Ever since I could remember I wanted to be a model. I was told, "Models have grace, and you don't" I never really understood what that meant. Anyone could have grace. What they were actually talking about is the grace of a thin body. A fat body could never pose in the graceful way a thin body could, could never walk the way a thin body could. A fat body just isn't as "good" as a thin body. I looked at all fashion magazines. None of the people in these magazines had bodies like mine. This taught me my body was wrong. That I was not worthy of looking good; that I should be unnoticeable. Fast forward to now, whenever I do pick up a fashion magazine, I see my body in those pages. Not many, but a few. I see these beautiful plus size models rocking bikinis and tight outfits. Being so visible in all their glory, fatness and grace. I wish my 10 year old self got to see these fat models of today. It could have saved me so many years of hating myself for not looking like what I thought I model had to be. And one day my fat a$$ will be in a fashion magazines showing other little girls that their bodies are perfect they way they are 💜 Mark my words. I want to ask the world to have a big imagination for me. I want to ask you to believe me the first time when I’ve named harm. I am asking you to pause with intention for those with dark skin. Not the intention of slave master and mistress or of his children, but with the intention that you pour into your beige babies. Bring me your Beyoncé energy. Allow me to be full and complete. Allow me to exist outside of the space of nourishing and educating y’all to life and myself to an early grave. Love me for the mundane. Stay for my creative genius. Like this post just as much as y’all like a post where I’m holding someone accountable for wrongdoing. Y’all only believe I am important as long as I am enraged. My rage is valid. But it’s one small part of me. I keep asking to be seen in my whole humanity. I keep asking to be seen as a model. As an entertainer. As a speaker.
