i love karna fate grand order so fucking much because in serious grail wars he’s an extremely fascinating, imposing, and badass character who just has this unique, grand air about him, he looks almost otherworldly and speaks with such purpose yet personality, and he has a huge amount of power, but he's dangerous because he does hold back until he either feels the need or is instructed to just explode everything

but nearly all the rest of the time he exists he is an autism creature in the shape of a gender man who just happens to have godly powers

he may look pretty and composed but do not be fooled. this is the glowy body horror god baby. he is a Huge Dork(tm). he never knows what to do with his face. when given the choice to wear whatever casual clothes he wants he dresses like an arts college student who just tossed on 2-3 layers of whatever was laying around on their dorm floor before heading to the nearest whole foods. his ass is the posterchild for flat fuck friday. he absorbed the meathead jock braincells from the guys he hung out with in life and during christmas he goes full unga bunga about it

in vibes alone karna is like a goofy baby albatross compared to his brother who may as well like the perfectly sleek and beautiful adult ones with the perfect eyeliner in comparison. which is ironic, because karna already has the natural makeup (also, once again, do not be fooled, arjuna is a screaming disaster on the inside, but that's a love post for another day)

i think one of my fav examples of the contrast between ~beautiful ikemen~ karna and absolutely clueless fucking loser karna is that bit in the 5th anni pv where there's that shot of him oh so cooly popping open a bottle of champagne, and he's got the bishie sparkle going on, and looks sooooooo pretty in his fancy clothes,

and then you realize

he just soaked arjuna with it, probably entirely obliviously

Just as a reminder, FGO always seems to be planning for roughly two years ahead of what's released. This time would account for seeing who/what is popular, writing the storyline and designing servants for certain future events. And since summer is about selling you your fave servants in swimsuits, hey'll take into consideration which characters are popular in 2021 when planning for summer 2023.

You can see this trend in previous summers:

Lostbelts 2 and 3 release in mid-late 2018 -> Yu-Mei Ren and Brynhildr get swimsuits in Summer 2020.

Ooku and Lostbelts 4 and 5.1 are dropped in 2019, 5.2 early 2020. LB5.1 is received very well. -> Summer 2021 features Kama, Caenis and an Atlantis heavy cast: Charlotte Corday, Achilles, Mandricardo. Sei Shonagon, from Valentines 2020, also drops.

Summer 2022 features Ibuki Douji, Proto!Merlin and Erice, all of whom debuted in some form of FGO two years prior.

Why is this important?

Well, Summer 2023 is extremely Lostbelt 6 heavy. And guess what was stupidly, ridiculously, overwhelmingly well-received and exceptionally popular in 2021, skyrocketing to be considered one of the, if not hands-down the, best FGO story chapter of all time?

Yeah. It was Lostbelt 6, Avalon le Fae.

If you thought for a single second the next summer event to be planned after LB6 dropped wasn't going to cash in on that insane popularity, I legitimately don't know what to say. You don't have to like it. You really, really don't. But there was absolutely never going to be any other outcome here.

Not sure if you answer these types of asks but I have Oberon brainrot and I was wondering how do you think Guda and Oberon would make out?

Oh I will absolutely answer this type of ask.

The answer is that they contain multitudes though. First/second ascension Oberon still acts out his prince role, he hates every second of it but he'll still play into it. Think romance movie kisses, the too-perfect-to-be true kind. Looks idyllic to onlookers! Kind of hollow for both participants.

Third ascension doesn't care, so it's a lot messier because honestly he's frustrated to be in this situation in the first place and even more frustrated to not be hating it. There's teeth, there's claws, there's also swatting the occasional bug that wanders out of his cape and into Guda's hair but that part isn't intended.

And Guda after all that? Guda's not taking any shit from either Oberons. Guda has tamed worse - have you seen their Servants? They're the epitome of "shut up and make out with me", whether it's "shut up (you're being annoying)" or "shut up (stop thinking so much)". It's not an aggressive kind of kiss, but it's insistent and it works wonders.

It sucks when your favorite character is merely an accessory or sidekick to a more popular white dude

something about fairy godmother!merlin after gudako lets it slip that she thinks cindereli's dress is gorgeous and that she'd love to try it on makes me feral

so of course, when she wakes up in the middle of the night, she's in a beautiful castle, in a beautiful dress, staring at the mirror like she can't believe it's actually her

and then comes a knock at the door, and who appears but merlin himself, dressed up and ready to escort her to the ball

and there are tons of people there, mostly background characters with little bearing on her day to day life, but some of them are also the friends and family and classmates she hasn't seen in what feels like years

randomly, servants enter her dream and get put into appropriate costumes. abby and dantes are also there the entire time as bodyguards (abby is her lady in waiting/maid and dantes is her suave mercenary friend, it's in the script that merlin never ends up giving her), mash is there as a princess from a neighboring kingdom, and oberon is ALSO there, he forced himself there because he got no invite and he heard about it from castoria, and kind of miffed he didn't hear about this first because he can also do that. it's very important to him that gudako knows that, even if he'll never do it for her, obviously

she spends the night dancing away (always making sure to check on merlin, though he doesn't dance himself), until the clock hits twelve and merlin spirits her back to a room that looks like chaldea, but there are subtle touches to it that suggest its either OG chaldea or novum chaldea with the things she's missing from her OG room that sion couldn't replicate

and he makes her some hot chocolate, mimicking a certain someone (which causes a brief lull in the conversation after which merlin mocks the man mercilessly, but in a very frenemy way, and it gets a small smile out of her as she tells him not to make fun of the dead, but she's still agreeing with him), and they talk about how fun the night was

until gudako jokes about how she didn't have a prince charming. you can't have fairy tales without prince charming, who is the princess supposed to marry??

they end up debating whether she actually didn't have one or if she just isn't a princess who needs a prince charming right now (gudako rejects the premise that she doesn't want one—why does everyone else get knight kings, she says, pointing at shirou and hakuno for artoria and charlie), and she offhandedly says that if fairy godmothers looked like him, prince charmings would be out of a job

and that—

and that catches him off guard because the very next thing she says is "maybe prince charming was the fairy godmother who helped me along the way"

and he automatically says, "i'm not sure that's how the saying goes, my lord"

but anything else he can say dies in his throat when she stands up and asks him to dance with her and how can he say no when she's smiling at him so brilliantly

"shall we, o' wizard of mine?"

"as my lord commands."

and they live happily ever after

(when morning comes, gudako wakes up to a surprise in her bed. she figures out pretty quickly that he's just pretending to sleep, so she kicks him off her bed.

"my lord is a cruel master," he complains, cuddling her.

after they show up to breakfast like that, gawain straight up asks if she needs him to bail her out and is extremely disappointed when he finds that's not the case.)

they are a counter guardian who become servant (like EMIYA)

she has nicknames such as 'divine vanguard', 'the hero conqueror', 'lionheart of the back lines' but they are all just dramatizations of their job LOL

stage 1 and 2 ascension

i aimed for a design for a lot of pockets as counter guardians offer a lot of support, so i can imagine they need to take a lot with them. as for the imagery of spikes, that has links to their death, as well as their inner issues (hence why the spikes are around their neck and ears). but the whole vibe is 'yoo why u trying to make a grungy survival outfit a sexy waifu outfit'

they have goggles cuz alaya sends counter guardians to war fronts worldwide, so they need that protection.

stage 1 is their early days of trying to be what a counter hero is expected to be (according to her)

stage 2 is when her ass keep on getting beat on the battlefield and experiencing hells so she stop giving a fuck about looking neat

final ascension

this outfit represents their last living day as a counter guardian. their jacket and top are ripped. their collar is high and hair messy. with each ascension their look becomes increasingly disheveled, showcasing their liberation but also rapid descent to their eventual death (the spikes and decreasing amount of clothes on her body are part of that symbolism). THEY ALSO HAVE NOT MANY POCKETS LEFT :(

this form could be spikier....but it's okay. this fa represents 'exposing one's true self'. no more needing to be presentable, especially not in the face of death.

from left to right is how their appearance changes with each ascension. as you can see her hair becomes increasingly messy and less combed back, they also become more smug seeing as all caution was thrown to the wind in their last moments.

I think my biases on what irks me in fanservice or not really does just come down to whether a character realistically would dress up or show off the way that they do.

Mordred wearing practically nothing in later ascensions? Chill, dude just wants to go topless but society is weird about chest fat on afab ppl. Same with Caenis - he would probably be topless if he could get away with it, but I can also see why he wouldn't feel comfortable going all the way with the society he grew up in.

Semiramis and Nitocris outliers from the gender fuckery gang both were from societies where women being topless was just a normal part of life, so being tits out is just the norm for them.

Penthesilia could have been designed better with more time-period appropriate armor, but guess what! That armor still shows off the arms and waist and thighs, goddamn.

But then I see Artoria in the latest bunny outfit and I just fucking hiss like a goddamn cave gremlin because it's just bad! It's not how they'd choose to dress at all! You killed her and are just flaunting her puppet body around for looksies!

Like yeah yeah I know that fanservice is just a part of media but my POINT is, some fanservice is perfectly viable and in character and imo much better if it seems like something the character themself would choose, than just 'haha let's scoop out this character's soul and leave a big titty husk behind again'.

Maybe I'm just too goddamn demi for this but I think it's way sexier when a character is actually involved in their own body and sexuality rather than made into a wank puppet to bait the whales into spending more for a gacha :/
