Oh hehe *twirls nonexistent hair* ty <333 tho thinking Im fast is giving me too much credit bc I coulda sworn Im slow as balls! Ngl I haven't made these much comics since 2019??? RE (esp 6) was just the lil push I need to get back in the groove of things. So anyway here's a scuffed explanation of my process. Like all of my art, I'd begin making small thumbnails, general layouts, panel placements etc. But since these are comics, I have to make a script for the dialogue so I can allot the placement of speech bubbles as they are important to the composition (also I'm kinda terrible at dialogue in general so it's best to prepare it instead of writing them on the spot, after the comic's done)

Yes, this chickenscratch is how I visualize things. (1st one is 'Nick Startled the Witch' 2nd is 'Sasha Yeets Leon Off Roof' and 3rd is 'Jerma Vengaboys') To ensure clarity even at a glance or when I'm not wearing glasses. Sometimes whenever I read comics or manga, I have a hard time processing things (call it a skill issue sure) so keeping this in mind I want things to be easy on the eyes, make the elements flow naturally as you read. Something something golden ratio ohmygodisthatamotherfuckinjojoref- Okay ngl, there may be some merit to my speed in making these. Not all panels need to be perfect, so you don't have to spend every waking hour on every single detail. So only detail parts that you want people to look at the most. I remember someone once mentioned that you can get away w/ easy comics if the faces are drawn really well, esp when it's dialogue heavy.

Also that one phrase from DDLC "If your pen is stuck in one spot, it'll leave a splotch of ink" smthin like that, yea I apply that to art as well. Saves a lot of time! And for the expressive part, I mostly rely on physical/slapstick humor. The Jerma Vengaboys comic was a test to myself if I can still pull it off or improve upon it. My main inspo when making these comics, is isismasshiro on deviantart. They have so much comics, all portraying characters in a Tom and Jerry-like scenarios, hold on I'll grab some of my fav panels from them.

These ones, and others have stuck with me from high school until now. That's how you know a composition is so good, and I try to set myself to that standard (emphasis on trying sfgkheg). The influence their art has on me is clear as day in the Jerma Vengaboys comic lol Anyways, really glad you like my stuff :] and thank you for the interest in my process. Sure I have a lot to explain, but I either don't wanna make this longer than it should be or some of the info I may forget.

Note: I'm very fic reliant. I could like a show but what REALLY gets me into them is the fan content bc they tend to flesh things out more, in a way that I can understand, and make me appreciate characters/events that were not properly explored in canon. Idk if that's gonna be an issue but I'm sure there are elitist people out there who only claim canon content while bashing everyone else for enjoying fan theories and aus.

Excluding my notps, I'd read any story with ships I probably didn't know existed so long as: I already like one or two of the characters in the ship, the thought of them together makes me curious instead of repulsed, and if the story itself looked too interesting for me to ignore.🚫

Haven't caught up to the manga yet but loosely following the anime. Read quite a bit of lengthy Deku centric fics, and that + what I've gotten so far from the show are what fuels my headcanon aus when I draw them.

Naruto

Tbh I only watched the og kids Naruto when I was young and any shippuden knowledge I have is a mix of posts from other fans, Google, and fics. Already said this before in an older post but I read a lot of time travel/fix its so I just assume that when similar events are included in more than 2 timetravel fics (if it's still set in naruto's timeline and not like, minato's or pre konoha), then that's probably what happened in canon. I also just Google any shippuden powers or characters I'm not familiar with, which is quite a lot but it works for me.

Finished it years ago. Memories are vague but posts from other fans and canon adjacent fics help me remember.

Finished the books years ago, probably before or around the same time as ATLA. Only properly watched 5/8 of the movies. Heavily read a lot of fics. Memories of the og content is vague and sometimes I'm not sure if what I know is canon or just widely loved fanon (like the Black library).

If you mean manga and anime I’m currently following/particularly into, then yeah it’s a ton of stuff!! weekly I’m following one piece, jjk, bnha, black clover, ron kamonohashi, and added just a month ago neru: way of the martial artist and the hunters guild: red hood too, and that’s just from jump! weekly I’m also following blue lock, enen no shouboutai and sousou no frieren, and monthly I’m following jibaku shounen hanako-kun and record of ragnarok, and then there’s always d.gray-man once every four months!! and that’s only the manga, right now for the anime I’m following sonny boy, vanitas no carte, re-main and tokyo revengers, and for stuff I’m planning on getting into I’ve had in my to-read list Dr.Stone for a trillion years and I might pick up both vnc and tokrev once the anime are over.... Hmmmmmm to be honest with you I engage little to nothing with the western side of the fandom and the people I follow in the eastern side are handpicked enough that I only see the goge I want to see, so!! I don’t exactly have specific opinions about it cause I’m not involved with it enough, but, well, the reason why I’m not much involved with it is exactly that I didn’t like what I was seeing much... 😂😂 I like my satoru smart and witty! so i get if u don’t wanna answer this cuz questions like this can be hard but!! i’ve been trying to learn to draw for the last month or two, and since ur one of my favorite artists on here i was wondering what made you want to start drawing? was it something u always liked or did u get into a little later on? when u first started how did u pick up skills, and did u have any specific things that helped you develop ur style over time? again pls don’t feel like u have to answer any of this or anything, im just curious!!

To be completely honest with you, I think my artist origin story is embarrassing but I'm happy to share :) I'm pretty sure there are photos of like... toddler me drawing on those magnetic drawing board things so art has probably always been something I enjoy haha. But I actually got invested in art when I was 8 and my brother started reading manga, which prompted me to do that too. I fell in love with the art style I saw in fairy tail and for years I was really inspired by it. I'm not sure if the fairy tail influence still shows in my art but my guess is that there's still an anime-sque aspect to the way I draw? But more on that later.

I don't know what your opinion is on tracing - some people say it's cheating, others don't, whatever - but that's how I started. I wasn't really putting much thought into it, because I was 8, but the thing with tracing is that it's a good way to get used to drawing certain proportions. I don't have any photos of the stuff I did when tracing, but if you look up fairy tail panels you'll get an idea of the style I was trying to learn at the time. Then my family found out I was just tracing stuff and made fun of me for it (I'm still salty about that over a decade later lmao) so I graduated to copying :)

I never enjoyed the concept of properly measuring things out to get exact proportions when I was copying panels, which was inconvenient in some ways but was actually a great way to train my eyes for observational drawing! The trick here is to start small and simple before you move on to more complex images. Did I do that? Probably not, but I'm too ambitious for my own good when it comes to art. Here's some stuff I accomplished during that stage! If you scroll all the down to the first posts I made on my instagram account you can find more that are similar to the one on the right

I did try exploring a style of my own, one based on my imagination rather than simply copying images, but ho boy that was a struggle. It also happened around the time I was starting to get interested in digital art (I must've been around 15yo?) so it was just a whole mess. I don't particularly feel like going into the details of everything I was trying at the time because I really don't remember much of it but my best baby steps were the ones where I observed the styles of artists I really liked. Luckily for me, a couple of my faves posted speedpaints and stuff on youtube, some of which I watched religiously, and it pushed me to experiment with some of the techniques they used. It helped me a lot when trying to find brushes and colouring techniques I liked.

In all honesty though, I think the most progress I've made has been in the past year? This feels embarrassing to say but glee gave me a massive rush of inspiration and I started churning out art like the unhinged sleep-deprived gremlin I am and I allowed myself to experiment with a lot of different things. Figuring out what brushes I like to use, a colouring system that works for me (it still changes regularly ngl), pushing myself with more complex backgrounds and dynamic poses, things like that. I'm still always inspired by other artists, some whom I have admired ever since I started drawing and posting fanart (my main inspiration these days is kkumri!! I've been a fan of her art since my fairy tail days lmao and since her art style is heavily influenced by anime, mine still is too). I guess what I'm saying is that experimentation and practice are key, but it also helps to find things you like about other artists' styles and implement them into your own.

You'll notice I haven't talked about anatomy yet. I wanted to write that in a separate section because anatomy has been its own separate, annoying monster for me. Which is entirely my fault, because I didn't really try learning anatomy until I left my copying stage, and by then a lot of habits had already formed. What helped me the most here was observational drawing! Human anatomy is wildly confusing for me, and trying to learn how to draw the entire body was too stressful, so I like identifying something I struggle with and focusing on it for a while. For example, a while back, I started the 100 heads challenge because I was struggling with faces. My goal was to draw 10 faces a day, for 10 days, and even though I gave up halfway through at only 50 heads, it helped a lot. Last summer, I got really frustrated with hands because I was drawing them more often but they never looked right, so for a few days I would just. sit down. and take the time to sketch out some hands based on a wide variety of references. just hand in different positions, from different perspectives. same with feet. When I started drawing more dynamic poses for the sports aus, I practiced figure drawing and just... Focused on the flow of a pose rather than letting myself get bogged down by details. Sometimes I like drawing in monochromatic to focus on where the lighting is coming from and how it affects the positioning and shape of shadows (that's actually how I started the furtana hiking drawing! coloured in greyscale first!).

I still struggle with things like muscles and clothing folds, both of which are things I know I need to practice and haven't gotten around to doing anytime recently, but to practice those I would take the same approach that I did for anatomy stuff. References are so so important and helpful!! They're actually life-savers for me!

This is getting long so I'll just leave it off here with some final thoughts. This is all stuff that has (kinda) worked for me, and it might not work for you. Everyone has different methods of approaching art and it takes a while to figure out what works best for you. That said, I'm always happy to talk more about art if you have more questions! I'm not sure if you're interested in seeing my usual art process and stuff like that but if you are, ask away! Also, last thought - be nice to yourself! I tend to get really impatient and frustrated if things aren't turning out the way I want them to, but art is just one of those things that takes time and practice. Realistically, your art isn't going to look exactly like you want it to, but that doesn't mean you're not making progress <3

tbh the first part of tg (just regular tokyo ghoul) was such a wonderful interesting story. it wasnt perfect but it was so beautiful regardless.

then re came along and i was skeptical. i knew immediately that the setup of having haise be kaneki would be tricky to handle for many reasons. BUT the first half of the series was fun and fresh and interesting!!! i forgot about a lot of my concerns because the quinx had great potential (especially urie) and having the mc be in the ccg was such a cool way to look into characters like arima and akira.

then the moment GOAT was formed, everything started going downhill. the story felt bland and kanekis huge character flaws + the downsides of having such a ridiculously massive cast size + the fact that it very likely ishida was burntout (and a lil transphobic sometimes too ngl) just took over. and the worst part is!! i loved that kaneki was flawed and selfish!! it was my fav part of the og series. but the series just was stuck in this awkward place.

and dont just take it from me. the fandom fucking DIED not too long after black reaper left. artists that were huge just stopped liking the series (most commonly the shuu fans. your fav got screwed and i pray for yall 🙏) the only thing CLOSE TO the energy the fanbase used to have was: jokes about chapter 125, the reaction to hide coming back, and hide saying he loves kaneki. like fr when else did tg trend or impact mainstream anime memes. and dont even get me started on the stupid bullshit that both sides of the ship wars did. all the harrassment and policing was fucking stupid and ruined the fanbase even more than the shitty story did.

the ending was just nonsense. why did a horror/tragedy manga end w a big bad shounen-like villain fight? why did kaneki get praised for uniting ghouls and humans when he never gave a shit abt ghoulkind as a whole? why do so many people get revived for no reason (naki, eto, hinami too ig)? why is hide supposed to be this very influential important character but his backstory is so vague and we get very little detail abt what actually happened between the sewer and his official return? why does ishida hate mutsukis guts so much? we will never know the answers 😔

my anime boston recap

i told a few people i’d write this, so here. warning, it’s long as fuck.

rebecca black - friday

while waiting for artists’ alley to open, i sat in a corner and watched people go by and saw a group cosplaying the main characters from the extremely underrecognized game the arcana, which was awesome and i totally would have asked for a picture but i’m way too shy. even though i’ve asked cosplayers for pictures before but i seem to have regressed in that sense...

i also saw (and this happened throughout the con) a bunch of hot, fit, really thin girls, which made me feel gay (as expected) but also really envious and sad and insecure about my body. cause i wish i looked more like them.

i also saw two girls cosplaying snow halation!honoka and kotori from love live, and the honoka had a giant honk nesoberi that i totally envy, and then right afterward a hate na heartbeat!eli and nozomi came around the corner and they were the coolest. i wish i’d had the guts to ask them for a picture too.

finally i went to artists’ alley and i got to buy a print from one of my favorite persona 5 fan artists but unfortunately she didn’t have the postcard set i wanted to buy. BUT right across was another fan artist whose stuff i really like so i bought a BUNCH of her prints - one of each of the p5 girls for me, and an extra makoto for my friend - and she came over to thank me and we chatted a little and it was nice. i am fucking determined to befriend some of these people and now at least one of them knows who i am.

i went to a panel on “fandom as coping” presented by a social worker which was really cool. she talked about how even though she’s a social worker, she still went through a severely suicidal period this past year and survived because of yuri on ice. i left partway through because then she turned it over to the audience to share our stories and i didn’t need to hear from a bunch of people talking about bad things that had happened to them.

the next thing i went to, after hanging around the vendors for a while, was tara platt’s (mitsuru and elizabeth from persona 3) q&a. she was really cool, and i actually managed to ask her a question, which was which one she preferred. (she said she can’t choose a favorite, but had more fun with elizabeth.)

i went to a presentation by sunrise, the studio that made love live among other things, but it was boring and i left early again because they were talking about gundam and other action stuff i don’t care about.

i’d planned on going to johnny yong bosch’s (makoto from free, kitamura from toradora, yu and adachi from p4) q&a, but it had a hella long line and it was obvious i wasn’t going to get in since the room wasn’t going to accommodate that many people. so i went over to a panel greg ayres (kaoru from ouran, nagisa from free, monokuma from the danganronpa anime) was doing on “it gets better.” come to find out he is openly bi! and is good friends with his ex who’s a trans woman and confronted her family about misgendering her! he is my new fav ngl and a far cry from hikaru’s va whom i met at tora-con a few years ago and was kind of an ego. it was a conversation sort of panel and we talked about a lot of stuff around queerness and bullying. i had to leave that one early too, but wished i could have stayed for the whole thing. also, there was a girl across the aisle from me who mentioned she was trans, and at one point i happened to catch her looking at me, and i think she was checking me out! sadly, i did not run into her again.

the reason i had to leave early was to get johnny’s autograph. he was really cool and i totes wish i could’ve gone to his q&a. since i don’t actually have any free! or toradora! or p4 merch, i had him sign my p3/p5 dancing game since it did at least come with p4 dancing as a free download. he took his daughter with him to the con which i find adorable though i have to wonder how bored she was sitting there for an hour and a half while he signed autographs.

katy perry - last friday night

at this point, i had a couple hours to kill, so i walked out to newbury comics in the hopes they’d have the bananarama vinyl reissues from the british record store day. they didn’t (though weirdly they did have the shakespears sister one), but they had kacey musgraves’ golden hour on sale, and i’ve been waffling on buying that for ages, so i finally snapped it up. then i went back to the mall where the con (sort of) was and got some godiva ice cream, which was even more overpriced than you’d expect but still very good.

so my last agenda item for the day was yuri lowenthal’s (makoto/minato from p3, yosuke from p4) q&a, which tara crashed because they’re married, which i love because it means that mitsuru is irl the canon waifu. once again i managed to ask a question, which was which p3 girl he’d like to have minato end up with, which made everyone laugh, and of course he said “i want to preserve my marriage, so either mitsuru or elizabeth.”

then i went home and felt like death.

i took an uber to the con for saturday because the T was being replaced with a shuttle bus and i decided i’d rather pay $17 each way for a 15-minute trip than $2.50 each way for a 90-minute trip.

i went to a panel on “idols in anime” that was kind of interesting but i didn’t take much away from it, other than that i should maybe watch revue starlight. but then i went to a panel on “diversity in the magical girl genre” that was really cool. it was hosted by a queer latina woman and she talked about racial, gender, sexual, and ability diversity. it was interesting because she has a very negative view of yuuki yuuna, which i can certainly understand but don’t really share. but it was a great panel and i feel like i learned a lot. one neat idea she had was that what comes across as queerbaiting (or whatever-baiting) to western audiences can be really progressive representation in japan, and vice versa.

after that i went to another panel on “magical girl fashion” and literally got up and left because i couldn’t stand how wrong the presenter was.

i’d missed out both days on the free autograph passes for yuri and tara, so i went to their paid session, which to make a long story short was an absolute fucking disaster, and i ended up making a complaint, during which i cried in front of the con’s assistant director. so there’s something i can check off my bucket list. i also met the director, who came over to reassure me they were fixing things and said, “i keep saying i need a machete to take off people’s heads this year.” so obviously i immediately liked her! in the end, i did get their autographs (on the same p3d/p5d game) for fifty fucking dollars... i’d been expecting more like thirty. and they didn’t even personalize them. sad trombone noise. they were nice though.

then i rushed over to the free autographs and saw kara edwards (chihiro in the danganronpa anime) and had her autograph a wall scroll i’d bought from a vendor. i wish i could’ve gone to her q&a because she seemed sweet.

and right after THAT, i got in line for tara sands (a bunch of pokemon) and had her sign a manga volume i bought for my friend. she was also awesome and i really wish i could have gone to her q&a because we had this exchange:

i then went to greg’s q&a, which was fun. he mentioned that while recording the audio commentary for ouran, caitlin glass (haruhi) and todd haberkorn (hikaru) got really uncomfortable during one of the twincest scenes and started talking about anything else they could so they wouldn’t have to talk about the twincest, and in the commentary you can just hear greg laugh a little because he’d made himself laugh by thinking of saying “i just think it’s hot” but kept himself from saying it out loud. the hero we deserve tbh.

whigfield - saturday night (i actually don’t like that song btw)

at this point, it was time for the 18+ panels to start, so i went to one where yuri, tara platt, lisa ortiz (idk her), and billy kametz (same) did in-character readings of various scripts. they did a couple of star wars ones which obviously did nothing for me, except that tara did bb-8 in a christopher walken voice, which was fucking hysterical. the other one i remember was lisa doing a southern belle voice narrating the notebook, with yuri as sasuke (i think) as noah, and billy as lelouch (?) as ally. but the best one, of course, was the last one, which was the iocane powder scene from the princess bride, performed by yuri as spider-cop (iirc) as the sicilian and tara as elizabeth as westley. it was AMAZING.

then i went to greg’s 18+ panel where he recounted risqué stories like when his mom wanted to watch an anime where his character has anal sex. i remember it being hilarious but unfortunately don’t remember any specifics other than him affectionately calling his lawyer the C-word and a story about beating up an asshat in the o’hare airport after asshat broke a jigglypuff ornament his friend made him.

so having stayed out past 11:30 for greg’s panel the night before, and forgetting to take melatonin before bed... i actually couldn’t wake up sunday morning so didn’t end up going back to the con at all. which was really sad and disappointing as it meant i missed getting greg’s autograph, a panel on autism in anime fandom, and the voice actor roundtable panel, all of which i really wanted. so after finally getting up at 2:30pm i spent the rest of the day super depressed and mad at myself and just sad and disappointed.

-One younger brother. We used to not get along at all bc he was a major dickweed and y’know regular sibling rivalry. But in the past year or so we haven’t had problems.

-Currently, get into Cal-Arts and study animation. Also just generally be a more recognized artist.

-Not anymore. I used to play tennis. I go to the gym when I can (so I can look better in ((katsuki)) cosplay heehhehe)

-Hmmm, I suppose people who aren’t judgemental and let people live their lives and pursue their interests without mocking them.

-Orange and black rubber bracelets. They used to be Pokemon theme, but the design rubbed of. But I like orange and black (bc they remind me of Katsuki hahaha) so I keep them.

-Fam I am a fucking pun lord. One of my proudest moments was when I was watching Silence of the Lambs with my dad. And at the end of the movie Hannibal escaped. And I turned to my dad and was like, “Guess this means that he’s...On The Lam”. But yeah I dish out puns on the daily.

-Night, for sure. I’m much more productive in the evening and late night.

-Prob around 70. Tho I like colder weather too bc I enjoy cold weather clothes.

I’m so so SO glad you’re liking it!!!!!! It can get kinda heavy but it’s such a great story.... honestly I’d been wanting to start it since I saw the first pv for the anime all the way back last year but I was like, you know it’s a mappa anime! so I wanted to watch the anime as a new thing, cause I love mappa, but three episodes in I couldn’t hold back and just binged it. That’s been my headcanon for a while now, actually!! Ah man, I’m sorry but I’m not the best person to ask this to! I started this sideblog cause I had too many followers on my main and I didn’t want my stuff to be seen by that many people at first, so whatever I did probably isn’t what you’re looking for :( but really there isn’t much to it, just post whatever you like to draw, tag it as best as you can (but remember that only the first five tags appear in the search page) and be patient, since whatever you do at first you won’t get much attention anyway - the only real advice I can give is to draw something that makes you happy and that you’d draw anyway even if no one were to see it, it’ll make keep posting despite a possible lack of activity a lot easier!

THANK YOU FOR LIKING HIM HE’S CALLED DAVIDE Dav for short, he’s a cat of a man and a music instrument enthusiast (mostly string ones, but he’s very good with the piano as well) - he works in a music instruments store, and he’s a uni student majoring in philosphy! He doesn’t like bothersome things, he isn’t very good at taking anything seriously or putting effort in stuff, but he’s very chill to spend time with and generally a nice chat both if you want mindless thoughts or deep conversations (he’s a philosophy major after all). He can’t sing for shit, he’s got two cats (tago and schelly!), and he just wants a quiet life to laze around but all his friends are hurricanes in human bodies, but then again, he picked them himself so he can’t complain.
