🌸Bali🌺 2/3 —- —- —- Nanang was a great teacher 🙏🏼 but every lesson comes with failures and I certainly got to know the sea pretty well as I attempted #surfing for the first time! —- —- The determination to GET UP on that board and ride the wave was stronger than I thought it could be and I have a new-found respect and admiration for surfers - It is a lot harder than it looks! But soooo so rewarding too. I was incredibly proud of myself for managing to stand up not once, but THREE times during this two-hour lesson 😁 and while I was in the sea, tilting my board above the waves, paddling furiously against the current, heaving myself up onto the board, falling off, trying again, then pushing myself up from the board and attempting to stand despite the fast waters, I couldn’t help but be the #poet I am and make the obvious life comparison...I am learning in so many different ways the art of failing gracefully, publicly, shamelessly, and continuously. It’s all growth. It’s all part of the journey to success. It’s tough and it takes grit and continued determination and it costs more than a few bruises(!) but boooyyy does it feel damn good when we do just GET. YOURSELF. UP! 🏄🏻‍♀️💃🏻 —- —- Thanks for coming to my TEDtalk. Dare to be brilliant 💛 —- —- —- #bali #surfing #lessons #growth #journey #attemptingadulthood #attemptingartistry #attemptingsurfing #acceptance #failgracefully #failoften #fail #success #joy #achievement (en Kuta Beach, Bali) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bp9RJxHBK7a/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=ug29nxjlo3yz

🎡Gurlllll don’t get me started. I have failed and failed and failed. But what I love about each failure is I continue to get up and do something bigger and better because I learned from my failures! . 💕My favorite thing is when people who have never raised a child give you advice on how to raise a child! Can I get an amen??? 🙌 . 🏄🏼‍♀️ Especially those sweet souls who try to tell you how to raise a child with so many disabilities. THEY. HAVE. NO. CLUE. 😂😂😂 . 👛 Now, I will tell you that mamas come in every color, shape, age, everything! It doesn’t matter if you birth them yourself, or someone else did it for you! If you are a mama actually raising babies you know what I’m talking about! We fail often! . 🌸 If the mom guilt wasn’t real than everyone wouldn’t be talking about mom guilt! So I’m here to encourage you today that if you are someone who is raising your child, or someone else’s child, or like me having to be a single mom for the last 20+ years, I would encourage you and tell you yes you will fail! I know I know why am I saying that over and over again? Because you will, and so will I ! . 🎟Do your best! Get up every day! Give as many hugs and kisses as you possibly can! Go out there and make something great of yourself! Show your darlings what it looks like for someone to fail and to continue to get up! . #failoften https://www.instagram.com/p/By7vHtxnHxb/?igshid=h0bjujzqfje2

The Journal Journey Part 63
Once I reviewed the many journal entries of this particular day back in 2017 (forgive me, forgot to jot down what day exactly), I could have titled this fear.  That seems to be the reoccurring theme throughout these.  There are some interesting ones, that go quite away back. Hope you enjoy this ride and it provides many things to ponder.
Gary Vaynerchuk - “It is tough when you have no one else to blame.” – This could have been more about accountability, but I can pull out fear as well.  When we have others to blame, we don’t have to worry about being responsible, we get to pass that to others.  That can take away the fear of any failure that may set in because we sidestepped accountability.  Making mistakes sucks and failure can be scary, depending on how severe it is, but it also can be scary if we’ve never been conditioned to face it.  When we pass the buck, so to speak, or others do it for us, we are not able to develop that thick skin.  We become entitled to believe we can do nothing wrong.  And when that moment comes in our life where we must face that failure, we crumble because we have no one to point the finger at. It is important to build our callouses early on in life.  Fail now, fail fast, and keep lifting yourself up.  Take that accountability, own your screw ups, and move on.
Will Smith - “At the point of maximum danger is when you feel minimum fear” – I forget what podcast this was from, but the Fresh Prince was using skydiving as a metaphor here explaining that precise moment when the cord is pulled and the shoot is open, we are not feeling much fear, but it may likely be the most dangerous time.  How often do we experience the opposite, when we are in a situation of minimum danger and experiencing the most amount of fear? Most times when we are afraid of something we are building up this particular story in our mind that never comes to fruition.  Hell, most of the troubles we think about never happen (foreshadowing…😊).  I can think of a few circumstances where I was in a high level of danger, car accidents, races, ultra-endurance events and fear wasn’t something that was running through my mind at that time.  In reality, it was focused on moving forward and the task at hand.  Adrenaline kicking in, our survival instincts, whatever it was within my mind, fear wasn’t part of it. Interestingly though, after these events occurred and reflecting on them, that is when fear appeared (least dangerous moment), but that was quickly overcome by gratitude.  Mr. Smith is on to something here.  He went on with another great one, “God has placed the best things in life on the other side of what we perceive to be terror.”  He uses terror, we’ve talked about “comfort zone.” I guess terror gives it a bigger appeal. It relates the quote above to a degree, when we go through our journey and take the easy way, are we truly hardening ourselves? Preparing ourselves for that incredibly difficult life?  Or, when we do tackle the terrors are we getting ready for a life of ease later down the road?
Seneca - “Set aside a certain number of days, during which you shall be content with the scantiest and cheapest fare, with coarse and rough dress, saying to yourself the while, ‘is this the condition that I feared?’” – The times we live in make things easy.  We have an app for everything, heated/cooled seats in our cars, even steering wheels, and God forbid if we get out of our car to walk into the coffee shop for our drink. Yeah, I know, great benefits but have these luxuries caused us to become soft?  Easy life now means harder life down the road!  Is it still possibly to live a minimalistic life?  Yes, absolutely.  It is simple to do, but difficult in the times we live in.  There are times we’ve done it, moments, as brief as they were, but we revert to our conditioning.  I think that is the point in which Seneca is trying to make.  To keep us on the right course we should test ourselves for periods of time over certain stretches to really challenge ourselves.  Once again, outside the comfort zone, get on the other side of terror.  We are not saying go up to the mountains and live like a hermit off the land for three years.  But maybe get rid of some of the luxuries that are constantly in our face and that make our lives easier for short periods of time.  Challenge ourselves more.  I believe we will be surprised on what we can handle.
Mark Twain - “I am an old man and have known a great many troubles, but most of them never happened.” – Told you we would hit on this one above.  How many troubles have we all really had that we thought we would have?  For most of us, the difficult, dramatic, tragic things we think we will need to face that we fill our minds with, never come to pass.  Most of the terror we face are those stories that we create.  Those thoughts likely scare the crap out of us more that if we had to experience in real life.  Why do we do this to ourselves? Yeah, we are conditioned in a way, but it wastes our mindfulness and better thinking.  I don’t think we can control our thoughts, so I am not sure there is a way to make this go away, but I do believe having awareness of it is a great start.  Also, how do we react when we have these “troubled” thoughts? Do we cave into them or do just keep moving forward and let them pass?
Ralph Waldo Emerson - “What we fear doing most is usually what we most need to do.” – I’ve found myself lately saying, “what the hell, do it any way.” Got that quote from Jack Canfield.  During these times, I am not thinking about the fear but if I boiled it down, I was likely afraid of something that was making me hesitate on doing it.  But I did it anyway; keep moving forward.  The right thing to do is always the right thing to do and as we contemplate that action, the more scared we are of doing it, is likely why we should do it.  Taking that risk, facing that “terror,” and going beyond your comfort zone is only going to provide opportunities to learn and grow.  And in the end, most of the times, we end up finding out we really had nothing to be afraid of.
We will end it with these last two.  No more needs to be said and I believe these tie this journey all together.
Henry David Thoreau - “A man is rich in proportion to the number of things he can afford to let alone.” -
Tim Ferriss - “Suffer a little regularly and you often cease to suffer.”
