Sims 3 Skills Tier List

Ranked for income potential, object/skill output, gameplay potential, and storytelling opportunities.

Details below the cutoff

D-Tier

These skills offer very poor gameplay and/or extremely limited storytelling potential.

Bass: This placement is super unfair, I know. But there's five nearly identical instrument skills, one of which just does more than the others. Piano and drums both give me good character building potential from childhood; bass tells me more about an adult character, but not in a way that often gives me any gameplay. I only use bass for One Sim Band since the actual band system is totally broken, so it ends up here.

Scuba Diving: Locked to Isla Paradiso (or custom worlds), extremely limited in its gameplay, and automatically maxed if you become a mermaid (in the best town to be a mermaid), Scuba Diving has done absolutely nothing for my gameplay experience in 15 years.

Social Networking: I actually wanted to place this higher just for the Relationship Transmogrifier at max levels but that's such a niche storytelling tool whose job just gets done by MasterController. Blogs are meant to be super active but aren't engaging, the Sim Finder is worthless, and the skill is just a dull slog while levelling.

C-Tier

Skills that aren't super valuable above others except for niche gameplay or story purposes. Have meaningful drawbacks or limitations. Generally fun but you have to go a bit out of your way to make the most of them.

Instrument Skills: Piano, Drums, and Laser Rhythm-a-con get lumped together here. Money making potential is high but is inconsistent if you can't find a super populated lot. Depends on farming your friends for money at parties which is funny for gameplay but limited in stories. Again, bands don't work.

Riding: Income is severely limited by the Equestrian Center's competition hours. You don't even need the skill to train your horses - just to win competitions. I would rank this lower since the skill doesn't do anything outside of a rabbit hole, except you do unlock the ability to adopt wild horses at 9.

Mixology: I love Late Night, but Mixology is not it. No real trait interactions, no real income potential, and no unique niche. Even the skill gain drink, its best output, competes with Science and Alchemy. REALLY good for character flavour though.

Sculpting: This skill is genuinely cool when it gives you an object you can use, but there's so many sculptures in the pool that you can't reliably use it in place of Buy Mode. You have to work extremely hard to make an ice palace or a fully-wood home (and for wood, you just use CAS). Income is disrupted by Fluorite, which sells well but sometimes I just want an actual sculpture. Very usable but Painting is the better art skill.

Street Art: 10/10 for flavour, and gets points for being the best source of Rebel influence. Painting the town is really engaging. But the drawbacks are extreme - you make money as though you were an instrument skill without parties, and the fines are super harsh. Barely misses B tier for those drawbacks.

B-Tier

Useful skills that are fun to play but that don't drastically change your experience.

Inventing: The consignment gameplay associated with this skill can be fun at times. The big inventions are hit and miss. The Floor Hygeinator takes time before it stops spamming Nauseous moodlets but it's great at high level. SimBots are awesome and their opportunity is meaningfully hard, which is a good thing. The Harvester is awful. Detonation is the funniest part of the game. Scrap limiting progression is good for gameplay but bad for income. Overall a balanced skill that's worth building a character around once in a while.

Athletic: Good flavour, limited gameplay. Life extension from jogging challenge is simple to achieve, but the time spent extending your life can be spent living it instead. Ties into a lot of careers and supports Martial Arts income if you achieve its anti-fatigue challenges. I honestly use Athletics to get sims out of my way when I need a bit less chaos.

Nectar Making: It's fun to experiment with different flavour combinations and the income can be high over time, but its complete reliance on Gardening means it's not doing much alone.

Handiness: Every upgrade is useful to have but none are essential - except maybe Auto Water for gardeners. Super useful skill to have early in a legacy but you aren't going to need it forever.

Guitar: The best of the instrument skills solely because it's the one that ties into the Music career. Has more LTW options like Golden Tongue, Golden Fingers. It's base game so there's just more support for Guitar overall.

Painting: The classic basement goblin skill. Custom paintings are my favourite decor element, the income is respectable, and the value to certain careers boosts this skill's ranking. I do wish still lives and portraits reached TS2 quality though.

Martial Arts: I personally find a lot of value from having my sims meditate in peaceful places for my own sake out-of-game. Zeneport has broken utility in World Adventures content. The tournament is fun to play. The income is secretly excellent once you unlock gemstone generation from Space Rock boards. You can make some really interesting characters with this skill and it's essential for faster gem collecting.

Cooking: Practically every Sim is hitting level 3 on this. Not a lot of incentives to take this skill all the way, but the one incentive (Ambrosia) is one of the strongest items in the game.

Logic: Creates gameplay through a lot of different objects. Chess, astronomy, and chemistry are all decent pastimes, though the Young Again and Ninja Vanish potions are realistically the only ones with real utility. Tutoring should be the best part of the skill but in my TEN YEAR file with an immortal who maxed everything I still don't find much use. This skill ties into a lot of careers so it's nice that there's many ways to level it.

A-Tier

Very good skills with either excellent money making potential, strong object output, or compelling gameplay.

Advanced Technology: I'd have never expected this one to place so highly but the Dream Pod is quietly nuts. This skill grants the easiest source of bonus skill gain in the game while also giving some chaos potential in temporary trait adjustment. Small downsides aesthetically (would use a real bed 9/10 times) but at least you don't need Oasis Landing to level.

Writing: One of the best pure income skills in the game. Optimized Masterpiece genre books (including genre specialization) are absolutely absurd. You have to build your character around writing and usually you should support them with a painter or inventor but it's completely worth it.

Photography: Adds an incredible amount of depth to everything in the game. The photo collections are arguably the hardest and most engaging collections in the game, rivaling relics. You can make an entire playthrough out of this skill alone, plus it adds so much to the decor of your home. Very active skill which mixes up gameplay excellently.

Fishing: A strong moneymaker on its own with a compelling collection component. Supports Gardening and Cooking. Fun to engage with when fishing for specific fish. You can easily build a character around this skill.

Charisma: Grants an overwhelming boost to social interactions. Eventually you can become friends with someone just by clicking on them if they're attracted to you. Super important skill if a wide social circle is needed for gameplay or narrative.

S-Tier

Broken skills that warp the game and that should be used by every legacy household in some way.

Gardening: Support skill to all other S-tier skills while also a disgusting money maker on its own. Perfect quality Red Berry Beans are entirely too lucrative and easily accessible. Grants access to death flowers (major part of immortality). Challenges are strong and complete themselves while the omni plant lets you duplicate items that should not be duplicated. I have earned a quarter of a million simoleons in one harvest in large-scale operations.

Bot Building: Allows you to gain a temporary or permanent money maker with no needs, making an ethical and stronger basement goblin (bad if you don't want ethical). Can instantly max certain skills, which for some horrible reason includes Gardening. RoBotany + Solar Powered + Efficient is not fair for income (doesn't need fertilizer!!!), and that's not even your only possible build. ALSO lets you introduce new characters freely for narrative. Gives isolated Sims free social need. The only possible downside is that your bot builder is a support Sim who will need something new to do after building, but this lets you focus on narrative entirely without spending a main character on income.

Science: Takes time to scale since its utility is only at high ranks. As soon as cloning is unlocked though, you will never need to find multiple copies of any rare item. You can gain unlimited death flowers, life fruits, pink diamonds, palladium, etc. Once you get the group science project at 10, you can cheat all motives and boost skill gain trivially. This skill feels like it breaks the game when exploited fully.

Alchemy: This skill would be #1 for the Invigorating Elixir alone. For just one Wolfsbane, you gain tons of energy. Throw in one piece of honeycomb and your energy is maxed and cannot decay for 24h. That is absurdly cheap for how much better it is over the Meditative Trance Sleep LTR. But that's not even the only thing the skill does. You can easily create multiple elixirs per batch with practice (reducing the cost more). You can interact with the consignment system to earn money. You can get Wish Enhancing serums, Procreation Elixirs, and the Fountain of Youth Elixir to reset to YA 0 days whenever you want, without spending lifetime happiness or money. The elixirs having a material cost is a good thing because this power should be locked behind gameplay, but the #2 skill in science helps us to spam rare elixirs anyway. Absolutely insane skill that every household should have.

Because Guardians have special privileges that allow them to go into unexplored and/or forbidden territories. She therefore wants to get her qualifications so that she can go search her mother, who disappeared after saving a village from a manticore corrupted by the Rot. As the series progresses, she'd question the reasons for her commitment and her mother's legacy, until she discovers a sincere vocation to protect others.

In my rewrite, the Way of the Runes (Old Magic) is starting to become almost obsolete compared to the rise of the Way of the Arcanes (New Magic). Sage's parents, who are quite conservative, consider terraspheres unnatural and have raised their daughter in ignorance and contempt for the Way of the Arcanes (think how Mormon and Jehovah Witnesses kids are raised). Even in the face of her insistence on going to the capital with Rosemary. But by learning more about this "unholy" practice, Sage would realize the cult-like lie she was raised in and would work to expand her horizons by learning other forms of magic.

In my rewrite, Parsley would remain the eldest of a large and fairly poor family (but only 5 kids, let's not exagerate). She would therefore be used to bending over backwards to help others, to the point of sometimes neglecting her own health. While she just wanted to join the Academy to build a reputation that would bring customers to the family forge, she'd discover herself an interest in mechanics and automatons. And one thing leading to another, she'd end up realizing that she has the right to be selfish sometimes.

In my rewrite, Thyme would be one of the many elven refugees after the Rot's sudden appearance in the Enchanted Woods. Her father is among the missing people, and she becomes more anxious every day she doesn't hear from him. But she hides all this behind the exterior of a no-nonsense untouchable and independant woman. Until the rest of the group helps her accept her vulnerability.

WENDLA:

In the moment of intellectual engagement, MELCHIOR has drawn so close to WENDLA that she grows self-conscious and pulls back.

WENDLA: 

What time is it?

MELCHIOR: 

Must be close to four.

WENDLA: 

Oh? I thought it was later. I paused and lied so long in the moss by the stream, and just let myself dream ... I thought it must be ... later.

MELCHIOR: 

Then, can't you sit for a moment? When you lean

back against this oak, and stare up at the clouds, you start to think the coolest things …

WENDLA: 

I have to be back before five.

MELCHIOR: 

But, when you lie here, such a strange, swell peace settles over you…

WENDLA: 

Well, for a moment, maybe. 

WENDLA and MELCHIOR settle beneath the oak. A classic arpeggio begins.

Just too unreal, all this.

Watching the words fall from my lips...

MELCHIOR:

Baiting some girl with hypotheses,

WENDLA AND MELCHIOR:

Haven't you heard the word of your body?

MELCHIOR and WENDLA begin to play the slap game.

MELCHIOR:

Don't feel a thing-you wish.

WENDLA:

Grasping at pearls with my fingertips …

MELCHIOR:

Holding her hand like some little tease.

WENDLA AND MELCHIOR:

They stop and make eye contact.

MELCHIOR (Touches her): 

We'll go together. I'll have you on the bridge in ten minutes. 

WENDLA hesitates, then allows him to take her hand. They walk off together.

Young Heros-Clint

Clint

They were in California this time, fighting in Sanbernardino County. Clint didn’t know the area, hadn’t had time to memorize streets and routes. The consequence for this was him getting lost. That’s not to say he just wandered off all willy nilly, no, he just caught a joy ride on an enemy drone.

The thing was fast and streamline, armed with lightweight weapons. He’d gotten twirled around, and stunned for his efforts before he fell into a tree.

“Stupid super villains. “ he grumbled looking around, trying to find something familiar...there was nothing. Of course! This was just his luck! Why was he always the one away from the battle field. The buzz of the drone was near by, so he followed, hoping it would be heading back to its master.

The scraping of shoes on gravel echoed around him, he ran faster. Puffed breathing and subtle zapping of a taser, he pushed further. A crash as he rounded the corner, eyes sharp, arrow notched, ready for battle. Standing I. The middle of the street was a girl, ragged clothes, dirty and worn. Her hair cut short, eyes jaded, skin dining a caramel tan.

She shot him a look, startled at his appearance. She shifted her stance, ready to run, in her hand was a slab of wood, at her feet was the drone, metal bent, wire exposed.

“Wait.” Clint warned, relaxing his grip on his bow. “Do you know this area, can you take me to the fight?”

The girl, she couldn’t be any older than ten, narrowed her eyes, sizing him up before she offered a jerky nod. She moved towards him, quickly snatching up his arm and dragging him through the streets.

“Hey, Hey! Let go, I can follow just fine jeez!” He shouted, trying to wrestle himself out of the grip. The girl had a surprising amount of strength. A swift twist, a sharp jerk, and suddenly he was against an ally wall being glowered at by this tiny Latina girl who started waving her hands around dramatically,...or so he thought.

The girl obviously saw the confusion in his eyes, as she stopped, took in a deep breath, and released the tension in her body, hands coming up to sign.

“I will help you, but we must follow the street rules. We are trespassing. Follow me, quickly.” He read

“Well why didn’t you say so earlier! Lead on!” He offered his arm with a teasing smile. The girl’s lip quirked slighting, and then they were off.

They made quick work of getting to the thicket of the action, and when they arrived Clint turned to the girl and signed.

“Thank you for your help.”

A bright smile lit up her face as she turned to to run from danger. Clint would remember the girl for years to come.

Jen was four when she ran away, at the time she didn’t know much about the world, only that it consisted of an abusive asshole and a negligent narcissist bitch. Neither wanted a child, and death would be imminent if she stayed. So she ran.

It became prominent to her that the world was a beautiful place filled with ugly people. Of course, she had also met a few exceptions to that (an old deaf lady that taught her sign language after learning she was mute, an teenage boy who taught her how to fight dirty and win, a gay man that taught her how to cook with only what you had on you, a trans woman who taught her how to heal, ext.).

Jen learned how to survive the streets, she could free run and parkour with no fear, she learned that death was inevitable so she had to live life to its fullest. No, she never went to school, but she could earn money just fine, she thrives in the arts department, she sold trinket and commissioned art online, she was poor but she found that despite the hard ships, she loved living.

So when she came face to camera with a current villain’s drone, she faced the challenge head on, ready to run if she found she couldn’t over come the piece of machinery, and to fight with all she had because there were people who cared for her and that she cared for. She had fans that wanted more of her work, she wanted to inspire others like others had inspired her. She had a reason to live and that made her dangerous.

In a flash, a slab of wood was in her hands, gravel shifting loud under her feet,, she was ready. A taser shot out, prepared to zap her but she was having none of it. Her skills and lethal body aiding her in moving quickly. A heaving breather, the sound of metal crumbling under the weight of her swing, victory rushed through her veins.

A skid on boots and asphalt, she whipping her head towards the invader, ready for another enemy, only to find a known hero, Hawkeye. She really needed to get out of there, she was no match for what ever he had to fight against.

“Wait! Do you you know that area? Can you take me to the fight?”

Was he being serious? Really? Had he gotten lost? The thought was both worrying and incredibly humorous to her, she didn’t show that though, no need for him to think she was mocking him. She nodded and strode over to him, taking a firm hold of his arm as she dragged him along. They had to stop when he tried to struggle though. They were in dangerous territory, they had to get out of there before the gang caught word.

She whipped around to face him, hands flying about in almost incoherent aborted words, a result of her frustration and fear. She stopped to calm herself, signing correctly this time.

“I will help you, but we must follow the street rules. We are trespassing. Follow me, quickly.”

She lead him through streets, alleyways, back streets, at one point she even lead him to a roof top and down a tree. When they reached his destination, he signed his farewell, she couldn’t help the genuine smile that pulled at her lips.

Yeah, she wanted to be like him, someone that would inspire others to do their best even at their lowest points.

Prompt: you’re stuck in New York. In the rain. With no where to go because you had little money and your plane left without you but Tom is a gentlemen and wouldn’t let a poor girl suffer.

Torrential down pour. You observed the pounding rain as it thudded angrily against the window pain of the taxi cab. it had started minutes ago and the whole city looked as if it’d been hit with a hurricane of rain. The roads swam in water and the lights over head seemed to blur. It was dark when you left your hotel and the sky seemed to only grow darker as you traveled into the city. You were headed to JFK for your flight to Milan, where you planned to spend the ext three months for a study. 

“I can’t see anything!” The cab driver exclaimed harshly, hitting his hands angrily on the steering wheel. You sat quietly in the backseat, watching with discomfort. The rain didn’t bother you. It was the hostility that radiated of the driver. 

Cars honked all around you as the street began to back-up. It was madness, you realized. You loved the city but the traffic in the streets made you feel claustrophobic. 

“Let’s move!” The driver shouted again. His voice becoming more frantic and agitated. You swallowed dryly and stared back out the window. Cars lined the lane beside you and you could only imagine what it looked like behind you.

Your eyes followed the raindrops as they slid in a race down the glass. Some connecting with others in a swirly downfall, others finding their own path. It was when the driver let out a string of curse words that you figured it’d be better if you found a different cab. Your heart thumped steadily as you faced the cab driver. His hat was sitting awkwardly now and his hands ran through his hair in frustration. 

“Uhm, sir.” You reached forward to lean on the glass, separating driver from passenger. “How much do I owe you?”

“What?” He asked suddenly, turning sideways to stare back at you in dismay. “I will take you to the airport.” He clarified, his eyes squinting at you in challenge. Your fingers tapped along the glass.

“I’m in a hurry.” It was your only argument for the case. The driver stared a moment longer before giving you a loud sigh in response. Flicking the dash where the time ticked. Your eyes followed and your heart stopped.

“That can’t be right.” You said slowly, leaning your forehead against the dirty glass and stared bewildered at the time. 

“Sorry, lady.” The driver shrugged his broad shoulders. Your eyes squinted at the time. Wondering if it was all just playing some nasty, cruel trick on you. But it wasn’t. You’d missed your flight.

The driver tapped the dash once again, and you noticed the amount that continued to raise as every second passed.

“Thirty-six, twenty.”

You reached for your wallet and counted out the dollars. It made your wallet seem emptier after you handed him a forty. He had no change. You grabbed the small suit case you had and your hand bag, unlocked the back door and shuffled out. The rain hit you instantly. Dampening your hair in seconds, and it took a minute to soak into your clothes. You raced for the sidewalk as cars honked at you in protest as you cut in between them.

“It’s not like you’re going anywhere!” You yelled at one driver who stuck out a finger at you. The water that streamed the road splashed into your shoes as you made one last dash and made the sidewalk. 

The rain pounded heavily around you. Your bags, your clothes, and your hair were soaked through. People passed by you quickly, umbrellas covering their faces. You would need somewhere to take cover. You slung your hand bag over your shoulder and gripped the small suitcase, bracing yourself for whatever was to come.

You followed the blurry street lights. People continued to brush by as if they didn’t see you. There was an all-night Cafe on the last corner you took and its open signed flashed brightly at you. It surprised you how much the city was still awake for how ugly the weather was. You figured it really was true when people say it’s the City That Never Sleeps.

The Cafe was quiet and only two other people filled seats. Warmth hit you instantly, even though your whole body was soaked to the bone. The barista looked up as the bell above the door chimed and his soft expression turned to concern as he stared at your drenched self. You gave a weak smile before turning to an open booth by the window, the rain pooling hastily on the sidewalk.

You placed your wet bags on the ground, not wanting to soak the seats in the booth anymore than you already were. One of the customers got up from his seat at the far corner, waved a farewell to the barista and stepped into the pouring rain, his umbrella pulled out and covering his top half. You stared after him, wishing you’d thunk of purchasing an umbrella for something like this. Or saving a small wad of cash for a bad case scenario but you hadn’t because you never think ahead. The barista’s eyes scanned you briefly before he got back to work doing whatever it was he was doing behind the large counter tops, and your eyes stared ahead of you, at the backside of the last customers head. 

He sat in the booth beside yours. His head buried in a book you didn’t catch the title of. And your hands started to shake from the wet cold and all you wanted to do was sleep. You wished desperately that you hadn’t missed your plane and that you were on your way to a warmer place, where your hotel was already booked and there was a large, comfy bed waiting for you on the other end. 

“Coffee?” You were snapped from your daydream by the barista. His body stood beside your booth, a hot pot of black, strong coffee in his hands. You stared up at his features. Admiring his chocolate brown hair and large curious eyes. His expression was that of concern and your gut wrenched at the thought of how much money you didn’t have.

“I don’t have any money.” You spoke quietly, in almost a whisper. You leaned forward to the barista, afraid the other customer would here that you were broke. The barista only smiled, placing a cup, that he pulled out of nowhere, onto the table top. 

“It’s on the house.” He filled the mug, gave you a warm smile, and returned to his counter. Your eyes were wide and they felt hot. You didn’t want to cry. Not in public. Not in a Cafe. The mug was warm against your pruning fingers and it made the rest of your body ache to relieve yourself of the wet clothes that clung to you. 

Bringing the steaming liquid to your lips, the coffee slipped down your throat in the most soothing way you could think was imaginable. Never in your life had you felt so obliterated. You were broke. You were soaking wet. Had no where to sleep for the night. And you had no clue what part of New York you stumbled onto. And the only thing that made you feel somewhat okay, was the black coffee that warmed your body. It would soon be over though. The coffee mug would empty and the barista would lose pity for you and ask you to leave and you would have nowhere to go. 

The tears fell. They were slow and quiet. Your body shook but you made no sound. Your reflection probably resembled that of a window pane as the rain continued to fall outside. You were miserable. 

“Headed out, Tom?” The barista called across the Cafe. Your eyes widened as they stared up at the last customer who sat in front of you. his body rose from the booth, his height somehow never ending. His torso was covered in a soft, black overcoat. It’s material, to you, looked extremely welcoming. His hair was an even better sight as you took in the dirty blonde, silky appearance of the whole thing. 

“Ah, best get going Fredrick. The weather will only pursue.” The sound of his voice made your heart stop ticking. Your body was frozen. Your eyes wide and wet from tears, stared at him. His body turned so graciously. His one hand grasping his book in one single fist. His such large hands. His other reached for his coat. And his eyes, the foresty green eyes, landed on you. 

You hiccuped.

“Are you alright, love?” His head cocked sideways as he took in your appearance. Your wet hair, the tears, your shaking body. His eyes felt like they could take every secret from you. His voice could lure you into the deepest of dreams. 

It took you a moment to realize he’d moved closer to you. His hip rested against the seat across from you at the booth. His coat slung over his shoulder. You continued to gawk at him. 

“Excuse me?” He asked. You snapped out of your thoughts at the worry in his tone. His eyes orbs of green and concern. 

“I-I’m-” Words couldn’t form as his cologne hit you, his body moved once more, sending yet another wave of his aroma towards you. He slid into the booth across from you, his coat falling into his lap. His hands landing on top the table, along with his book. The Great Gatsby.

“Is there someone I can call?” His concern was almost overwhelming. His aroma was foresty and rich. Like he’d gone for a walk in the woods and then stopped by a Coffee Factory. He smelt to you like heaven. 

“No. I m-mean yes.” You stuttered. “Well, actually, no.” The fog that covered your thoughts was thickening and his presence made you light-headed but wanting more.

He stared at you in the utmost concern before nodding. “Right,” he drawled. “Is there anything I can do to help?” 

“Ha! No.” You cried out. The bitter tone that it came out in was not intended and your hands wrapped themselves together. “Sorry. I’m just, well, I’m flabbergasted.” 

“That’s okay. And what are you flabbergasted about this evening, Miss..?” He asked, leaning forward on the table. Bringing his features closer for you to speculate. 

“(F/N).” You smiled bitter-sweetly. “And frankly, this whole evening. This whole afternoon that has led to this evening. In which I’m stuck.” Your voice was growing more hoarse and you were afraid you were going to begin to cry again. 

“Miss (F/N),” he started making your ears ring at the sound of your name on his tongue. “That’s quite unfortunate in your case and please, I’m happy to help with anything.” The fact that even though you were coming off bitchy, he was still siting across from you, his expression affectionate, it made you want to vomit. You felt like shit.

“No. There really is nothing you can do.” You choked out, the tears were pooling in your eyes. “What was your name? Tom?” You tried to distract yourself. He smiled in return, making your stomach swirl like a tornado.

“Tom, yes.” His voice so alluring to you. So hypnotic. 

The both of you fell into an odd silence. Neither of you knowing what to say to the other. You just wanted to go home. You weren’t sure what Tom was planning for the evening but you knew for fact it wasn’t dealing with a sobbing, rain drenched girl. His green eyes continued to stare at you as if they were analyzing you. His large hands gripping his book. 

“You aren’t a serial killer are you?” He asked suddenly, taking you by surprise. 

“Uhm, no.” You answered hesitantly. Raising an eyebrow at him. “Are you?” You drawled slowly, making his face break out in an adorable, heart melting smile.

“No.” He laughed. The sound was like music to your ears. You weren’t sure what to say next as you two stared at each other once again. 

“I don’t normally make offers like this, it’s quite odd,” Tom started. “But, if you really don’t have anywhere to go, you can stay at my place.” He offered, taking you even further by surprise. He must have noticed the expression on your face because he waved a hand through the air.

“It’s not weird. I’m not weird. This wouldn’t be weird.” He rattled on. “Please, I’m just trying my best to help you out.And you don’t have to say yes, nor do you have to stay the night.” He continued to fret on.

“You can use it as a safe house, sort to speak. Until you’ve found further arrangements.” His offer had taken really taken your wheels off the track and you couldn’t even register the thought for any words to form. Tom’s expression of concern transformed into panic.

“I’ve said the wrong thing.” His voice quiet. Brooding. Your eyebrows furrowed together in confusion. He was a roller coaster of thoughts at the moment and you could barely think.

“Tom,” you breathed, trying to slow his motions down. His body stopped suddenly at the sound of your voice. His green eyes faced you again, the intensity of them throwing you off kilter for a second. “Breathe.”

His body did the motions of him taking a deep breath. Tom’s shoulders rose and fell. You watched him cautiously. His actions were becoming drastic and you were curious why he was acting so strange. He was probably nervous. It was weird that he’d asked a total stranger to stay at his house but you understood that he just wanted to be a friend.

“Sorry, love.” Tom chided. His body still as he sat across from you. It made you want to laugh at how British he was for calling you love. But it also made you swoon like a silly school girl.

“It’s okay. And thank you for the offer but it is kind of weird.” You stated even though 80% of you screamed for you to go with him. He was a stranger. A very hot and generous stranger. Who’s smile was deadly and eyes so devishly alluring. And he was just so deliciously handsome. 

“Are you sure?” He asked followed by a small laugh that made your head tilt in confusion. “Your words are saying no but your eyes are saying yes.” He teased, his hands moving from the table top to his lap, on top of his coat. Your cheeks felt like they’d gone crimson red from his comment and you hadn’t realized he noticed how much you wanted to go with him.

“I have no words.” You shrugged, laughing for the first time all night. You watched as Tom’s eyes crinkled as he laughed along with you. The rain still poured outside and your heart ached for you to change your mind but you weren’t sure. He was a stranger. And that was the only thing holding you back?

“I’m going to call a cab.” Tom rose slowly from the booth, his eyes catching yours once more in a feeling of perplexed need. “I’ll wait for you, if that’s what you’d like.” Your stomach swirled and your heart thumped heavily. 

“I’ll just be a moment.” You said before you could think. His face broke out in that adorable smile once again. 

“Fantastic.” His voice charmed your ears and he shrugged his coat over his shoulders, stuffing his book into one of its many pockets. He grabbed the only umbrella in the small stand by the door, threw you a wink, and headed into the pounding rain storm.

“What the hell, (F/N)!” You scolded yourself, standing from the booth. You remembered in that moment how soaking wet you still were. Yours bags had made a pool of rainwater on the floor where they lay. The barista strolled over to you, his face was perky and he had a bounce in his step. You stared at him in question as you pulled your bag over your shoulder.

“He’s not a bad guy.” The barista, you recalled as Fredrick, spoke to you. “Really, best customer I have ever had. Always sits alone, though.” He added, giving you a cheeky smile. You scoffed at Fredrick before grabbing the small suitcase, it’s mass had become heavier from the rain.

“Thank you, Fredrick.” You smiled, he returned it and held the door open for you. You stepped out into the cold. The rain sprayed in every direction and you felt as if you were walking in a river.

Tom stood on the edge of the sidewalk, his hand raised, signalling a cab. His umbrella covered the features you wanted to see, you could only make out his coat and long legs. Reaching him was difficult as people with umbrellas barely noticed you and shoved past, making it like a maze to reach Tom. He saw you coming and reached out his arm, his large hand found your body and he pulled you to him just as a cab pulled up. Your eyes wandered up to his face, to absorb his beautiful features once again in the glorious, raining city light.

“What?” He asked loudly over the bustle of the city as the cab pulled over in front of you two.

“You’re so handsome.” You breathed out, just loud enough for Tom to hear. His features soften at your words and his grip around you tightened.

“It can get weird if you want it to.” Tom leaned into you to murmur the words into your ear. Your heart thumped more aggressively and your hands started shake in nerves but it was the good kind. The excited kind.

You couldn’t help yourself as you laughed, making Tom laugh alongside you. He helped you into the cab as the driver parked on the road side. Your bodies side-by-side in the back seat. Your hands touching. Your legs touching.

The cab pulled out quickly into the street. The rain hit the window and thudded loudly all around you. Surrounding you. You felt isolated in a whole different world in the back of that cab. There was no streets. There wasn’t a cab driver. But when you looked to your left. There was Tom. And his eyes smiled back at you.

Old Blood (Short Screenplay)

Well, I did not do well in the first round of the 2020 NYC Midnight Short Screenplay competition, with “A Taste Worth Savoring.” One point. Better than zero, sure, but still crummy. My only hope is that this one gets 15 points, and even then it’s a long shot.

"A pair of fraternity alumni bemoan what has become of their Alpha Omega, as they attend the initiation of its latest pledge. The active membership see a different problem altogether, one to be remedied once and for all, tonight."

INT. FUNERAL HOME - DAY

Two caskets, flowers, mourning family. A YOUNG BOY (10), wearing a suit, a FRESH SCAR on his chin, and a tear-streaked face sits alone in a chair. Nearby, FATHER CLAYTON (30s) speaks softly to a MIDDLE-AGED COUPLE.

FATHER CLAYTON

With every end comes a new beginning. They are with God now. One can only pray that the sad and unfortunate horrors that put them there will come to an end as a result of this, and leave the innocent among us in peace.

In the young boy's eyes, sadness becomes determination, and rage.

FATHER CLAYTON (O.C.)

(Trailing off)

Justice comes in many forms. I and the young brethren at the college will pray for ...

FADE TO:

EXT. WOODED PATH - FALL - NIGHT

GEORGE and ED (both 50s and overweight) huff along a dark, wooded path on a moonlit night, breath showing in the cold air. Both are squeezed into tattered fraternity letter jackets, Alpha Omega, their faces painted like skulls.

George takes a tentative sip from a bottle of alcoholic cider. Ed's hand enters frame and slaps the bottle from Frank's, sending it airborne.

ED

Jesus, G. Why you drinking that pussy shit?

GEORGE

It's all Christine will let me keep in the house. Better than nothing.

Ed eyes George as he takes a long pull from a pocket flask.

ED

No. No, it is not better than nothing. Here, I'm already fucked up.

Ed shoves the flask into George's chest. George accepts it, takes a sip, winces, coughs.

GEORGE

Where the hell is everyone?

ED

Probably up ahead with the pledge. I think they changed up how this works since we were active.

GEORGE

The school turned all religious and shit, hasn't recognized Greeks for years. So I guess they can do whatever the hell they want.

Ed scoffs.

ED

Not like that stopped us before. I hear it's a goddamn dry campus too. Shit. Poor bastards.

(Beat)

We the only alumni tonight?

GEORGE

Dunno. I guess. Sully fell off the face of the earth, MIA. Same with Pauly, Brian ... And you heard about Clem.

ED

Shit. Clem, yeah. His son Charlie was in the car too.

GEORGE

His own fault. He never learned to drive after a few measly tequila shots. Same thing with Gerry. Idiot left Mook's wedding, out of his mind, mowed down that kid and old couple. Gotta practice before driving that wasted. Now he's got twenty years left out of his thirty to serve.

ED

And Eric, slamming into that teacher. Mrs. Sutton, I think, right? Killed her. Stupid prick.

(Beat)

Hey wasn't Mook at last year's initiation? I couldn't make it until this year.

GEORGE

Same here. He said he was going, though, yeah. Never heard how it went.

George takes another drink from the flask, coughs.

GEORGE (CONT'D)

Guess we're a dying breed, you and me. If the booze itself doesn't kill us.

EXT. SMALL CLEARING - NIGHT

The two men emerge from the woods. In the clearing's center is a small, old, stone amphitheater, set into the ground. A HOODED PERSON is seated in a chair in the center of the amphitheater, a black, cloth sheet covering their head and upper half of their body. No one else is present.

GEORGE

What, just one pledge?

ED

This is pathetic. They gotta get their numbers up or there'll be no one left.

GEORGE

Alright, so what now?

Ed produces a paper note from a pocket.

ED

Invite says wear letters, skull-face, come to the initiation spot. That's it. So where the hell is everyone?

GEORGE

(Calling out)

George approaches the amphitheater, confused. A hooded person remains in the chair, but Ed can't be seen.

Twigs SNAP from the treeline. George wheels about to see nothing, as MOANING and WEEPING come from the person in the chair. George grins.

GEORGE

George enters the amphitheater, takes a long swig from Ed's flask. WEEPING continues.

GEORGE

Damn. One fucking pledge, and he's a blubbering pussy.

The whimpering becomes a GURGLING sound, then falls silent. George looks down to see a large, dark wet spot appearing on the seated person's lap. George laughs.

GEORGE

Holy shit, are you seriously pissing yourself right now?

Steam rises as the wet spot continues to grow, then down the person's pant legs. Confused, George watches as the pants become completely dark with wetness. A drip from a pant cuff onto the amphitheater floor, where the wetness remains dark. George bends for a closer look, sniffs the air, then dabs a finger into the puddle forming on the floor. In the moonlight, we see it is crimson. George stands slowly, pulls the sheet from the seated person's head.

It's Ed, motionless and silent, his throat slit ear-to-ear.

Before George can react, the blade of a large knife bursts through his chest from behind. Blood pours from his mouth as he gurgles and collapses into a heap on the floor. Standing there is a young PLEDGE (18), looking nervous but triumphant.

From the woods, FOOTFALLS, SNAPPING TWIGS. About thirty FRATERNITY BROTHERS enter the clearing. Their leader, ALPHA (20) enters the amphitheater. He has a familiar OLD SCAR on his chin. He picks up the dropped flask from the floor.

ALPHA

Two in one night. Well done. You should be proud.

(Louder)

We should all be proud! But this was the last of them. The last of the old ways. Now their legacy will no longer threaten the lives of current and future generations of our brotherhood, tainting the Alpha Omegas and what we stand for! Their deaths have helped ensure the safety of the pure and innocent. And with them goes the poison that sustained their kind for so long.

Alpha pours out the contents of the flask into the puddles of blood on the floor.

The Murphys Versus The Zombies

A few years ago, on a Sunday in December, I watched “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation,” followed by an episode of “The Walking Dead.”  It got me thinking about how interesting it might be if a white bread suburban family were living in a zombie apocalypse.  I worked on the screenplay for a while, but after “Fear The Walking Dead” came out, I decided to abandon it.  Here are some fun highlight moments.  Enjoy.  

FADE IN:  INT.  SUBURBAN KITCHEN - DAY

The camera weaves through a sunny, pleasant suburban kitchen.  No one is home.  A sign reading “Bless This Mess” hangs over the sink.  Happy family photos are attached to the refrigerator with plastic fruit-shaped magnets.  It’s a nice kitchen, one suggesting a nice family living a nice life.  

After a moment, the phone rings.  The answering machine picks up.  The recorded voices are perky, friendly, carefree.  

BILL:  You’ve reached Bill. KATE:  Kate. AMANDA:  Amanda. DAVEY:  And Davey.  And we’re- ALL FOUR:  The Murphys!   KATE:  Leave a message.  

After a quick beep, we hear grotesque sounds of monsters groaning, chomping, screams, mayhem, police sirens, the end of the world.  

MAN:  It’s the zombies!  They’re everywhere!  Everywhere!  Get out!  Get out while you still can!  GET OUT BEFORE THEY-  

The man suddenly screams in pain!  The connection is abruptly cut off.  The sound of the ring tone continues as we dissolve to the title:  

                     THE MURPHYS VERSUS THE ZOMBIES

Cut to:  

EXT.  HIGHWAY – DAY

A wood paneled station wagon sits stalled out on a highway road, the only car for miles.  It is surrounded by four ravenous zombies.  

INT.  CAR - DAY

The family inside is freaking out, screaming, terrified.  BILL (46), a congenial suburban dad is in the driver’s seat.  Next to him is KATE, his perky wife (42).  

In the backseat are petulant teenager AMANDA (16), nerdy tween DAVEY (11) and the mostly useless, mildly disgusting GRANDPA (71).  

The zombies press their faces up to the windows, hungry for brains.  Inside the car, it’s pure chaos.  Everyone is talking all at once.  Bill attempts to get the car started.  

KATE:  Just drive, Bill!  Drive!   BILL:  Don’t you think I’m trying, mother?!   GRANDPA:  They’re getting closer!   DAVEY:  Shoot the fuckers!   KATE:  Davey, language!  

A zombie attempts to reach through the window to get at Amanda, who struggles desperately to roll the window up.

GRANDPA:  Quick!  Roll it up!   AMANDA:  I can’t!  It’s stuck!   KATE:  Everyone just calm down- BILL:  Panic isn’t going to solve anything-

One zombie has reached through the window and has managed to grab a hold of Amanda’s hair.  The girl begins to seriously freak out.

AMANDA:  NOW IT HAS MY HAIR!!  

EXT.  FOREST – DAY

Later, Bill and Kate sit, relaxed, at a picnic table.  They talk to an (off-camera) interviewer.

KATE:  Raising a family in a zombie apocalypse is a challenge.  No question about it.  

EXT.  FOREST CLEARING - DAY

Family mealtime.  The Murphys sit together on a blanket on the ground, quietly saying grace.  Each person has a single can of ravioli in front of them, the lid crudely hinged open.    

KATE (VOICE OVER):  I’m Kate Murphy.   BILL (VOICE OVER):  And I’m Bill Murphy.  I used to be in sales…  

INSERT SHOT:  Photo of an awards banquet, where Bill is receiving a plaque.  

BILL (VOICE OVER):  I was regional number one in sales, three years running.  

EXT.  FOREST - DAY

Amanda stands alone, filing her nails, bored.

KATE (VOICE OVER):  And we have two lovely children.  Amanda is sixteen.  And Davey is eleven…  

After a moment, Davey approaches, hiding something behind his back.  

DAVEY:  Hey, sis?   AMANDA:  (annoyed)  What? DAVEY:  BLAH!  

He suddenly thrusts a disembodied arm at her.  She screams, and he roars with laughter.  

KATE (OFF CAMERA):  Put that arm down this instant, young man! DAVEY:  (whinny)  Aw, but mom… KATE (OFF CAMERA):  No but’s, young man! BILL (OFF CAMERA):  Listen to your mother!  

EXT.  ROAD – DAY

The station wagon travels down a small town road.  There are no other humans present. It looks like a war zone.  Homes have been abandoned.  Trash is everywhere.  A car sits parked on the sidewalk, on fire.  A zombie crawls slowly across a lawn.  

BILL (VOICE OVER):  We’re always on the go.  A day here.  A week there.  We keep moving. KATE (VOICE OVER):  We’re hoping to find the safe zone.  A place where survivors are.   BILL (VOICE OVER):  Or just find any other human survivors…  So far, nothing.  Nada.  Zip.    

INT.  STATION WAGON – NIGHT

The exhausted family rides along, depressed, tired, silent.  They all wear “snuggies.”  

BILL (VOICE OVER):  In the meantime, we’re committed to our normal way of life.  

EXT.  CAMPFIRE – NIGHT

The Murphys sit in a circle around the campfire.  Davey plays a song on his trombone.  They listen politely and applaud when he finishes.  

KATE (VOICE OVER):  Absolutely.  We want to preserve our way of life as much as possible.  

EXT.  FOREST - DAY

Bill and Kate are interviewed.    

BILL:  I mean, sure.  You have to make some adjustments.  No doubt about it.   KATE:  We’ve been home schooling the kids.  

She laughs.  

KATE:  Well, naturally…  There are no schools.   BILL:  There’s no more people, mother.   KATE:  I mean, I tell the kids, just because there’s a zombie apocalypse, that’s still no excuse not to learn fractions.  

INT.  KITCHEN - DAY

Kate and Davey sit together at the kitchen table.  They are reviewing his math homework.  

They pay no attention to Bill, who is fighting off a pair of zombies at the kitchen sink.  Just another day for the Murphys.   Bill grabs a rolling pin, the kind used to make piecrusts.  He swings it at the first zombie, knocking its head right off its shoulders.

BILL (VOICE OVER):  We had found a house that we thought we could stay in…  Turns out we couldn’t.  So we’re on the move.  Again...  

The second zombie jumps at Bill, who stabs it in the head with a Mickey Mouse-themed spatula.  Down the creature goes.  

EXT.  REST STOP - DAY

KATE:  These are Hallmark cards.  People would give them to each other for birthdays, holidays, what have you.  And this is a catalog from Williams Sonoma…  My Jell-O molds…

She reviews what else is inside the box.  

KATE:  I don’t want all of western civilization to go to H.E. Double Hockey Sticks.  And to that end, I’ve taken it upon myself to collect and preserve important artifacts from our way of life, for future generations and what not.  

She holds up a DVD of “Love, Actually.”  

KATE:  My favorite!...  Here’s some more.  “The Notebook” on DVD...  A menu from the Olive Garden…  These books have the artwork of Mr. Norman Rockwell and Mr. Thomas Kincaid…  

EXT.  FOREST - DAY

Davey sit at the picnic table being interviewed.  

DAVEY:  How old am I?  I have no idea...  I think I’m twelve now.  We’ve sort of lost track of the days.  (He shrugs.)  Maybe I’m still eleven…  

EXT.  FOREST - DAY

Bill and Kate are interviewed.  

KATE:  We realized that poor Amanda never got to have her high school prom.  Because everyone died.   BILL:  We felt bad.  About the prom.  And all the death.   KATE:  So we decided to throw her one.  

EXT.  FOREST CLEARING - DAY

A section of the forest has been crudely decorated for a makeshift prom.  Cardboard decorations have been attached to the trees.  

Amanda approaches, apparently coming back from a walk.  Bill and Kate go to her, excited.  

AMANDA:  What’s going on? KATE:  It’s your prom, honey! BILL:  Surprise!   AMANDA:  I don’t get it.   BILL:  You never got your high school prom.  So we’re throwing you one!   AMANDA:  I- KATE:  And here’s your handsome prom date!  

Amanda turns to see old Grandpa standing nearby, waiting, smiling at her.  He wears a black tuxedo jacket over his normal clothes and holds a random selection of flowers in his hand.  They were apparently put together from whatever was available.  

He’s smiling, attempting to pour on the charm.  But he’s just as off-putting and disgusting as ever.  Amanda looks like she’s going to be sick.

KATE:  Welcome to your prom!   AMANDA:  Mom, Dad, I don’t think-

Kate turns to Davey, who stands off to the side, trombone in hand.  

KATE:  Play some music, Davey. DAVEY:  Like what? KATE:  A nice waltz.  Something romantic.   DAVEY:  A what?!   KATE:  A nice waltz.  You know… DAVEY:  I don’t know any. KATE:  Well, just play what you know.  Play anything.  

After a moment, Davey begins playing “The 1812 Overture” on his trombone.  

Grandpa hands Amanda the flowers.  She looks down at them, unsure of where to put them or what to do.  After a moment, she shrugs and tosses them indifferently on the ground.              

KATE:  OK, kids.  Time for the first dance.    

Amanda and Grandpa begin to slow dance awkwardly to the music.  The whole thing seems too bizarre for words.  Still, Bill and Kate are very pleased.  They watch from the sidelines, satisfied with what they’ve created.

AMANDA (VOICE OVER):  I’d be lying if I said that this was how I always imagined my high school prom would be.  Grandpa smelled, for starters…  

EXT.  FOREST - DAY

Amanda is interviewed alone, later.  

AMANDA:  …But then I saw something that really surprised me...  

EXT.  FOREST CLEARING - DAY

As Amanda dances, she looks over at her parents, watching from off to the side.  Bill and Kate are standing together, holding each other, smiling and watching, very happy.  

AMANDA (VOICE OVER):  It was the look in my parent’s eyes…  They were smiling.  And I hadn’t seen them smile like that in a long time.  A very long time…  

SOUND:  Davey’s trombone music fades down, slowly replaced by a lush orchestral waltz.  

Bill and Kate continue to watch, very pleased.  They don’t notice how struck Amanda is by their reaction.  

AMANDA (VOICE OVER):  They went to so much trouble.  I guess they wanted a moment when things were normal.  For all of us.  For me.  It was their gift to me…  

Amanda turns back to Grandpa and smiles, trying to make the best of it.  

AMANDA (VOICE OVER):  And so I decided that my gift to them would be to enjoy it.

Bill and Kate look on from a distance, very satisfied.  Finally, the Murphys are enjoying a moment of normalcy, of happiness, of togetherness.   Amanda and Grandpa continue to dance.  Camera pulls slowly back and up.  A moment passes.

DAVEY (VOICE OVER):  …What do I miss most, now that the world is over?  That’s a hard one...  Not church!...  Video games, probably.  That, and the Disney Channel...  

KATE (VOICE OVER):  …My Kenmore dryer…  And my washer.  Both of them, actually.  Those were quality appliances, yes sir...  And the bread maker...  

BILL (VOICE OVER):  …The Electoral College…  Ha!  Just kidding!...  I guess my answer would be bowling every Thursday night with the Petersons…  My blue Prius…  NPR...  

AMANDA (VOICE OVER):  …Going out with my friends to the mall.  And my friends.  And malls…  

Amanda and Grandpa continue to dance.  

DISSOLVE TO:  

EXT.  FOREST ROAD - DAY

The Murphy’s wood paneled station wagon (seen from the back) sits parked, empty.  On the back is a fading bumper sticker with an image of a zombie in a circle with a line drawn through.

BILL (VOICE OVER):  What does the future hold?  Who can say?  It’s my hope that one day, we’ll find the safe zone…  

After a moment, the Murphys appear.  They slowly approach the car, tired and silent.  They get in and close the doors.  Bill starts up the engine.  

BILL (VOICE OVER):  And then we can rebuild society.  Until then, well, we have each other.  We’re the Murphys.  And we endure.  

The car heads down the road, into the distance until finally it disappears from view.    

After a moment, about half way down the road, a lone male zombie appears from the forest.  He stumbles across the road and then slowly disappears into the trees.  

FADE OUT.
