Wrought ironwork surrounds a family plot. What's really crazy is this tree probably grew inside the fence after this family was laid to rest.

9. things you said when i was crying
Swimming in the ocean off Southampton, with Prince’s beach house dominating the horizon, is transporting, almost surreal, until the first faceful of salt water. At that point, it’s not too different from swimming at any other beach.
The third wave to break in Philip’s face finally spurs him to return to dry land and save himself from salt poisoning. He swims, then wades, to shore. The sandpipers scurrying through the surf scatter at his approach; it’s more attention than anyone else on the beach is paying him. Wendy’s sitting right on the sand, staring at the horizon and letting the ocean wash up around her legs. Scooter and Wags are trying desperately to match Sacker’s skill in skipping stones on the waves. Tuk and Rian are tossing a Frisbee with Winston and entreating him to let them bury him neck-deep in the sand. Peach is rubbing sunscreen into Kristy’s back. Victor is hitting on the hired lifeguard. Prince is tending a dozen burgers on a portable grill while Andy lounges on a nearby blanket.
Philip passes them all by, heading to the pop-up cabana just this side of the fence around the dunes. In its shade sit an army of coolers, provided by Prince’s endless but currently unseen retinue, and Taylor, in a chair they must have dragged down from the pool deck or convinced someone else to drag for them. Maybe Ben, who’s hovering at their shoulder and interrupts his own conversation with them to say “Hi, Philip.”
“Hey, Ben. Taylor.” Philip rifles through the coolers — they really should be labeled — until the water bottles turn up. He selects one, sips, swishes, and spits out that first mouthful, as discreetly as he can manage, to clear away the taste of salt. Ben and Taylor don’t seem to notice, embroiled in their hushed but animated discussion of… something. He’d guess it’s about the book in Taylor’s hands, but the title is indecipherable from this angle, even when he seats himself on a cooler, and the cover photo of an orange cat and a man with a gun explains nothing.
Taylor turns away from Ben to cast a critical eye on him and the cooler. “Not sure that’s rated as furniture.”
“I’ll replace it if it breaks.” Philip shifts his weight. Feels sturdy enough. It’ll do fine. “This take you back to those company trips to Miami?”
“Somewhat. More sedate. Fewer palm trees.”
“Definitely more sedate,” Ben says. “There was one year — most of us were staying in the Four Seasons, but Axe invited us to his house in Indian Creek for brunch on the waterfront. We’d just started eating when the seagulls came. Hundreds of them, pecking us, stealing the food off our plates and out of our hands…” He shudders. “It was Hitchcockian.”
“Was this before I joined?” Taylor asks. “I’d remember something like that.”
“No, you went on that trip, but you were still downtown that morning. You said you were following up on a connection from the night before, in that club we all went to? Doing the power breakfast thing?”
“Yes. Networking. I do remember that.”
Ben nods, obviously relieved to have it right, and heads off toward the game of Frisbee. Poor guy has no idea what conversation he’ll get pulled into there. Philip looks over at Taylor. “Networking, huh?”
“Of course. It was a business trip,” Taylor says, very evenly. He almost believes them.
“So we know how Ben remembers the not-so-good old days.” They can decide whether to take the implied bait of what about you?
Taylor sets down the book and folds their hands. “Axe had a house out here. Down the road a few miles. Bought it in 2015 and made some waves.”
“Rings a bell.” He’d been at Stanford at the time, but the headline in the Post had made it coast to coast: BEACH BUM!
“He convened a war room there once, to handle a muni-bond deal that went bad. During the afternoon, we adjourned to his piece of the beach. Someone found a football to toss around. It ended up in my hands. And my first throw must have surprised Axe, because it hit him in the face.”
Philip laughs. “How’d he take that?”
“Once he was sure he wasn’t bleeding, he complimented my spiral.”
That sentence sounds like it should keep going, but stops short. Taylor produces a pair of sunglasses from somewhere and puts them on, despite the ample shade of the cabana, and appears to be suddenly very interested in the still-expanding Frisbee game, which now includes Sacker. Only a quiet sniff and ragged exhale suggest that Philip might be wise to make himself scarce.
He doesn’t know — not in full, not for certain, not beyond the details gleaned from office gossip and that book of Wendy’s — what exactly went down between Taylor and Axe in their yearslong history, and he figures he never will. What he does know is that when they mention Axe at all, they paint him as more myth than man, preternaturally skilled in bending people, institutions, and events to his liking, even beyond what your average decabillionaire can pull off. Usually, the only part of the picture that changes is how much Taylor bent under his influence. It’s strange to hear them talk about him like they might any other former colleague. Like, maybe, someone they miss. It can only be stranger for them.
“My dad’s from Georgia,” Philip says. “Most of his family still lives down there. When I was growing up, we’d go visit them every year or two. Usually at Easter or Thanksgiving, to get the most out of trading New York weather for Brunswick.”
“The Golden Isles.”
“Yeah. Once every trip, we’d go to Barbara Jean’s for lunch. All of us took up four or five tables pushed together. Beach was maybe five minutes away, so we’d head there afterwards, and take the bread left over from the table to feed the seagulls.”
“That’s not recommended,” Taylor says, though with no bite. It’s an observation, rather than a demand that he drop everything and repent for feeding wild animals.
“They’d catch scraps in the air if we threw them high enough. They’re agile birds.”
“Sure.”
“So when some other interns at the AI Lab went to the beach one summer, I brought a bag of stale sandwich bread, torn into pieces.” Philip takes a mostly-unneeded drink to let that image hang in the air longer. “It was an hour’s drive. The water was cold. And the seagulls just watched me throw that bread and pecked the crumbs off the sand.”
“Disappointing.”
“To say the least.”
“And is this where I share my own treasured memories of childhood beach trips?”
“No, this is where I tell you the moral of the story. You can’t repeat the past. Don’t let nostalgia fool you.”
Taylor doesn’t move a muscle, but he’d swear that behind those sunglasses, they’re looking sidelong at him.
“I see,” they say. “Thank you.”

25th November 2022-Sunny day at Lakeside and home
It was great to hear Chaffinch and Carrion Crow on my Lakeside walk, and get an exciting first view for a while here of a Song Thrush on the path south of the site between it and the University of Southampton sports fields I have covered most bits of Lakeside on walks this week which is great with sweet flocks of tits flitting through the trees on the walk today I enjoyed seeing Great Tit and Blue Tit. The young Mute Swan was still present at Lakeside at lunch time, this time moved to the corner of Concorde lake from beach lake where I saw it and an adult on Monday and Tuesday. Definitive birds of my week. Great Crested Grebe, Coot and Moorhen were good to see well at Lakeside again intimately at times for the latter two and I enjoyed bright and colourful Goldfinches in the red bark bare trees out the front it’s been a good unique feature of these months this year so far noticing them in these trees as if they are keeping watch to come across onto our balcony feeders. I had a brief look at the front garden first thing to see if I could see the Dunnock again, I didn’t but possibly heard it calling from somewhere and did see a Magpie looking nice in the morning light. I took the seventh picture in this photoset of sun kissed Mallards on the gleaming Concorde lake which was so beautiful to take in at Lakeside.
I liked seeing this morning and at lunch time the creature in the second picture in this photoset, a little slug I believe. Carrot, teasel seed heads, rosemary and daisy were plant highlights on my lunch time walk, and it is quite magical how a familiar ball of mistletoe along the northern path in a tree blocked by the thick vegetation of the spring and summer months has gradually become more and more visible as the leaves lessened. It is a standout sight across Lakeside now which is quite a symbol of winter months and I loved seeing it in all its glory with rich colour against the strong blue sky this lunch time I took the sixth picture in this photoset of it. The shaggy scalycap in the southern fenced off area and bright red rose hips which the third picture in this photoset shows and lavender in the front garden were nice sights at lunch time also, as was the exotic sunset of a flower the one in the tenth picture in this photoset which caught my eye in the flower bed area out the front on the way back from Lakeside looking excellent in the sun. I saw a Yellow Dung fly and great bits of yarrow here which was nice too.
There were stunning views at Lakeside today. The fishing jetties at the west of Concorde lake tipped from being precariously holding excess water on my last few walks to being covered by the water of the swelled lake now which was fascinating to see, I took a picture showing this and tweeted this on Dans_Pictures tonight. Whilst bare branches came to the fore this lunch time, I loved taking in ripe yellow and orange autumnal colour and smashing green leaves too as the landscape was awakened so well by the strong winter sun. It was a good day for sun through trees shots. An erect crane (of the mechanical kind) made an interesting sight from home and from Lakeside today there have been a few in a place visible from my room but I’d not seen one so high above the landscape. It was great to enjoy beautiful trees out the front on the way to Lakeside today too and autumnal and other colour in trees out the back. I took the first picture in this photoset of a view out the back showing the crane a beautiful blue sky scene throughout today, and the fourth showing one of the trees out the front, fifth, eighth showing the nice sunny view of Concorde lake and ninth pictures in this photoset of views today. I hope you all have a good weekend.
Wildlife Sightings Summary: One of my favourite birds the Great Crested Grebe, Mallard, Moorhen, Coot, Mute Swan, Black-headed Gull, Collared Dove seen well from home in the lowering light of a bright day, Feral Pigeons seen nicely in the air at Lakeside, Magpie, Jackdaw nicely from home, Starling, Goldfinch, Blue Tit, Great Tit, possible Robin at Lakeside, Blackbird, Song Thrush, Yellow Dung fly, the slug and I heard Chaffinch, Carrion Crow and possibly Dunnock.

We went to Ashley Bombing Range which is in the New Forest it’s approximately 5 miles north-west of Lyndhurst and 14 miles west of Southampton. Ashley Walk Bombing Range was-used by RAF Boscombe during WW11, the whole area was fenced off so ponies and animals were safe. They used it for bouncing bombs etc. The Arrow was to help aircraft find out where to drop the bombs. The Arrow was illuminated by a diesel generator. The activities continued until 1946 but the range wasn’t fully cleared until 1948, but the Arrow remains.

Nat Turner Born October 2, 1800
Nat Turner was a renowned African-American known for leading the 1831 slave rebellion to free blacks in Southampton County, Virginia, after being subjected to slavery himself. He started a revolt among the black slave followers to free their brother on several plantations. They gained more arms and horses with each raid on plantation. Afterwards, they were accused of 50 white civilians’ death and the Virginia legislation began to target free blacks as well with a colonization bill implicating their freedom once again with sale and relocation. In their rage and fear of uprising, white Americans organized troops and attacked the blacks resulting in over 150 deaths regardless of their involvement in the slave rebellion.
Turner was born into slavery on October 2, 1800 in Southampton County, Virginia. His master Benjamin Turner named him Nat and upon his death Nat’s ownership was transferred to Benjamin’s brother Samuel. During Civil War era he was referred to as Nathaniel according to the sources. He didn’t know much about his father as he reportedly escaped from slavery when Turner was young. He spent most of his life in Southampton County, Virginia, a plantation area. The place was mostly populated by the enslaved laborers. Turner was a highly intelligent person who learned to read and write at a very young age. Moreover, he had deep religious sentiments and was often seen praying, fasting and reading bible. His spirituality enabled him to have these visions which he interpreted as messages from God. These visions had a great impact on his understanding of life and which led to his return to his owner after running away a month before. His followers labeled him ‘The Prophet’, as he often conducted baptizing services and preached bible to his fellow slaves.
In 1928, Nat Turner had a realization that he was ordained for some great purpose and later it turned out to be the freedom of his fellow salves. He started to interpret weather as a sign from God to begin revolt against their owners. In early 1831, an annular solar eclipse was seen in Virginia which Turner saw as a sign to prepare an uprising. He waited till Independence Day to strike but had to further postpone the rebellion due to his illness. Then there was another solar eclipse which quickened Turner’s plan. Thus the uprising began on August 21. The message of initiating the rebellion was communicated through songs in the village and soon around 70 black slaves gathered in the woods and from there they went on from plantation to plantation to free their enslaved brothers.
So as not to alert the enemies of their presence, they carried out their attacks through knives, hatchets, axes, and blunt objects. The assault went so far as they killed 60 white people without discrimination of age and gender. They spared the poor whites as they were treated no better than the blacks. Nat Turner was driven by the single-minded goal to free the blacks that he didn’t even mind resorting to violence. He thought it would help the whites to see the cruelty of their act of slave-holding. However, the rebellion was suppressed within two days. Turner evaded the capture by hiding out in the woods but was eventually found in a hole covered with fence rails. Upon his confession to having knowledge of rebellion, he was tried and hanged for conspiring to rebel and making insurrection on November 11, 1831.

Scattered Hearts
by literary_ink
From the day he was born, Seiji Katayama knew he was expected to grow up to be someone great. When his aspirations are crushed, along with the life scheme he'd always planned for himself, he is forced to return to Southampton, a city that will never not haunt him. From the first beating he received in a street fight, Nicholas Cox understood that his life was nothing but a burden and that if he wanted to achieve anything in life, he would have to rip and tear along the way. The lives of these two men will merge by chance, and together they may create a new symphony that will drive away the past and the nightmares. But can one hope for the future when one's fate is tied to a ship that will inevitably sink?
