DAY 5: FLÅM Today we arrived at Flåm. This is our last stop before returning to Germany. We decided to do a train ride with the famous flåmsbana. Nordkap - Day 29

We started the day as usual: a nice breakfast with coffee. After packing our stuff we started driving towards Flam where we will take a railway trip.

Flam

The drive to Flam took us a little longer as one of the tunnels was closed on one side. Therefore, we had to wait almost 20min until we were allowed to pass. Upon arrival we immediately grabbed our gear and walked to the railway station. The next train was about to leave in 5 minutes and so we rapidly bought a round-way ticket. The railway was built to connect Flam with the Bergen-Oslo railway. The construction was completed in 1940 and most of it had been dug out without any machinery. With its 20km length it‘s rather short but due to the incline of 800m it takes around an hour to reach the top at Mydral. The train was boarded by us in the last minute before departure. This railway had been given many awards for the most beautiful train-ride of the world and this is where we disagree. To be honest we were very disappointed by the ride. It is a rather slow ride with some waterfalls next to it but it‘s nothing special. You can see the same when you just travel around Norway everywhere. Furthermore, it is extremely expensive (650NOK/person = 65 CHF) for such a short trip and it is no round-trip at all as you go back the same way down. Maybe this is just because we are Swiss and we‘re used to such train rides. But we are sure that there are more beautiful train rides in Switzerland than this one. If you are here in summer you would be able to do the 1.5km long zip-line in connection with a bike ride back to Flam and then this might be a different story. All in all I would say definitely not worth the long drive towards Flam and not a must see. Nevertheless we were able to take some nice pictures and enjoy the ride.

Stegastein-Lookout

When arriving back at the van we first ate lunch and then drove for another 15minutes to the village underneath the Stegastein Lookout. From here we hiked up the steep trail to the lookout. It took us around 1.5h to reach it. From here you have a beautiful view over the fjord. After a small snack we hiked back down again. If you are in the area the lookout is a nice place visit but again no must see. For all you lazy people there‘s even the possibility to reach it by car.

For tonight we drove back to the same spot as last night. Here we ate dinner and watched a movie.

My attic just was not large enough. Running an HO scale ICE 4 just looked ridiculous. N scale seemed to be the answer. Le montagne si tuffano a picco nel mare e creano spettacoli naturali di grande effetto in cui la realtà si mescola alla fiaba. Le città sono un pout pourri di storia e architettura, dove poter apprezzare la vita locale e le strutture museali. Se a questo si aggiunge la bellezza dei fiordi e delle case di legno che nel periodo estivo sono illuminate dal sole di mezzanotte, ecco vi trovate in Norvegia. Patria della natura incontaminata e delle cittadine ricche di musei, la terra dei Troll offre scenari di incredibile bellezza.

Oslo, la capitale, oltre a sorgere in uno scenario naturale fantastico è ricca di musei e luoghi di interesse; Bergen, è la porta dei fiordi, che ogni anno ospita decine e centinaia di turisti.  Stavanger richiama decine di persone per le case del vecchio quartiere e per la vita notturna che  offre centinaia di alternative.  Le Chiese di legno, poi, sono esempi architettonici unici al mondo. Il tour, in cui abbiamo utilizzato tutti i mezzi di locomozione,  ha toccato la capitale dello Stato, la cittadina dei fiordi e la costa meridionale. Ma senza ombra di dubbio il modo per conoscere le bellezze del territorio è l’auto, grazie alla quale potrete scegliere i percorsi da fare e gli itinerari da intraprendere per godere delle bellezze del territorio. Il giro è partito dall’aeroporto di Sandefjord Torp da cui abbiamo preso la strada che passa da Drammen, Gol e il lago Eldevratnet. Nel corso della lunga strada troverete un cambio, spesso veloce, del paesaggio. Si passa infatti dal verde lussureggiante dei fiordi e delle insenature, all’atmosfera brulla nei pressi del lago, dove sono comunque presenti piccole case in legno.

Il tutto per arrivare alla chiesa di Borgund.  Menzionata per la prima volta da una fonte scritta nel 1342, la struttura è stata dedicata a sant’Andrea. È stata tuttavia usata come chiesa soltanto fino al  1868, quando al suo fianco è stata costruita la nuova chiesa. Nel1877, per evitare che la struttura andasse persa, è stata acquistata dalla Società per la conservazione dei monumenti antichi e da allora è diventata un luogo turistico convertito in museo.

Dopo una rapida visita alle struttura, proseguite verso Stegastein, dove si trova uno dei punti panoramici più belli della Norvegia. La struttura sporge a un’altezza di 630 metri dal livello del mare. Rivestito in legno e messo in equilibrio su una struttura in acciaio, il piccolo balcone è raggiungibile da una stradina molto stretta che la collega al centro di Aurland. Proprio la cittadine è collegata a Lærdalsøyri, da una delle strade panoramiche più belle della Norvegia: Aurlandsfjellet. Lunga 45 chilometri, la strada sale dal livello del mare e arriva sul desolato altopiano disseminato di massi. In alternativa potete prendere il tunnel di 25 chilometri che vi porterà dall’altra parte del tunnel.

Altra piccola sosta è a Flam, la cittadina nota per la Flamsbana, una bellissima tratta ferroviaria che si inerpica lungo il fiordo. Il piccolo villaggio di pescatori merita una visita, anche solo per prendere una birra. Poi appena i vostri sensi di sono rifocillati, saltate in auto per la tappa a Bergen.
