Socio Cultural  Aspects of Brazil 1980s-1990s

Music

Brazil in the 1980s-1990s had a few different genres that were popular. During this era, Brazilian rock was a massive genre for the country, mostly sung in Portuguese. This is a similar style of the English rock bands we know from back in the 80s.  This massive genre was a massive hit throughout Brazil, with artists and bands from Rio de Janeiro including Gang 90, Lulu Santos, Marina, Unseoutros, Herva Doce and many more. Brazilian hip hop also started in the 80s, born out of the street parties in favela.

 Literature

During the 1980s and 1990s, Brazilian literature was mainly based with the Portuguese language. Brazilian literature had a huge variety of genres and styles, with some of the most famous books coming out of this time were The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho, Maverick by Ricardo Semler, O Analista de Bagé by Luis Fernando and many more.

 Film

Brazilian films in the 80s were heavily focused on the drama. Some of these films include ‘Bye bye Brazil’, ‘The Age of the Earth’, ‘Gaijin: Roads to Freedom’ and many more.

 Sports

In Brazil, football is the biggest sport. With their Brazilian football team dominating over the years in the World Cup, they are not a team to mess with. During the World Cup in 1982 they came 5th place for the second time.

 Main personalities

Some main personalities in Brazil during this time period was Ayrton Senna, one of the most legendary F1 drivers who changed the Formula One world forever. Ayrton won 4 driver World Championships over his career, representing Brazil and showing the world what a Brazilian can do.  He was an idol to many, including myself since I’ve been a child. Unfortunately, on the 1 May 1994, Ayrton senna passed away due to an accident in the San Marino Grand Prix. Ayrton has been an influence during his time and still is today. Many people will always remember him as the best driver in Formula One history.

 Fashion

Fashion in Brazil was very colourful and bright just like the 80s. With their oversized and bold outfits, this era of fashion was really the standout in the crowd. During this time everyone expressed their style with creativity and confidence.
