“To cry is to be human. And I did not want to be human that year.” - Anh V.
I created a collection for LA Fashion Week that was held at Ace Gallery in 2011. All the models cried beautiful tears for me. The tears I could not cry for myself during the year my father abducted my brother and I. The collection was called From Water To Ice by Anh Volcek. Since then, I have taken my grandmother’s name Vu. I feel her watching over me and watching me grow into being human again.

Commendable Reform Efforts of Korea
Tumblr media
Korea Independence at Seodaemun
Nam Ja-Hyun: The Female Warrior of Korea’s Independence
“To live or to die, it matters in the spirit”.
- Nam Ja Hyun
Nam Ja-Hyun is an anti-Japanese activist during the Japanese colonial period. This quote represented her attitude towards Korea’s independence and individual sacrifice. Learning about the history of Korea allowed me to understand the Nam Ja-Hyun’s story, her willpower and her predicament.
Nam Ja-hyun (1872-1993) was a female militant and anti-Japan activist. She was also a Christian who advocated women’s autonomy and human rights of Korea. (2) Nam was motivated by her husband’s will (her husband was a volunteer soldier in a justice army against the Japanese as a volunteer soldier) and became a participant of the Korea Independence Movement.
Nam was actively involved in assassination plans, but failed to execute the murders. She then campaigned and appealed for the country’s independence and human rights in Manchuria. She also united scattered independence movement groups. (1) Importantly, she lead the movement for the release of the Independence Movement fighters. Nam was imprisoned at the Japanese Consulate after 14 years of solicitation. Finally, in August 1933, she went on a 15-day hunger strike and passed away in prison after receiving 6 months of prison torture.
I was relieved to hear that a film, Assasination (2015) was motivated by Nam Ja-hyun.
youtube
The Movie Trailer of “Assassination” (2015)
The “adaptation” of the figure Nam Ja-hyun would ignite the world’s interest in Korea’s history, in particular the Koreans. Furthermore, I am moved by Nam’s perseverances and support for her fellow activists and her country . With that, I hope that her sacrifice would not be disregarded by the future generations.
The Spark of Gwangju Independent Student Movement
Tumblr media
The Emblem of the Gwangju Student Indepence Movement
The Gwangju Student Independent Movement begun in October 30, 1929 by a trivial conflict between Japanese and Korean female students in Nanju Station, Jeollanm-do. (3) This sparked the dismay and dissatisfaction between both parties, as various high schools in Gwangju initiated the anti-Japanese demonstrations . However, this movement did not represent the bickering of youthful teenagers. It followed after the Korean Independence Movement, which was held in March 1, 1919; and also the uprising of Korean citizens, where factory workers, farmers and students demand for Korea’s self determination, democracy and human rights. (4) The Gwangju Student Independence Movement was associated with the anti-Japanese uprising, as Japanese police provoked nationalist sentiment of Gwangju’s citizens by being unilaterally oppressive towards Korean students. (3)
Tumblr media
Cheonan Independence Hall: A Statement Supporting the Gwangju Student Independence Movement.
Following that student uprising, Korean students were forced to sing go the Japanese National Anthem on the National Foundation Day of Korea on November 3, 1929. Yet they began to rebel, either remaining silent or shouting for Korea’s independence. This officially marked the beginning of the first Gwangju Student Independence Movement, as students gave rise to student movements in opposition to Japanese occupation and control.
The Gwangju Student Independence Movement persisted for 5 months, and became a countrywide anti-Japanese movement. More than 54,000 students from 149 schools, including four specialized schools took part in Korea’s reform and demonstration struggle. The Gwangju Student Movement had 1642 people arrested, 582 expelled and 2,230 subjected to suspensions. (4)
Philip Jaisohn, Truth and Sacrifices
It was an honor to be able to meet a family member of Seo Jai-pil (Phillip Jaisoh), to hear of a historical figure with intimate details. However, it is heartbreaking to hear that such a figure became the taboo of his family. Quoted from his family, “So our family had suffered because of him; we don’t need to curry his special flavor from the government using his influence”.
Tumblr media
Seo lost his entire family due to the failure of the coup d’etat (Kap Shin Jung Byun) in 1884. The Kap Shin Coup attempted to overthrow the Manchu Rulers of Imperial China who ruled over the Korean Government. (5) With that, he took refuge in the United States and started with a new identity, Philip Jaisohn. He trained himself as a medical officer in the United States Army. Nevertheless, he never forgot about Korea. He went back to Korea in 1895 to 1989 as chief adviser of the Joseon government. He made several contributions to the Korean civilization, including The Independence (the first daily newspaper published in Korean Hangeul alphabets), built the Independence Arch. He also gave weekly classes to the Koreans on democracy, world history, public infrastructure, public health and hygiene, science and other significant issues such as women’s equality in Pai Chai Academy. (6) He also started other reform programs to foster and motivate fellow Koreans to move towards modernization and Korea’s independence. When he returned to the United States, he founded the League of Friends of Korea in January 11, 1920.(5)   Rather than in awe, Seo’s life story, his contributions, and his family’s reaction caught me off-guard. With two identities, Philip Jaison never once neglected his originality and constantly seek ways to help his country improve and modernize. For which, his personal sacrifice and patriotism reflects how he can be claimed as the “father of modern Korea”, as he place the country before himself.
Concluding Thoughts
From the three story “highlights”, Korea’s Self Determination, Democracy and Human Rights did not come easy. It is the determination and persistences of the people that brought about the liberty and autonomy of the country. For this reason, I believe it is necessary to study and understand history, in particular positive history; as we need to soar through inspiring thoughts and stories and and gain moral energy and meaning to their own lives.
