Today we are pleased to introduce: Federal Balancing Act
If you check out one new thing today (besides green beer), make it our new Federal Balancing Act interactive budget simulation at FederalBalancingAct.com.
After many months of work with our partner, the Bipartisan Policy Center in Washington, D.C., Federal Balancing Act today is making its debut to shine light on the federal budget like no other free online tool out there.
Here’s why it matters now:
The presidential election has put very little attention on fiscal policy and the federal budget, yet the deficit is projected at $544 billion (if the Congressional Budget Office is accurate on its prediction) and will be on the rise for the first time since 2009.
Taxpayers are hustling right now to get their returns finished. Wouldn’t you like to know in an easy glance how your federal tax dollars are being spent and see if you could do it better?
Apathy in government continues to grow, and technology through tools like Balancing Act has the power to get citizens engaged across the country, reduce voter apathy, and educate the public.
A one-week crowd-funding campaign kicks off today to pay for the companion Federal Taxpayer Receipt, with the goal of launching the tool by April 4, in plenty of time for Tax Day. The Federal Taxpayer Receipt will give citizens an approximation of where their individual tax dollars went, broken down by federal program. Don’t we all deserve a receipt for our tax dollars paid?
Take a look at what you can learn about the federal budget on Balancing Act today and tell us what you think in the comments here.

The federal budget deficit is set to drop below $1 trillion in 2013 for the first time in a few years; this report was released by the Congressional Budget Office (CBO), a non-partisan organization. However, the United States will still have to borrow about 24 cents on every dollar that it spends. The US is set to have a deficit of $845 billion, which is a drop from the $1.1 trillion deficit it had in 2012. The major issue reported is that the economy is projected to grow only 1.4% this year if he sequestration set to take place on March 1st is not handled. The same report by the CBO showed that by 2015 the deficit can dip as low as $430 billion, a ballpark amount that we have not seen since 2008. These numbers, however, are an indicator of what can be if the laws are upheld in Washington. With the current stalemates, and new laws being proposed, it is still difficult to accurately predict what the future of our economy holds.
