Running Parallels on a Mac is really convenient as you can seamlessly switch between Windows and Mac OS when needed. We are often asked if it is possible to run SOLIDWORKS on a Mac computer – the answer is YES you can! Watch our video summary to find out how.

We know quite a few users running SOLIDWORKS successfully on a Mac, and SOLIDWORKS recently updated their system requirements to include virtualisation such as parallels. However, the limit of this support is that although it will install, it may not run well as Macs rarely have supported graphics cards.

We therefore would NOT recommend this setup above a Windows based professional workstation.

Although SOLIDWORKS will run on OS X there are some major considerations to be aware of. SOLIDWORKS cannot run directly on macOS, so first you will need to install Windows on your Mac using an application such as Boot Camp or Parallels. There are other considerations such as graphics performance and the applications you are using SOLIDWORKS for. Other SOLIDWORKS Applications for Mac

SOLIDWORKS do develop several other applications that are available for macOS and iOS. This includes eDrawings Viewer for macOS, as well as eDrawings and eDrawings Professional for iOS. DraftSight is also available for macOS as a beta version.

Run SOLIDWORKS on a Mac - April 16, 2019

This is a fairly long-standing issue we come up against on the Innova Systems technical support desk, and also while talking to prospective customers about SOLIDWORKS. The simple answer is that SOLIDWORKS do not develop an Apple Mac version of the software, so we can’t install SOLIDWORKS natively.

We used to recommend the Bootcamp route, which involves installation of Bootcamp and then Microsoft Windows on the partition Bootcamp creates. The issue here is that if you need to access the Apple Mac Operating System (OS), you would need to shut down windows and boot up the Apple Mac OS, because they cannot be running simultaneously. This allows the full use of the hardware (RAM and graphics card) you have in your Apple Mac for Windows.

The alternative solution that we used to steer people away from is Parallels, a virtual machine software that allows you to run another OS inside the Mac OS (inside a window). The reason for not recommending this is that you are sharing the resource of the machine with two operating systems, thus not necessarily having the required resource to run a demanding program like SOLIDWORKS.

There were also historic problems with not being able to use the graphics card properly which would result in exceptionally slow performance when selecting things. This is due to most Macs not having certified graphics cards for SOLIDWORKS and parallels using a virtual graphics card driver or the default Windows driver. The virtual or generic drivers don’t offer the level of performance needed to run SOLIDWORKS correctly.

We have now installed and configured this on over 20 users’ Apple Mac computers and I have to say the response from these people has been amazing.

I have a mid 2014 MacBook Pro, which I’ve been using as a test bed. The specs are listed below:

You will note that this machine has Intel Iris Graphics (specific to the Mac) and not a certified graphics card for SOLIDWORKS.

So, I installed the latest version of Parallels (version 10) and a fresh copy of Windows 10 into the virtual environment and then set about making SOLIDWORKS work!

It’s pretty easy to get Windows installed, as Parallels guides you through that process very nicely. You can specify how much of the machine’s resource to give to the Windows OS – which is where a high spec Mac will stand you in better stead. It is always a good rule of thumb to assign half the available RAM to the Windows OS, so in my set up, I assigned 4GB of RAM.

The difficult bit is making the “Use Software OpenGL” button inside SOLIDWORKS become accessible. When you first install SOLIDWORKS, this button is ticked and greyed out, so we can’t turn it off. In our opinion, SOLIDWORKS is unusable at this point, as selecting geometry and navigating the software is too slow to be productive.

With a bit of effort, and some registry modifications, I was able to untick the OpenGL box, allowing us to use the graphics card to a much higher potential. The difference in performance was huge, and it allowed me to select and navigate the software much, much faster. One limitation that frustrated me early on was the lack of RealView Graphics (Accurate reflections and appearances), so I set about solving this problem too. I’m happy to report that RealView works perfectly on a properly specced Mac Book Pro!

Of course, this isn’t necessarily a new solution – Parallels has been around for some time, and installing Windows on a Mac for as long. The difference with our solution is that we can make SOLIDWORKS behave as well as a normal windows PC. No more slow selecting or poor rotational speed.

Above is a screenshot of the working set up, albeit in Window mode, not full screen. I have this running at a resolution of 2560 x 1600 in full screen mode and it is functioning very well. Please note: the specification of my Mac, and the resource I can assign to Windows is far from ideal. It would be recommended for people who are creating fairly simple parts with up to 100 features, and assemblies containing up to 500 components. Any more than that, and I think it would struggle.

In summary, the Parallels solution is now recommended by Innova Systems. We are confident of this working well in a production environment, but the spec of the Mac is key to the success. Along with our modifications to the registry in Windows, of course.

Many users work with a single FileMaker Pro database, copy the database to a mobile device, make changes and then copy it back to the desktop computer. If the database is small it can easily be copied between the desktop computer and the iOS device using iTunes, mail, or whatever. If the database is big it can be to time-consuming to copy the whole database back and forth. I spent some time earlier this year to develop a solution (well, ”hack” might be more accurate) where I import/export only part of the data, exchange only the updated information between the main database and a small local copy at a iOS device, using Dropbox as an intermediate storage.

With this kind of solution you don’t need a FileMaker Server, you don’t need to connect the iOS database to your desktop database, you bring only the data you need to your iOS device, and you can even use a FileMaker Runtime solution on your desktop. You work locally on your iOS device and you don’t need any internet connection except when importing or exporting changes, which can be done when you have WiFi access. Dropbox is a free service, at least for small amount of data.

The idea is to keep track of all changed (and deleted) data in the desktop database and click an Export button when you want to save the changed information to a Dropbox file. In your local iOS database you then click an Import button to get the data from Dropbox, run a script to update the relevant records, and also remove the file from Dropbox when imported. And, of course, vice versa.

With this very simple import/export strategy it is not possible to change the same record on both places, and you can only have 2 databases exchanging information. The point is that the two databases is never connected to each other, all communication is through files saved in Dropbox, and it is easy for a single user to keep a desktop database and a local iOS database in sync.

I made a small sample to demonstrate the functionality. It is more like a ”proof-of-concept”, it lacks features like error handling etc. The demo is simple, it is only one table with a few fields. I have made a short video, you can watch it below.

The demo is made up by the following techniques:

a Dropbox App, you make one in the Dropbox App Console. Choose the App Folder permission. You will need the App key (client id) and a redirect url for OAuth 2 authentication. The redirect url can be to a very small and simple html file (it only needs to say ”Hello”), but it needs to be available on the internet. I put mine on Dropbox and made a public Dropbox link to it, it works fine,

a web viewer to authenticate the FileMaker database with my Dropbox account. You will get the access token from the url parameters when authenticated by the user, I use the function GetLayoutObjectAttribute ( ”dropbox”; ”source” ) to get the url including the access token. The access token is saved in the database and used for all other Dropbox communication,

web viewers executing Javascripts, I use AngularJS (I am a little bit addicted to it), ngDropbox, and some minor javascripts to write files to Dropbox, get a listing of all files in a folder from Dropbox, and remove imported files from Dropbox. Almost all the ”magic” happens here,

the fmp protocol to get Dropbox file listings from a web viewer to FileMaker,

the Insert from URL script step to import data from Dropbox,

scripts in FileMaker for exporting and updating,

no plugins, the same technique works on both OS X, Windows and iOS.

In the video below I have FileMaker Pro to the left and a iPhone device to the right. Both are using a local database, the only connection is the Dropbox folder which is down to the right.

With some last-minute volunteering at this year’s CWP User Group at FileMaker DevCon (our 13th annual!), we had a record-high seven people share with the group.*

Joel Shapiro @jsfmp (that's me) - details below…

Mark DeNyse @mdenyse, who demonstrated how, with his fmPDA, you can change just one line of legacy FX.php code to use the FileMaker Data API with a new FX.php DataSource class. He then showed techniques for using the Data API to store data passed to a SmartThings webhook, and also demonstrated how to pull weather data from multiple sources (Ambient and Weather Underground) with cURL and the Data API to display in an iOS SDK app. 

Charles Delfs @mrdelfs, who talked about how they incorporate testing at four levels in their CWP service. He demoed UX pre-build testing, automated CWP testing, and FMP testing, using fullstory and UI-licious. 

Steve Winter @steveWinterNZ, who showed us how he uses database abstraction to decouple an app from its underlying database. Using Doctrine and Symfony he demoed how he can change one line of code to switch between the FileMaker PHP API and the Data API, or potentially any other database connection. Mike Beargie @MikeBeargie, who showed us some work he's been doing with Laravel Nova.

David Nahodyl @bluefeathergrp, who showed off a clever mapping solution where they’re caching data as JSON in Amazon S3 instead of pulling it directly from the FileMaker database in order to both improve performance and reduce Data API usage. You can see the demo, using customer/customer as the username and password.

Lui de La Parra @lui_dog, who shared his fms-api-client and node-red-contrib-filemaker, along with Node-RED.  “fms-api-client” is a FileMaker Data API client designed to allow easier interaction with a FileMaker database from a web environment. This client abstracts the FileMaker 17 & 18 Data API into class based methods.  “node-red-contrib-filemaker” uses “fms-api-client” to connect via the FileMaker Data API to FileMaker Server and provide FileMaker nodes to Node-RED. Node-RED is a programming tool for wiring together hardware devices, APIs and online services in new and interesting ways. It provides a browser-based editor that makes it easy to wire together flows using the wide range of nodes in the palette that can be deployed to its runtime in a single-click.

I started out mentioning a couple recent items that all CWP developers should be aware of:

FileMaker Server 17.0.3+ now installs PHP 7, but the PHP API isn’t compatible

For the first time since the FileMaker PHP API came out with FileMaker 9, the FMS installer now installs PHP 7.x.  Unfortunately, the API itself has not been updated to be PHP 7-compatible.  If you haven’t already updated your version of PHP to 7.x, the easiest way to have your CWP site work with PHP 7 is to use Steve Winter’s PHP API modification.  It’s a simple switch of the original FileMaker.php file and FileMaker directory to the same-named versions in Steve’s download. Note: You may separately need to modify your own PHP code to be PHP 7-compatible

Changes to Java in FileMaker Server 17.0.3+

Due to changes in Oracle’s licensing of Java 8, using the Web Publishing Engine (WPE) for either the XML/PHP API or WebDirect in FileMaker Server 17 and 18 now requires us to either purchase an Oracle Java SE Subscription or use a free open source license of Java 8 (OpenJDK 8). Note: The Data API does not use the WPE and so is not impacted by this change.

Who’s using the Data API in production CWP sites?

I then took a brief poll, for my own curiosity, to see how many people are using the Data API in their CWP sites.  Very unscientifically… lots of people are(!) Some reported using fmPDA, some fmREST, and some RESTfm which now supports the Data API (yes, there’s fmREST & RESTfm).  Presumably other people are connecting to the API in other ways, but they weren’t sharin’ :-P.

Scrollbars made visible on Mac and iOS — via CSS!

I’ve long been frustrated by the macOS/OS X and iOS default setting that hides scrollbars except when actively scrolling.  I think this is Bad UX, as users often won’t realize that there’s more content for them to see.  Fortunately, scrollbars can now easily be added using CSS (hurrah!)  Technically, the CSS specification is about styling the scrollbar—which on Windows (where scrollbars always display) means you can make them look nicer—but to me the best part is that we can now make scrollbars always visible on Mac/iOS.

According to Can I Use, browser support is now good (with the inclusion of the pseudo-elements). Even with no/limited support in Edge & IE, Windows users still get the default scrollbars; they’re just not styled.

Quick tip: Emmet plugin

Just a quick mention of the handy Emmet plugin that can be added to many text editors and IDEs.  It’s installed by default in VS Code (my editor of choice).

Emmet takes the snippets idea to a whole new level: you can type CSS-like expressions that can be dynamically parsed, and produce output depending on what you type in the abbreviation. Emmet is developed and optimised for web-developers whose workflow depends on HTML/XML and CSS, but can be used with programming languages too.

So typing something like:

div.wrapper>h1#main+p

will produce:
