Fandom Problem #4438:

Finally getting around to watching that thing everyone's been talking about, and being surprised by the fact that a character that they had made SEEM like they were a major important character, with the amount of art and fics and discourse about them...is actually barely in it at all?

And it's not even like they play a particularly important role, or even have any particularly memorable moments. Editing them completely out wouldn't change the story in any way at all. And you don't get what the big deal was to begin with.

Shiro can't believe that he's been gone from them for two months. What little sleep Shiro gets between fights is filled with nightmares - Pidge coughs, Hunk and Lance scream, Keith's strangled voice begs, Please, please, don't hurt them - Shiro would give anything to be trapped on that Galra ship instead of them.

4438 Response to an ask: Jfc, this hurts so deeply to read. My trans friend was harassed off tumblr simply because they wrote fic of a canon character and interpreted them as cishet. They had wrote them for over a decade (which is insanely impressive to me!), but then some asshole with a huge performative axe to grind popped into the picture. They saw the character as trans, but there was no canon basis for it, and there was no plausible reason other people would see the same. In fact, most people from what I've seen actually interpret the character as cishet, even trans people! But that person saw my friend's work and said they had to tear up all ten years of worldbuilding, dev, and storytelling to make the character trans, actually. Or else they were a transphobe, and a transmisogynist. Revising all of this work would've changed, effectively, the entire character take and their history, and I do not blame my friend for jumping ship and leaving the site. Especially after the "Lol Funny" casual death wishes that were thrown at them as Entertainment fodder for the harasser's followers (who were equally disturbed). Fucking nightmare!

If you're going to make a drastic change to a characters race/sex/gender/sexuality but it either doesn't effect the story or the character at all, or makes zero sense in a canon context and you didn't switch things to an AU where it would make sense, it's either pointless window dressing or performative inclusivity.

If you're going to make Ned Stark trans, commit to the bit that you have to rewrite the entire series.
