The late Helen DuBose, was a giant in the world of agriculture! “A granddaughter of a farmer, Helen was not only the first to graduate from college in her family, she was the first in her family since slavery to finish the 6th grade. Determined to get an agricultural degree, she received a bachelor's degree in 1941 from Florida A&M. We want to give a shout out to our friends at Bob's Biddies Hatchery,LLC in our neighboring state of Georgia. We ordered some True Dominique (Dominecker) chicks from them a few years back and have always had an interest in their meat birds. We called and left a message today and within an hour they returned our call. We had a fine conversation with them and found out those tornadoes that went through Georgia yesterday touched down near them in Ray City. Thank God they didn’t have any damage to speak of, just debris from limbs etc. Well, we wanted to order from them again and they were happy to fit us in as returning customers in spite of the large increase of orders they have. These folks are friendly and kind. Also, they have a grandson who is a Warrant Officer stationed at Parris Island. Bob nearly lost his sight years ago and his wife gave him 2 second hand incubators as she said”to give him something to do after retirement“. Bob and his wife Diane have a wonderful, family hatchery that has grown and they are always ready to help out! We placed our order and look forward to raising some more fine meat birds for our community. Also, Bob’s Biddies is featured in this article “AgrAbility Georgia OffersAssistance and Hope for Farm Workers With Disabilities”. Tony attended the National Agribility Conference in 2019 as a Veteran with Disabilities to bring back information to our community. She is the the heart of the Hampton Cluster 1890 Extension office in Varnville, SC. Ms. Pearlie works with Senior/Lead agent, our fearless leader, Mr. Ismael Washington, Mr. Cornelius Hamilton, Youth Agent program 4H agent, Mrs. Esther Manuel, over family education and nutrition services. Last week we attended the 2019 Coastal Research and Education Center Field Day on Wednesday, June 5. It was a great event that provided opportunities to visit plots on the research station to see first hand the work being done to improve farming practices in our state and beyond. As we revamp our lessons on Dr. George Washington Carver, we’d like to recommend this book, In the Garden with Dr. Carver, by Susan Grisby, illustrated by Nicole Tadgell. “It's Sunday and Sally is walking out of church and into a world of plants and learning and Dr. George Washington Carver. Dr. Carver has driven his Jesup Wagon to Sally's town to teach the families in this part of Alabama how to improve their soil. The cotton crop long grown in that region has depleted the soil and Dr. Carver knows the soil needs nutrients and he explains to the farmers how they can use natural things around them to help restore the lost nourishment. Dr. Carver even comes to Sally's school and inspires them to begin their own garden plot in a worn out section out back. They plant sweet potatoes, peas and squash and they learn the oh so important lesson that everything in nature is connected. The spider you see waiting on her web is doing the invaluable job of eating the garden pests that might damage the plants so she needs to be respected and protected. The important contribution of Dr. Carver is brought to life in this warmly illustrated picture book. There's a timeless quality to the pictures and that combines with the important message of the important work of this man who made such a great contribution. 32 pages Ages 5-9”. Two days ago Tony, @amjones42, picked beans from the field. We love how beautiful speckled butter beans are. There wasn’t enough for the speckled beans and Lima beans to be separately so we cooked them together as we often do. They we were so delicious tonight along with brown rice and braised rosemary chicken thighs and andouille sausage. We’re newly committed to a low to no sodium seasoning so Mrs. Dash makes more appearances during meal preparation.
