Fuck me, so I got into Stardew mods, right? On this my second modded run, I add LoveofCooking and pretty much the whole PPJA suite. Amongst others, but let’s focus here
BECAUSE I ENJOY COMPLETIONISM, I want to get Perfection from Qi, right? Requiring all shipped things, all cooked things, etc
There’s shit you CAN’T GET in the game but are REQUIRED for Perfection. When I sayĀ ā€œcan’t getā€ I mean either the recipe is broken, there ISN’T a recipe, or there isn’t a recipe AND you can’t buy the fucking thing. I don’t code yet, but I can adequately poke shit until it works, so I went into the various .jsons to figure it the fuck out. SUCCESSFULLY, much to my satisfaction
Buuuuuuut at least for the PPJA stuff, there’s no section I can find anywhere to post my solutions for whomever else is losing their mind? Maybe there’s a discord I’m ignoring, but on Nexus the mod authors took away the posts/bugs tabs, and I didn’t see any comment sections on any of the, like, five or eight semi-defunct wikis and githubs and everything. Love the PPJA stuff, it’s a massive endeavor. Probably stripped out the interaction options because they have enough to do, but it definitely leaves the users in aĀ ā€œfigure it out or get fuckedā€ situation
So anyway here’s some of my fuckin notes, added as I find and figure them out
ā€Brokenā€ = recipe / producer rules exist in .json, but can’t be used in-game (for machines, sometimes because of duplicate InputIdentifiers)
ā€Missingā€ = recipe / producer rules straight don’t exist in .json, but item is required for Shipping or Cooking perfection. You can tell what these are by using LookUpAnything (or checking every Objects folder, if you hate yourself) (Updated w/ more fixes) PPJA - ARTISAN VALLEY
Sorbet MachineĀ -- go into the PFM folder to the ProducerRules.json
BROKEN: Strawberry Dragon Fruit Fruit Sorbet, Dragon Fruit Sorbet
swap duplicate InputIdentifier and one of its AdditionalFuels. Make sure all InputIdentifiers are unique
MISSING: Mango Passion Fruit Fruit Sorbet
copy/paste one of the working rules and change out the InputIdentifier/AdditionalFuels. Use item description and/or culinary judgement for ingredients
Ice Cream MachineĀ -- this ain’t the mod’s fault, but the 3rd party DocumentationĀ erroneously lists banana sapling as an ingredient for Banana Ice Cream, but you just need a damn banana. IQ of lots but that took me WAY too long to figure out
Keg / StillĀ -- go into the PFM folder to the ProducerRules.json
BROKEN: Cauim
move this to Still section, changeĀ ā€œKegā€ toĀ ā€œStillā€ Ā  Ā { Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā "ProducerName": "Keg", Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā "InputIdentifier": "Cassava", Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā "InputStack": 1, Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā "MinutesUntilReady": 2360, Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā "OutputIdentifier": "Cauim", Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā "Sounds": ["Ship"], Ā  Ā },
VariousĀ -- go into the JA folder, Objects folder, relevant item folder, object.json items needed for the Shipping collection that don’t have a recipe BECAUSE THEIR INGREDIENTS DON’T EXIST YET.
MISSING: Carolina Reaper Extract, Ghost Pepper Extract, Poblano Extract, Scotch Bonnet Extract, Serrano Extract
add this to the line after recipe, adjusting From/Price as needed "CanPurchase": true, "PurchaseFrom": "Gus", "PurchasePrice": 1000,
PPJA - FRESH MEAT
DNA SequencerĀ -- go into the PFM folder to the ProducerRules.json
BROKEN: Chicken DNA, Duck DNA
either: change OutputProbability from 1 to .5Ā
or: remove this from select Chicken/Duck input options, using a list of Vanilla item codes to figure out InputIdentifiers (I took it off duck feather & void egg): Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā "AdditionalOutputs": [ Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā { Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā "OutputProbability": 1, Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā "OutputIdentifier": "Bird DNA", Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā }, ],
RecipesĀ -- go into the JA folder, Objects folder, relevant item folder, object.json
BROKEN: Barbecue Sausage, Beast n’ Onion Handpie, Chicken Nuggets, Chippy Curry, Cottage Pie, Fish and Chips, Phoenix Au Vin, Schnitzel, Spaghetti Bolognese, Sweet and Sour Pork with Rice, Sweet n’ Sour Bites, Teriyaki, Venison Handpie,Ā
either: add this line after PurchasePrice, adjusting requirements if needed "PurchaseRequirements": ["HasCookingRecipe Batter", "y 3",],
or: add missing comma after quotes in PurchaseRequirements (or at end of PurchaseRequirements line)
or: add this line above PurchaseFrom (if the IsDefault line is there, replace with this) Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā "CanPurchase": true,
or: make sure the brackets above PurchaseFrom are }], not },],
BROKEN: Roasted Fowl
just replace all lines between Count and NameLocalization with this (it’s all sorts of fucked up) Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā }], Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā "PurchaseFrom": "Gus", Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā "PurchasePrice": 2000, Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā "PurchaseRequirements": ["HasCookingRecipe Batter", "y 3",], Ā  Ā }, Ā  Ā "NameLocalization": Ā  Ā {
BROKEN: Tonkatsu
same as above, replace all lines between Count and NameLocalization with this Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā }], Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā "CanPurchase": true, Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā "PurchaseFrom": "Gus", Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā "PurchasePrice": 2000, Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā "PurchaseRequirements": ["HasCookingRecipe Batter", "y 4",], Ā  Ā },
FRESH MEAT FOR BUG NET
DNA SequencerĀ -- in ProducerRules.json
BROKEN: every single goddamn one
for each, replaceĀ ā€œCritter Cage - ā€ withĀ ā€œCritter Cage: ā€
fucking hell
MISSING: Critter DNA
where appropriate (I did everything except birds), add this after Sounds line Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā "AdditionalOutputs": [ Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā { Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā "OutputProbability": .5, Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā "OutputIdentifier": "Critter DNA", Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā }, ],
PPJA - EVEN MORE RECIPES
CookingĀ - go into the JA folder, Objects folder, item folder, object.json
MISSING: Black Coffee, Milky Coffee, Milky Strawberry Juice, Peach Milk, Pathos Cookie, Cola can purchase product from Gus, but recipe itself doesn’t exist. Needed for Cooking perfection
replace Recipe line through PurchasePrice line with the following. Edit Ingredients/From/Price as needed (this was Pathos Cookie) Ā  Ā "Recipe": Ā  Ā { Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā "ResultCount": 1, Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā "Ingredients": [ Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā { Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā "Object": 246, Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā "Count": 1, Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā }, Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā { Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā "Object": 260, Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā "Count": 1, Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā }, Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā { Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā "Object": "Mint", Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā "Count": 1, Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā }, Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā ], Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā "CanPurchase": true, Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā "PurchaseFrom": "Gus", Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā "PurchasePrice": 700, Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā },Ā Ā
BROKEN: Lemon Pie, Meuniere, Halloumi Burger, Salmon Fillet
either: add missing comma after quotes in PurchaseRequirements
or: add this line above PurchaseFrom (if the IsDefault line is there, replace with this) Ā  Ā  Ā  "CanPurchase": true,
**Halloumi Burger, might need to deleteĀ ā€œBreadā€ from PurchaseRequirements, leaving justĀ ā€œHalloumiā€ (I edited several things, so not sure what all fixed it, butĀ ā€œHalloumi Breadā€ isn’t an actual recipe, so requiring it means you’ll never meet that requirement)
LOVE OF COOKING
VariousĀ -- go to assets --> (eg)NettlesPack --> Objects --> (eg)Nettle Tea --> object.json
MISSING: Nettle Tea, Cider, maybe others?
changeĀ ā€œCanPurchaseā€ to true (default.json in i18n folder says you learn how to brew Nettle Tea as a cooking skill level-up bonus, NO EFFING CLUE how to make that not glitched. Game currently requires it for Shipping, not Cooking)
FORAGE OF FERNGILL
Kombucha Jar --Ā  go into the PFM folder to the ProducerRules.json
BROKEN: Salty Kombucha, Sour Kombucha
replace ContextTags in the InputIdentifiers with object names or vanilla Item IDs
duplicate entire entry w/ new InputIdentifier to have multiple possible inputs

100 Days of Productivity . Day 67-68-ish
🐾 Been keeping up with GSD’s training walks
At first just in the mornings, I added a second in the evenings. I’ve noticed the cool air, serenity ,and stretching our legs is a good start for us both. I’m in a better mood by the time I get to my first cup of coffee.
šŸ’œ Helped Kiddo with Girl Scout stuff
Zoom has opened so many interesting doors. ļæ¼Pretty cool women on the forensics ļæ¼team of the F.B.I. had a booth to explain to the girls about how they use science to solve crimes and a female department head gave education/career track info then they offered a Q&A after in chat. We also managed to catch the Storytellers’ Workshop, which was a fun think tank for my lil writer.ļæ¼
šŸ’™ I Drew
Two TEDTalks about time prioritization really got me thinking about how I’ve been squandering my tidbits of timeļæ¼ by mindlessly scrolling rather than doing something that ā€˜feels good’ for my self esteem. In the spirit of reconnecting with things at once brought me joy when I was younger like how I now play the Sims, bought a hamster wheel,ļæ¼ and have started this journal, once upon a time when I was bored or had nothing better to do I would doodle randomness. I didn’t set out to draw an emotionally charged representation of my soulļæ¼. I had five minutes to kill. I ļæ¼drew things like storks balanced on basketballs. I drew whatever nonsense popped into my head.ļæ¼
Tumblr media
ā¤ļø Got everyone out of the house into the sunshine
šŸ’œ Had Kiddo’s photography printed up into a hard cover bookļæ¼
🐾 Introduced GSD to RB’s cats for the first time
...which... could have gone better šŸ˜… but could have gone worse so... sun zero?
āļø I feel like we weekend’ed well 😊
Saturday I’m in one of those moods where I need a clone or two to be all the things I am attempting to do, but it all worked out in a haphazard way. Thanks to Pandemic Life, Kiddo is learning about DNA extraction and fingerprint collecting. I’ve decided to sit in my windowsill near sunshine, near an April breeze with my sketchbook contemplating the statistics I’m avoidingļæ¼.. and this feels better to me than the autopilotļæ¼ I’ve slumped into. If I were chitchatting with a stranger about how I spend my time I would feel good about drawing, but not describing hours amiss in screen lull.ļæ¼
RB, Kiddo and I have our first warm spring outing: at the park we make conversation with geese, ducks, and chickensļæ¼.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Parenting Win: Kiddo mentions eavesdropping on that TEdtalk I was watching about time prioritization and how she found it interesting.
She brings it up again later wanting me to explain how a routine can be a good, but apparently, also ļæ¼sometimes also a bad thing? I give kid friendly examples about how routines do help us get things done with less battery usage on our brains, but the talk pointed out our everyday routines can also be habits that don’t add to our happiness and sometimes a routine can even take us further away from what brings us happiness, so it’s important to regularly consider if how we spend our time can be tweaked to bring us more joy or builds up to more joy.
We all find a spot on the grass, shaded, yet sun-kissed. ļæ¼ RB and I pass a sketchbook back and forth, adding to the obscurity with each turn: squiggles become a staircase. Bricks become bubbles. There’s a fish with pants tap dancing on a UFO. ļæ¼
Kiddo, Who knows everything at 10, did not follow my instructions to bring things to amuse herself. Guided by the timeless spirits of childhood, she eventually found the architectural splendorļæ¼ of building with sticksļæ¼. I sometimes worry that over a year of being mostly comfortably indoors (The most subdued, easy-going of plagues history seen)ļæ¼, she may have forgotten how to be bored, how to invent her own entertainment in nature, but in this moment as she builds her little hut with the utmost focus, I know she is alright.ļæ¼ she reflects on the temporary satisfaction of her stick creation, reflecting onļæ¼ its impermanence. Eventually it collapses. She’s on a mission for more structurally sound branches. I guess the tail end of that architecture workshop at the STEM fair that afternoon made an impression after all?
There’s something hilarious, almost satirical, that her new favorite stuffed animal is the plague doctor plushy.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
ļæ¼She’s ecstatic to discover a secret garden within the bushes that will look even more impressive once the green has fully bloomedļæ¼. We have to leave soon. I surprise her by shaping her fallen twigs into a smiley face for her to return to. We agree to leave it for someone else to find.
Later RB ordered usļæ¼ some exceptionally tasty pad Thai, colorful with crisp veggies and peanut crumbles.ļæ¼. Kiddo requested Movie Night, so we found something on Amazon that was one of the darkest kids movies I’ve ever watched, morbid plot only softened by cute, CGI cats. Kiddo didn’t seem to mind though. She’s just glad for the icing on the cake to an already sweet day.
Sunday RB had a touched smile that Kiddo woke him up with a good morning hug. We braved our way to ļæ¼RB’s house so GSD could finally meet the kitties.ļæ¼. It... did not go great. GSD was obnoxiously excited and whiny the entire time. The cats hid. On the bright side, GSD was curious, but not predatoryļæ¼, which gives me hope.ļæ¼ When he got a little too nosy one of the cats took a swipe at his nose and he backed off rather than get angry. He did however yip a bark at both the cats, asserting his dominance. Mayhaps after being scratched he no longer found the cats so curious.ļæ¼ GSD did love RB’s fenced backyard though. It’s a think only the fourth time in his little German Shepherd life he’s been able to frolic off leash.ļæ¼
There was a happy hint of our future, our blended family, our life in progress this last weekend. As GSD darted through the grass, RB and Iļæ¼ stood in an embrace, staring beyond the field, off into the mountains. RB was able to get some adulting done while Kidfo and I lounged. There was a brief window GSD rested calmlyļæ¼, quietly, while we watched a mini doc on quantum entanglement, which I thought Kiddo was ignoring until she asked about how atomic bombs work.ļæ¼ We nibble on baby carrots, crackers and brie.ļæ¼
GSD went back to being a jerk shortly after that, but it was quite nice for a moment there. šŸ˜†
ļæ¼ everyone was pretty mentally exhausted from my dog’s antics. Unsurprisingly, when we got back to my apartment it was essentially naptime. RB rested while I did some of my own adulting. Kiddo disappeared in her room to draw her submission for a T-shirt design contest. it’s cool to see her eager about the contest with a desire to put effort forth. She shows me her adorable cartoon and explains how she looked up animals that represent peace first. ļæ¼In the past, she was insecure about competitions of any sort. It says something about how her self-esteem has grown.
ļæ¼I whipped up cheeseburgers on Shibata bread for dinner, which were a hit and we had bowls of frozen strawberries drizzled in honey ļæ¼for dessert.ļæ¼. We watched a show and off to bedļæ¼.. happy weekend.

Is Watermelon Juice good for losing weight?
Watermelon is a superfood that could help your audience out or fill up on the fantastic stuff so that you won’t have room to snack on empty calorie foods such as a bag of chips or a handful of candy. It’s low on the glycemic index because of its fiber content, which means it won’t cause a spike in your blood glucose, often from eating imitation and artificial foods full of added sugar.
Watermelon is also great served on its own so that you can satisfy your sweet tooth, keep your calorie count low, and get a healthy dose of nutrients while you’re at it!
Experts explain about the advantages of a one-ingredient detox. Relying on a single food for a quick fix is only a temporary solution that doesn’t address the root cause of any weight loss concerns.
After spending 3-4 days eating only watermelon or ingesting only watermelon juice, you are most likely to flush out any toxins, salts, or excess water in the body. However, as with most fad diets, this isn’t a sustainable way to keep off weight for a long time.
It’s ideal to benefit from this fruit in moderation, such as using a serving for dessert following a balanced meal or as a snack. This allows you to reap the fruit’s benefits while continuing to get essential macro and micronutrients from different areas of your daily diet.
Watermelon Benefits
Watermelon is about 90% water, which makes it useful for staying hydrated in the summer. Also, it can satisfy a sweet tooth with its natural sugars.
Watermelon also comprises antioxidants. These chemicals can help remove molecules called free radicals, or reactive species, from the body. The body produces free radicals through natural processes, such as metabolism. They can also develop through smoking, air pollution, stress, along with other environmental pressures.
If a lot of free radicals stay in the body, oxidative stress may happen. This can lead to cell damage and might lead to many diseases, such as cancer and heart disease.
The body can get rid of some free radicals naturally, but dietary antioxidants support this procedure. Below are a few ways antioxidants and other nutrients in watermelon may help protect someone’s health.
Cancer
The National Cancer Institute (NCI) notice that free radicals can play a part in developing some types of cancer. The oxidative stress they cause can lead to DNA cell damage.
Antioxidants in watermelon is vitamin C that may help to prevent from cancer by combatting free radicals.
Some studies also have linked lycopene intake with a lower chance of prostate cancer.
Hydration
Watermelon is around 90%, making it a healthy snack choice during the hot summer months.
People can eat watermelon Refreshing, as juice, or frozen in slices for a yummy cold Popsicle-style snack.
Water is essential for health. Learn more here about why we need it.
Asthma Prevention
Studies haven’t confirmed that taking vitamin C supplements can help prevent asthma, but a diet full of vitamin C may provide some protection.
In a 2012 study, researchers found that watermelon extract reduced blood pressure in and around the bottoms of middle-aged people with obesity and premature hypertension. It is suggested that L-citrulline and L-arginine are two antioxidants in watermelon that may enhance the arteries’ function.
Lycopene is also an antioxidant in watermelon which protect against heart disease. It might do this by reducing inflammation connected with high-density lipoprotein (HDL) or ā€œgoodā€ cholesterol.
Phytosterols are plant chemicals that may help manage low-density lipoprotein (LDL) or ā€œbadā€ cholesterol. Some guidelines advocate consuming 2 grams of phytosterols each day. 154 grams of watermelon balls provide a small amount, at 3.08 mg.
Reducing LDL cholesterol can help prevent high blood pressure and cardiovascular disease (CVD), but the precise impact of phytosterols on CVD remains unclear.
Skin Care
Watermelon contains Vitamin C, which the body needs to generate collagen. Collagen is one of vital part in cell structure and immune function. Vitamin C also promotes wound healing.
It promote healthy skin, such as reducing the risk of long-term damage.
Brain And Nervous System
Choline is another Antioxidant that happens in watermelon.
It contributes to the following functions and activities:
muscle movement
learning and memory
maintaining the structure of cell membranes
the transmission of nerve impulses
early brain development
One theory suggests that Choline might help slow the development of dementia in Alzheimer’s Disease, but there is not enough evidence to verify this.
Muscle Soreness
Watermelon and watermelon juice may decrease muscle soreness and enhance recovery time following exercise in athletes.
In a 2017 study, athletes drank either half a liter of People who consumed the watermelon drink reported muscle soreness 24-72 hours following the race.
It’s unclear whether Consuming watermelon juice without added L-citrulline would have the same effect.
Metabolic Syndrome
Printed findings are indicating that watermelon can improve features of metabolic syndrome, including obesity and cardiovascular measures. 2 cups of watermelon and low-fat cookies each day for 4 weeks are tested on 33 people with overweight or obesity.
Individuals who ate watermelon reported feeling less hungry and more fulfilled for longer than those who ate the cookies. Also, after 4 weeks, those who ate watermelon had:
Higher levels of antioxidants in their blood
Lower body fat and body mass index (BMI)
Lower systolic blood pressure
Improved waist-to-hip ratio
Those who ate the cookies Had higher levels of oxidative stress concerning the watermelon group. Their blood pressure and body fat are also enhanced.
Watermelon may be a fantastic choice of snack for people with obesity and metabolic syndrome.
Diuretic Properties
Drugs to help their body eliminate excess water and salt. This can be useful for people with kidney problems, high blood pressure, and other conditions.
A 2014 mouse study Concluded that watermelon’s diuretic action might be as effective as that of For individuals with excess fluid. Never stop taking a prescription diuretic without Talking to your health care provider.

If possible, drain the watermelon cubes beforehand by putting them in a colander over a bowl in the refrigerator overnight.
People Also Ask
Which fruit is best for weight loss?
Eating raw fruits is considered more nutritious as the water dilutes the nutrients. On the other hand, fruit juices keep your body hydrated, and the water helps keep you satiated for more.
The main point is that once the body is deprived of certain foods, fruits help fulfill the daily nourishment demands to maintain body metabolism at optimal prices. These are the top 10 best fruits to include in your weight loss diet:
Strawberries
Banana
Avocados
Watermelon
Lemon
Oranges
Tomatoes
Guava
Lime
Grapefruit
Is pineapple and watermelon good for weight loss?
We all know that pineapples are full of vitamin C, but did you realize that pineapples are also full of weight-loss friendly fibers, just like red apples? Lemon is a decent source of fiber, which tends to fill you up and inducing a feeling of satisfaction. This would ultimately lead to less bingeing.
Additionally, pineapple contains an enzyme called bromelain, which has anti-inflammatory properties. This enzyme aids in metabolizing proteins, which help cutting down belly fat.
Does watermelon help you lose belly fat?
Eat a great deal of watermelon cannot help you lose weight. If you eat with a small portion, it’s ok, but it’s not considered a weight-loss food.
Its sugar, especially, does not have some fruit after 3 pm and try to increase protein more, allowing you to lose more because you’ll be fuller and drink at least 2 to 3-liter water. But watermelon alone cannot help you to reduce belly fat.

Types as: useless kitchen implements
Inspired by that Buzzfeed quiz, and with help from this video. Kids, you don’t need a mortar and pestle if you don’t want one. It’s super easy to smash things.
Mortar and Pestle - ESxP
Look, it probably feels great to grind your herbs by hand like an authentic alchemist or whatever. In high school bio we had to use a mortar and pestle on pig liver to extract DNA or something? Some kid ate the piece of liver for five bucks so I honestly forget. But do you need to get this physical with it? And if you do, do you need stone-age equipment? Be creative. Your kitchen is full of heavy things to smash with, probably.
Garlic Press - ISxJ
I’ve owned this - it’s the only one on this list I have. It seems awfully useful, doesn’t it? Garlic is amazing and needed in many dishes. The only problem is that this thing is a bitch to clean and most of the cheaper versions aren’t that good. So again: just use a heavy thing you have already if you need smashed garlic, and if you need little pieces of garlic, either suck it up and mince it like an adult, or spend a little extra money and buy the pre-crushed stuff which is still pretty cheap and saves tons of time and lasts pretty long too.
Spiralizer - ENxP
The current unitasker (to quote Alton Brown) of note, the spiralizer allows you to see the possibility of noodles where there was once a perfectly good zucchini. Now, I am not opposed to vegetable noodles per se. I mean, I tried them once and they were very not filling, and honestly I’d rather make vegetable noodles and then mix them with regular noodles so that I have a decent dinner, or better yet just dice the zucchini and saute it and put it on spaghetti, but if you can’t eat pasta due to a diet* then fair enough. Just...you know that you could use a peeler and it works about as well? Also fancy stores have those tofu-based noodles, which are vile, or even pre-cut veggie noodles. Let them blow cash on the spiralizer.
Spoon Rest - ExFJ
It can be so cute! Shaped like a dinosaur or something! And it’s here to help! But here’s the thing: entirely unnecessary. Presumably you’ll eat your food in a bowl or a plate so just take out that bowl or plate and stick your spoon on that and not only will it support your spoon adequately, it also catches any sauce drips and costs no additional money. MoMA has a modern, metallic spoon rest that costs $30. I could feed myself for a week on that if I had to, and buy a pretty amazing dinner if I did not have to. Oh also if you clean your counters regularly and you live alone and you’re not cooking something that stains too easily, you could just stick your spoon on the counter and clean up afterwards. I’m not saying it’s the best option but I’ve definitely done this and gotten my full deposit back.
Food Savers - INxJ
You know, either those weird plastic cases shaped like a tomato so you can put your tomato in a tomato, or those stretchy food condoms you can use to cover the sliced half. Now, I have looked at those in the past with some longing, because they are cute and I do sometimes find myself with half an onion leftover or whatever. HOWEVER: foil and saran wrap or leftover bags or a tupperware work just as well, or you could also finish dicing the onion and freeze it, or just add another half of an onion into the dish. I know you want to be able to return to the fruit in the future but here’s the thing: entropy is inevitable and you have only stalled it briefly and you could have done the same thing without extra money spent.
Very Specific Slicer Things - IxFP
Cheating a little on this because I grew up in a house with an apple corer and I think that was pretty useful in that it allowed kids to cut apples , though personally I dislike raw apples so I’ve never owned one. But you do not need an avocado slicer, strawberry slicer, and egg slicer. Yes, you can use them to slice other stuff, sometimes, but only the stuff that is vaguely the same shape. You know what slices all kinds of things? A knife. Gonad the hell up and learn to cut a bagel without cutting your finger. If I can cut a bagel with a plastic knife immediately after a 5K, you can figure it out.
Meat Shredder - ExTJ
It seems efficient because let’s face it, shredding meat with your hands is kind of gross and forks aren’t the most effective tools. But these probably aren’t either, and we get that you want to look like you have spiked knife knuckles but is that really your goal? No, your goal here is shredded chicken for your tacos. Again, you can buy pre-shredded stuff probably, or just buy bigger serving forks. Or stew the meat longer so it’s softer. Your patience and frugality will be rewarded.
The whole weird egg tube situation aka the Rollie - IxTP
I feel as though the introductory video covered most of the issues but if you want a more profane, non-video version, please review this by Deadspin’s weird food column that I really loved before it kind of faded away. This is a perfect example ofĀ ā€˜science gone too far’ though really it’s engineering gone too far. See, I know some weird kitchen devices seem useful but are helpful if you have motor skill issues (specifically the specific slicer devices. Everything else on this list has an equally user-friendly alternative; I deliberately left off things like electric can openers because those do require a certain level of strength and ability to turn stuff, though if you are able-bodied enough to use a non-electric can opener you should, so that you can eat beans and tuna during the apocalypse). This is not a help to anyone except weirdos who want a hardboiled egg tube of sadness. Kitchen space is precious. Dignity is priceless.Ā

7 Best Sources of Skin Friendly Antioxidants
Skincare Tips from MDSUN Skin CareĀ®
Tumblr media
When considering your skincare routine, you may not have given much thought to sources of antioxidants. You should. Taking care of your skin involves more than twice-daily cleansing and moisturizing. In fact, what you put into your body has a huge impact on not only your skin but the rest of your bodily systems, as well.
What Are Free Radicals?
Tumblr media
Free radicals travel through your body causing harm, destruction and lots of damage- like tearing apart the collagen matrix that helps your skin maintain its integrity and strength. They are formed as a result of some of the body’s metabolic functions. For example, the liver produces and uses free radicals to detoxify the body, and white blood cells send free radicals in to destroy bacteria, viruses, and damaged cells. It’s once their work is done that they become hoodlums. Free radicals also come from external sources like environmental pollutants and toxins, smoking, and alcohol consumption.
The process of free radical formation is called oxidation. If you’ve watched an apple turn brown or iron rust, you’ve witnessed oxidation in action.
In simple terms, a free radical is an oxygen molecule that is missing an electron. What makes it so ā€œdangerousā€ is that it goes careening around the body seeking out another atom to bond with. In its search, the free radical goes rudely elbowing its way around, causing damage in its frantic search for a partner.
What do Antioxidants Do?

The roaming free radical can be neutralized with the help of antioxidants, and can sometimes be prevented from forming in the first place. Antioxidants help to counteract the deterioration of food products, but they also remove potentially damaging oxidizing agents from a living organism.
Poor nutrition, exposure to toxins, or other factors can lead to lower levels of antioxidants in the body than free radicals, which is when oxidation wreaks havoc in the body. The result is accelerated aging, damaged or mutated cells, broken-down tissue, the activation of harmful genes within our DNA, and an overloaded immune system.
Our lifestyle of processed foods, reliance on medications, and high exposure to chemicals or environmental pollutants seems to tip the balance towards more free radicals than antioxidants. As a result, we need to pay attention to the foods we eat, focusing on those that provide a huge boost in antioxidants.
Here are the top seven providers of powerful antioxidants that especially serve to protect and renew your skin.
1. Green Tea
The potent catechin polyphenols in green tea reduce the development of some signs of aging, clearing cell damage and repairing wrinkles, blemishes, or other impurities. One cup of the stuff has greater antioxidant effects than a serving of broccoli, spinach, carrots, or strawberries. The taste is slightly bitter, especially if not brewed properly.
Bring a kettle to boil
Let it stand for 5 minutes
Pour over tea bag
Steep for 3 minutes before removing the teabag
Still not a fan of the flavor? Try it iced as a base for your smoothie or green drink, or apply it topically. A study published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology found women whose skin was treated with green tea extract were more protected from the adverse effects of sunlight exposure.
2. Berries
Tumblr media
Not only do they taste great, but berries are packed with antioxidants to protect your skin from the sun’s effects. ā€œWith ½ cup blueberries, you can just about double the number of antioxidants most Americans get in one day. If you want to slow down the free radical aging process, blueberries are the leader of the pack,ā€ says Ronald Prior, Ph.D., head of the USDA Phytochemical Laboratory at Tufts.
Strawberries are a great source of Vitamin C, which your body doesn’t have the ability to store for later, so you must consume it regularly. Vitamin C is particularly effective in diminishing the look of fine lines, wrinkles, dullness, and uneven skin tone. It’s considered an anti-aging superstar for all skin types.
Cranberries are another that are high in antioxidants, plus they have flavonoids that help to increase the antioxidant activity in the body.
Since berries are one of the highest antioxidant foods available, using them in your refreshing smoothies is a great way to get your daily dose for your skin! The best berries for the job: blueberries, strawberries, cranberries, acai, blackberries, and raspberries.
3. Onions
Onions are rich in quercetin, which protects against wrinkles. Some studies show it may also save the skin from harmful UVB rays. They’re also an excellent source of vitamins A, C, and E, which play a vital role in keeping the skin healthy.
4. Pomegranates
Packed with vitamin C, B5, and antioxidant polyphenols, the odd, tart fruit of pomegranates contains more antioxidants than red wine and green tea. I can keep your skin looking bright and may help to reduce the risk of skin cancer.
5. Whole Grains
Whole grains contain polyphenols and carotenoids that fight the aging process. Brown rice contains polyphenols, powerful compounds that can help to stop the oxidation process. Oats are another great source of antioxidants.
6. Tomatoes
This delicious versatile ingredient happens to be one of nature’s richest sources of lycopene, one of the strongest antioxidants. Be sure to choose only certified organic or spray-free tomatoes, as they are known for being heavily sprayed with pesticides and fungicides — negating the positive effect of the antioxidants!
7. Dark Chocolate
Dark chocolate (not milk chocolate) is high in epicatechin, a type of flavonoid. It’s also rich with polyphenols — even greater than wine and tea. A study reported in the New Scientist showed that eating dark chocolate can increase antioxidant levels (but milk chocolate didn’t). The higher the cacao/cocoa percentage, the more antioxidants!

DNA extraction experiment
DNA is in every cell of every living thing. It is the instructions for how we develop and function, and what dictates our unique characteristics.
All living organisms have DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) in every single cell. People, trees, butterflies, bears, bacteria and more all develop based on instructions provided in their DNA. DNA in humans can differ about 0.1%, meaning all humans share about 99.9% of the same DNA. Our similarity to mice is about 85%, to fruit flies is about 61%, and to bananas is about 60%. Why study DNA? Genetics studies look at how DNA instructs your body to function properly or how to make medicines that affect disease.
Scientists extract DNA from cells using specialized kits, but you can do it at home as well. This experiment outlines how to extract DNA from strawberries using household chemicals. Why strawberries? Each strawberry cell has eight copies of their genome (humans have two), giving them a lot of DNA per cell and making the DNA easier for us to see.
Materials
Rubbing alcohol (to cause the DNA to precipitate out since DNA is not soluble in isopropyl alcohol, especially when the alcohol is ice cold)
Salt (to release the DNA strands by breaking up protein chains that hold nucleic acids together, and to gather and clump the DNA strands, making it easier to see)
Water
Dishwashing liquid (to cause the cells to break, or lyse, so that the DNA is released into solution)
Cheesecloth
Funnel
Tall glass
Three strawberries
Resealable plastic bag
Bamboo skewer or toothpicks
Ā ------------------
Chill the rubbing alcohol in the freezer for later.
Make the extraction liquid: Mix 1/2 teaspoon of salt, 1/3 cup of water and one tablespoon of dishwashing liquid in a glass or small bowl and set aside.
Line the funnel with cheesecloth and place onto the top of the tall drinking glass (alternatively you can put the cheesecloth over the glass as well, you just need to be careful pouring in the strawberry mixture).
Remove and discard the green tops from the strawberries, put the strawberries into a resealable plastic sandwich bag and push out all the extra air. Seal the bag tightly. Squeeze and smash the strawberries for two minutes.
Add three tablespoons of the extraction liquid to the strawberries in the bag. Push out all the extra air and reseal the bag. Squeeze the strawberry mixture with your fingers for one minute.
Pour the strawberry mixture from the bag into the funnel. Let it drip through the cheesecloth and into the tall glass until there is only wet pulp left in the funnel.
Take the funnel and cheesecloth off of the glass and discard.
Tilt the jar and very slowly pour up to ½ cup rubbing alcohol down its side until the alcohol has formed about a one-inch-deep layer on top of the strawberry liquid. (You may not need all the alcohol to form the one-inch layer. Do not let the strawberry liquid and alcohol mix.)
Look in between the strawberry layer and the alcohol layer. The strawberry DNA will appear as gooey clear/white stringy stuff.
Dip the bamboo skewer or toothpick into the glass where the strawberry liquid and alcohol layers meet and then pull up the skewer with real strands of strawberry DNA. A single strand of DNA is extremely small, too small to see with the naked eye, but because the DNA clumps together, you can see how much of it three strawberries have when all of their octoploid cells are combined. Remember, each strawberry has a lot of cells!
