So one of the fabulous fellows from the 33rd has provided this excellent answer - every day’s a school day!

When British General Cornwallis invaded Virginia, an estimated 30,000 Enslaved Peoples ran away from their masters to seek refuge with the British Army. It soon became clear to Cornwallis that the thousands of African-American men, women and children placed an immediate burden on his army. The runaway enslaved people drained the resources of the British Army, hindered their troop movements and compromised the security of their encampments. In an attempt to restore order to his army, Cornwallis placed restrictions on the number of servants to be employed by his officers, allowing "five horses and two Negroes" to colonels and majors and “three horses and one Negro" for captains. Surgeons, lieutenants and sergeant-majors were permitted one African-American servant. To distinguish those who were permitted to follow the army as paid servants, Cornwallis issued the following decree in on May 21, 1781: "The number or names of the Corps to be marked in a Conspicuous manner on the jacket of each Negro....all Negros who are not marked agreeable to the Orders repeated at Petersburg will be taken up and sent away from the Army." While this may have seemed like a good solution to the problem of runaways, the British Army continued to suffer from logistical and supply problems from the runaway enslaved peoples who flocked to his army in hopes of freedom. After the British Army's surrender in October 1781, many of the Enslaved Peoples were returned to their masters. For our reproduction coat we chose to interpret the decree by marking our coat with "33 REG'T" representing the 33rd Regiment of Foot. Question for you; I recently visited the siege museum in Yorktown and saw what was supposed to be a replica of a freed slave uniform belonging to the 33rd Regiment. I was wondering if you’d seen anything like it in the actual historical record? Its the one on the left.

Well this is certainly intriguing! That looks like a fairly average recreation of a British regular’s waistcoat with sleeves added, but the 33rd stamp is very incongruous. I’ve never seen that before, and I’ve never heard of a freed slave in the regular’s ranks, so it’s very interesting. Don’t suppose you also have a photo of the plaque describing it? I’m going to ask the folks in the 33rd reenacting group.
