British actress Helen McCrory has died, husband Damian Lewis says

LONDON (Reuters) - Britain's Helen McCrory, who starred in Harry Potter films and the Peaky Blinders television series, has died after a battle with cancer, her husband Damian Lewis said on Twitter on Friday. Addressing the Perennial “Nice Guy”

A long time ago, I broke up with my first boyfriend, and he proceeded to say to me, "This is because I'm a nice guy, huh? Nice guys always finish last." I sputtered, not expecting this response, and walked away from the situation. After a few years of reflection, this is what I wish I would have said about this increasing "nice guy" excuse.

If you were really a nice guy, I wouldn't be breaking up with you. There are underlying issues in every relationship, and this nice guy excuse completely ignores any fault at the hands of the boy, solely placing the blame on the girl. This just proves that the person is not nice because, frankly, a nice person would not blame another person during an argument. There is fault on both sides in most breakups; by pulling the "nice guy excuse," a guy tries to avoid his inevitable participation in the breakup.

Being a nice guy doesn't make him special. Sadly, in this day and age, niceness is becoming a forgotten art. Kindness should be a given in any relationship; a girl should not have to be grateful for a guy that is simply "nice." Real men bring other qualities to the table: humor, quirkiness, compassion, empathy. Nice has so many different connotations and denotations. According to the Merriam Webster Dictionary, nice is an adjective meaning "pleasing, agreeable, or socially acceptable". Obviously, words take on different meanings for every person, but nice is not a word I use regularly to describe people I enjoy. Nice is the word I use when I meet someone new, and I can't quite put a finger on why I don't like him, so I simply say, "He seems nice." For me, this word possesses a negative connotation! It is simply a word I use to describe something that is ok, not great, but ok. Which brings me to my next point…

You should never ever settle for a guy. Just because he is nice doesn't mean he deserves a second date, or even a second consideration. Long-term boyfriend material better be more than just nice. Guys are using this excuse to make girls pity them. "Oh the poor nice guy, he can't get a date." NO! That is not how it is supposed to be. Have you ever considered that he isn't so nice? Nice is simply a word for meeting the standards, not anything more. If we all simply meet the standards in life, where would we go? Our relationships should be no different. A true man should go above and beyond the standards, not just barely graze them.

In my own experience, the guys quoting this famous line, "Nice guys finish last," are not usually nice guys. They use this line as a cover-up for their own guilt. My own ex, for example, had become extremely possessive and wanted to monopolize my time so that I was his number one priority. As a Catholic woman, God comes first in my life, then family, then friends, and my boyfriend is last. People may disagree with me, and this definitely turns many guys away, but I want to date a boy that values his immediate family above me. When girls raise their standards, guys will rise up to meet them. It won't be easy, but it will be worth it. Another example, a guy I know quoted this after his girlfriend broke up with him - for cheating! He cheated on her and then proceeded to pull the nice guy excuse. That is completely unacceptable.

Still other guys use this line when they cannot get a date. I don't expect 18th century gender roles, but a little chivalry would be nice. The guys complaining are often so timid that they haven't even made a move! Girls are intuitive, but they aren't mind readers. I have seen so many boys bemoan their state of singleness without even trying to show the girl that they are into her. Guys should make the first move sometimes - it’s all about equality folks.

To address girls and bad boys. Yes, some girls are attracted to guys with the "bad" stereotype. The "bad" boys that are into drugs, drinking, and crimes should be avoided. But a guy that likes hard rock music, or rides a skateboard fearlessly, or seems to be more withdrawn and introverted? Those are unique guys. Not bad ones. They are far more interesting that the underachieving nice guys.

And so, girls, never fall for the "nice guy excuse." Kindness is a given, not an option. Don't let under ambitioned boys guilt you into dating them. Date funny boys, quirky ones, misunderstood ones, understanding ones. Don't lower your standards to the realm of simply nice guys.
