Step 3.Run up to the hardware store or supply house and buy a flapper that looks like yours. STEP 4.Reverse steps install new flapper,turn on water.leave about a half inch of slack in the chain when you install the new one. These tanks are in every restaurant, Gas Station, or name it, if they have Soda Fountain Machines they are using Carbon Dioxide. Although those fizzy drinks are a tasty treat proper installation and maintenance is needed to prevent problems. You know how some time you will get a soda at McDonald's and it will taste flat, or worst acidic and metalic, thats why its important to plumbing because we install special Backflow Preventers on Soda machine. You see they have pumps, which can create a situation for both back siphonage and back pressure. The machines work by mixing flavored syrup with carbonated water to make soda. The carbonated water is made by taking regular tap water and adding carbon dioxide (CO₂) gas creating carbonic acid. Without the carbonation fizz, it is no different than flavored syrup. When CO₂ is mixed with water, carbonic acid (a weak acid) is formed. Many water supply lines are made from copper. If CO₂ backs up into a copper water line, carbonic acid will dissolve some of the copper.  The water containing the dissolved copper will eventually be used in dispensing soft drinks and the first few customers receiving the drinks are likely to suffer with the symptoms of copper poisoning. Symptoms of copper poisoning by ingestion include vomiting and gastrointestinal distress. Prolonged exposure can lead to Wilsons disease. There are a lot of homes in Prince William and Fairfax Counties that have CPVC piping. There is a very real and kind of scary thing that is similar to the Poybutlyene (Qest) problems 25 years ago. When CPVC pipes are first manufactured they are highly ductile. You can hit them with a hammer or bend them and they will not break. However, after a short time in service they can become brittle and break like glass - why??? CPVC is tough because it consist of long CPVC molecules which are entangled with each other like spaghetti noodles. However, the pipes lose their strength if the molecules become disentangled from each other. The water pressure inside the pipes are trying to pull the molecules apart but the molecules are locked in place because the pipes are rigid. Exposure of the pipes to certain chemicals cause the CPVC to soften. When this happens, the molecules are no longer locked in place and they start to disentangle from each other causing the pipes to become brittle. Since most hydrocarbon chemicals will absorb into and soften CPVC and there are hydrocarbon chemicals everywhere, it is no wonder why there are so many brittle failures of CPVC piping! The real area to focus on is near the Water Heater, if you think about it these pipes are expanding and contracting all day every day from different temperature changes.you need to be at least 18".
