heels had been lined up among the floor - duri had disregarded any ideas of flat shoes when he got paired up with jaeyeol to style the other. he wanted to go with something that was a bit out of the box for a male presenting idea, wanting to go to a bit of an extreme - something that was high fashion of sorts. plus, jaeyeol would make the heels work with their rather long legs and that’s what duri had in mind when he had picked the heels out to go along with the concept. to say the least, duri was rather excited about the shoe idea that he managed to pick out when he thought up of a concept, and based the whole idea around the simple thing. duri had also been excited because one of the set items would have jaeyeol draped over a motorcycle in heels, as well. city scenery would also do a lot of work for the shoot, as well as having jaeyeol on the hood of a vintage car. duri was just very much excited.

he had picked out numerous different outfits that he thought would suit jaeyeol - even a few latex, but that was a bit ambitious and he wasn’t sure if those would end up making the cut. but, simply, he had a lot upon the racks that he thought would go well with the shoot. he went through them once again, fingers combing through to make sure he placed everything with what they matched with, and everything of that such. he kept a lot of the advice on fashion that yena had given him, and truth be told - he thinks that’s what has really set him over the top for the styling of this one. 

just as he had finished making sure everything was prepared, duri hears footsteps, and jaeyeol approaching. he giggles happily before moving to them, giving one of his bear hugs. “jaeyeol!” he says, a bit excitingly, before stepping back. “i’m really glad we got paired up together, i’m really excited about this!” he said, before moving to the side. “ta-da! i have a bunch of stuff picked out for the concept and i have to apologize now, i hope you can work in heels. if i have to carry you around the set, i’ll be sure to do it!”

AHN SANGWOOK — AESTHETIC #1 & SELF-PARA #1 (BASE X EXCLUSIVE: GROUP PICTORIAL)

to his dismay, polaris gets the short end of the stick in his not-so-humble opinion and has to work on a simple basketball fashion concept for the magazine pictorial. alex is more worried about how this will affect his relationship with the sport since they'll have to spend the day pretending to play, and while in there he has a very egocentric monologue about the things he does out of obligation and the things he does for pleasure. nothing much changes in the end, because his passion for the sport might seem frail but it's stronger than most of his interpersonal relationships at this point.

alex thinks this is the most basic they could ever go for a photoshoot, and part of him is annoyed. polaris, with their thunderous popularity and millions of followers settling with something as simple as a basketball fashion concept of all of the things. it was slightly frustrating for the guy who became so used to being dressed in fancy clothes and sport a more refined concept.

luckily for him and for whoever had this genius idea, alex can wear anything and still look amazing in it. no one would have a hard time picking nice pictures if he’s in it. it’s the promise he can offer.

alex started playing basketball when he was a teenager, and he easily turned out to like the sport quite a bit as time passed by. he was already naturally lean and agile, he occasionally liked to run, and it was very good for him to have something other than practices to focus on. he didn’t have much time to do anything else, but whenever he got the chance, basketball was his bliss. even now, after debuting and becoming worldwide famous, alex still got some time to separate his dreadful work from the simpler times of shooting a ball in a loop.

because this is alex, and he knows himself, upon realizing what kind of thing they were going to be put through, he felt upset. not only because it felt so ordinary compared to what polaris had done in the past, but because this whole photoshoot thing stood very close to the line of his obligations and his joy. now that he’s experiencing this, things couldn’t be more different.

alex has been in photoshoots before, of course. he has an actor’s face and the structure of a model, and dimensions isn’t stupid to not take advantage of that when they can in group shots. taking pictures is an endless game of doing what the photographer tells him to and try his hardest to not look bored or like he’s spacing out unless it’s asked of him. chin up, head cocked, finger near his face, all that sort of thing. this is the same thing.

“try to look laid back, lean your head back and pretend you just scored big, whip the inexistent sweat dripping from your forehead.” it’s about the clothes they are using as much as how hot they can manage them to look, and in alex's case, it’s not that’s not a difficult job.

when it’s all said and done, when they are packing their stuff to leave, he even manages to score a couple of points, and his conscience is clear that at least this wasn’t ruined by the demands of his job.

— aesthetic 006: famed base magazine solo pictorial

yena went with a heavily y2k retro school girl inspired look, complete with checkered patterns, tennis skirts, pigtails, sweatervests, headbands knee high socks and all the cliché’s that come with the trope. as her biggest inspirations, yena cites the movie clueless and olivia rodrigo’s sour album (ooc, sunmi’s noir/you can’t sit with us and purple kiss’ zombie also lightly inspired this though that’s not canon). the photoshoot itself is meant to mimic a school notebook, with a paper background filled with silly doodles, stickers and little writing and the pictures of yena layered over top a cutout of a magazine, completing that heavily romanticized american high school look that’s all the rage currently.

styling’s not so hard when she’s subjected to a line of clothes — pieces borrowed and taken from the releases of this season. a new line of muted beiges, and ivory blends leads her fingers to graze upon each piece, eyes holding onto the small details of the pieces. 

her eyes rove over back to her model of the day, haru. “you’re going to have base makeup today — nothing fancy, nor a touch of a smokey eye.” minjung begins, her voice courteous as she relays the sentiments one by one to the makeup staff bustling in the background. “clothing wise, i’m going to dress you like i dress myself everyday. there’s something wonderful about a nice pair of beige slacks — especially when they look like they’re ballooning from your legs.”

it’s an ode to her favorite: pheobe philo as her fingers rummage through the beiges, plucking out one pair of pants and an oversized white button-up. she hands it over to the younger idol, her eyes glazing over, a gummy smile painting still. “you’re lucky, you have legs like a giraffe — i’m willing to put my cards on modeling coming easy to you.”

news outlet exclusive and joint idol multi-media project base are collaborating to release a special one-issue magazine that will highlight idols under bc, dimensions, and gold star. the magazine will not only feature photos and content of all of the idols under all three companies, but they’ll get to stretch their legs creatively as well as some take on the role of fashion editors and creative directors for their own content.

the more cynical have said this is an attempt by the three companies to get on exclusive’s good side, but, for the most part, fans are buzzing with excitement at the news of more content from their favorite idols.

throughout the month of september into early october, idols under all three companies will be participating in schedules for the special magazine.

idols under the three companies have been scheduled for various gigs as a part of the special magazine release. these activities will be scheduled over the course of six weeks from the beginning of september to mid-october.

opportunity one: group pictorial

for the special magazine, the team has recruited top photographers and creative directors that have worked with several of the top fashion magazines in korea to craft pictorial concepts for each group under the three companies. each company will shoot a pictorial for the magazine.

note: for the purposes of this, concept references should not be taken as exact mirrors of the photo shoot. they may be solo or pair shoots while the ones in-’verse are group shoots, but they’re meant to symbolize the wardrobe, feeling, and setting of the photo shoots more than exact photos taken during the shoots.

- what one word or phrase would you use to describe your 2021? - how have you and your group grown this year? - what has been your muse-have fashion item recently? - how would you describe the concept of your solo pictorial and how you came up with it? / (if you do not plan on muse doing a solo pictorial:) how was your group photo shoot? what were your thoughts about it and during it? - talk about your exclusive x base stage performance. / (if you do not plan on muse doing an exclusive x base stage performance) in your opinion, what are your strengths and weaknesses as a person and as a celebrity? - what are you most interested in these days? - what is something you want to do in the future?

- three individualized interview questions created by mun. avoid controversial, confrontational, or private questions. these may be on topics such as their solo work, things related to their image, general questions on interests and hobbies, or expansions on the six standard questions.

opportunity three: solo pictorial

idols will also be given the opportunity to help serve as fashion editors and stylists for their own solo pictorial. while the main team of professionals hired for the magazine will get final say, this is the most creative controls idols have probably had over a pictorial in their careers up to this point. not all idols will have a solo pictorial in the magazine; muses/muns who do not complete both steps of this opportunity will not canonically have one.

please keep in mind the pictorial cannot be controversial, crude/vulgar, image-damaging, etc. and content such as nudity, smoking, etc. would not be allowed. this is meant to “show their creativity”, but idol image is always a limiting factor. the group pictorial references are a good reference for acceptable tone and content.

the budget will allow travel within 2,500 kilometers of seoul for each solo pictorial if the idol desires to shoot on-location somewhere.

opportunity four: exclusive x base stage

exclusive will be releasing a series of ‘exclusive x base stage’ videos to their youtube channel. this will involve performances videos by idols under the companies. examples: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6.

idols will get to have a hand in the creative direction for the stage set up, location, and styling for their stage if they wish, but this is optional. travel for an on-location shoot is possible, but the budget will only allow travel within south korea.

muses who have solo original music claims released already may perform an original song if they choose to do this. it does not have to be a single and also may be an ost they sang. otherwise, muses may do a cover of a song.

for covers, please remember to try to avoid songs that are claimable but have not been claimed yet, though there’s more flexibility with songs that are able to be claimed but are less likely to (ex. more recent releases by veteran ballad artists). some suggestions for covers of non-claimable songs are songs by non-korean industry artists, songs originally by bands or with more than three main artists, songs released prior to december 2009, and canonically released / claimed and released songs.

not all idols will have an exclusive x base stage video; muses/muns who do not complete both steps will not canonically have one.

there will also be another online exclusive video related to the creation of the special magazine.

idols will be paired up and will spend the better part of the day together in a typical photo shoot studio setup. one idol will be asked to direct the styling and the hair and make-up of the other idol to their taste from what’s available to them, and they’ll be able to play around with the studio backdrop, props, lighting, etc. as well. they will then serve as the photographer and take a few pictures of the idol they styled. this is meant to be a light-hearted video series and the concepts aren’t expected to be as serious or professional as the actual solo pictorials. the focus is instead on feeding fans more content and giving unexpected interactions between idols. a video of the process as well as a few of the final photos will be uploaded to exclusive’s website.

idols will be randomly paired, so though anyone can get paired up, for the sake of branching out, this must be completed between two muses who haven’t yet threaded since the restructuring. it’s encouraged this be muses who haven’t interacted much in general before, but that part won’t be enforced.

kim taejin’s a creature of habit.

can’t help it when his eyes read hours ahead of what he’s supposed to be doing in the current moment, and especially can’t help when his eyes remain keen to any familiar names lurking on the list. somehow, he manages to stay lucky when the stylings consist of one name he recognizes, a name he’s friendly with. and today’s course of events are expected to run smoother than usual, an easy run-through of publicized friendships when the roles fall off-screen just as quick as they fall on.

yejun — the name pulls years of half-baked memories, lost through the time when taejin was barely a fresh face in a sea of idols, and yejun the same. the same age, and the facet of sharing the same number of years hold more sentimentality than he’d initially thought — it carries on all the way to present day. 

by the time he’s walking past the doors and into the room, his mind forgoes any of the racks of clothing on the room, leaving it all out for a greeting, hands up. “yejun — i saw you were styling me, and granted, i’m glad to know i’m in the right hands.”

the camera follows her the minute yuna steps into the studio. 

a quick bow, but low enough to be respectful, candy’s go yuna introduces herself clearly. she sets her bag and comically oversized water bottle down on a chair marked with her name, and straightens up, surveying her surroundings. yuna’s aware of everyone’s watching her, the quiet hum of background conversation in the room having dissipated the moment she’d stepped in, and offers them her best and brightest smile.

“are you all tired? it’s early-- are we the first ones today?” nods from the staff. “oh, wow. i’m so sorry,” she chuckles. “um, i think you can relax for a bit. i just texted @fmdxsuji​-unnie-- her car was in traffic 10 minutes ago, but i think she’ll be here soon-ish.” she holds her phone up like she’s a beauty youtuber to show the open kakaotalk conversation, and addresses the cameras. 

“i’m really glad i got paired up with her-- we have a couple mutual friends and we’ve spoken a few times, so at least i’ll be getting styled by someone i know.” good content is having to talk by yourself like you’re carrying on a conversation with the camera, and yuna’s her own best conversationalist. she settles herself in the middle of the set, and starts talking to the camera about related topics like what sort of styling she typically likes and was hoping to try out today to fill the time.

“perhaps i should be thankful that i’m not being put in a bag at least? right?” with her brows furrowed, suji took a look down at her outfit and the way she was styled. this wouldn’t be the first time that she and the rest of the group had been subjected to some wacky styling. that didn’t mean she enjoyed any of it. it’s gotten to the point where she’s stopped talking about it especially since she knows it may upset the people she works with, but she’s always just been a fan of simple clothing. 

clearly, she debuted in the wrong group in that sense. 

with a hum, she took a look at her groupmate’s outfit which wasn’t much different to her’s—purposely, of course, since it seems quite on concept. she chuckled before reaching over to give chiaki a half hug. “how long do you think this shoot will take? a few hours? the whole day?” pursing her lips, she looked over at the concept board. there was never a clear answer when it came to shoots like this.

exclusive x base magazine solo pictorial

for his solo pictorial, ash hopped a plane to hong kong for a shoot inspired by city life, as well as, in part, the works of directors wong kar wai and satoshi kon and photographer wing shya. the shoot took place at night both outdoors on the street and in nearby indoor locations including a bar, a tattoo shop, a restaurant, the subway, and a studio apartment.

      “can i go to venice?”                                             minhee, what part of 2,500km don’t you understand?

so, she doesn’t go to venice for her solo pictorial, but she does go to dailan, china, to shoot at their replica venice. their 2.5 miles of canals and the inside/outside seating areas of a little italian café are the primary photography locations for minhee’s shoot. the general concept is ... girlfriend material. the holiday you’d bring your girlfriend on to propose to her. yes, minhee is fully playing into her image, but she wanted to do something more casual like this anyways, since she is (arguably) the most touchable out of bc’s idols. all of the clothes used are her own, though the ensembles have come through a stylist!

famedbasemagazine - solo pictorial.

character(s) involved: n/a. about: duri does his solo pictorial.  trigger warnings: n/a. notes: honestly just kind of basic because i kept saying i needed to get this done ! when i tell you i thought i wrote more words. anyways this isn’t good <3. word count: 534.

over the years, duri had gotten rather used to modeling. the first solo project he did outside of titan was being a brand ambassador for a year for beanpole, so modeling things off had seemingly become second nature to him. it definitely helped with the baskin-robbins and coca-cola brand ambassadorships - maybe helping a bit in the brand ambassadorship for pasha de cartier (something he was a little unsure about, to say the least. but, that contract had ended.)  nonetheless, he was used to it - especially since it seemed that bc entertainment had made modeling become one of the avenues that duri focuses on. however, he wasn’t complaining, since he found fun in the art. 

however, he was rather excited today because he was modeling something that he had put together himself. truth be told, it was a little odd almost, considering duri isn’t a stylist in anyway. but, he managed to put it together. it was all things that he liked - flowers and sunshine. it was the perfect combination. then he’d be in all white, without a shirt on most of the time. he was probably dubbed something of “sexy garden fairy hunk” or something along those lines. nonetheless, it was something that was very fitting of duri and he was excited.

he’s laying out in the sun, flowers surrounded around him. he listens to posing instructions given to him by the photographer - something that duri follows well. there were a lot of shots taken simply just like that some of the same poses, some that were different. as moves elsewhere, a place that the photographer would get more artsy, peaking at duri through the flowers, where he’d be on his side. a bunch of more photos are taken, before they’d move to the new location. 

he’s dawned in more hair fixes and more makeup fixes, where he’s always leaning down because he was taller - something he was okay with. he just never wanted the stylists to strain themselves for reaching up to the rather tall man. his outfit barely changes through the shoot, just different whites and creams, outfits of the same that allows his torso to be shown off. he was an angel among the flowers, frolicking through the flowers. somehow it managed to match duri, the body, the concept, his personality. duri had really shined himself through this, he thinks. even if the smiles had to be completely in the eyes, you could really just probably tell that he was within his element. 

he’d pose in a lot of different areas, like among the flowers and bushes at a table drinking tea and reading a book, at flowers hanging down, and in a bunch of other places. he thought the shot was a lot of fun and adorable in it’s way, something that really fit him. at the end of the shoot, he’d meet with the photographer and the two would pick out the photos they liked the best. duri was given the reign on this, which made him a bit nervous. but, the photographer agreed with his picks and said that he made the best picks. 

duri felt good. he felt really proud of himself.

- what one word or phrase would you use to describe your 2021?

"personal accomplishments. it’s a big year for andromeda. we just celebrated our two year anniversary and for me that’s something to be proud of. i also released a collab single with candy’s alice earlier this year. it didn’t win any music shows but i’m proud of it." andromeda may not have won any music shows or awards but she was making accomplishments that still mattered to her.

- how have you and your group grown this year?

"i’ve grown as an artist. i’ve had two collabs this year. they’ve helped me explore different concepts outside of andromeda. and andromeda has seen a change in concept. both our comebacks had a different concept."

- what has been your muse-have fashion item recently?

"skirts. i have been wearing more skirts. i just feel like they match autumn.”

- how would you describe the concept of your solo pictorial and how you came up with it? / (if you do not plan on muse doing a solo pictorial:) how was your group photo shoot? what were your thoughts about it and during it?

"i would describe my solo pictorial as a dreamscape. it’s hopefully what you would see if you could walk in a dream. like everyone i have dreams. and it’s nice to be able to visualize that. i’m achieving my dreams. in a way i want others to also chase after their dream."

- talk about your exclusive x base stage performance. / (if you do not plan on muse doing an exclusive x base stage performance) in your opinion, what are your strengths and weaknesses as a person and as a celebrity?

"i performed jiah’s holo. i absolutely adore this song. it has such a positive message. i got to perform it in a garden which i feel really compliments the song. it was a special experience that I will always treasure."

- what are you most interested in these days?

"dramas. i adore watching dramas. and now i finally have more time to watch them. so i’ve been spending most of my free time binging all the dramas i can."

- what is something you want to do in the future?

"i want to tour with my group. i would love to be able to see fans from around the world and be able to perform for them. i would also love to release a solo. i want to be able to explore what works for me. show a different side to my fans."

— what do you want your 2022 to be like?

"happy. i just want to be happy in 2022. no matter what happens i’m going to see the good and try my hardest to be happy. i would like to see my group get a first win. and i want to explore my solo variety work.”

— what friends do you have in the industry?

"i would say one of my closet friends is candy’s alice. i would love to do more collabs with her in the future."

— do you wish to do more solo variety in the future?

"absolutely. i loved filming for battle trip. it makes me want to do more variety. it was fun to be able to travel and talk with the other idols. I hope to have more opportunities in the future."

Bang Daehyun is not the most creative person in the world oddly enough. So when asked to create a concept for his solo pictorial, he struggled at first. It wasn’t until he started going through the costumes and clothing before he came up with the police concept. At some point in their lives, most boys wanted to be a cop or work in the law. If he wasn’t an idol, Daehyun would probably become a cop, paramedic or firefighter. He’s always found joy in helping others and so this seemed like a fitting concept for him.

What one word or phrase would you use to describe your 2021?

❝ It’s hard to pinpoint it in just one word. ❞ He pouted. ❝ I’d probably say: fun! Every year is a new adventure and every year I get to be part of Cloud is like a blessing. I’d say so far the year has been fun and full of excitement. ❞

How have you and your group grown this year?

❝ I’ve grown a lot this year. With every new year, I learn and the things I learn help me evolve as a person and especially as a leader. Cloud as a whole is always growing. We never stop learning and improving. With all the new opportunities being presented to us, we’re excited to see what the future holds! ❞ He grinned brightly.    

What has been your must-have fashion item recently?

❝ Oh, fashion is something I’m never good at! You can ask my members and the fans about this, ❞ he laughed. ❝ I don’t have a must-have fashion item since I just wear the first thing I grab. ❞  

How would you describe the concept of your solo pictorial and how you came up with it?

❝ I’m not the most creative person in the world and so I did struggle at first with the idea of my concept. It wasn’t until I looked through the costumes that the idea hit me. I love helping people and if I wasn’t an idol I would be either a cop, paramedic or firefighter and so I figured why not use that as my concept. That’s where the officer look came from. ❞

Talk about your exclusive x base stage performance.

❝ It’s probably something that no one expected from me. It’s similar to Cloud’s sound but with a twist. It was exciting to practice and I hope the fans enjoy it as much as I did. ❞ He smiled brightly, his eyes shining. 

What are you most interested in these days?

❝ I don’t know really, ❞ he mumbled, trying to think. What was he interested in lately? ❝ I don’t know if there’s one specific thing as I’m always finding new things that interest me. ❞   

What is something you want to do in the future?

❝ I want to see how far Cloud can go. I want to see us renew our contract as a whole group. Other than that, I’m not sure. I mean, I wouldn’t mind trying new things like modeling or acting. Maybe even release a solo or two. ❞

You’re the only Cloud member to not have made any appearances or releases outside of group schedules. How do you feel about this? Do you have any plans to change this?

How did he know this question was coming? Daehyun smiled softly as he answered. ❝ Not making an appearance outside of Cloud schedules was a decision on my part. I didn’t want to make an appearance outside of Cloud schedules as I wanted to work on making sure I was the best version of myself so I can best represent both Cloud and the company. I’m currently working on myself and my personal issues and one day I will appear outside of official schedules. Who knows, it might even be soon. ❞

What has been your favourite concept or era so far? Is there a concept you want to try?

❝ Just Right and Adore U were a lot of fun to do! I think 2018 had to be my favourite year of releases. ❞ He grinned brightly. ❝ As for concepts I’d like to try, I think something more mature or maybe even darker. ❞

What is one piece of advice you’d give to someone who is wanting to enter the industry?

❝ I don’t know if I’m the best person to ask this as advice, ❞ He joked with a chuckle. He then turned serious as this was a serious question. ❝ If your dream is to enter the industry, whether it be by becoming an idol, actor, model or whatever, then I say follow it! It’s not going to be easy and it’s a lot of work but the work is worth it once you get to debut. The biggest thing I want to stress is that this industry is hard and success isn’t always granted. “the concept today is flowers, because our jaein is pretty like a flower.” yena explained to the camera, framing her friend’s face with her hands. the idea had been simple enough, for their little amicable photoshoot to be released online, yena had rounded up every last fake flower she could get her hands on, donning her friend in a simple, flowy white dress with her hair done wildly and tousled, soft, peachy make-up accentuating her features. “she always looks so cool and chic in ultraviolet, like a total girl crush, which why i thought it would be nice to show another side of jaein for todays shoot!” yena adressed the camera yet again before finally turning to her friend again.

“so, what do you think? do you like it?” she asked jaein, broad smile on her face. yena knew her friend’s everday style to be a little cuter and more feminine than ultraviolet’s image would let on, it would be fun to play into that. “the idea is to incorporate the flowers-” picking up a good armful of all sorts of flower props to show off to jaein and the camera. “in fun, creative ways, so you blend in with the flowers!” as she put them back aside, she held one plastic daisy clutched between her fingers, gently tucking the stem behind jaein’s ear. “see! you look stunning already, you’re a natural!”

1. what one word or phrase would you use to describe your 2021?

“van gogh-esque.”

2. how have you and your group grown this year?

“we’ve scaled back on our promotions, but not entirely as fans predict. three to two doesn’t make that much of a difference, you see. we’re seven years in, and well beyond our rookie years — we’re veterans of some sorts or at least that’s how our juniors have addressed us. we’re mature doing bubble gum pink, showing age really doesn’t have that many limitations. suppose another year in the books would also make us closer, wouldn’t it?”

3. what has been your must-have fashion item recently?

“my must have fashion item... i’d say, my dior saddle bag. but that’s kind of too many times said and done. so, i’ll have to go with my vegan biker shorts. biker shorts have been coming around in circles lately, but the vegan leather is becoming a new trend — add in the change of blacks to browns, and you’ll have yourself a stunning fall. stray away from the black and white coloration and add some muted colors, that’s my big advice.”

4. how would you describe the concept of your solo pictorial and how you came up with it? what were your thoughts about it and during it?

“there’s a night crawler in everyone, i’d like to say. usually, people assume the night is when the real self comes out — i took a twist, and said the night is when the persona comes out. it’s a mixture of parts evil, parts coy. the coloration is reminiscent of japan’s city pop — hence why we traveled out to tokyo to do the shoot. i’ve been a fan of city pop, not so much the vibrant pinks and purples. but even if that trend has past, there’s always a resurgence waiting in the future. similarly, the persona changes from time to time, hence how the inspiration spawned. it was fun to visit japan again, and play into the tunes of city pop — that’s a concept equinox hasn’t done, and it was fun for me to live out the fantasies pretending like it was a teaser for something in the future.”

5. talk about your exclusive x base stage performance.

“it was fun — that’s the day time, when the true persona does come out. i got to bring along friends who aren’t that well known, but talented. jam and have fun as if it weren’t a job, but more so just a group of friends seeing each other for the first time in a long time. i got to bring elements that were important to me from my artwork, to my dingy guitar, and my pretty pug pickle. i’d say, it’s true to me, and where i felt like home.”

6. what are you most interested in these days?

“these days — i’m less about art, less sketching less painting. i blame time constraints, but also a new fascination in learning the guitar, and writing more songs. i don’t know why, but the thing about inspiration is that you have to seize it when you can or else it’ll dwindle at your fingertips — so, i’d say make the most out of it, and i have no regrets.”

7. what is something you want to do in the future?

“i’ll be corny. i want to fly to space via space x — maybe someday, space x will sponsor me.”

8. if you could describe yourself as a color, what would it be?

“i say it all the time — gray. but if i’m supposed to become a bit more creative, and love colors, i’d say an olive green. i like the muted earthy tones that doesn’t scream a field of flowers — there’s something mysterious about it, but almost an eerie gentleness. i think that’s why olive green is magical.”

9. what is your favorite concept equinox has done?

“is it vain of me to say psycho? it’s the first title track that i’ve partaken in — the eerie concept there with the classical victorian gothic themes are something we haven’t touched on. the song itself, in my opinion, is a taste of art that evokes a chilling feeling despite how many times you listen to it. it’s timeless, and i’ll make my cake and eat it too.”

10. how does it feel for the public have seen you evolve over the years?

“weird — nobody expects to stand under a microscope as they go through puberty. neither do you expect anyone to remember the embarrassing moments you’ve done in years past. it’s humbling, it’s awkward. it’s irony like the truman show —  still, i can’t change the past and i’m glad that i’m still evolving. so, keep on watching me now.”

aesthetic & self para: solo pictorial (wc: 468)

the concept that hyeju decides for her solo pictorial is on/off. it works as a meta photoshoot where she’s being shot being in the middle of a photoshoot. the shots that are her actual modeling shots come out in black and white and are, oddly, the on shots. meanwhile, the colored shots will be of her backstage or her showing off that she’s in the midst of filming something and those are her off shots. 

hyeju’s had a lot of pictorial opportunities from the beginning of her career. something about her having the right look or aesthetic for it—whatever that was supposed to mean. she thinks it’s their way of telling her that sometimes she’s too expressionless, but she’ll never know for sure. either way, that doesn’t stop her from saying yes because it’s kind of nice to see her in magazines. 

that’s why she doesn’t say no when bc offers up an opportunity for another solo pictorial. only this time, she gets to call the shots.

well, some of them. 

whenever she’s told that she’ll have freedom, she knows it never means a hundred percent freedom. it’s just sweet talk that companies throw at their artists, and she knows the less experienced ones will grab onto it like a fish confronted with bait. she only says yes because they’re low effort opportunities for her to have her face plastered somewhere. some nice proof to her parents that, yes, she is doing well without them. 

the idea she comes up with is on and off. a little cliche perhaps, but she’s always imagined a shoot within a shoot and nothing like those forced candid shots that some companies like to set up for their artists. the dispatch articles where celebrities are supposed to look like they got caught out during an outing are so boring and predictable. she knows for sure that nobody goes out in a face of full makeup on their off days. not when idols are suspected to so much skin damage from the hours and hours they do have to have make up on. 

this one will be a little more natural. or as natural as she can make it. all shoots can never be fully natural. 

“can all the shots we take of me being an actual model come out in black and white? i think i’d like that contrast,” she suggests while flipping through some of the shots that have been taken. the director gives her a hum of agreement before flipping to some of the shots that are supposed to look candid. it’s not completely natural, but there’s a few shots in there that do look like they were taken by complete accident. she gives them the okay on those and goes to the dressing room to get into her next fit. 

the camera follows her in there too because of the concept, and she whips the curtain in the direction. it’s all meant to look like playful banter.

“that was a really good shot, hyeju,” the direction mentions and she gives him a thumbs up before she really does push the camera out because she has to change. while the idea came out quite quickly, she thinks the shoot will end up looking just fine.
