Verbal Nouns

Verbal nouns are one of the three grammar points in Irish that I think pose significant challenge, at least as an English speaker, and someone asked me a question about them the other day so I thought I'd edit my answer a bit and post it here.

Q: I have a question about verbs, I've noticed that sometimes a verb would have a "ú" at the end of it many cases, for example when I was researching how to say "in order to do smth", I came across it In order to finish the project : Chun an tionscadal a chríochnú In order to clarify the situation : Chun an scéal a shoiléiriú Why is the verb different? I've tried finding a tense related to it but I can't find anything, how's it conjugated?

So this is called the "verbal noun". It's the same version of the verb as you use when you say "I'm [X]ing"

I'm finishing = Táim ag críochnú I'm clarifying = Táim ag soiléiriú I'm running = Táim ag rith

It's used in this situation similar to an infinitive, when you're saying "to finish" or "to clarify" there's no tense specified. And as you see there, the direct object is put before the verb and a (+ séimhiú) goes between them.

You can't always know how to form the verbal noun - there's no one rule - but there are a lot of patterns, one of them is ú which you mentioned, so most verbs ending in -(a)igh will turn into -(i)ú

críochnaigh -> críochnú soiléirigh -> soiléiriú bailigh -> bailiú

the most common pattern for one syllable that don't end in -(a)igh is -(e)adh, like

dún -> dúnadh ceap -> ceapadh bris -> briseadh

There's lot of exceptions too, so you get stuff like

ceannaigh -> ceannach cuir -> cur

And it can vary by dialect or even within a dialect as well

feic -> feiceáil (connacht), -> feiscint (munster) clois -> cloisteáil (connacht), -> cloisint (munster), -> clos (munster)

As I said, this is one of the more difficult topics in the language, and the exact ins and outs of the syntax can be quite difficult, so feel free to ask me any questions if you didn't understand something here.
