Books of 2023
The ABC Murders, Agatha Christie--This is probably one of my favorite Poirot novels. It keeps you on your toes and as always with Agatha Christie, there’s a surprise twist (or two!)
1984, George Orwell--I feel like this is another book that has been lost to the times. When it first came out, I’m sure it was a phenomenal read--it predicts a dystopian future in a surveillance state, which, at this point, maybe hits a little too close to home for some. The ‘big bad’ and scary suggestions for the future in this book are, at this point in our lives, fairly normal feeling, or things that we’ve since in more recent sci-fi novels and tv shows, done bigger and scarier. So, while I’m sure it set up the foundation for which many of these new things were based on, I was fairly bored reading this book, and did not finish it.
Finn Fancy Necromancy, Randy Henderson--This was a fun, light read. It follows the story of a boy who was framed for a crime he didn’t commit, and his journey of discovery after completing his sentence.
The Diviners, Libba Bray--A supernatural-esque mystery story set in New York in the 1920s? What else can you ask for? This book was actually really good, it had a well rounded set of diverse and interesting characters, and was a good mix of a scary read and a fun read.
The City We Became, NK Jemisin--This was a really interesting book--it’s hard to explain without giving too much away, but it was a very unique writing style overall, with subtle shifts in narration for when a different character was telling their part of the story. It explored a new concept, I think, in writing and storytelling, which I really enjoyed.
Shadow and Bone, Leigh Bardugo--I’m a bit biased because I saw the show first, but that and a friend convinced me enough to read the book, and I loved it! The TV show stays pretty accurate to this book, at least (I’ve heard it strays from some of the later ones). Although it has some of the typical fantasy YA romance tropes, I still really enjoyed this book, and it had enough new and interesting ideas to keep me hooked and interested in the book. I can’t wait to read the rest of the series!
Moby Dick, Herman Melville--It’s taken me literal years to finish this one because I was reading it on my phone so would read it while riding to work and then forget about it for months on end and then pick it up again. BUT regardless, I really enjoyed it! I can see why a lot of high schoolers hate it, she’s DENSE. There’s a lot of explanation and things that aren’t necessarily plot-related going on in the book, which I enjoy, but I can see why others wouldn’t. Another one that I’d maybe recommend reading the abridged version of, but I really liked it!
Dune, Frank Herbert--Having watched the newest movie beforehand really helped me with this one. It’s a FANTASTIC book, but there are a lot of moving parts, politics, and characters with similar names, that I definitely would have gotten confused and frustrated if I hadn’t have had the movie to base things off of. That being said, would highly recommend reading. A lot times with old sci-fi books like this, they don’t live up to the hype because like, they may have been groundbreaking at the time they came out, but our expectations have risen so much since then. However, for a book that came out in 1965, this one still holds up. It definitely kept me interested throughout the book, which is saying something, because she’s THICK.
The 7 1/2 Deaths of Eveyln Hardcastle, Stuart Turton--This was a really good book with a fresh new take on murder mystery/whodunits. Essentially, the narrator wakes up each day as a new person, reliving the events of the same day over and over again until he can solve the murder. It was a really interesting concept and I thought very well executed.

finn fancy necromancy.
dialogue prompts from finn fancy necromancy by randy henderson.
glad to see you’re still a dork.
i’ve actually missed you.
my humor is a legitimate coping mechanism.
nice try, but i can tell something’s up.
i’ve been here ten minutes and i’m already talking shit.
we kept your room just like you left it.
i think it’s awesome, what you’re doing.
you aren’t like the assholes i’m always dealing with.
sometimes the truth gets hidden behind the words.
if anyone can or would help you, it’s me.
i’ve heard all about you, so i kind of feel like i know you.
i won’t be going anywhere for at least a couple days. promise.
maybe you could sleep in my room tonight. then we could talk and stuff.
if the news is bad, i’m not sure i want to hear it tonight.
it’s just a dare. you don’t have to get all stupid about it.
this place brings back some memories, huh?
these days, i pretty much do what i want.
do you want to kiss me?
it’s sweet of you to worry about me with so much going on.
if i die here, i’m gonna kill you.
i want more answers and less whining.
god, you’re like a soap opera.
you really are clueless, aren’t you?
i was defending you, you idiot.
let’s get to the part where you realize i’m some kind of wonderful and ask me out already.
i’m a mess in a lot of ways, but mostly fun ways.
is there anything you wanted to say?
i’m not sure i even know how to live in the real world.
congratulations! you win the ‘vaguest bullshit’ award!
i feel like i’ve finally come home.
you sure you can talk and think at the same time?
it’s been a while since things were simple.
you’ve never exactly been easy to talk to.
what am i supposed to be guessing with my 20 questions?
i just wanted to control my own life.

The Familia Arcana series
god I'm mad at myself. I said I'd stay on myself about this and I already fell of this for a few days. so, I'm going to review a series that had a big impact on my life a few years back: the trilogy that started with Finn Fancy Necromancy. The series starts with a dud named Finn coming back to his body from the Far lands after well...being in exile from it and some fae spirit basically being in control of it for like..
.20 years since the 80s becauae of some unknown crime he committed with necromancy. I dont wanna spoil a lot of the plot but....mentally dude is still a teenager and not much has changed. he us still back in the 80s. The book and the series deal a lot with dealing with weird family dynamics trauma, ypur towns weird past, family and cultural history and learning to overcome all of that and help both grown and become better. tbh, I don't know if I would be who I was without this series today. its a weird little urban fantasy series about a family of necromancwrs in a small town and ironically....necromancy is not the bad guy in this book . it is the hero. uts....good to see it in a positive light.

4 I like my name as a name but I don’t like it for me..? It’s a good name but I don’t feel like it means what I am but I do like the story of how I got it. I would like to change my name and prefer going by my online alias’s lol but I’m not sure if I ever will.

Quirky Character You’ll Love: Book Recommendations
Finn Fancy Necromancy by Randy Henderson
Writers of the Future grand prize winner Randy Henderson presents a dark and quirky debut in Finn Fancy Necromancy. Finn Gramaraye was framed for the crime of dark necromancy at the age of 15, and exiled to the Other Realm for twenty five years. But now that he's free, someone-probably the same someone-is trying to get him sent back. Finn has only a few days to discover who is so desperate to keep him out of the mortal world, and find evidence to prove it to the Arcane Enforcers. They are going to be very hard to convince, since he's already been convicted of trying to kill someone with dark magic. But Finn has his family: His brother Mort who is running the family necrotorium business now, his brother Pete who believes he's a werewolf, though he is not, and his sister Samantha who is, unfortunately, allergic to magic. And he's got Zeke, a fellow exile and former enforcer, who doesn't really believe in Finn's innocence but is willing to follow along in hopes of getting his old job back.
Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman
No one’s ever told Eleanor that life should be better than fine Meet Eleanor Oliphant: she struggles with appropriate social skills and tends to say exactly what she’s thinking. Nothing is missing in her carefully timetabled life of avoiding unnecessary human contact, where weekends are punctuated by frozen pizza, vodka, and phone chats with Mummy. But everything changes when Eleanor meets Raymond, the bumbling and deeply unhygienic IT guy from her office. When she and Raymond together save Sammy, an elderly gentleman who has fallen, the three rescue one another from the lives of isolation that they had been living. Ultimately, it is Raymond’s big heart that will help Eleanor find the way to repair her own profoundly damaged one. If she does, she'll learn that she, too, is capable of finding friendship—and even love—after all. Smart, warm, uplifting, Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine is the story of an out-of-the-ordinary heroine whose deadpan weirdness and unconscious wit make for an irresistible journey as she realizes. . . the only way to survive is to open your heart.
The Readers of Broken Wheel Recommend by Katarina Bivald, Alice Menzies (Translator)
Once you let a book into your life, the most unexpected things can happen... Broken Wheel, Iowa, has never seen anyone like Sara, who traveled all the way from Sweden just to meet her pen pal, Amy. When she arrives, however, she finds that Amy's funeral has just ended. Luckily, the townspeople are happy to look after their bewildered tourist—even if they don't understand her peculiar need for books. Marooned in a farm town that's almost beyond repair, Sara starts a bookstore in honor of her friend's memory. All she wants is to share the books she loves with the citizens of Broken Wheel and to convince them that reading is one of the great joys of life. But she makes some unconventional choices that could force a lot of secrets into the open and change things for everyone in town. Reminiscent of The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, this is a warm, witty book about friendship, stories, and love.
The First Bad Man by Miranda July
From the acclaimed filmmaker, artist, and bestselling author of No One Belongs Here More Than You, a spectacular debut novel that is so heartbreaking, so dirty, so tender, so funny--so Miranda July--readers will be blown away. Here is Cheryl, a tightly-wound, vulnerable woman who lives alone, with a perpetual lump in her throat. She is haunted by a baby boy she met when she was six, who sometimes recurs as other people's babies. Cheryl is also obsessed with Phillip, a philandering board member at the women's self-defense non-profit where she works. She believes they've been making love for many lifetimes, though they have yet to consummate in this one. When Cheryl's bosses ask if their twenty-one-year-old daughter Clee can move into her house for a little while, Cheryl's eccentrically-ordered world explodes. And yet it is Clee--the selfish, cruel blond bombshell--who bullies Cheryl into reality and, unexpectedly, provides her the love of a lifetime. Tender, gripping, slyly hilarious, infused with raging sexual fantasies and fierce maternal love, Miranda July's first novel confirms her as a spectacularly original, iconic and important voice today, and a writer for all time. The First Bad Man is dazzling, disorienting, and unforgettable.

tagged by @stitchcasual (and @verhexen similarly, because for some stupid reason my puter didn’t populate ghosties’ entire tag)
Rules: Tag 9 people you want to get to know better (kat’s redux)
Chapstick or Lipstick: i have established that it is chapstick (actually, blistex, but that’s neither here nor there) because i am a Hapless Dimwit when it comes to lipstick. i end up looking like a comic-drawn version of myself with the entirely wrong lipliner, or for some reason my upper lip develops devil horns. do not ask. it happens.
Relationship status: on paper, according to the Commonwealth, i am single. in my heart i have been married for, like, ten-plus years.
Favourite Colors: you know the acid-green that is virulent and hurts the eyes? that’s used on Mr Yuk stickers in certain parts of the US? GIR green? that’s me. that, and bruise-purple and blood-red.
Last Movie I Saw: Get Out. i HIGHLY recommend this film to everyone, especially if you are not a PoC. it is an extremely visceral film, but Jordan Peele is a goddam genius because there are so many layers of nuance and subtlety and symbolism woven together. not to mention the acting is fucking stellar. but be careful, friends, trigger warnings do apply for racism, casual violence, consent issues, etc etc.
Top 3 Shows: define the medium in which said shows are delivered, please. i don’t watch a bunch of tv, but i do listen to a lot of podcasts and watch a lot of youtube shows. in no particular order: Critical Role, The Adventure Zone, MBMBaM, TWD
Top 3 Bands/Artists: this is an extremely difficult one for me. Tool, always Tool; at the moment i’m back on a Morphine kick, and there are a lot of soundtracks because i’m researching for an upcoming character i’m rolling.
Books I’m Currently Reading: “Finn Fancy Necromancy,” i am also rereading the Dresden Files novels because YOU DON’T WRITE FAST ENOUGH BUTCHER, and then there’s the fanfic i read online.
i tag anyone else who would like to do this of a sunday afternoon.
