"Karam": KSHMR's Latest Album is the Best Project in Desi Hip Hop
When global EDM, Trap & Bass pioneer KSHMR, born Niles Hollowell-Dhar, announced his the most anticipated debut Desi hip hop album ‘Karam’, which he took almost 2 years to complete and it breathed fresh air into India’s thriving Hip-Hop scene. While millions of KSHMR’s avid listeners see his album as the biggest rap album of the year in India, for many artists and record producers, ‘Karam’ is the much-needed cultural push which might go down as one of the best Hip-Hop albums in history.
In ever-growing Indian Desi Hip-Hop scene, where every beat tells a story and every rhyme narrates an experience, KSHMR dropped his the most anticipated Desi Hip-Hop album "Karam" on November 3rd, 2023. And I have to say this is not just a musical creation; it's a testament to the enduring power of hip-hop when one SuperProducer wielded with the artists in the scene along with some new and upcoming thriving talented faces for a story to tell.
KSHMR collaborated with many artists those who are the OG faces of DHH like Ikka, Raftaar and Krsna alongwith some new and fresh heavyweight talents brewing up in today's scene like a morning Coffee as such Rawal, HanumanKind and only recurring artist from this album Yashraj who has 3 features in album.
This album is not just a collection of beats; it's a sonic odyssey that navigates like a classic Bollywood crime drama movie from the 90s. Let's embark on a detailed review and breakdown of this masterpiece.
The Prelude: Setting the Movie Tone for an album
"Karam" isn't an album you merely listen to; it's an experience that begins with the very first beat. The album opens a portal into KSHMR's creative movie, where each track is a distinct scene. The tone is set, and the listener is invited into a sonic movie journey that begins with some deep philosophy.
The cover art: The Infinite Ouroboros
Tumblr media
"Karam" album Cover Art
The album cover art of "Karam" is simplistic but it hits the mark. It is perfecty alleigned with name, theme and plot of an album. The whole album talks about the law of karma. In simple words, "The deeds(Karam) you do will turn around and come back to you". This cover art is inspired by one ancient Symbol called "Ouroboros", a circular symbol that depicts a snake or dragon devouring its own tail and that is used especially to represent the eternal cycle of destruction and rebirth.
Tumblr media
The Ouroboros
Tumblr media
The Infinite Ouroboros
Here In this art too, you can see a raging snake like figure eating its own tail in anger and hunger, but here making an infinity symbol instead of a circular representing "The Infinite Ouroboros". Which explains that Karma is an infinite loop. If I'd have to explain this with an example then you can suppose if someone did something bad and hurtful to you, you'll do the same to them, by that, they will do even worse to you and you'll do even worse to them, and this cycle will go on and on and will create an infinite loop of Karma. Remember this example because this same thing happened in the album twice on two different occasions. Colour scheme used in the cover is dark and hauntingly red which also support the plot of the album that you will be experienced, and it also represents that your Karma will always Haunt you no matter what.
This Album is spans for more than 50 minutes. It has totally 24 tracks, 10 Interludes and 14 songs. Now let's dive deep into the album and explore every songs and Interludes with the story of an album itself.
1. The Beginning - Interlude
Album opens with our protagonist as a kid who has an alcoholic and abusive father physically abusing his mother. When he tries to confront him, his father forced to get him out of his home along with his mother. Now that he's homeless, one thing he does that to start aspiring and dreaming for getting out this poor circumstances. Where, the first song of this album "dream"comes into play.
2. Dream (feat. Ikka & Karra)
This is the perfect opening track for the album. It's an upbeat and inspiring song about the power of dreams. The lyrics are simple but effective, and the beat is catchy and uplifting.
In this song, the protagonist is wandering in streets of Mumbai having one dream in his eye that he wants to own this city no matter what situations he has to go through.
Ikka penned his very strong, highly aspiring and gangster vibe giving two verses with impeccable flows, witty rhyme schemes and some awesome references. He talked about being self motivated and driven by dream so blindy that he's not seeing whatever he's doing it's good or bad.
3. The plan - interlude
Our protagonist seems frustrated and exhausted from his low life and decided to do something big, so he planned a robbery with his brother in arms and setting a stage for upcoming song "Bhussi".
4. Bhussi (feat. Seedhe Maut & Karan Kanchan)
This track is a bit darker and more atmospheric. It's about the struggles of everyday life, and the lyrics are raw and honest. The beat is also dark and menacing, but it's also strangely hypnotic.
In this track, Protagonist robs a bank because he was tired of not having money in his life. That's where he first stepped in in a crime and underworld scene of Mumbai.
5. The money - Interlude
The Robbery was successful and now the protagonist has so much money in his hands that he's going to buy that club where his friend was refused to enter before. This interlude a subtle callback to Ikka's one bar "I'll buy that land where I'm not supposed to put my feet".
6. Zero after Zero (feat. KR$NA & Talay Riley)
One of the standout tracks on the album is "Zero After Zero" featuring Krsna and Talay Riley. This song perfectly blends Indian influenced elements, creating a unique and captivating sound. Krsna's powerful and dynamic vocals combined with Talay Riley's smooth and soulful voice add depth and emotion to the track. The production quality of this song is top-notch, with KSHMR's signature attention to detail evident in every aspect of the music.
The only con of this song is also standing out of the plot of an album, because in this track, KR$NA was more talking about his own things and deeds. So this song has zero to next progress in storyline.
7. Upar Hi Upar (feat. Yashraj & Rawal)
It features Yashraj and Rawal, two of the most popular upcoming rappers in India. The song starts with a catchy melodious 808s that is reminiscent of versatile capabilities of KSHMR. The beat then drops, and Yashraj and Rawal start rapping. Their lyrics are about the importance of staying true to your roots and celebrating your culture. They also rap about the power of community and how it can help you achieve your dreams.
In the progress of the storyline, the protagonist is going up and up on his own way achieving everything he had dreamt of one by one.
8. Godfather (feat. Nazzz)
This song is one of a kind when nobody expected to see Nazz feature in KSHMR's album. And where Nazz is and there are no punchlines, it cannot be happened. So this song is so Nazz being Nazz, full of punchlines and hardcore Desi gangta vibe giving.
In this song, the protagonist now at top of his game ruling the underworld of city and becomes a Godfather now.
9. Bhasad - interlude
This interlude makes an appearance of the antagonist of an album, His name is "Raja bhai".
And Raja bhai is not happy with our Protagonist because, he is doing business in territory of Raja bhai. So the antagonist warns him saying that his actions will cost him one day.
10. All fall down (feat. Yashraj, Raja Kumari & Riar Saab)
This very song can be labelled as "Certified Banger". KSHMR went out of realm with his bombarding beat. Raja Kumari dropped the Sickest Hook of the entire Album. So big Props to Raja Kumari for this. Yashraj and Riar Saab dropped their energetic verses talking about everyday normal life of a gangster and then went back and forth at the outro verse. The hook is played 4 times in this song and also main Highlight of this track, because it happens very rare when the chorus outshined the actual verses and that's exactly what happened here.
In progression of storyline, Protagonist's gang has some little feuds and shootings with Raja Bhai's gang, where protagonist lost his few gang members. So protagonist felt like his new empire is falling down.
11. B.I.G. (feat. Harjas & PUNA)
This is a calming and sit-back giving vibe track that showcases the rapper's raw talent and lyrical prowess. The song opens with a catchy low beat that immediately grabs the listener's attention, and Harjas's confident delivery adds to the song's intensity.
The lyrics of "B.I.G." are introspective and thought-provoking, as Harjas raps about his struggles and aspirations. He speaks about overcoming adversity, having maturity and achieving success, and his words are both relatable and inspiring. This song has mixed reviews, low retention value and maybe not favourite song of anyone from this album. Some things just didn't work out in this song. But still, it's a really good song.
Our protagonist seems to have some maturity and realisation about his crime life.
12. La vida (feat. Dabzee & Vedan)
This is the song where KSHMR went into "Despasito" mode and threw a really vibey song with having two south indian rappers which I never heard of them before, rapping in 2 distinct South Indian languages. As I'm not familiar with any south indian languages, i haven't understood anything in this song, and yet I was vibing with it all the way long. This is one those songs where you don't need to worry about lyrics and just vibe with the song.
13. The Girl - interlude
As I said before, this is not just an album, it's a Bollywood movie. And movie is not complete without having a heroine. So here comes a female lead in our story, where the protagonist saw one girl on pathway at night looking for taxi and finds her very attractive.
14. Hath Varthi (feat. MC Stan)
Now that a Girl arrived in the scene, now it's time to hit the club and play a "Club Anthem" of this album which is Harth Varthi. The Best beat production by KSHMR in Karam. And it features MC Stan so you couldn't care less about lyrics. But still he delivered his funky verses where he talked about a girl he's hitting on and about his fame and everything. Overall it's really good song just made for playing in parties.
After seeing that girl, maybe our protagonist hits the club and partied all night.
15. Nasheeli Raat - interlude
That girl he saw at that night now is distracting the protagonist so bad that he can't be seeing anything but her face. He realised that he's in love with her. And what time is it? It's time for a "love song".
16. Mere bina (feat. PropheC & Talha Anjum)
This track is a love song about the importance of staying true to yourself. The lyrics are heartfelt and romantic, and the beat is soft and melodic. Anjum's verse was short but yet so effective. Showing that the protagonist is really serious about this one.
17. The Argument - interlude
In this one, we can see that our protagonist is with that girl and showing her a beach-side luxurious villa which he just bought for her. But the Girl is in concern about his gangster life. She doesn't want to live in a luxury bungalow which is made by rivering bloods. So they both have some arguments about it. In the end the girl asks him to quit his gangster life and said "your gun will take my life one day"
18. Maula (feat. Munawar)
In here, we are seeing a Standup Comedian is rapping about deep and serious things about life. This is an introspective track that showcases Munawar's unique storytelling ability and his raw talent. The song opens with a haunting melody that sets the tone for the track, and Munawar's heartfelt delivery adds to the song's emotional depth.
The lyrics of "Maula" are deeply personal and relatable, as Munawar raps about his struggles with faith, doubt, and the search for meaning in life. He speaks about his struggles with self-acceptance and his search for a higher power, and his words are both honest and vulnerable.
Our protagonist is now thinking about what consequences he will might face in the future if he quit his life now and starts living peacefully with his love interest, he's scared of his past and his karma if ever might hurt her too. So he was praying to God and asking for some help to show him right way.
19. The Call - interlude
Our protagonist was spending happy times with the girl when he gets a call from his sidekick friend who went to have some deal in Raja Bhai's area without even telling our protagonist. The deal Turned out as a trap of Raja Bhai where he shot dead the Protagonist's friend and he died on call. We can see the protagonist crying and screaming in pain on the other side.
20. Khoya sab (feat. Yungsta & Lisa Mishra)
Now that our protagonist lost his friend and second in command of his gang, he's feeling like he lost everything and everything is falling apart around him. It's perfect time for a sad song.
This is really powerful track filled with full of emotions that showcases Yungsta and Lisa Mishra's unique talents. Opening with a haunting beat and captivating lyrics, the song immediately draws the listener into its world of introspection and self-discovery. Yungsta's verses are filled with raw emotion and honesty, while Lisa Mishra's soothing voice provides a counterbalance, adding depth, resonance and melancholy to the song.
The lyrics of 'Khoya Sab' explore themes of loss, regret, and the search for meaning in life, with Yungsta and Lisa Mishra sharing their personal experiences and struggles. The song's title translates to 'Lost Everything', reflecting the feeling of being adrift and searching for a sense of purpose.
Considering the best track from this album, it's many people's the most favourite song. Overall, this is very impacting and moving song that will leave a lasting impression on the listener. It's a must-listen for fans of hip-hop and anyone who has experienced the depths of loss and the search for meaning in life.
21. The Revenge - interlude
Now our protagonist is all set to take revenge of his friend's death from Raja Bhai. He's well prepared for going on to full pledged gang war.
22. Enemies (feat. HanumanKind & Yashraj)
This is a "Gym Song" energetic track that showcases the raw talent and lyrical prowess of HanumanKind and Yashraj. The song opens with a hard-hitting beat that immediately grabs the listener's attention, and the confident delivery of HanumanKind and Yashraj adds to the song's intensity.
HanumanKind and Yashraj deliver their lyrics with a confidence that is both impressive and captivating. They command the listener's attention and make their words resonate.
This song gives you a feeling of action packed fight scenes from movie playing BGM exactly like this.
In the long outro, our protagonist seems like winning the war but he's injured, filled with bullet holes and slowly dying.
23. Legacy (feat. Raftaar)
Now that our protagonist is dead, it's time to talk to the legacy he sets. This is a tribute giving and motivational track that serves as a fitting finale to KSHMR's album "Karam". The song opens with a soaring melody that immediately sets the tone for Raftaar's inspiring lyrics. The song's production is top-notch, with a blend of drill elements that perfectly complement Raftaar's confident delivery.
Raftaar's lyrics in "Legacy" are both personal and universal, as he reflects on his own experiences and aspirations while also offering words of encouragement to others. He speaks about the importance of hard work and dedication, the power of dreams, and the legacy that one can leave behind. His words are both relatable and inspiring, and they are sure to resonate with listeners who are striving to achieve their own goals.
The production of "Legacy" is equally impressive, with a beat that is both driving and uplifting. The song's overall sound is polished and professional, and it perfectly complements Raftaar's message of perseverance and success.
Overall, "Legacy" is a perfect finale closing album track on "Karam". It is sure to made to inspire listeners to chase their dreams and leave their own mark on the world.
24. The end - interlude
The narrator voice says "in this life full of ups and downs, you finally get to your end, and nothing else comes with you except your Karam"
Conclusion
Overall, "Karam" is a must-listen album for fans of both electronic music and hip hop. It is a well-produced album with a star-studded lineup of artists and a variety of different styles. The album is also a celebration of Indian culture and the power of dreams. KSHMR really have done something never like before in Desi Hip-Hop scene. Undeniablly, the best project of 2023.
So, if you're looking for an album that is both upbeat and inspiring, then I highly recommend checking out "Karam" by KSHMR. It's an album that will stay with you long, maybe for entire lifetime after you've finished listening to it.
Peace out, and see you next time!

Week 2: An Album a Day 2024
Tumblr media
8. VALKYRIE ONE, Set to Stun
this set to stun album is arguably more varied than their others, specifically it has, i think, a lot more really dramatic build up moments that are incredible to listen to. this is another metalcore album but with a lot of funky variety. i personally love it. it was a no-skip album for me some highlights included 'Walk Tall II,' and 'V: VALKYRIE ONE.' they also play around with a lot of different lenght tracks, with lengths ranging from one to nine minutes, which is fun. this album is relatively short and a great listen for enjoyers of fast paced metal.
9. YUNGBLUD, YUNGBLUD
this album is fun. did not top some of his other stuff, specifically weird!, for me. i enjoy some tracks as one offs but at some point he has started to feel repetitive to me. this is not to say i do not enjoy the tracks, they just tend to feel overplayed relatively quickly. this is a pop/alternative album with some really fun moments as well as some ballad type pop punk sound. some highlights include 'The Funeral' and 'Sweet Heroine.'
10. I Love You, I'm Trying, grandson
this is a pop/alt album with some genre mashing which is definitely fun. i enjoyed the album, specifically some of the tracks as stand alones. my one issue with some stuff from this grandson album is it becomes difficult to lose yourself in the music. that is something i personally highly value in music so having that missing makes it hard for me to enjoy something as much. 'Drones' and 'Something To Hide' were some of my highlights.
11. Tell Me I'm Alive, All Time Low
i keep revisiting many tracks on this album. this is an alt rock album with some really intense feels. all time low has so much variety over their career and this is an incredible album that i enjoyed more than some of their earlier stuff (i have not heard everything for the record). if you enjoy emotionally packed rock songs, check this one out. highlights include 'Modern Love' and "English Blood // American Heartache.'
12. Omnition, COSM
yall i only found this album because i was digging through the cd closet at my radio station and i thought the cover looked cool. this album is amazing. i dont know what genre to label it as. it is rock adjacent for sure but it's generally slow and drawn out /pos and full of emotions and feels like it scratches all the right things. truly an amazing find and has like next to no streams. the entire album is great but some specific highlights were 'Never Enough' and 'Whirlwind.'
13. All My Demons Greeting Me as a Friend (Deluxe), AURORA
i love aurora her stuff is always so good and fits right in the autism playlists /pos. this is a pop album with some alternative feel at times but mostly pop imo. it is so hard to pick favorites off of this album but some highlights are 'Murder Song (5, 4, 3, 2, 1)' and 'Running with the Wolves.' a very fun album with a lot of fun rhythms and time signatures, if i am remembering correctly.
14. Manny's Chromatic Anachronicles (EP), Paticornio
this, if i am remembering what actually happened, is an EP made by a member of a discord server for an artist i enjoy. it is sort of indie rock/alternative. it has some really fun guitar and drum styles, along with some fun sounds and harmonies that remind me of the vibe of AJJ or just general folk punk. some of my highlights are 'Blue' and 'Red.' the cover is also really cool. there are four tracks on the EP and each is a color title; the album cover is 4 squares with pictures featuring each color, which is a cool touch.

The roar of a dragon echoes and I look ‘up’ desperate to find a rescuer. Caraxes flies just above me and I yell for Daemon. Aemon Targaryen’s corpse gurgled and burst into blazing red sparks that made my body feel like hot fire had landed as I was pelted with it as much as the sea below me was. I reach out hopelessly, and I hit the sea with an all mighty crash.
I shoot up in bed, my hair in disarray and heart pounding like I had just won a marathon. My stomach cramps uncomfortably, and I throw off my sheets.
As expected the bed is stained with blood.

2, 3 and 14 for the end of year asks?
2. Album of the year?
I'm sure you understand how difficult this is to answer! I've listened to so much music this year! A lot of albums I've loved came out! If someone asks this again I'm probably going to give a different answer but
Anno 1696 by Insomnium - spent all year with it, I think I can safely say it's my new favorite Insomnium album (which is saying something bc they have 8 LPs and I like them all). If they're a band you're already familiar with, you'll know what to expect from them. Nothing in Anno 1696 is particularly revolutionary for Insomnium. They've been crafting dynamic, beautiful melodic death metal for 20+ years. They've done a concept record before. What elevates Anno 1696 for me is just how much of a distillation of this band's strengths it is for me: the melodies are beautiful, the lyrics are smart and compelling, it's deeply emotional without losing any of the heaviness that I want from them. The Sakis Tolis feature on "White Christ" fuckin SMOKES - that song gives me goosebumps. And as if that wasn't enough, the fact that they followed it up this year with the Songs of the Dusk EP is so fucking cool. The idea of writing a concept album and then adding on a canon-divergence au ending in the form of an EP? Fucking genius.

3. Favorite musical artist / group you started listening to this year?
Started listening to being operative here - I really liked Void of Vision. They were the only band on the bill at Invent Animate's Heavener tour this year that I did know at all. I didn't check them out before either, so I went in totally cold. The mix at the venue was terrible all night, but Void of Vision put a lot of energy into their set, I loved the vibe, what I could hear sounded good - I texted one of my friends after the set "I bet I'm going to really love this band when I can actually here them." And I was right! It's metalcore with a fun goth/industrial edge. Nothing crazy but a fun additional texture that really hooked me. They're like if Motionless in White made music I actually enjoyed. Super fun, great show, very sweet people. As a Spiritbox fan, I think you might like them.

14. Favorite book you read this year?
Painful to pick just one! I did wrap up my Top 3 on this blog before (Our Share of Night by Mariana Enriquez, The Spear Cuts Through Water by Simon Jimenez, A Day of Fallen Night by Samantha Shannon) but if you twist my arm and I have to pick one out of those three, it'd be A Day of Fallen Night, for sentimental reasons. I mean it was an extremely rewarding and engaging read for me, but it was also one of those books that shows up when you really, really need it. Got me through a very painful and difficult month, and I'm always going to love it for that. Plus it was gay as hell.

Via Wikipedia: Here, My Dear is the fifteenth studio album by music artist Marvin Gaye, released as a double album on December 15, 1978, on #Motown-subsidiary label #TamlaRecords. Recording sessions for the album took place between 1977 and 1978 at Gaye's personal studios, Marvin Gaye Studios, in Los Angeles, California. The album was notable for its subject matter focusing largely on Gaye's acrimonious divorce from his first wife, #AnnaGordyGaye.
A commercial and critical failure upon its release, it was later hailed by music critics, in the years following Gaye's death, as one of Gaye's best albums.
The front cover featured a painting of Gaye dressed in a toga in a neo-Roman setting, created by artist Michael Bryan, who stated Gaye described how he wanted to be depicted on the cover. The back cover features a temple with the word "matrimony" collapsing around a mock-Rodin sculpture of a romantic couple. The fold-out illustration inside the original double album shows a man's hand reaching across to the hand of a woman's, about to give her a record. The hands are extended on a Monopoly board—with the legend JUDGMENT written on it. On the man's side are tape recorders and a grand piano; on the woman's are a house, car and ring. The scales of justice sit above the game while, from arched windows, curious observers watch.

12:45 AM EDT October 14, 2023:
Eno/Cale - "Footsteps" From the album Wrong Way Up (October 5, 1990)
Last song scrobbled from iTunes at Last.fm
Back when it was new--and I was 25 years old--I eagerly purchased this compact disc. Oh, it was a time, man. The CD was packaged in--get this (if you can: most people today I would assume don't know what it had been)--a longbox. A theft deterrent then, and a music geek collectible now. Funny the way things transform, sometimes.
So. It being that time, I didn't know as much about Brian Eno or John Cale then as I do now, but I still knew Here Come the Warm Jets and White Light/White Heat. And because those records had been great, I expected Wrong Way Up to be pretty awesome.
Did I know then that the 3-1/2-minute revolution called "Sky Saw" featured Cale? Or that there was a cult album named June 1, 1974 that featured them both?
Not sure. Wise now, was I wise then?
Anyway, the excitement before the purchase turned into disappointment afterwards. This album, it did not rock, it bore no traces of Warm Jets or White Heat, and it wasn't weird at all, and I sold it and I forgot about it as quickly as possible.
Lately though, nearly 30 years later, thinner of hair, and wiser of the music, man, I've been on an Eno jag, and I came across a review of the album on Pitchfork that suggested the album, synthpop though it was, achieved nothing less than brilliance in its rather conflicted creation.
Hell, I hadn't even known that the artists hadn't gotten along. . . . So I figured, what *had* I known, in my judgement 30 years ago? I'd been only 25, and had probably been a little bit um, over-influenced, by hardcore punk. My tastes are more sophisticated now! I could like an album that maybe wasn't so manic. Really I could. And shit, everything I've been doing for the last month was all about what a fucking genius Eno was. . . Maybe I'd been hasty in my dismissal of WWU back then, simply because it didn't sound like "Third Uncle," or "I Heard Her Call My Name." 'Cause hell, on reflection, thinking about it in 2019, in the midst of a Brian Peter George St John le Baptiste de la Salle Eno freakout, neither does "Luftschloss."
Goddamn, then, let's try it again, I thought. So last week, I bought a CD copy off Discogs. Received it yesterday, listened to it on the way into work this morning, and ... it's unabashedly awful.
It's lame, predictable, and without a trace of the genius which otherwise marks both men's work. You're tempted to say a few things, although you should probably resist the urges. You're tempted to say that it was a case of men outside the times attempting foolishly to sound like them, but that's wrong. 1990 had no great rush of synthpop albums.
1990 was about Jane's Addiction; Jane's Addiction, and Happy Mondays and Sonic Youth's major label debut. Nobody was making synthpop. That these two major artists felt like going there, I don't know, it's odd, it's strange, it's fucked up.
You're also tempted to say, maybe, if you're not that familiar with the facts, that this was the work of giants who had exhausted their creative energies prior to its making, young lions become old farts. But, of course, that's ridiculous. Five years after this mistake of a record, Eno would record Nerve Net, which showed him as able as his youngself to stretch things out. And if you want pop, shit, Eno made Another Day on Earth in 2005, as he was approaching 60, and that is a brilliant, quirky, intelligent pop record, even if it's not as much like M83 as I might prefer.
Wrong Way Up is a detour into mediocrity. Definite, and puzzling, that is.
It all goes to show many things, perhaps most importantly--and I swear I'm not looking to trash Pitchfork specifically here--that if an artist known for making good things makes something crappy, there will always--always--be somebody around to tell people that, fuck the facts, it is in fact pretty good.
There's also the reminder given that I had the suss of the thing down back in 1990. I like to think of myself as smarter now, wiser if you have to go there, and I was prepared to second-guess myself, and take a lesson from it too, but at least in this case, me and the version of myself that existed three decades ago are smack dab in agreement. There's a stolidity about that I find appealing, but maybe, just maybe, there's also a disappointing inability to evolve.
Funny the way things don't transform, sometimes.

What year did vinyl records stop
Tumblr media
Vinyl records have undoubtedly made a remarkable resurgence in recent years, charming music enthusiasts with their warm tones and nostalgic appeal. However, as technology continues to advance, many wonder when vinyl records ceased production and what the future holds for this iconic format. In this blog article, we'll take a journey through the 14 types of vinyl records and explore the significant turning point that marked the end of an era.
1. 33⅓ RPM LP (Long Play) Records:
LP records, playing at 33⅓ revolutions per minute, were the backbone of vinyl collections. They offered extended playtime and became the standard format for full-length albums.
2. 45 RPM Records:
Operating at a faster speed of 45 RPM, these records were commonly used for single releases, featuring one song on each side.
3. 78 RPM Records:
A relic of the past, 78 RPM records were prevalent in the early 20th century and played a crucial role in preserving music history.
4. 12-inch Singles:
With better sound quality and longer playtime, 12-inch singles were ideal for dance tracks, remixes, and special editions.
5. 10-inch Records:
Falling between 7-inch singles and 12-inch LPs in size, 10-inch records were used for early EP releases and special projects.
6. Picture Discs:
Picture discs featured visually stunning designs embedded into the vinyl, making them visually captivating collectibles.
7. Colored Vinyl Records:
Breaking away from traditional black vinyl, colored vinyl records were released in various hues, appealing to collectors and enthusiasts.
8. EP (Extended Play) Records:
EP records allowed artists to showcase more tracks than singles but fewer than full-length albums.
9. Box Sets:
Box sets combined multiple vinyl records, often including complete discographies, unreleased tracks, and bonus content.
10. 180-gram Vinyl Records:
Known for their superior sound quality, 180-gram vinyl records offered enhanced audio fidelity.
11. Split Vinyl Records:
Split vinyl records featured two different artists or bands on each side, offering a diverse listening experience.
12. Promotional Vinyl Records:
Promotional vinyl records were distributed to industry insiders and DJs before official releases.
13. Gatefold Records:
Gatefold records had fold-out covers, providing more space for artwork, lyrics, and additional content.
14. Test Pressings:
Test pressings were preliminary copies of vinyl records produced for quality control before mass production.
Now, the question arises: when did vinyl records stop being produced? The decline of vinyl records began in the late 1980s and early 1990s, as digital formats like CDs gained popularity. During this time, many major record labels shifted their focus to CDs, and vinyl production reduced significantly. However, vinyl never completely disappeared, as some independent labels and niche genres continued to release vinyl records for dedicated enthusiasts.
Conclusion
In conclusion, while vinyl records experienced a decline in the past, their enduring charm and authenticity have led to a resurgence in recent years. As the world of music evolves, it's evident that vinyl records have found their place, captivating new generations and preserving the nostalgia of the past for years to come. So, whether you're a seasoned vinyl collector or just beginning your vinyl journey, there's no better time to embrace the unique magic of vinyl records.

The Ledge #569: Jeremy Porter's Teenage Kicks
When I conceived the “52 Weeks of Teenage Kicks” project late last year one of the first things I did was to contact artists that I considered friends of the show. I’ve been blessed over the years to have some wonderful musicians regularly send me their latest projects.
One of those friends was Jeremy Porter, leader of Jeremy Porter & The Tucos. For almost the entire time I’ve been producing The Ledge, Porter has provided me with fabulous music, and has also introduced my show to many of his fellow musician friends.
It was honestly no surprise when Porter responded that he was indeed interested in contributing a version of “Teenage Kicks”, but I was blown away by his overall plans with the tune. Tonight’s episode is the world premiere of his cover, which will be officially released next Friday (5/26) on his bandcamp page. While the track will be a “name your price”, proceeds from those who do the right thing and pay for the track will go to the Detroit-based charity, Hater Kitty Army, led by Sue Summers. “Hater Kitty Rescue Army is a neighborhood cat haven on Detroit's Eastside," Summers explains. "We have been serving abandoned cats for the past nine years by providing food, shelter, spay and neutering, and re-homing the ones we can.”
What is especially gratifying about this project is that Summers is not only a friend of Porter’s but a huge fan of The Undertones! “(They) were one of the first punk bands I saw in concert, at a tiny neighborhood theater that hosted all ages shows," Summers recently recalled. "The song 'Teenage Kicks' has always been a favorite teenage anthem of mine and still remains timeless.”
Besides Porter’s fabulous cover, tonight’s show is a hodgepodge of new and old favorites. Included is a tribute of sorts to Big Stir Records, as earlier this week they had a big announcement of six new signing to their label. It seems like a pretty obvious idea to devote a set to these artists, which include Graham Parker, The Spongetones, The Cyrkle, Flashcubes, Arthur, Alexander, and Sparkle*Jets UK.
Sprinkled throughout the show are some of the other submitted versions of “Teenage Kicks” to remind everybody that I’m always looking for new covers. If you are a musician, or have any contact with artists that could record their own take on the classic, please contact me!

Weekly BillCharts Top 50 - 2023 Week 16
Studio Ghibli finally notches a #1 with a soundtrack song from one of its weirdest movies, Pom Poko, while Nina Simone and Christine and the Queens debut new hits. Also, Rihanna visits the Top 5 for the first time in 4 years, and Bright Eyes make their first debut in the Top 10.
More after the break.
Joys of Spring from Pom Poko's soundtrack moves 3-1 in its 3rd week, giving the animation studio their very first #1. This now outpeaks Only Yesterday's cover of The Rose, which debuted #2 a few months ago. The song has been able to cater to the current seasonal vibe by providing an uplifting and joyous anthem, bringing much-appreciated levity after the charts' more melancholic feel of the start of this year. The song also boasts one of the longer rises to #1, having taken 3 weeks to hit the summit of the charts.
Below, Lana Del Rey and Bleachers' Margaret rises 5-2 in its 3rd week, sealing this song as the biggest hit for both artists in ages. Though Snow on the Beach featured Lana and had a solid run, her contribution to that song was fairly limited. Lana's last true hit as a lead artist was Summertime Sadness from 2016. However, Lana did have a brief chart run with Born To Die, Lust For Life and Dark Paradise in 2017; though none of those songs charted for longer than 4 weeks. Bleachers, meanwhile, haven't charted any hits since 2017, though Jack Antonoff did have some success earlier this year with fun's We Are Young, though the song didn't chart high for too long unfortunately.
Sinnerman by Nina Simone debuts at #3, marking the late artist's first song to chart since Stars back in 2016. That song had been fueled by an appearance in Bojack Horseman's season 3 finale. This song, meanwhile, was featured at the end of David Lynch's Inland Empire. The song clocks in at over 10 minutes, yet another song to defy common wisdom in becoming a hit despite its length.
Christine and the Queens and 070 Shake's True Love debuts at #4, marking the french artist's 2nd single for his new album, PARANOÏA, ANGELS, TRUE LOVE. 070 Shake also matches her previous peak: the Tame Impala remix of Guilty Conscience which debuted at #4 back in August 2020. This song also marks the 2nd collab between both artists: Body by 070 Shake had peaked at #28 last year despite charting for 6 weeks. Rounding out the Top 5, Rihanna's Don't Stop The Music vaults 28-5, giving her a first Top 5 song since 2019 when both Princess of China with Coldplay and Lemon with NERD both landed in the spot.
Below, Lanterns on the Lake's String Theory dips 1-6, Ethel Cain's Sun Bleached Flies holds 7-7 in its 26th consecutive week in the Top 10, Tim Janis' Amazing Grace falters 4-8, and Ethel Cain's Thoroughfare rolls down 8-9. Bright Eyes' Lua debuts #10, marking the band's first song to ever chart. The song was featured on the Life is Strange 1 soundtrack.
Outside the Top 10, Bruce Springsteen's Born To Run debuts at #14, Debby Friday and Uñas' I GOT IT vaults 31-15, Andrea Bocelli & Ariana Grande's E più ti penso lands at #16, Sam Roberts Band' Picture Of Love shutters in at #18, and Syd Matters' Obstacles charts at #22.
Below is the full Top 50.

If you want to hear quintessential “emo music,” listen to @Silverstein’s 2005 album “Discovering the Waterfront.” It’s so #emo I unconsciously start putting on girl pants when it’s playing.
”Girl Washow Number” was inspired by “BedRock” by Young Money, a popular song that featured @nickiminaj and @drake (IG @champagnepapi) back when they were up and coming artists, and was the 2nd track of the N3RD EP, released during senior year of #highschool.
With the bridge melody of “Girl Washow Number” being the catchiest part of the song, the original plan was to use it as the intro. Unfortunately that idea wasn’t working out, so that melody was ultimately used for the bridge instead.
After the brief intro, which establishes the key and tempo, it jumps straight into the chorus, which stems from the idea that you should start every song with the catchiest part. That way, you have a better chance of hooking the listener, which is surprisingly difficult to do.
My sister, who was around 14 at the time, did the “shake it up lollipop” vocals. She did a stellar job in this song and “Emily (Song 9).”
Finally learned how to use EQ on all tracks around this time. You can hear vocals, hi-hat and bass utilizing their specific frequencies. It wasn’t EQed perfectly, nor are the songs I’m working on today, but it’s a vast improvement over previous songs.
The N3RD EP was the start of a new chapter in life. Out with the #poppunk inspired songs, in with the party songs inspired by 3OH!3, LMFAO, Black Eyed Peas, Kesha, etc. Party songs were really popular at the time. Like “Jenny (Song 1),” the N3RD EP caught a lot of attention in high school and the surrounding #MetroDetroit area, which was really fun to experience (excerpt from post 10).
Creatively, the goal for the N3RD EP (songs 10 - 15) was to let loose and have fun. No limitations. If a song needed a rap section, I’d rap. Girl at school was cute? She would be added to the lyrics. Song needed a metalcore inspired breakdown? It would be added (excerpt from post 10).
I can only imagine what it’s like to be one of those pop artists with multiple hit songs in their discography. The high that you get from uploading a creation onto the internet and getting praise from hundreds of people (both acquaintances and strangers) is difficult to describe. The only feeling that compares, at least in my opinion, is being physically intimate with someone who you’re in love with, and who loves you back. The reception of the N3RD EP in Metro Detroit was intoxicating at the time (excerpt from post 10).

1. Reflection on a Social Medium: Bandcamp
Bandcamp is a music-based platform, somewhat of a streaming platform but is not the sole purpose. The purpose of Bandcamp is to discover new music, almost an social media for discovering music, showing vinyls or music you have purchased from this platform in a digital feed, and having a profile that shows a collection of your music you have discovered or saved or that you have bought. I am a user of bandcamp myself, as my music taste relies primarily on more niche or now mainly obsolete musical genres, such as new wave (1980s), synth pop, or genres less mainstream like goth music. I haven't found much use in Bandcamp though in honesty, being not that interested in social media personally, as I prefer to find my music through word of mouth, finding music at record stores or records I am given, or recommendations from family or people who are established members of subcultures like goth or new wave, or new romantics. I think there is potential in Bandcamp, for those who are music obsessed and who enjoy discovering music, as well as having a social media element attached to this process.

Something I did this week: Aggie Album Associates Meeting: Darkwave
I was really nervous going into this club where they were listening to Black Celebration by Depeche Mode from the genre I nominated, Darkwave, because I was worried people would strongly dislike it or either hate it. But, I was pleasantly surprised to see others enjoyed it, a lot. Perhaps not as much as I enjoy it as a hardcore Depeche Mode devotee, as most cannot compare to me in that sense, but liked it a lot and was really impressed by what they had heard in the album. It made me very happy, to see something special and central to my life, Depeche Mode, appreciated by others, and seeing what I see in that music.

Response to Non-Assigned Reading: Why Do We Own Lab Animals?
This article discusses the viewpoints on animals being tested on or medicinal or other purposes, for the supposed benefit of human safety. This is something that stands out to me, purely from a disagreement standpoint. Personally, I follow a plant based diet, and have in some variation since I was 12. I progressed from stopping drinking milk when I was 12, to pescetarianism and still not drinking milk when I was 14, to vegetarianism when I was 16, to veganism when I was 18, as well as adopting a pro cruelty-free viewpoint. I've always been against animal testing in some capacity. Specifically cosmetics, as someone who is passionate about cosmetology and was previously training to become a cosmetologist, I believe beauty should be ethical and free of animal testing, there is no need, in my viewpoint to test on animals for cosmetics, or medicines, to commit cruel and harmful tests on living creatures. If we have any doubt at all that this product or medicine is unsafe for humans, it should not be produced or should be altered accordingly without animal testing.

Something I did this week:
This week I've been pondering in depth the 1980s music revivals that have been occurring, whether it be through TikTok or a song's inclusion on a tv show, like Kate Bush's Running Up That Hill for example. For me it's been a issue, in the sense that while some people will discover a song and continue listening to it and explore the artist more, most will briefly be into the song, which will become a trend and then ultimately be forgotten. I am thinking of a specific example when considering this phenomenon though. Precisely, the song Enjoy The Silence by Depeche Mode being a part of trend on TikTok, and song Never Let Me Down Again having a revival due to tv show The Last of Us featuring the song in a episode. I have conflicting views on the matter. For context I am a passionate, devoted fan of Depeche Mode, for almost three years since I was 16 and this band is my all-time favorite artist, that is of great importance and emotional significance to me, and that plays a large role in my life that cannot be underestimated and diminished. I feel that while sharing this music, does allow some new listeners, it makes the song into a trend, where people will quickly use the song for trendiness, but not appreciate it's artistic depth and just how musically innovative the music can be, and instead just use it to get views on a video, which is issue for me, one that is caused by TikTok that I do not agree with. It makes songs, incredible songs, just reduced to an option for money or fame, which is not what this music, not just necessarily Depeche's, but is not what any music is intended for.
5. Two Quotes:
Fake Pictures of People of Color Won't Fix AI Bias:
The issue that these technologists are looking to fix is a critical one. AIs are riddled with defects, unlocking phones for the wrong person because they can’t tell Asian faces apart, falsely accusing people of crimes they did not commit, and mistaking darker-skinned people for gorillas. These spectacular failures aren’t anomalies, but rather inevitable consequences of the data AIs are trained on, which for the most part skews heavily white and male—making these tools imprecise instruments for anyone who doesn’t fit this narrow archetype.
Layoffs Broke Big Tech's College Elite:
In recent months, many former interns and recent grads have found themselves among the thousands of people laid off at the major tech companies. That has prompted many soon-to-be grads like Xie, who once assumed they’d easily slide into employment at one of tech’s marquee names, to rethink the value of these companies, their own prospects, and in some cases, what they want from their careers.

The ‘Enshittification’ of TikTok
Or how, exactly, platforms die.
WIRED
This article discusses Tik Tok's use of the recommendation system it uses for the app's For You Page. I was excited to see this article, as I have had my deep issues with TikTok, in a philosophical sense, and won't use it. I think the app promotes a lot of misinformation, as well as doesn't promote good content in general, focused on deep topics, almost surface level in its content matter and promotes creater's who are lacking education, intelligence, or integrity, which creates a toxic app culture, at least for me, and I think it is quite harmful for youth. Now, I have felt this way since the app originated when I was 14, and tried it briefly twice then never used it again, and I enjoyed seeing this article promote a view of TikTok similar to my own on it.

Rolling Stone, Trump Says He's Entitled to a Revenge Tour if He Wins in 2024
I have many thoughts about this, too many to fit into this post. As someone who is fiercely Liberal, and despises Trump and the current Republican party with everything in my being, my views on him often range from a mix of "How can anyone even still support this idiot?" or "How does the Republican party become increasingly popular despite everything we know?" As well as everyone else involved with the Trump stratosphere, don't even get me started on Marjorie Taylor Green, perhaps one the most unintelligent, crazy people in politics currently.  It's just another example of why the Republican party is corrupted, none of this would be an issue if we had not let Trump into office for four years. But what does that say about our country? While amazing things legally are coming for Trump that, I, am looking forward to, it still says a lot that he's even considering running again, and that there may be people who will support him. In my eyes, he cannot win again. His winning in 2016 represents how deeply racist, homophobic, transphobic, ableist, xenophobic, misogynistic, and many other things that are embedded in America, and his being president again will take this to a whole other level of extremeness, one that is incredibly dangerous and needs to be prevented at all costs, for the sake of women, and every other minority group.
