I just wanted to share this. Little Lucy was born a month ago and breastfeeding has really been a challange. My milk didn't even come in until 5 days after leaving the hospital; a whole week after she was born. I spent a few of those days crying with Lucy because she was hungry and getting nothing. The nurses had said "Nothing but the breast." So, I was afraid to give formula and I felt betrayed by my body, but I'm lucky and I have a wonderful support system with my family and friends. They assured me that no matter what the nurses said "fed is best." I still have trouble shaking the feeling of inadequacy when I can't produce enough for her, she is still hungry, and I have to make her a formula bottle. Or when I drop her off at her GG's house before school and i dont have any milk to leave so its formula all day. They should tell you its not easy. They should tell you it isn't always going to be the "beautiful natural" experience that people say it is. You have to work at it and sometimes its gonna hurt in more ways than one.... And most importantly ITS OKAY IF YOU CAN'T. ITS OKAY IF YOU DONT WANT TO. That doesnt make you a bad mom. As long as your baby is fed and happy that is literally all that matters. Anyway... Body autonomy is the most important message. We need breast feeding awareness because people who do it are getting harassed for it in public. This does not mean that parents who don't participate are wrong or bad... Unless you don’t have access to clean/safe water, formula feeding is safe and will provide your child with the sustenance they need to survive. This is coming from a formula fed baby (me!) and a mom who formula fed her child (me again!). Oh & adoption or just prefering not to BF are also reasons to formula feed!
