Silicone Mould Making Process

What I did:

1. I took my object and I build a wall around it, (so that the Silicone doesn’t run away). 2. I then made the silicone mixture: 100g of silicone + 10g catalyst = perfection. The catalyst that is added is always 10% of the silicone. You have about a 1 to 2g room for error. 3. Pour the silicone mixture over the objects (maybe glue the objects down if you are worried about them floating) 4. Make sure the mixture spreads everywhere and all air bubbles get released. 5. Let the silicone mixture set for up to 16 hours. 6. Remove the clay walls. 7. Remove the object from the silicone mould. 8. Mix up some Material one which is 2 parts material one powder and 1 part material one liquid. If need be, add a teaspoon of thickener. 9. The Material one mix will set in 15-20 minutes so pour or scoop or brush the material one into the mould and let set. 10. Carefully, and don’t let Rowan near your mould because he will break it, remove your mould from the silicone mould and there you have it!  

If you need a jacket: A jacket is there to hold the silicone mould together so that it doesn’t flop around. It helps the silicone keep its shape. 1. Once your silicone mould is set, don’t remove the object from within. 2. Start with a layer of material one over the silicone. Use a paintbrush to spread it all over evenly. Let dry. 3. Cut out some fibre glass strips, enough to cover the entire mould. 4. Add a thin layer of material one so that the fibre glass strips can stick to it. Add all the fibre glass strips as to cover the surface then finish adding the second layer of material one. 5. Make more material one, enough for a third layer of the jacket. Add thickener to this mix. Let set. 6. In the case of multiple jackets make sure to do one jacket at a time and add Vaseline were the jackets meet as to avoid the material one sticking. Drill some 4mm holes through the jacket, where the edges of the different jackets meet. Get your hands on some cheesehead machine screws, size M4, length 40mm, and some wing nuts and washes. Use the washes as to not damage the jacket. Use the screws and wing nuts to hold the jacket together nice and sturdily while you’re casting. 7. Remove the silicone mould from the jacket and the object from the silicone mould. 8. Clean out the silicone mould and adjust where need be, the jacket or mould, so that the silicone mould moves easily out of jacket. 9. Apply material one as noted above, unless… 10. … you are doing a hollow mould. In that case paint on the material one + thickener mixture onto the silicone mould. Let set and remove. Carefully.
