Why did Britain fail to stop the war?
Tumblr media
Back in 2005, the Washington Post reported that they asked Margaret Thatcher, whether she would have invaded Iraq given the intelligence at the time.
Apparently, Lady Thatcher replied: "I was a scientist before I was a politician. And as a scientist I know you need facts, evidence and proof - and then you check, recheck and check again."
She added: "The fact was that there were no facts, there was no evidence, and there was no proof. As a politician the most serious decision you can take is to commit your armed services to war from which they may not return."
As The Guardian reported; The invasion was launched on “evidence” about weapons of mass destruction (WMDs) that consisted mostly of whatever it was Iraqi informants knew our intelligence agencies most wanted to hear and would happily pay for.
The biggest contributor to this self-fulfilling dossier was an alcohol-fixated defector called Curveball, who later admitted his improvisations about chemical weapons weren’t true.
As Armando Iannucci explained, At the time, I was numb with confusion and horror that the British democratic system could allow a prime minister, fixated on a threat people were telling him wasn’t there, to get his party and his opponents to back a war with no purpose, no target, no endgame and no rationale. We all told Blair at the time it wasn’t going to end well.
Although it’s 20 years since the Iraq war started, and coming up to 19 years since my son was killed, it still feels like yesterday to me. As Rose Gentle described to The Guardian; For years after my Gordon’s death in Iraq, I campaigned for justice – until the 2016 (Iraq) inquiry and that encounter (with then British Prime Minister Tony Blair).
For years and years there was no resolution and no consolation – until the Iraq inquiry finally gave its verdict in July 2016. All the families sat in that room as everything we had said was shown to be true: Blair had deliberately exaggerated the threat posed by Saddam and WMD; peaceful alternatives had not been exhausted; the military were not properly equipped.
Blair said afterwards that some mistakes had been made, and I thought: “Well, why did you make those mistakes?” Not once during the inquiry did he look at any of the families in that room. As he walked by me with his security guards, I said to him: “You murdered my son.” They just rushed him out of the door.

Code name: Crosshair
Gender: UTP
Age: 40+
FC: UTP
From battlefield to shadowed alleys, Crosshair transformed from a dedicated soldier to a lethal contract assassin. A decorated veteran of the Iraqi war, Crosshair traded their uniform for anonymity, driven by a desire for control over life and death. Trained in the arts of combat, their loyalty shifted from country to coin, accepting contracts that required a cold precision reminiscent of their military days. As they navigate the morally grey realm of their position among the Jolly Rogers, they seek solace and purpose amid the echoes of gunfire, a soldier still, but now a harbinger of fate.

Canadian Premier League teams add young talent to rosters via the U Sports draft
Expansion Vancouver FC added two players to its roster Thursday by taking Anthony White and Ameer Kinani with the first two picks of the CPL U Sports draft. The eight Canadian Premier League clubs were allowed to each select two players from a list of 199 university athletes who declared for the draft, the biggest prospect pool in league history. The draft was open to any U-Sports underclassmen with one to four years of eligibility remaining, provided they were in good standing and were planning to return to school the following year.
Eight of the 16 players selected were defenders. Players selected may be invited to pre-season training with their prospective club, where they can compete for a roster spot for the 2023 CPL season.
Vancouver opened the draft by taking White, a defender from the University of Toronto, and Kinani, a forward from Toronto Metropolitan University. The selection order was then based on the 2022 order of finish, with the last-place team selecting first and CPL champion Forge FC going last in both rounds. Vancouver, which did not have a pick in the second round, made goalkeeper Callum Irving its first-ever signing on Wednesday. White, a center-back from Port Moody, B.C., has made 22 appearances for the Varsity Blues through two seasons, including 18 starts. In the past, he has trained at FC Nuremberg in Germany as well as Croatia's Dinamo Zagreb and NK Sibenik. He won the inaugural League 1 title with TSS Rovers this season.
“It is unique to find left-footed central defenders in the soccer market,” said Vancouver FC head coach Afshin Ghotbi. “Anthony is a talented and intelligent young defender who has lofty goals for his soccer career. "I was impressed by his ambition and look forward to getting to know him even better in the future.”
White, a second-year kinesiology student, hopes to follow the lead of defender Lukas MacNaughton, who went from the University of Toronto to the CPL's Pacific FC and MLS's Toronto FC. Kinani, an Iraqi youth international, scored four goals in 11 games this season for Toronto Metropolitan University. He added 17 more in 20 games for ProStars FC in League 1 Ontario this summer and previously spent time with Cartagena FC in Spain.
“Ameer is always dangerous in front of the goal,” said Ghotbi. “With and without the ball, he is committed to running behind back lines and creating havoc with his pace." Ameer boasts a natural nose for the goal and has the instincts needed to be in the right positions at the right moments.

The PROJECTREAL house welcomes contestant FINN HUDSON! Finn, written by S, will be playing for the charity of his choice, the BIG BROTHERS BIG SISTERS! You’ll have 24 hours to get in, get settled, and claim your bed before the games officially begin! Have fun, consider your strategy, and remember- the world is watching.
In Character
Name: Finn Hudson
Age: 28
Gender/Pronouns: cis man he/him
Sexuality: not sure, he thinks he's straight though
Hometown:  California
Birth Order (oldest, youngest, middle, only child)? How many siblings?: come talk to me before applying, Finn would be the oldest because I'm keeping the lack of older role models outside of his mom
Open to Cousins?: yes 1 or 2
FC: Manny Jacinto
Known For: Youtuber
Charity of Choice (can be real or made up!): Big Brothers Big Sisters
Finn was raised by his mother and father until his father died when he was very young. He was told that his father died in the Iraqi war, but he found out in high school that he died of a drug overdose somewhere after abandoning the family for the millionth time to party. The image he had of his father is still a good one though, he still misses and loves him. The only other male role model he had growing up was the guy that came around to spray paint the lawn, someone his mom was seeing for a while. This man introduced Finn to rock music and his love for drumming. He took up football in high school and started a Youtube channel on the side during the first big boom era of Youtube. His channel covered sports topics, music covers, video games, and stuff he thought was funny or important-- most of which people also think is funny. One day he grilled a cheese sandwich and after a series of videos about the Grilled Cheesus, he ate it and signed up for Project Real because he thinks the sandwich wanted him to through "signs" that he felt he saw at the time.
What made your character want to get involved in PROJECTREAL?: He wants to support a charity, after his Grilled Cheesus told him to give back before he ate it.
What is your character most looking forward to during the show?: Having fun.
Is there anything your character is nervous about?: Not really.
Does your character have a strategy for getting through to the end?:  Or are they simply playing from the heart?: He hasn't thought that far.
Why did your character choose the charity they chose?: He didn't have a role model growing up and he wants to not only be one for others, but help those he can't reach find someone of their own. He hopes to get some publicity for it, because he didn't know it existed before he asked his mom to help him look up charities.

Iraqi Muslim who orchestrated jihad attack that killed 5 U.S. troops gets 26 years, then release to Canada
“Muhammad ‘Isa’s efforts to facilitate a suicide attack, one that ultimately resulted in the death of five young American soldiers in Iraq, has landed him a sentence of more than two decades behind bars...”
Tumblr media
Faruq Khalil Muhammad 'Isa was a resident of Edmonton, Canada, and a member of a multinational network that helped those hoping to carry out suicide bombings travel to Iraq, according to the Department of Justice.
A Canadian man was sentenced to 26 years in prison for conspiring to kill five US soldiers in Iraq in a 2009 suicide attack.
On April 10, 2009, a convoy of five vehicles carrying US soldiers was outside the Forward Operating Base Marez in Iraq when a dump truck, under fire by Iraqi guards, breached the checkpoint, passed four vehicles and detonated next to the fifth.
The blast left a 60-foot-deep crater about 50 yards outside of the base's entrance.
The explosion killed several Iraqi citizens as well as five soldiers: Sgt. Edward Forrest Jr., PFC Bryce E. Gautier, Sgt. FC Bryan E. Hall, Cpl. Jason G. Pautsch and Staff Sgt. Gary L. Woods.
The Department of Justice said that while living in Canada, 'Isa communicated with members of the terrorist network, some of whom carried out the attack, to facilitate their travel from Syria to Iraq and offer "words of encouragement and religious guidance.
"In recorded phone and electronic communications with numerous co-conspirators, including would-be suicide bombers and facilitators based in Iraq, 'Isa often referred to carrying out terrorist attacks as getting "married," as in marriage to 70 virgins or "farming," because they "plant metal and harvest metal and flesh," according to the Justice Department's criminal complaint.
Court documents show 'Isa regularly checking in with the foreign fighters to find out the status of their "marriages" -- and he even discussed his terrorist activities with his own family based in Iraq. He urged his sister to "learn about weapons and go attack the police and Americans," according to court documents.
He was first arrested in 2011 and pleaded guilty on March 6, 2018 to conspiracy to commit murder of United States Nationals as part of a plea agreement.
After his release from prison, 'Isa will be sent to Canada under lifetime supervised release, the DOJ said.
"Today's sentence brings some measure of earthly justice to an individual involved in the deaths of five service members, but it cannot begin to compensate for the evil he contributed to or alleviate the pain of those families whose lives he changed forever," Assistant Attorney General Demers said in a statement after the sentencing.
