SATURDAY MATINEE MUSIC VIDEO: The Monkees live at the Royal Albert Hall 5/19/11 (complete show) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vxW1Cdo5LTo&t=3181s It's hard to believe it's been 13 years since this auspicious event. I was the bassist-vocalist on this tour and here are a few recollections: The Monkees 45th Anniversary Tour was a commercial and critical success, even getting good reviews in Rolling Stone (whose editors historically have been Monkees-bashers). It was a touchstone reunion featuring the excellent multi-media staging work of Andrew Sandoval, deep album cuts as well as the hits, and the entire HEAD film soundtrack performed live. It would also turn out to be the last tour with Davy Jones, who died 9 months later. The tour went around England, Scotland, Canada, and across the United States, but (surprisingly) no professional film or recording was made. What survives are countless phone videos of mixed quality. Thanks to Elixir101, who gathered videos from various sources and edited this summation of the sold-out Royal Albert Hall concert, booked after Eric Clapton gave up one night of his usual May residency at the Hall so The Monkees could perform. You can read the entire set list on the Youtube caption. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vxW1Cdo5LTo&t=3181s

Last February before everything shut down for covid, I photographed @colbertlateshow writer Felipe Torres Medina for @bostonu. It was a cold shoot early on a Saturday morning but a lot of fun. SATURDAY MATINEE MUSIC VIDEO “Saturday’s Child” by The Monkees (live 2011) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iy2fcnIz9mk This performance features guitarist Wayne Avers, who has played with The Monkees in all their manifestations since 1990 (and he’s also worked with Christopher Cross, Rick Derringer, Todd Rundgren, & other notables). David Robicheau and Felipe Torres are rockin’ it in this clip, and I always enjoyed playing it. “Saturday’s Child” was the second track on The Monkees’s debut LP. It’s one part bubblegum and one part hard rock akin to The Yardbirds. The song was written by David Gates (later of Bread fame) and was first recorded by the garage pop band The Palace Guard (with Emitt Rhodes and actor-musician Don Grady) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iy2fcnIz9mk

SATURDAY MATINEE MUSIC VIDEO: Davy Jones live @ BB King NYC 2/18/12 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zr7kLPG0mnU&t=3497s Over the years, Davy Jones and band performed many times at BB King's in New York City’s Times Square. This video is a complete and definitive document and, as it turned out, it marks the last time he'd appear there before he passed away on February 29, 2012. The set includes the rarely performed Tommy Boyce song "I Love You Like I Love New York City," and an ever rarer cover of "All of Me" + at 56:00 is the much-requested "Someday Man" (written by Paul Williams for The Monkees). The sound quality of this video is very good, conveying the tight playing and vocal harmonies of the band as well as capturing a cache of Davy's comedy and stories. Hard to believe he was gone 11 days later. RIP DJ. Miss ya mate. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zr7kLPG0mnU&t=3497s

ALBUM OF THE MONTH: IF I COULD DRESS LIKE CLIVE OWEN (MUSIC FOR FILMS NOT YET MADE) https://johnnyjblairsingeratlarge.bandcamp.com/album/if-i-could-dress-like-clive-owen-music-for-films-not-yet-made
—Movie soundtracks have a language of their own. Composers and musicians supply the allure to support the atmospherics of the script and the photography. The genre known as “spy movie music” conveys intrigue, secrets, living on the edge, cheeky humor, fighting against wickedness in high places, and saving the world from terrible fates. Whether it’s James Bond or vintage film noir, one can expect an exotic template of chords and orchestrations: Like the ironic zither of THE THIRD MAN, the Anglofied harpsichord bumpers in THE AVENGERS TV show, or the staccato cello in the BOURNE movies. “Spy movie music” is often dark but scintillating, detached but empathetic to the character, even if you’ve never been “a spy.”
Over the years I’ve drawn from the “spy movie music” template, with cross-overs into surf guitar rock, classical, jazz, psychedelia, techno, and world music. Every other song on this compilation is instrumental, so it flows like a soundtrack (or one of those old Eno records—you decide). Guest artists include Bret Alexander, John Bechdel, Bil Bryant, Davy Jones (Monkees), Dan Rielly, Ron Simasek, Felipe Torres, and Chris von Sneidern. Thanks for listening—and watch your back. PS: bandcamp Friday is coming up this Friday Oct. 10/6!

SATURDAY MATINEE MUSIC VIDEO: Davy Jones – “Free: The Greatest Story Ever Told” (A Monkees Tale) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m0udT5n_q5c …Fame is a bittersweet blessing. The lyrics in this song describe David Thomas Jones’s life, told through the lens being a celebrity and a simple man. The things in life that were truly important to him made him feel “free,” yet he couldn’t deny his gifts of being “Davy Jones” the actor, singer-songwriter, and member of The Monkees—with whom he had an incredible bond. The song was written by Alan Green, who’d been in the Davy/Monkees orbit since the late 70s. This version was produced and performed by Alan with Mark Clarke and members of The Grass Roots and The Monkees touring band circa 1989. The video includes edits from a fan-made collage + newly found images + cuts from a 2008 phone video from a Mohegan Sun concert with Peter Tork in attendance. The band at Mohegan amazingly locked into the original tempo and added soaring harmonies. The master of this recording has been lost—the audio on this video is from a high quality 1st generation cassette copy and has been remastered: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m0udT5n_q5c

HAPPY BIRTHDAY to David Cassidy. As I grew up and into the world of showbiz, I grew out of shape-shifting peer-oriented "likes/dislikes” and expanded my musical vocabulary. I accepted "fresh data" and became better at recognizing great quality music, no matter who is doing it. The Partridge Family first hit when I was around 13. Back then I dismissed it as pre-teen twaddle with some OK comedy. Now when I listen to The Partridge Family, I hear A-list songwriters, recorded with the venerable Wrecking Crew, and sung by a very talented singer with great range—David Cassidy. These factors over-rule the transience of hipsterism. Cassidy had an astonishing resume as an actor, collaborator, and songwriter (his songs were covered by Asia, Cher, Heart...). In 1975 a girl died at one of his shows, which broke his heart and added another reason for him to take a leave from “teen idol-dom.” Everything he did post-Keith Partridge (records, theatre, TV shows) was of high quality and reached people around the world. He came into my professional circle around 1998, and I'm grateful to have had at least a few times with him, on stage and off. He was a very empathetic person who, despite his life experience with “celebrity,” seemed at odds with the trappings of fame. I'm in 12-Step Recovery and we all prayed he'd find the tools to overcome. On this note, here's a video of the last time Davy Jones and David Cassidy performed together (who knew?), and I'm glad to have been a part of that... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iDb4zDaBVpo Meanwhile, HB DC and thank you for your voice.
