VIGAN: FROM MOTORBIKES TO UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE SITE When I was younger, Vigan was all about motorbikes. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, Vigan was famous for being the marketplace for cheap secondhand motorbikes from Taiwan. How cheap? Back then you could buy a scooter for as low as 5,000 Pesos. It was during the summer of 1991 when my dad and I accompanied our neighbors on a trip to Vigan to buy some of these motorbikes. We stayed at the Filart family's ancestral house. Back then, Vigan was still a sleepy town. There were more 17th to 19th century houses lined up on both sides of Calle Crisologo then, but there were fewer people on that street. Calesas roamed the streets, but people did not use them for sightseeing. At 6 PM, the cutting off of electrical supply would throw the town into darkness. Candles and rechargeable lamps were the only sources of illumination inside the houses. I remember staying in the zaguán of the Filarts' ancestral house every night and traded ghost stories with the kids who lived in the nearby houses. They spoke Ilocano; I spoke Tagalog. Still, we understood each other. At 8 PM, not a living soul seemed to be awake. The streets belonged to the spirits whom we had invoked earlier through the telling of their stories. 25 years later, I decided to visit Vigan again. Not just once, but twice. The first was a group tour of the Ilocos Province, wherein we spent a few hours in Vigan. The second one, just seven months later, was a visit to Sr. Jerome Perlas, OSB at the Benedictine Sisters of the Eucharistic King. I stayed in Vigan for a few days then. The first thing that I notioced was the great number of people crowding Calle Crisologo, most of them tourists. Ever since it was declared a World Heritage Site by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in 1999, it had become one of the country's most popular tourist destinations.
