course, it is also a chunk of text.

Here is the edited transcription. I corrected the obvious mistakes and indicated who is speaking at the beginning of their lines.

Again, GIGO. The output of machine translation this time is much better. It is not perfect, but I find it so much easier to re-translate with the Japanese text just below each line.

Still, the fact that even the automatic translation from the automatic transcription makes more sense than a translation made by a human being nearly twenty years ago is a testament to how far the transcription and translation technologies have come. The fears expressed by some professional translators are far from unfounded.

The day Google Translate matches a human translation more than ninety-five percent of the time is the day yet another job becomes obsolete thanks to AI. (Yes, I’m quite pessimistic about this. Why are we letting AI do all the fun stuff [art, writing, translation] and none of the soul-crushing or dangerous jobs?)

So now that you all have gotten a grasp on the theme, let me give you a gist of this fiesta! We'll be conducting this for the rest of the month i.e. June 2024. There will two main types of prompts:

1. Moodboards

These will be released every 4-5 days or so for you guys to ponder and come up with anything based on or inspired from the prompt (even if sometimes it ends up looking nothing like the prompt itself 🤭) and we'll be happy to reblog your creations, even if it's a three paragraph story or any kind of edit or if you want to try your hand at fan-art but have never been able to sit down and create something— take this opportunity to start creating!

2. Word Prompts

These will be filler prompts for days in between moodboard prompts so that people can keep creating! You can also combine word prompts with any of the moodboards according to your liking, there's absolutely no restrictions. Also, even if there are new prompts, you can still create based on the old ones (again, no hard and fast rules here!)

There's no particular guidelines to this Fiesta so create whatever feels right to YOU! There's no wrong or right! And if you have any questions, please feel free to ask us in the comments, through asks, or you could even dm them if you're feeling particularly shy!

If you're too worried about putting out your content then you can of course send it to us privately and we will post it for you while maintaining all privacy that we can!

In regards to how you want to post, there are several options like:

1. You want to post an edit on YouTube/Instagram/Tik tok or you want to post some writing on Wattpad/Ao3/WordPress or something that doesn't directly get posted to Tumblr— that's completely alright! Just make sure to tag this blog @arshifiesta, make sure you use the hashtag #IPK 13th Anniversary Fiesta and a link to whatever moodboard/word prompt you're using!

2. You want to post something on other websites as mentioned above but also want to post them here or add introduction and links that direct you to other websites— Sure you can! Again, make sure to tag us and use the proper hashtag so that we can reblog all submissions/creations!

3. You want to post on Tumblr itself but aren't sure how to go about it? Okay, so if this is the case then we suggest that you refer to this post by jalebi which will give you a flexible format to use. Mention the prompt (hyperlink it if possible!), share your work and then tag our blog and use the proper hashtag!

Note: Although, there aren't any age restrictions for submissions, we request you to add community label (mature) wherever necessary!
