We are proud graduates of South Carolina State University and as farmers, Morning Glory Homestead Farm is so proud of our dear Mrs. Pearlie Brantley, a.k.a. “Ms. Pearlie”! She is the the heart of the Hampton Cluster 1890 Extension office in Varnville, SC. Ms. Pearlie works with Senior/Lead agent, our fearless leader, Mr. Ismael Washington, Mr. Cornelius Hamilton, Youth Agent program 4H agent, Mrs. Esther Manuel, over family education and nutrition services. Ms. Pearlie contacts farmers, keeps the office running, handles communications, administration matters, hospitality; you name it, she does it! Congratulations Ms. Pearlie on being the Employee of the Year. I know I can speak on behalf of all the farmers, gardeners and crocheters, seamstresses and the community at large when I say, “we love you and appreciate you”! #scsu #southcarolinastatecollege #scstatebulldogs #hbcu #hbcupride #hbcugrads #hbcugrad #1890extension #farm #blackfarmers #extensionservices #landgrant #landgrantuniversities #scstateuniversitybulldogs #scsurotc #scsutennis #veteranfarmer #blackfarmers #agriculture #agricultureeducation #farmextensionservice (at SC State University) https://www.instagram.com/p/B87mpxsA2dV/?igshid=utisbjq7uib4

Memory from 2016 Sarah and I made it to the SCSU 1890 Extension craft meeting today, the last one for the year. We had a great time. Sarah is trying to knit again and Mrs. Manuel the mtg. leader gave her some wonderful tips. We didn't even know Mrs. Manuel knita, she hadn't mentioned it. It was our turn to share refreshments, holiday finger foods are so tasty especially when there's apple cider to go along with them. We're looking forward to meetings in the New Year. #crochet #crafts #sewing #knitting #quilting #learning #Extensionservice #hbcu #thearts #yarnart #needlecraft #gullah #gullahgeechee #scsu1890extension #homeeconomics #hbcupride #hbcugrad #hbculove #hbcualumni #hamptoncounty #beaufortcounty #extensionservice #communitysupport #familyservice #rurallife #ruralamerica #ruralcommunities #ruralcrafts #makersmovement #makerlife (at Hampton County, South Carolina) https://www.instagram.com/p/CIyTUCyh7Rm/?igshid=1rh0vilxbtqyj

Being a part of the @penncenter Heritage Days Celebration on Youth Day is always a pleasure. As a farm we have the opportunity to share with school groups about our work, showcase some of our animals, teach about farming practices, and encourage healthier food selections. We talked about embryology, chick development in the egg, hatching day, showed 3varieties of chickens and ducks, brought our new guineas. Our presentation also included information about Dr. George Washington Carver, his life, inventions and work as an Farm Extension agent at @tuskegeeuniversity. We shared some of his recipes found in the African American Cookbook, and had peanut plants on display. The late Isabella Glen a form PennSchool student wrote in her memoir about Dr. Carvers visit to Penn while she was a student. Finally, we gave visitors an opportunity to grind corn using our corn mill. It was a fantastic day to share #Gullah culture and traditions, sustainable farming and the great work of the Penn School. The display adjacent to us were our friends from South Carolina State University 1890 Research and Extension Service where we both attended and received ur BS in Political Science and History. #SCSU #farm #farmlife #farming #farmpractices #farmtoschool #penncenter #penncenter1862 #sthelenaisland #sthelenaislandsc #penncenterheritageday #celebrations #farmdays #veteranfarmer #veteranfarmercoalition #farmlife #mobilefarm #teachingfarm #beaufortcountysc #beaufortcountyschools #beaufortcountyschooldistrict #cornmill #grindingcorn #grits #cornmeal #localfood #extensionservice #landgrantuniversities #hbcu #1890s (at Morning Glory Homestead) https://www.instagram.com/p/B4uswsKAa7D/?igshid=wtei0otymtne

Monday evening Morning Glory Farm prepared the containers at our local library for the fall planting and planted #seeds and started #plants . A few years ago we attended the training program offered by @clemson_extension to educators and 4-H agents and volunteers. “The program is part of a multi-agency, farm-to-school initiative, directed by the College of Charleston, aimed at improving academic and health outcomes among South Carolina children and opening the school nutrition market to local farmers.” So now we help start gardens in our community to benefit children. This is now year 3 at the library. The goal is to have as many children involved in the project as possible. They along with the library staff and patrons will be able to taste the produce and enjoy its beauty. Planted in the box, #collardgreens , #carrots , #radishes , #beets , #lettuce , #broccoli , and #beans . #sweetpeas were planted in a separate container. This allows children to participate in a garden project who are homeschooled or attend a school without a garden. #garden #gardening #schoolgardens #communitygarden #communitygardens #library #librarygarden #4h #lettuce #containergardening #ediblekidsgardens #kidsgardening #gardeningwithkids #eatlocal #eatlocalgrown #eathealthy #goodfood #seeds #gardenseeds #seedfairy #botanicalinterestsseeds #extensionservices #growfood (at St Helena Branch Library) https://www.instagram.com/p/B2zBlE3g6ja/?igshid=1hr6naehwzt54
