One thing that’s been really interesting to me lately is how names for animals develop and change over time and vary depending on where you live, so I thought I’d make this poll about one of my favorite species:

Cheetahs don’t roar like lions and other cats belonging to the species of Pantherinae. These roaring cats have strong muscles and vocal folds in their larynxes, allowing them to roar. The Felinae species, to which Cheetahs belong, actually purr like house-cats because their larynxes are not as developed as the ones of the Pantherinae cats. Cheetahs do whatsoever produce many other sounds including growls and chirps (between mother and cubs) as well as an explosive yelp that travels for up to 2 km. Send us a DM or drop us an email on

i didn't mind it at first, but that was beginning to get on my nerves and conscience...
✦
anywayz,
fun fact:
though there were possibly people in tawantinsuyu keeping wildcats as pets, maybe trying to domesticate them, it didn't pan out. so basically, we didn't have "cats" per say.
there was an attempt made 3,500 years ago by people in the lambayeque region to domesticate one of these wildcats.
the various native wildcats (most about the size of house cats) of South America include:
LEOPARDUS
• margay -- wampurushu
• ocelot -- chinchay , atalla puma , yantana
• andean mountain cat -- usqhullu
• pampas cat -- usqhullu
• oncilla -- tirika , kunawaru
• güiña -- kodkod
• southern tigrina -- usqhullu*
• geoffroy's cat -- usqhullu
HERPAILURUS
• jaguarundi -- tuwi puma
• cougar -- puma

Jaguarundis (Herpailurus yagouaroundi), family Felidae, found widely across the Americas, from far South TX and SE Arizona, through Mexico, Central America, and much of South America
This cat is very secretive and elusive, and rarely seen.
While working in Ecuador, with the Quichua people, I was told that they use magical portals at the base of Kapok trees to travel from one tree to another... or to the other side.
