A camping experience with classes and activities centered around the life of Dr. George Washington Carver. Participants will receive detailed information about Dr. Carver, his discoveries, hobbies and his faith. There will be STEAM activities centered around the use of microscopes, making slides, gathering specimen, observing nature and journaling. Painting and crafting will be done, planting seeds and more. Camper can stay in site in tents or campers or commute. Come one day or everyday. A variety of ticket options are available at the farm website along with the schedule and meal choices. This is a repeating event. There are dates in August and future dates this fall will be announced soon.

Farm Friends, we are sharing more more about how we’re eating what we grow, the concoctions we are making and enjoying straight from the field to the table. In August we had a day celebrating Dr. George Washington Carver as a beekeeper. We harvested honey followed by a Carver inspired meal , of Ground nut chicken and a farm salad with okra, cucumber, onions, and field pea sprouts.

Well we’re using the sprouts in more ways. We were going to make a Mess O’Greens Salad from the Dori Sanders Country Cookbook today and add a few other ingredients to include the pea sprouts I decided to incorporate the salad into a wrap still using the sprouts. This wrap has ham, havarti cheese, a mess of greens just picked, pea sprouts, toasted local pecans, dried cranberries, and tomato with a vidalia onion vinaigrette. Y’all, it’s so delicious. Of course you can use the leafy greens as the wrap and leave out the meat and or the cheese. Either combination would be so good and another way to enjoy what’s growing regularly.

By the way, we spoke with Ms. Dori Sanders and she is doing well. Please consider purchasing her country cookbook to make recipes that are true southern cuisine. The Mess O’Green Salad is just one of many recipes that you can make and enjoy throughout the year. Also, you will find the stories of her family and the Upstate history educational. Ms. Dori is recipient of the 2011 Southern Foodways Alliance Craig Claiborne lifetime achievement award winner and New York Times bestseller author of the novel Clover. @southfoodways

Our farm began as a homestead where we homeschooled our five children and taught them among other things the value of self sufficiency. Lessons included gardening and animal husbandry along with hand skills. The first “farm animals” they raised for a school project were chickens. Our oldest son started a business selling eggs and later our youngest daughter took egg selling to another leve. We acquired an egg selling license from the SC Department of Agriculture, ordered cartoons and she found customers. Chickens aren’t the only animals our children have raised but they have proven to be the most profitable. They sold eggs and later turned that business over to us as they pursued other interests. It was a wonderful experience for all of us and we have expanded upon it even more. This book “One Hen”, tells the story of Kojo. His story is inspired by the life of Kwabena Darko, who as a boy started a tiny poultry farm just like Kojo's, which later grew to be the largest in Ghana, and one of the largest in west Africa. Kwabena also started a trust that gives out small loans to people who cannot get a loan from a bank. One Hen shows what happens when a little help makes a big difference. The final pages of One Hen explain the microloan system and include a list of relevant organizations for children to explore. We recommend this book for kids and youth interested in #animalhusbandry , entrepreneurship and basic life skills. All of our children have gained skills while living on the farm they have used at some point and time to earn money whether it is cooking, selling produce, egg sales, selling a hog at the fair, or writing about the local Gullah #history and folklore, historical persons and sharing about it in stories or song. Yesterday we participated in Youth and Family Day @penncenter Our Farm had a display that included guineas, ducks, and chickens. We also had a piece about Dr. George Washington Carver, his career and his visit to the Penn School as a guess speaker. A book by the late Isabella Glen, a former Penn School student included the account of his visit. We had whole corn on hand for visitors to grind, books and resources about farming and honey, seeds and plants.. it was great fun to talk with school groups about breeds of fowl, embryology, egg shells and colors, the term cage free, free ranged etc. Showing kids how we get grits, corn meal and polenta. We spoke with teachers about the School Gardens for SC Educators program. Yesterday we moved the younger meat birds to the chicken tractor. The tractor is moved daily around the property to fresh grass, it’s currently being moved through the orchard. I had a little talk with one of the juevies as we strolled to his new location. We spend time with the birds to assess their health and size.
