If you are considering to join the Fediverse (often also refered to as Mastodon) and don't know where to get started, here is good non-technical guide for newbies.
In terms of my personal interests, I can say that in the Fediverse there are also authors, artists/illustrators, editors, reading fans and other bookish folks, goths, vegans, pagans, modern witches … There are also many activists for social justice and environmental/climate protection, as well as journalists and other people who write about political issues.
Here are the main advantages of the Fediverse: ✅ It's not owned by one big company, but dezentralized. ✅ No ads (That is, only personal ads by small businesses, artists etc. not by big companies) ✅ No algorithms (Everything is shown chronologically.) ✅You can put clickable hyperlinks into your posts. ✅ You can easily integrate ALT-text into pictures (which is common practice there.) ✅ You can add content warnings to your posts (and you should) ✅ Trolls, spammers, scammers, bigots, extremists etc. can be reported easily and will be blocked by admins. ✅ You can add a small video or up to four images to a post. ✅ Depending on the instance that you choose, you can write short or longer texts (for instance on mastodon.social up to 500 letters per post, on pagan.plus 5000 letters). You can also do threads. ✅ You can easily follow hashtags, so use them. ✅ You can filter words or hashtags, so that respective posts are not shown to you, or only with a warning (you can choose in the settings) ✅You can choose how you want to present a post: Publicly, semi-publicy, only for followers or as a personal message to a single person or to a few people. ✅ You can comment and share posts of others, if their post is public. ✅There are lots of instances in the Fediverse. Some are about a region, others about a certain topic, for instance for queer folks, literature, IT or else.

In one of your recent posts you mentioned mastodon. I've been thinking of trying it out but I'm a bit overwhelmed by the amount of different servers. Which one would you recommend? Preferably ones that are trans and autistic friendly?
oh wonderful! always glad to help someone try something new.
some general info, before we start. for you and anyone else who may be reading this:
mastodon servers aren't isolated from each other. it's like how t-mobile and verizon are different phone networks but can call and text each other. it's also harder for larger servers to moderate their user base well, since the vast majority aren't run by businesses/professionals, just individuals. this aspect is similar to forums and discord. and so, pick whichever server you want based mainly on the server's rules and moderation! to be clear, i DO NOT recommend mastodon.social for the above reasons.
with that out of the way, here's my server recs!
if you take my word for it, you can assume they're all well moderated, LGBTQ+ friendly, and staunchly anti-fascist lol. that being said, always be sure and read the about and rules pages on any server before joining! i recommend reading through the rules of multiple servers even if you decide on just one, so you can get a better feel for how things work.
first, the three servers i have accounts on:
tech.lgbt / on the larger side, but really nice. main user base is lgbt people in the tech field (shocker) and a significant amount of furries (the overlap in this venn diagram is Huge) but you do not have to be one of those things or post that content to sign up there whatsoever!
cutie.city / smaller and super chill lgbtq+ run server, lots of general posting, cute pics, artists, etc. very easy to talk to, and very friendly! highly recommend this server if you are just starting out and feeling things out.
urusai.social / cool and friendly fandom focused server, mainly focused on animanga, light/web novels, e. asian dramas, video games, etc. it has a sister server (sakurajima.moe) you can also check out.
here's a few servers i'm not personally on (yet) but that i have friends on, have read the rules for, and have seen are well moderated:
mastodon.art / on the larger side, and is the main mastodon server artists and creators of all kinds join! friendly, with lots of fun events run by the main mod.
strangeobject.space / super small instance, really chill.
fandom.ink / another fandom focused server, but much more general and not so heavily focused on e. asian media.
honorable mentions that i have mutuals from but dunno much about personally: floss.social / mstdn.games / socel.net / queer.party
if you want to follow people who aren't on your server, all you have to do is place their account url into the search bar of your server and follow from there. (there's other ways to do this, but that's for another post, this one's long enough already). for accounts to follow after signing up, i recommend:
FediTips / nice account with tips for new users
FediFollows / run by the same person, they post follow friday lists of cool accounts to follow.
Curator / the admin for mastodon.art. boosts cool art a lot and has events (run through hashtags) that lots of people join, so you can find new artists
Hashtags / this isn't a specific account. on mastodon you can follow entire hashtags, similar to the way you can here, but better. it's one of the easiest and best ways to find new content and new people to follow.
Also, after signing up, your server will have a /directory page where you can easily find more people to follow!
once you're signed up, be sure to set up your profile, make an introduction post (and tag it with #introduction, hashtags are the best way to find people, remember), and have fun!
if you'd like to learn more about mastodon (either casually, or in depth) AllThingsTech and Fedi.Tips are great sites to do so! and you're free to ask me whatever you'd like about it as well, even if it's a "small" question.
P.S. - sorry for the long response, i hope it wasn't too overwhelming! i wanted to give more info not just for you but for anyone else who may be interested or confused.
TL;DR: the instances i linked are great to join! just look at the links, lol
#ask#ky speaks#mastodon#fediverse#im viralvulpes on those three instances btw feel free to follow me as well!#EDIT 04/2025: clarification that the info about some of these instances has changed over time this post is not Recent#and also im not super active on there anymore#but thats cause im generally active on less socmed overall not bc mastadon is a bad or boring place

glancing on twitter for a post someone links to and finding that a bunch of your friends are using it almost exclusively is... a weird feeling?
i'm always going to be sour about the state of modern social media. i think some are worse than others, and i'm especially bitter about ones that try to replicate the tumblr format but maintain the restrictive NSFW content rules. but twitter...
i don't know. i knew i'd lose a lot of mutuals when i left it for good. it was the right move; twitter was stressful, and its algorithm makes it more of a cesspit than it might be otherwise. not even getting into the absolute piece of shit who currently owns it. i hope he gets hit by one of his fucking polygonal trucks.
maybe i'm still sensitive from 2018. when i got banned from tumblr around the nsfw purge, it stung to have a lot of people not... leave it. people who were my friends. i wanted solidarity, but you can't really ask that of people when it comes to social media, because they're all so different and fill such specific needs. but it did feel dismissive. maybe that's the bpd talking. a lot of times it's the bpd talking, in general.
when i got banned from twitter after that, i already had a second one to move to full-time. that time was absolutely mass-reporting, but i didn't want to fight it. i was tired. being on the forefront of discourse was exhausting.
but this time, i left twitter of my own volition. the "post rationing" was what broke me, but that being walked back didn't make me want to return, because i'd been gearing up to do it anyway. it felt like such a toxic place to be. people are still there, though. sometimes they're only there. or mostly. and why not? you can still post NSFW. all your friends are there. why wouldn't you stick around?
some part of me tries to chalk it up to a moral failing on their part, but. that's not it. i'm not better for still using tumblr. so what is it, really? well, it is the bpd: i feel left out. like i left a party to sit on the lawn but everyone else is still inside. it's a me thing, it's no one else's issue to deal with, but the nature of how bpd works means it twists me up inside nonetheless. do i compromise my personal morals to return to twitter? or do i stick it out and stay only here and on aethy? does it even fucking matter at this point?
i wish it was easier to move people to the fediverse. i really do. but if you've been on the 'net long enough, sites like twitter and tumblr and all their derivatives are some degree of intuitive. the fediverse isn't. you can sand down as many sharp edges as you like, but it's always going to look too complex for most people to even try. feditips can help, but only so much, and it's a lot of reading.
why trial and error a new thing when the old thing works fine? when all your friends are still there? i'd have jumped ship from discord ages ago, but all the competition kind of fucking sucks, and all my friends are still on discord, so genuinely, why bother?
i hate the modern internet. give me 2012 tumblr back. give me myspace back. let me use livejournal when livejournal was still good. sure, there's dreamwidth now, but no one's on it.
... it's loneliness, really. it always is. feeling left out, feeling unwanted; these are things my brain loves to force on me. no amount of rational thought can dispel them entirely. i try, but. it's hard.
i guess i'll think on it. my twitter still exists. i just feel like trying to go back would be making a mistake, or if nothing else, people whose opinions matter to me might be disappointed. maybe i'll get over this and not think about it again. i don't know.

Fedi.Tips – An Unofficial Guide to Mastodon and the Fediverse
See on Scoop.it - Arquitecturas digitales del aprendizaje para una educación 4.0

An unofficial guide to using Mastodon and the Fediverse
Oskar Almazan's insight:
The aim of Fedi.Tips is to help all kinds of people use Mastodon and the Fediverse. This guide is entirely unofficial, I don’t have any connections to any of the developers or organisations that run Fedi servers or create Fedi software.

If you want, you can move your Mastodon account from one instance (server) to another.
Moving lets you take your followers, follows and some settings with you.
1. Create a new account on the instance you want to move to, but DO NOT delete the old account.
2. Log into your NEW account, go to Edit Profile > Moving From A Different Account, click on "create an account alias" and follow the instructions.
3. Log into your OLD account, go to Edit Profile > Move To A Different Account, click on "configure it here" and follow the instructions.
4. On your OLD account, go to Preferences > Import And Export > Data Export and download the settings and follows lists.
5. On your NEW account, go to Preferences > Import And Export > Import and upload the lists you just downloaded in the previous step.
After doing all these, your old account will redirect to the new one, and your followers will transfer automatically (with a short delay).

The difference between BlueSky and the Fediverse, and why I prefer the Fediverse:
🦋 BlueSky is designed to give corporations and wealthy people full control of the network. All of its traffic has to flow through expensive-to-run corporate relays.
:Fediverse: The Fediverse is designed to give ordinary people control of the network. All of its traffic flows directly from one cheap-to-run server to another.

lol... so streut man gesundes Unwissen. Gap ist für Friendica ein genauso großes Thema, wie für den Rest des Fedivers. Nur, weil man an etwas glaubt, weiß man es nicht. https://mstdn.social/@feditips/105363100507902240

I've been using Mastodon a lot lately. It's like if Twitter and Reddit had a baby. It's a decentralized, federated platform and people host their own instances/servers. Federation means that these different instances can interact with (or "talk to") each other (Your instance can block different instances and the user can also block an instance domain). Think of it like email: you have different providers like Gmail, Protonmail, Outlook, Hotmail, etc., but you can still email anyone even if they signed up with a different provider.
It's also a part of the Fediverse, which is a network of sites that federate with each other. Mastodon is the most popular one but there's also Pixelfed, PeerTube, Misskey, etc.
There *are* bad instances out there, so you often have to look for a good, well-moderated instance that will take crack down on any problematic content. I personally joined tech.lgbt and elekk.xyz and I'm very happy with them.
Good resources:
https://davidwolfpaw.com/getting-started-on-mastodon/ (They actually host tech.lgbt)
https://github.com/joyeusenoelle/GuideToMastodon/
https://mstdn.social/@feditips - Fantastic account that posts tips for Fediverse users.
https://a.rathersafe.space/@fediblock lists problematic instances to avoid. mastodon.social, the official Mastodon instance, has an extensive blocklist that many instances base their own blocklist on. The tag #Fediblock is also used to warn others of problematic instances.
Sorry for completely nerding out here haha. I know that it's a bit intimidating I'm totally willing to help you out where I can
Tbh I don't know what I'm gonna do with fucking tumblr-- the fucking ban again is gonna target tags like "bitch" and "sexy" which I use (CUZ ITS FUNNY.) so idk. I liked tumblr somewhat but uhhhhh how many of my posts are gonna be flagged as explicit. Is my blog gonna get flagged?
Anyways I may end up jumping ship idk
If anyone knows of any good social medias I can start shit like this on lmk
I don't really like Twitter but maybe?
