Word Wanderings Post #1 – The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater
This is the beginning of a reread. I’ve loved this author for years and The Raven Cycle is a particular favourite of mine. Please note that if you haven’t read this book, this post will definitely contain spoilers!
The Raven Boys is the first book in a quartet and juggles a multitude of characters, including our four main characters (Gansey, Ronan, Adam and Blue) and our plus one (Noah). While it does have some external conflict, it is mainly driven by the characters and their relationships with one another. This book is complex and dense with detail, with a structure that is a little unusual. Most books or series have a driving hook that catches readers right at the beginning and is the selling tagline. For example, in the Percy Jackson series by Rick Riordan, it’s Percy finding out he’s secretly a demigod, which directly turns into monsters attacking him and his mom disappearing. In the Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, it’s the existence of a game that forces children to fight to the death and then subsequently Katniss volunteering to take her sister’s place at the Reaping. In Six of Crows, it’s a crew of six misfits embarking upon an impossible heist.
Ostensibly, the hook of this book is that Blue is destined to kill her true love with a kiss. That’s what it says on the back of the book, and it’s certainly an overarching threat present for the rest of the series. Tied in as well is Gansey’s search for Glendower, a sleeping king Gansey believes is buried somewhere on a ley line. This is another whole-series thread. The real heart of the story, however, is the boys and Blue and their friendship and their interactions with the other messy pieces of their lives and their search to find meaning and happiness. This type of storytelling is not for everyone, especially those who might enjoy more action-driven tales, but it’s the kind of storytelling I love.
(And in writing and other personal creative projects, I think it’s important to let what you love drive you forwards).
Here are three points I took away from reading this book:
Point #1: Keeping readers interested by embedding small mysteries
The trick is to make your readers want to know what happens next. This is something I have trouble with and therefore I’m particularly interested in seeing how other books handle it.
Each chapter in this book is written from a different character’s perspective. I’ll include the first and last lines (which I think are brilliantly done) in the form: (first line/last line). Following that, I’ll describe some mysteries that the chapter raises.
Prologue: Blue (“Blue Sargent had forgotten how many times she’d been told that she would kill her true love.”/”’You’re Maura’s daughter,’ Neeve said, and before Blue could answer, she added, “this is the year you’ll fall in love.’”) – pg. 1-4
We’re introduced to the idea that Blue will kill her true love if she kisses him
Which immediately raises the question: who is he? And how does she get from being determined not to fall in love to killing someone with a kiss?
We learn about Blue’s psychic family, which I think is super interesting
Blue’s half-aunt Neeve comes to town and really hits us with that: “This is the year you’ll fall in love.” Pay attention, that line says.
Chapter 1: Blue (“It was freezing in the churchyard, even before the dead arrived.”/“’There are only two reasons a non-seer would see a spirit on St. Mark’s Eve, Blue. Either you’re his true love,’ Neeve said, ‘or you killed him.’”) – pg.  5-16
Blue and Neeve watch for the future dead
Blue, the only non-psychic in her family, sees a spirit for the first time
The guy she’s destined to kill or fall in love with (or both)
His name is Gansey, and now we’re wondering who he is
Chapter 2: Gansey (“’It’s me,’ said Gansey.”/”’That seems obvious,’ he answered. ‘We find out who you were talking to.’”) – pg. 17-28
Brilliant cut to Gansey
This guy is very real and because of the previous scene, we want to know who he is
We learn about his quest, which adds another layer of mystery
Gansey also heard Blue, on his recorder, so now he’s wondering about her
We ask ourselves: how will these two meet?
Also, introduces Gansey’s friends Adam and Ronan
Ronan has a tumultuous relationship with his brother Declan
THEY HAVE A NUMBER FOR A PSYCHIC (guess who belongs to a psychic family)
Chapter 3: Blue (“Mornings at 300 Fox Way were fearful, jumbled things.”/”’Blue,’ Maura said finally. ‘I don’t have to tell you not to kiss anyone, right?’”) – pgs. 29-37
Introduces Blue’s house
Introduces Blue’s relationship with her mother Maura
Neeve scries and learns that something is strange about Henrietta
Again, we wonder how Blue and Gansey will meet. And also, is it possible to save Gansey from his fate?
Chapter 4: Adam (“Adam Parrish had been Gansey’s friend for eighteen months, and he knew that certain things came along with that friendship.”/”’Excelsior’, said Gansey, and shut the door behind them.”) – pg. 38-51
Introduces Monmouth Manufacturing
Delves further into Gansey’s quest (will Gansey find what he’s looking for?)
Adam is suspicious that someone is spying on their search
Develops tension between Ronan and Declan
Chapter 5: Whelk (“Barrington Whelk was feeling less than sprightly as he slouched down the hall of Whitman House, the Aglionby admin building.”/”It was possible that Czerny’s death wasn’t for nothing after all.”) – pg. 52-56
Adam was suspicious in the previous chapter and now here’s Whelk, being suspicious
What is this guy’s deal?
Whelk hears Gansey is researching ley lines and suddenly gets very interested
Who is Czerny and how did he die?
Chapter 6: Blue (“Blue wouldn’t really describe herself as a waitress.”/”Neeve had to be wrong. She’d never fall in love with one of them.”) – pg. 57-64
Blue goes to work at Nino’s, the same place Gansey and his crew are going
Blue’s mother calls: Gansey has scheduled a reading
THEY MEET! This is great. They meet and they both dislike each other. They immediately conflict and neither realizes the other is the person they’re looking for.
The dramatic irony is fantastic
Adam is interested in Blue and Blue is a little bit interested in him
How does Blue end up liking Gansey, who she currently hates?
Truly, a mystery
WHAT WILL HAPPEN WHEN THE TWO MEET AGAIN AT THE PSYCHIC READING???
I could do this for the whole book, but you get the picture. There’s always something the reader is left wondering, even if it’s something small, or a future interaction they’re looking forwards to.
A note: this is particularly effective when it’s tied to personal agency. You want to see what your characters will do, and this means more if you have dynamic characters who make choices.
Point #2: Atmosphere and memorable locations
Another big strength of this book is the personality that it imbues its settings with. Take three examples: 300 Fox Way, Monmouth Manufacturing and Cabeswater.
300 Fox Way – the chaotic, full-to-the-brim house where Blue lives with her mom and her aunt and her mom’s two best friends Persephone and Calla and a multitude of other psychic women, all showcased through background details. I love this house and its aesthetic.
Quote: “Mornings at 300 Fox Way were fearful, jumbled things. Elbows in sides and lines for the bathroom and people snapping over tea bags placed into cups that already had tea bags in them. There was school for Blue and work for some of the more productive (or less intuitive) aunts. Toast got burned, cereal went soggy the refrigerator door hung open and expectant for minutes at a time. Keys jingled as car pools were hastily decided.” – pg 29
Monmouth Manufacturing – the abandoned factory that Gansey, Ronan and Noah have made their home. They live on the upper floor and the description of the space really doubles as a character portrait for Gansey. Use settings to reveal and further describe your characters!
Quote: “The high ceiling soared above them, exposed iron beams holding up the roof. Gansey’s invented apartment was a dreamer’s laboratory. The entire second floor, thousands of square feet, spread out before them. Two of the walls were made up of old windows—dozens of tiny, warped panes, except for a few clear ones Gansey had replaced—and the other two walls were covered with maps: the mountains of Virginia, of Wales, of Europe. Marker lines arced across each of them. Across the floor, a telescope peered at the Western sky; at its feet lay piles of arcane electronics meant to measure magnetic activity.
And everywhere, everywhere, there were books. Not the tidy stacks of an intellectual attempting to impress, but the slumping piles of a scholar obsessed. Some of the books weren’t in English. Some of the books were dictionaries for the languages that some of the other books were in. Some of the books were actually Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Editions.” – pg 41
Cabeswater — a magical, sentient forest. I love this forest so much. I love the overall portrayal of magic in this series and this forest is my favourite example of that. The trees speak Latin, time is fluid and sometimes the very air manifests your thoughts, so keep a watch on them.
Quote: “The stream trickled sluggishly out of the woods from between two diamond-barked dogwoods. With Gansey in the lead, they all followed the water into the trees. Immediately, the temperature dropped several degrees. Blue hadn’t realized how much insect noise there was in the field until it was replaced by occasional birdsong under the trees. This was a beautiful, old wood, all massive oak and ash trees finding footing among great slabs of cracked stone. Ferns sprang from rocks and verdant moss grew up the sides of the tree trunks. The air itself was scented with green and growing and water. The light was golden through the leaves. Everything was alive, alive.” – pg 219
What can I take away from this? Using small, specific details to make a setting unique and memorable can add atmosphere to your novel, showcase characters and make a reader fall in love with a particular place.
 Point #3: Evolving arcs
This story contains a lot of interwoven plot threads. This can be hard to balance (I know from personal experience) but I think this novel pulls it off. It’s very, very good at doing many things at once. The important thing to think about is a beginning, middle and end for different story arcs that you introduce. Here’s one example (of many) from this book.
 Example 1: Noah
Oh Noah. Noah is a brilliant example of an arc in this book and also one of my favourite demonstrations of the fact that sometimes you can hide things right in the open.
First mention (pg. 26). Noah goes out for pizza with the crew, but there is no mention of him going to school or otherwise having a life. This theme will continue: while Gansey, Adam, Ronan and Blue have conflict and fleshed-out internal worlds, Noah is a static character. The first time I read this book, I was like Gansey. I didn’t notice how much Noah was missing until it was explicitly called out.
First line of dialogue: “I’ve been dead for seven years,” Noah said. “That’s as warm as they get.” (pg. 47) (IT’S RIGHT THERE, but yet I didn’t pick up on it. Clever, clever.)
Noah’s room is also described as ‘meticulous’. As in, practically unused.
“Noah, we won’t make you eat,” says Gansey. “Need some more alone time?” says Ronan. More little hints.
The character descriptions are honestly so good, worth a study all in themselves.
Noah doesn’t come to the psychic’s reading or the helicopter trip, which the other boys do
Somehow, he has a canny knack for knowing things and sharing secrets.
“Don’t throw it away.” (pg. 165) (to Gansey)
Gansey calls for Noah but he’s not there (pg. 233)
“Blue permitted Noah to pet the crazy tufts of her hair” (pg. 238). Not particularly arc related but SUPER CUTE.
The gang visits Cabeswater again and finds Noah’s old abandoned car, a red Mustang (not that they realize it yet). In the trunk is a dowsing rod, a sign someone else is looking for ley lines. Noah throws up (from the trauma of his murder).
Blue and Gansey visit the old church and find a body. “The face on the driver’s license was Noah’s.” (pg. 274)
THE BIG SCENE IN WHICH NOAH IS REVEALED AS A GHOST (what a brilliant scene)
“Adam,” he demanded, “what is Noah’s last name?”
“Tell me,” Gansey said, “which classes you share with Noah.”
“When does he eat? Have you ever seen him eat?”
“Does he pay rent? When did he move in? Have you ever questioned it?”
These are all questions Gansey asks his friends, but are also questions we must ask ourselves. We have been fooled in the same way as they have.
“I told you,” Noah said. “I told everyone.” (pg. 278)
“The question is: Who killed you?” (pg. 279)
Noah acts like a real ghost (disappears, reappears, knocks objects off desks)
“Maybe moving it off the ley line had stolen his energy.” (pg. 298) (in regards to Noah’s body)
Noah appears, using Blue’s energy. “I want you to know,” Noah said, “I was…more…when I was alive.” (pg. 305)
“You were the sacrifice, weren’t you Noah? Someone killed you for this.” (pg. 307). It turns out Noah, the friend they didn’t realize was dead, was killed in a ritual similar to the one that is attempted at the end of the novel by their Latin teacher, and is the reason Gansey is alive.
Remember: “Someone else on the ley line is dying when they should not, and so you will live when you should not.” (pg. 271).
It’s all very circular and interwoven and very good plotting.
Noah said, “But you already know.” (pg. 309)  (In regards to who killed him) JUMPCUTS to a scene with Whelk
“I’m going to fix Noah. Somehow.” (pg. 335) (says Gansey)
She allowed him to pet her hair with his icy fingers. “Not so spiky as usual,” he said sadly. (pg. 353)
“Don’t throw it away,” Noah whispered. (pg. 371) To Adam, this time.
Noah warns Gansey that Adam is gone (he is now 100% a spooky ghost boy)
THE MURDERED/REMEMBERED SCENE (breaks my heart). They’re all in Cabeswater again for the climax of the novel and Noah, who doesn’t exist in bodily form, traces words into the dust on his old car
Noah’s funeral: “Please say something to them.” / “Mrs. Czerny, he’s sorry for drinking your birthday schnapps.” (pg. 406-407) (ouch, my heart)
They dig up his bones and rebury them on the ley line
“Can we go home? This place is so creepy.” … ”Noah!” Gansey cried gladly. Blue hurled his arms around his neck. He looked alarmed, and then pleased, and then he pet the tufts of her hair. (pg 408)
Broadly, the arc looks like this (look how actions lead to consequences which lead to further actions):
The boys have a friend named Noah, who is sometimes there and sometimes not
LOTS OF FORESHADOWING
They find Noah’s dead body
They confront Noah and find out he’s a ghost
The police move his bones so he starts acting like a real ghost
They figure out he was used in an attempted ritual and also that their Latin teacher killed him
The dig up his bones and rebury them on the ley line
Noah comes back
Given what happens later in this series, it’s very important to me that we remember Noah.
 In conclusion
What this book does well:
Keeping readers interested by embedding small mysteries
Atmosphere and memorable locations
Evolving arcs
These are just a few things I noticed on my read-through of The Raven Boys. Stay tuned for further Word Wanderings posts and feel free to give suggestions for books you’d like me to analyze!
Personal Challenge: Pick a book you’re currently reading or an old favorite and try to figure out what keeps you reading, whether it’s little mysteries, character dilemmas or rising tension.

Shuffle 10 Songs + fav lyrics
Tagged by @avaantares. I'm shuffling my itunes library, which is a bunch of instrumental, showtunes, and other random 80s? So let's see how this goes.
1. Ground Crew - Adam Young (from the album/score Project Excelsior)
Well, we're starting mildly anticlimactic here with a lyric-free track. I really enjoyed all of Adam Young's stuff during the score stuff he was doing.
2. Dust in the Wind - Kansas
It's the same old song
We're just a drop of water, in an endless sea
All we do
Just crumbles to the ground, though we refuse to see
Dust in the wind
All we are is dust in the wind
Told you it jumps around a lot. Anyway, I mostly like this one for the sound.
3. Gibberish - Relient K
if i had one wish
well i don't know just what i'd wish for
but if i had a million zillion wishes
i'd use one to let you know that gibberish is
not a nice way to talk to all your friends
90% of the lyrics to this song are literal gibberish, so be glad I chose English. I'm also not shocked at how soon a Relient K song came up.
4. Strange Magic - Electric Light Orchestra
Got a strange magic
Got a strange magic
Because half the songg is literally just the words "Strange Magic", I feel like I chose pretty well.
5. Whiteout - Christopher Beck (from the Frozen soundtrack)
Yes, I have thw Frozen soundtrack, curtesy of a large phone memory, never deleting anything, and my early high school self. This track has no words anyway.
6. All Good Gifts - Merrell Jackson and Company (Godspell)
All good gifts around us
Are sent from Heaven above
Then thank the Lord, thank the Lord for all his love...
7. Fiesta Con De La Cruz - Michael Giacchino (Coco soundtrack)
Instrumental again.
8. For Good - Kristin Chenoweth and Idina Menzel (Wicked)
And we are led
to those who help us most to grow
if we let them
and we help them in return
9. Parade of the Ewoks - John Williams
No lyrics here, folks
10. Plant Life - Owl City
I'd rather waltz than just walk through the forest
The trees keep the tempo and they sway in time
Quartet of crickets chime in for the chorus
If I were to pluck on your heartstrings would you strum on mine?
Ending how we started, apparently. It's an Adam Young kinda day. Owl City honestly has great lyrics, even if they're a little odd.
After that journey, tagging @quizbowlnerd @a-fragile-sort-of-anarchy @justice-lives and @thebibliosphere to join me. Also if you're reading this, you are cordially invited to try it. Come on, it'll be fun!

IMPERIAL TRIUMPHANT – “Alphaville”
New York's nebulous avant-garde metal outfit IMPERIAL TRIUMPHANT have announced their forthcoming studio album, “Alphaville”, for a July 31st release of this year. Now they’ve revealed the magnificent artwork by Zbigniew M. Bielak and track list.
Tumblr media
Alphaville Track List Rotted Futures Excelsior City Swine Atomic Age Transmission to Mercury Alphaville The Greater Good Bonus tracks Experiment (Voivod) Happy Home (The Residents)         The band comments: "We are pleased to finally unveil the cover of 'Alphaville'. Working with Zbigniew has been a pleasure and he has put a lot of hard work into this magnificent piece. The detail is extraordinary and it pairs very well with the music. Imperial Triumphant has always tried to go beyond just the sound. We strive to create a fuller experience for the listener. This cover takes you deeper into the abyss of our world." Cover artist Zbigniew M. Bielak comments: “The extreme metal scene of today has long reached the apex of its aural inaccessibility. It has mutated so far beyond the rock and roll genome, that the sole artistic choices we're left with, are often between cavernous, almost inperceptible pulse and a sonic-induced epilepsy. Although ecclectism is seemingly thriving, it takes a rare band like Imperial Triumphant to really push the envelope. Much like their home turf, lush with warm glimmer of brass, ripe with neuroses of alternative rock and crushing with weights of skyscraping Phalloi, Imperial Triumphant are bringing the New Crossover. And boasting legendary Trey Spruance of Mr. Bungle and Faith No More fame at the production helm, 'Alphaville' is indeed a transgenre, cinematic venture into gilded bowels of the New York mythos.  Based on multiple intersecting perspectives, the cover illustration was meant to convey the soul of NYC. With all of its innate duality, all grandeur and insignificance dealt lopsidedly in seamless 24 hour cycles, and most notably - it's architecture in mind - I wanted to keep the image perversely neutral rather than dark. Hence, unburdened by Metal, aesthetically it's closer to honoring late master Syd Mead's dystopics than - equally inspiring - hostility of HR Giger's 'Samurai'.”   Also, make sure to check out the in depth behind the scenes that Metal Injection did while the band recorded “Alphaville” at Menegroth Studio in New York with engineer Colin Marston (Behold... The Arctopus, Dysrhythmia, Krallice and Gorguts) and Trey Spruance (Mr. Bungle) and IMPERIAL TRIUMPHANT producing: Zachary Ilya Ezrin (vocals/guitars) about the new studio effort: “Alphaville is the newest luxury product from Imperial Triumphant. We're incredible proud of this lofty work and so glad that we could feature so many talents guests on it. It has been a huge collaborative effort and we're very grateful to Colin Marston and Trey Spruance for helping to shape this beast. Century Media has also been a tremendous asset in helping us with the resources we needed to create such a record. The final product is truly splendorous.”  The band had a number of guest visiting them in the studio: Tomas Haake (Meshuggah) - Taiko drums Phlegeton (Wormed) - Vocals Yoshiko Ohara (ex-Bloody Panda) - Choirs RK Halvorson - Barbershop quartet Sarai Chrzanowski - Choirs Andromeda Anarchia (Folterkammer, Dark Matters) - Choirs J Walter Hawke - Trombone Colin Marston - Guitars

Naps
The tradition of napping dates back thousands of years, with modern-day siestas originating in Spain. Spain’s influence has led to siestas becoming common in Spanish-speaking nations around the world, as well as Greece, Italy, The Philippines, Nigeria, and more. Siestas typically occur in hot climates, allowing people to sleep though the hottest part of the day and avoid the sun’s strong midday rays.
While the siesta has changed over time, it was once thought to be a physical necessity. It’s believed that Spain introduced the siesta centuries ago to provide their farmers with a time to rest during peak temperatures.
Though Spaniards are now famous for their daily two-hour break, the origins of the afternoon nap go back much further, dating back to ancient Islam. The practice was recorded in Islamic Law and was also written about in the Koran. Romans also regularly took daily naps.
Although the siesta is still popular today, it has evolved over time. Siestas have evolved into a time to break up the workday and see family.
Naps can restore alertness, enhance performance, reduce mistakes and accidents, and even help improve memory. SleepFoundation.org also states there are 3 types of napping: planned napping, emergency napping, and habitual napping.

This film won international acclaim, was nominated for numerous awards and even took home 4 Oscars, 2 BAFTAs, a Plame d’Or award, a Golden Globe, a SAG award, and more.
Parasite is so popular it has gone on to even be optioned as an expanded series on HBO. The film also took in 257 million US dollars, a healthy amount over its 11.4-million-dollar budget.
Guitar/Learning Guitar/Guitar Solos
The guitar is a fretted musical instrument that usually has six strings.[1] It is typically played with both hands by strumming or plucking the strings with either a guitar pick or the fingers/fingernails of one hand, while simultaneously fretting (pressing the strings against the frets) with the fingers of the other hand. The sound of the vibrating strings is projected either acoustically, by means of the hollow chamber of the guitar (for an acoustic guitar), or through an electrical amplifier and a speaker.
The guitar is a type of chordophone, traditionally constructed from wood and strung with either gut, nylon or steel strings and distinguished from other chordophones by its construction and tuning. The modern guitar was preceded by the gittern, the vihuela, the four-course Renaissance guitar, and the five-course baroque guitar, all of which contributed to the development of the modern six-string instrument.
The guitar has become popular in multiple iterations: acoustic, electric, bass. The guitar has also been popular through most any genre of music—whether is be pop, punk, classical, or country.
A guitar solo is a melodic passage, instrumental section, or entire piece of music written for a classical guitar, electric guitar or an acoustic guitar. In the 20th and 21st century traditional music and popular music such as blues, swing, jazz, jazz fusion, rock and metal guitar solos often contain virtuoso techniques and varying degrees of improvisation. Guitar solos on classical guitar, which are typically written in musical notation, are also used in classical music forms such as chamber music and concertos.
Guitar solos range from unaccompanied works for a single guitar to compositions with accompaniment from a few other instruments or a large ensemble. The accompaniment musicians for a guitar solo can range from a small ensemble such as a jazz quartet or a rock band, to a large ensemble such as an orchestra or big band. Unaccompanied acoustic guitar music is found in folk and classical music dating as far back as the instrument has existed, and the use of an acoustic guitar as a solo voice within an ensemble dates back at least to the Baroque concerto.
Electric guitar solos are among the most popular type of guitar solo, especially during the height of rock and roll music. “Shredding” and guitar solos go hand in hand, and guitar solos can come about in most any portion of a song. What guitar solo or style of guitar solo is best is a hotly debated topic.
Learning guitar can be done several ways, even without knowing music theory. Some famous guitarist learn the instrument all on their own, these days many video and online tools are available for the amateur guitarist. Books and instructional CDs or DvDs developed over time too. The instrument, like anything, can be difficult to master but, is worth it when you can create music.
Halo Top Ice Cream
According to its website: “Halo Top is light ice cream that actually tastes like ice cream.” The brand started at first with just four flavors but, has expanded as time goes on/ Cookies and cream, candy bar, sea salt caramel, birthday cake, chocolate, and more flavors are available for between 280-380 calories per pint. Delicious and (semi) nutritious. The ice cream comes in pint sizes, decorated with an ice cream scoop that states the calories per pint and a tub the shows off the facets of the flavor. The cap on the pint has a gold edge—hence the name Halo Top. Halo Top also has dairy pints, dairy free pints, keto options, and ice cream pops.
Screen Writing
Screen writing is the writing of a script for a film or TV program (on-screen, hence the name). Screen writing can be adaptive, adapting material that has already been created (like a book, comic, play, etc.) or screen writing can be original—creating entirely new content for the screen. Playwrights were some of the earliest recognized screenwriters, and these days awards and recognition is more readily given out for screenwriters in TV or film. Screenwriters often do double duty on set as well, with more and more screenwriters also operating as actors, directors, producers, or more on set.
Free College
Free college has been offered in a few capacities in the United States. Once you join the military for instance, you can go to college for free (with a few stipulations). Free college has also become a political standpoint that has been a touchstone of recent elections. Debt forgiveness is another facet of free college, for example New Yorkers who attend a state college will have debt forgiven with the Excelsior Scholarship, public servants for 10 years, teachers teaching at a school in need for four years, and more small subcategories of college grads—qualify for debt forgiveness. Free college is becoming a more widespread issue, in 2014, Germany's 16 states abolished tuition fees for undergraduate students at all public German universities. Five countries that offer a free or low-cost college education are Norway, Finland, Sweden, Germany, and France. For many U.S. students contemplating moving abroad for college, a key consideration is finding a program of study that is taught in English.
Stranger Things
Stranger Things is an American science fiction, drama-horror web television series created by the Duffer Brothers and released on Netflix. The twins also serve as executive producers with Shawn Levy and Dan Cohen. The series premiered on Netflix on July 15, 2016. Set in the 1980s in the fictional town of Hawkins, Indiana, the first season focuses on the investigation into the disappearance of a young boy amid supernatural events occurring around the town, including the appearance of a girl with psychokinetic abilities. The series stars an ensemble cast including Winona Ryder, David Harbour, Finn Wolfhard, Millie Bobby Brown, Gaten Matarazzo, Caleb McLaughlin, Noah Schnapp, Natalia Dyer, Charlie Heaton, Joe Keery and Cara Buono.
The Duffer Brothers developed the series as a mix of investigative drama alongside supernatural elements portrayed with horror, science fiction and childlike sensibilities. Setting the series in the 1980s, the Duffer Brothers infused references to the pop culture of that decade while several themes and directorial aspects were inspired primarily by the works of Steven Spielberg, John Carpenter, and Stephen King, as well as anime and video games. They also took inspiration from strange experiments that took place during the Cold War and real world conspiracy theories involving secret government experiments.
Stranger Things has attracted record viewership on Netflix and has a broad, active, and international fan base. The series has received critical acclaim for its characterization, pacing, atmosphere, acting, soundtrack, directing, writing, and homages to 1980s films. The series has received multiple awards and nominations including 31 Primetime Emmy Award nominations, four Golden Globe Award nominations, a British Academy Television Award nomination, two Directors Guild of America Award nominations, three Writers Guild of America Award nominations, and three Grammy Award nominations. It has won a Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series, two American Film Institute awards, a Critics' Choice Television Award, and three People's Choice Awards, among others. In September 2019, the series was renewed for a fourth season. The Duffer Brothers have said that Stranger Things is likely to end after its fourth or fifth season.
Callie Anne Diestelkamp (my cat)
Adopted June of 2012 at 2 months old, Callie is the youngest member of the Diestelkamp family. She is a rather skinny and loud but loveable cat. She is believed to be an American shorthair although her white coat with black splotches gives away no information on breed. Callie is disinterested by toys, loves food, enjoys forts and blankets and DISPISES most other cats. She is adorable and loved by all (especially me). She is almost 8, and is moving and grooving like a kitten.
Printmaking
Printmaking is an artistic process based on the principle of transferring images from a matrix onto another surface, most often paper or fabric. Traditional printmaking techniques include woodcut, etching, engraving, and lithography, while modern artists have expanded available techniques to include screenprinting.
A matrix is essentially a template, and can be made of wood, metal, or glass. The design is created on the matrix by working its flat surface with either tools or chemicals. The matrix is then inked in order to transfer it onto the desired surface. To print from a matrix requires the application of controlled pressure, most often achieved by using a printing press, which creates an even impression of the design when it is printed onto the paper or fabric. (More modern printmaking techniques, such as screenprinting, do not require a press.) The resulting print is often the mirror image of the original design on the matrix. One of the great benefits of printmaking (save for monotype) is that multiple impressions of the same design can be printed from a single matrix.

Remembering Stan Lee: A man as extraordinary as the characters he created
A superhero in his own right to Marvel fans around the world, Stan had the power to inspire, to entertain and to connect
Tumblr media
Stan Lee, who brought a modern sensibility to comic books and provided lucrative fodder for Hollywood as co-creator of such sympathetically imperfect superheroes as Spider-Man, the Incredible Hulk, X-Men, and Iron Man, has died. He was 95.
From his start as a writer for Timely Comics in 1941, Lee rose to editor and publisher of Marvel Comics. He made his mark starting in the early 1960s by conjuring superheroes with troubled lives and temperamental personalities, a leap from the comic-book characters of the past.
“For once I wanted to write stories that wouldn’t insult the intelligence of an older reader, stories with interesting characterization, more realistic dialogue and plots that hadn’t been recycled a thousand times before,” Lee wrote in his 2002 memoir, Excelsior: The Amazing Life of Stan Lee. He was describing the 1961 creation, with artist Jack Kirby, of the Fantastic Four, the human quartet who gain special powers after being exposed to cosmic radiation.
So pleased was Lee with the quick success of the Fantastic Four that he added to the cover of follow-up issues the slogan, “The World’s Greatest Comic Magazine.”
He followed up by helping create the Incredible Hulk —he said he asked Kirby, “Can you draw a good-looking monster, or at least a sympathetic-looking monster?” —then the Mighty Thor, Iron Man and X-Men in the early 1960s.
A Marvel till the End → Stan Lee Forever

Calabar quartet taking maths to over 100 from six schools
New Post has been published on http://goodnewsjamaica.com/education/calabar-quartet-taking-maths-100-six-schools/
Calabar quartet taking maths to over 100 from six schools
Shamoy Wallace (standing) explains a concept behind a mathematical question to Tereek Gayle.
For many young men, Saturday mornings are sacred and reserved for recreational activities. It’s the time they use to catch up on video games, play football basketball or unwind from the stresses of the week. But for four young men, old boys of Calabar High School, it’s the time they have used, over the past four years, to tutor present students in mathematics and impart words of wisdom.
On a visit to the school by the Jamaica Observer yesterday, close to 100 young males and females sat attentively seeking to understand the concepts, formulas and application of the mathematical problems being taught to them.
Others had to be encouraged to boldly work out the problems and believe that mathematics was not a subject insurmountable.
Shamoy Wallace, 25, executor of the classes, shared that while at The University of the West Indies, Dr Jermaine McCalpin, a lecturer at the institution and Calabar old boy, gave him a call saying that he envisioned the programme and thought he was the ideal person to start it.
“At first I said, ‘Me, teach maths?’ and I gave it some thought and said it would be good and got some guys from my year, like Kemar Gordon and Simon Johnson, to come on board,” Wallace said.
But for Wallace, who holds a first degree in economics (special), his first class was a test to see his level of commitment, as only three students showed.
He shared that he remained committed after seeing how he he was able to get one of the three boys in the class to break out of his shyness and “up his math game”.
Today, the class caters to over 100 students from six high schools — Calabar, Jamaica College, Camperdown, Merl Grove, Excelsior, and Jose Marti Technical — and is free of cost.
Students are also fed at the end of classes.
Apart from Wallace, Gordon and Johnson, old boy Christopher Lai also volunteers his Saturdays.
“We give notes, introduce card games, incentives for scoring the highest, and give them reasons to stay motivated and pumped. Placing them on board and motivating them gives more courage too,” Wallace said.
The classes are also about mentorship for those in attendance.
“When a student can open up, and level with you, they feel more comfortable. When you can say; hey I went through this and this is how I solved it; or say to them, ‘your problems now aren’t any different from ours’. When you can reason and say ‘the girls you’re thinking about will always be there, but the opportunity for a good education may not and you talk their language it makes a difference for them,” Wallace said.
Johnson, one of the volunteers and old boy who also served as Calabar’s head boy in academic year 2010/2011 shared, similar sentiments and stated while there was no shortage for the support of sports, academically work was needed.
“We are 40-odd on CSEC (Caribbean Secondary Examination Certificate) ranking list, and that is nothing to boast about for a traditional high school. The fact is mathematics is problematic, and we realise that if we catch them from they are young they will develop a culture of liking the subject and tackling it head-on. Usually they say don’t like it, and that’s because they never learnt it properly. So it’s catching them from seventh grade and helping them to develop a better understanding of the basics,” he explained.
Further, he said that some of the students actually like maths, but want to do better.
Orlando Broomfield, grade seven student at Calabar expressed that ratio was his greatest challenge, and since being in the classes he has improved. He said at the end of his high school tenure he hopes to achieve 10 grade ones in CSEC.
Jose Marti Technical student Alexsia McFarlane said that since being part of the class for three weeks she has got a wider understanding in maths even though she loves the subject.
“I learned different methods to solving problems as my maths teacher only teaches one way. They teach how we understand, and I hope to move my maths grade from 90 to 100,” she said.
Calabar student Malique Sewell admitted that he is not bad at math, but he had ‘issues’ with algebra, which was causing him to fail, so he decided to join the class.
“It’s important, as it is everything. My grandfather said if you fail maths you fail life, and in third form I failed hard, as I didn’t understand. I came to the class, met Simon, and I could relate more. They talk my language and make it look easier, and I am doing better now,” Sewell said.
Davian Gayle, a fourth form student at Calabar, said that since being in the class his maths average has moved from 54 to 87 per cent and each class leads to a better experience.
“It’s an easier interaction. The guys are closer to our age and have a better understanding of how we would view life and situations,” he said.
As for Tereek Gayle, another fourth form student, he witnessed a steady decline in his grades last academic year and decided to come to the classes to improve
“Maths is not really a challenge for me but under pressure I lose focus and tend to forget the formula I saw my grades fall to 60, then 50. My next test will be a month from now, and I expect to see high grades and a big improvement,” he said.
Moreover, Wallace said that though the initiative started with Calabar, it’s not just for them and hopes the move will start a fire elsewhere.
“I don’t want anyone to say ‘oh, it’s just for Calabar,’ because it isn’t. Six different high schools come and students from anywhere are welcomed. We are committed to improving our maths grades right across the island,” he said.
