Imagery of the dead dancing is not a new concept; artistic images of corpses and cadavers cavorting to their graves has been common since the Late Middle Ages (1300-1500). Simultaneously horrifying and comedic, it has long been a method for artists to contend with the grim inevitability of death, while acknowledging the humour in its unification of people of all stripes. No matter how they struggle, the king and the pauper will ultimately find themselves in the same place - the grave.

The first of Disney's experimental Merry Melodies series and one of the most beloved of their early run of animations, The Skeleton Dance has continued to be enjoyed almost 100 years after its creation in 1929. Though not explicitly based around Halloween, it is frequently revisited in October for its dark, mischievous tone. As well, its imagery, though slightly ghoulish, has aged remarkably well as compared to its contemporaries of the time, such as another Disney short animated and recorded concurrently to Skeleton Dance, The Opry House (1929), which featured elements that would be considered xenophobic and transphobic today.

The concept of an animated short choreographed to prerecorded music was originally pitched by longtime Disney collaborator and acquaintance Carl W. Stalling, and supposedly led to some consternation between the two otherwise friends. At the time, most musical accompaniment of film or animations would be produced following completion of the visual aspect. This lead to the development of an early prototype of something known as a "click track", a metronome-like series of audio cues to help synchronize music to a visual element. This early method involved punching holes in a roll of undeveloped film, that when run on the soundhead would produce a series of clicks and pops to guide the animators. The soundtrack for Skeleton Dance was recorded in the Cinephone studios in New York under Pat Powers, Disney's short-lived distributor.

Animator Ub Iwerks was supposedly inspired by drawings of skeletons by British cartoonist Thomas Rowlandson and imagery from the walls of Etruscan tombs. Animation on Skeleton Dance began in January of 1929 and took almost 6 weeks to complete, of which Iwerks animated all but the first scene, which was animated by Les Clarke.

Aside from the titular boneheads, the animation features many horror tropes - a cold, ominous wind blows throughout the film, an owl leers at the camera, silhouetted by the moon, ragged black cats hiss and spit at each other perched upon gravestones, bats flutter and spiders scurry.

It's not hard to see why this film has become closely associated with Halloween despite being completed nearly 7 months away from the holiday. Although America's devastating economic downturn would not begin in earnest until September of '29 following the Wall Street Crash, it's easy to draw parallels to the untold loss of life due to starvation and sickness during the Great Depression and the emaciated stars of Skeleton Dance, not wholly unlike the Danse Macabre of the victims of the Black Death in the mid 1300s.

Reactions to The Skeleton Dance were unsurprisingly mixed. It was originally previewed on March 20th to a lukewarm response, then screened at the Carthay Circle Theatre in Los Angeles, Fox Theatre in San Francisco, and the Roxy Theatre in New York. Sometimes you have to do it to get through it though, so there isn't anything wrong with powering through and pretending if that's what makes it easier for you," Kaia took a sip from her glass again, this time it wasn't the wine making her cheeks red, "thank you, it means a lot to hear that."

Austin — 10/07/2023 2:01 PM Austin grinned a little when he noticed the flush of Kaia's cheeks and he felt the swarm of butterflies inside him again. "I..think the wine is starting to get to me," he said after finishing his first glass. "This stuff must be really strong, huh?"

Kaia — 10/07/2023 2:33 PM "Is that a good thing?" Kaia pondered out loud, looking ahead at him. "It is kind of strong. But it is helping with my nerves a little bit," she had to admit. "It helps me not to overanalyze too much."

Austin — 10/07/2023 3:41 PM “I’m feeling a lot,” Austin said, laughing softly again. “I feel kind of fluttery,” he admitted. “The wine’s making me a little giddy.”

Kaia — 10/07/2023 4:18 PM "Hmmm maybe it's not the wine, maybe it's infatuation," Kaia teased him, shooting him a wink before polishing off the wine that was left in her own glass.

Austin — 10/07/2023 6:39 PM Austin licked his lips in response to her wink and smirked a little bit as he watched her. “More?” He asked.

Kaia — 10/07/2023 9:15 PM Kaia is hyper tuned in to his mouth that she thought it better to glance away before looking back. “Sure,” Kaia nodded her head and handed over her empty glass.

Austin — 10/07/2023 9:16 PM The subtle fliratious tones between them almost felt like electricity coursing through Austin's veins. He took a second to remind himself to breathe before picking up the wine bottle and oh-so-carefully pouring them each another glass. "Here you go," he said, setting Kaia's glass closer to hers before taking his seat again.

Kaia — 10/07/2023 10:59 PM Kaia sat up a little straighter having to readjust her position because the butterflies in her stomach are flapping their wings. “Thank you,” she took the glass from him, and had a sip. “What song instantly puts you in a good mood?” Kaia knows it’s a random question but it happened to pop into her head.

Austin — 10/07/2023 11:09 PM Austin’s eyes were glued to her and he couldn’t stop staring at her lips, wondering what it would be like to kiss them. He shifted slightly when his heart skipped a beat in his chest, hoping to alleviate it. Austin thought for a second. “American Pie by Don McClean. Is one song could play each time you entered a room what would it be?”

Kaia — 10/07/2023 11:46 PM It is completely intentional when Kaia continues to bring the glass to her lips to draw attention to her mouth just in case he might be looking. She already couldn’t take her eyes off of his, and she wasn’t trying to hide that fact. “Good choice.” Taking a moment to think about her answer, she responded, “The Way You Make Me Feel, Michael Jackson. It’s impossible not to like that song.” Kaia shifted slightly, letting her knee brush against his, it felt like if they hadn’t had some kind of physical contact she might burst.

Austin — 10/07/2023 11:51 PM The butterflies within him fluttered their wings wildly each time Austin caught her and her lips. His heart skipped another beat like clockwork once their knees brushed. He didn’t want to be too forward but carefully leaned forward and gently took her glass before setting it down. October 8, 2023

Kaia — 10/08/2023 12:15 AM It felt like the air in the room was charged with volts of electricity, it was palpable and Kaia was relieved when he didn’t flinch of back away when their knees touched. She didn’t take her eyes off of him as he set the glasses down and her heart started to beat more quickly. Not only did she lick her lips to assure him that she wanted to kiss him, but her gaze traveled from his mouth, up to meet his eyes and then back down to his mouth, indicating exactly what was on her mind.

Austin — 10/08/2023 2:54 AM Austin leaned in and closed his eyes. His heart was racing when he finally placed a shaky hand over Kaia’s and leaned in a bit more to connect their lips in a kiss.

Kaia — 10/08/2023 10:46 AM Kaia allowed her fingers to curl up against his when she felt his hand over hers. When their lips connected, her heart leapt in her chest and her lips pulled into a smile against his own. The femme was taking in the soft feeling of his lips against hers and the taste of wine that still lingered.

Austin — 10/08/2023 10:57 AM Austin had thoughtfully and thoroughly brushed his teeth before Kaia had gotten there and he hadn't smoked since her arrival, aside from the aftertaste of the wine his breath should've been as fresh as could be. He kept the kiss sweet and soft and slow. He allowed his lips to linger over hers for a few more seconds before pulling away and opening his eyes to look at hers.

Kaia — 10/08/2023 11:06 AM There is already something inside of Kaia that's telling her that this just feels right, and it isn't just because Austin is an amazing kisser, although that is a very big upside. Opening her eyes, her lips pulled into an even wider smile. "It's definitely not the wine that's making me feel giddy."

Austin — 10/08/2023 11:08 AM He moved his hand back to his own lap and shifted a little bit. Austin's body felt tingly in the best way possible. "I've had this ball of fluttery feelings inside me as soon as you walked in, so," he admitted, the tiniest blush covering his cheeks. "So, I think it's safe to say that I feel the same way."

Kaia — 10/08/2023 11:21 AM "I didn't think it would be possible for my smile to get any bigger, but I'm certain it just did," Kaia mentioned, "my cheeks are going to hurt from smiling so much around you. You are also a very good kisser."

Austin — 10/08/2023 11:24 AM His face got a bit more pink and he bowed his head to take another sip from his wine glass. "You're a sweetheart. Thank you, I'm glad I can make you smile, maybe I can do it forever," Austin said boldly, the wine and the giddiness of new feelings taking him over.

Kaia — 10/08/2023 11:36 AM Now it was her turn for her cheeks to get enflamed, Kaia had to bite her bottom lip subtly, mostly to stop her smile from getting any wider because it did hurt her cheeks, in the most satisfying way. "If I could feel this happy and giddy every day I would be a fool not to take the chance."

Austin — 10/08/2023 11:38 AM His cheeks hurt from smiling and blushing, he hadn't done that in so long. "You make me feel new," he commented after remaining quiet for a moment to gather his thoughts. "Can you..tell me about your last relationship?" he asked before picking his glass up and taking another sip.

Kaia — 10/08/2023 12:00 PM "I think that's the perfect way to describe it. I couldn't really put my finger on how to say it, but that makes sense. It feels refreshing, right?" It was a great feeling and Kaia didn't want it to end any time soon. Picking up her own glass, she took a sip from it, "Sure." Kaia didn't often discuss much about her relationships, at least not in public, but it was obvious to her and to Austin that she felt comfortable enough with him. "Jacob. We were together about a year. He's a good guy, there's no bad blood or anything. At some point along the way, things just changed. Our feelings and priorities, I guess. We kind of grew apart. I know that sounds cliche. We ended things a couple of months ago, but it was over for a while before it was actually over."

Austin — 10/08/2023 12:12 PM He'd had a lot of experience but his dating history had been scarce and rocky. New is exactly how he'd describe it. Austin listened carefully once she began speaking and set his drink down on the coffee table again. He nodded slowly, taking in each word that she'd said. "No bad blood? That sounds..really nice," he admitted. "My parents had a relationship like that. They got divorced when I was six, realized they were so much better off as best friends."

Kaia — 10/08/2023 12:16 PM The way that Austin focuses on her while he's listening to every thing that she's saying is something that Kaia picks up on right away and it makes her feel special that he cares about what she's speaking about. "We both just knew that it was time to part ways. It was probably a lot better for you as well as them. Sometimes relationships aren't always meant to be. Or they just change a little. Still having love for the person but not being in love with the person."

Austin — 10/08/2023 12:20 PM Austin nodded slowly. "Yes, I understand that," he agreed. "They were always really pretty close, we didn't have the typical divorced parents thing," he explained. "I have a sister named Ashley, she is five years older than me," he explained.

Kaia — 10/08/2023 12:25 PM "That's nice though, divorces can get so nasty and bitter, I'm glad that you didn't have to experience it like that, that can be really hard for children." Kaia picked up her glass and took another sip. "Are you two close?"

Austin — 10/08/2023 12:29 PM "We used to be a bit closer but, things got kind of crazy when I went to Australia to film Elvis," he explained. "I kind of self-isolated from my family," he admitted. "Forgot who I was, all of that. I went completely method. But usually, yeah. I love her to death, she's a lifeline for me. You have a brother, right? Are you close with him?"

Kaia — 10/08/2023 12:41 PM "It doesn't help that Australia is far on top of having to dive so deeply into a role, it's not really like someone could just jump on a quick flight, getting there and back is sort of a process. Are you guys spending more time together now that you're back here?" Kaia questioned curiously. "Yes, Presley, he's a few years older than me, but he's one of my best friends."

Austin — 10/08/2023 12:47 PM "Exactly. And sometimes, usually when I'm in that headspace I really don't want anyone visiting me. I wasn't in a relationship at the time anymore and I was fully immersed in Elvis," Austin explained. "Kind of, she recently moved to Tennessee with her husband. I'm so happy for her but she's not as close anymore, geographically." He listened to her talk about her brother and nodded, smiling some. "Reminds me of Ashley. That's great, I'm glad that you guys are close."

Kaia — 10/08/2023 12:55 PM "Do you find that it's almost harder to focus on what you need to be doing for a role if you have people visiting you? That it's sort of like a distraction?" Kaia wouldn't ever fully understand, but that didn't mean that she wasn't going to try to. "Oh that's kind of hard. But if it makes her happy to be there then I guess it's okay. It's nice having a built in buddy"

Austin — 10/08/2023 12:57 PM "Absolutely. Not always but for something like Elvis - I can't imagine what it would've been like if someone had visited me," he admitted. "Of course. It makes complete sense to me."

Kaia — 10/08/2023 1:20 PM "I can sort of understand that. I haven't ever had a role like that, but I can understand how it feels hard to balance when you have to get that deep into a character. Especially one that's such a historic figure. That had to be a lot of pressure," Kaia stated as she nodded her head.

Austin — 10/08/2023 1:31 PM "It was a lot of stress," he agreed. "I hope it'll all pay off, we all worked really hard on it. I'm hoping for the best but it wasn't easy - the mental stuff got really tricky. And I ended up getting really sick at the end. I had this virus that mimicked the symptoms of appendicitis. My body began shutting down pretty much and I ended up in a hospital in Australia for a week after shooting," Austin explained.

Kaia — 10/08/2023 2:03 PM "I hope that it does too. But hard work usually does pay off, I dont think that will be any different in this case," Kaia stated. "Appendicitis? I hear that's really painful, so that sounds terrible. Were you able to take some time off after that to heal?"

Austin — 10/08/2023 2:04 PM "Thank you," he said, giving her a genuine smile. He appreciated the compliment. "It was really painful but yes. Kind of, I didn't want to fall into a depression so I ended up flying to the UK with Tom Hanks and we filmed a World War 2 miniseries for Apple," Austin explained. "So, I guess, no. I didn't take any time off."

Kaia — 10/08/2023 6:16 PM “You’re welcome,” Kaia replied, mirroring his smile. While she continued to listen to him, her eyes grew wide, “you just ended up flying to the UK with Tom Hanks. That’s star power you possess there.”

Austin — 10/08/2023 6:20 PM Austin blushed again. “I got lucky. He was so good to me. It was such a dream come true to work with him,” he said. “The filming process for that movie was stressful. I’d have trouble sleeping and I’d wake up in the middle of the night and my heart would just be beating out of my chest,” he admitted. “Channeling him as much as I could helped a little with the stress but I think everything caught up to me. Dehydration, exhaustion, the heart palpitations and everything.” He shook his head and smiled a little. “Working on being a little nicer to my body.”

Kaia — 10/08/2023 6:30 PM “You are going to chalk that up to luck? I don’t think luck has anything to do with it, it was hard work paying off.” Kaia didn’t know the particular situation but opportunities like that had less to do with luck and more to do with talent. “That sounds terrifying. Did you tell anyone that was happening? No wonder you were exhausted.”

Austin — 10/08/2023 6:32 PM “No,” he said, shaking his head. “I hadn’t told anyone about it. I guess I’m lucky it wasn’t much worse. It was scary but I was so focused on finishing the movie. I tend to put myself on the back burner for work,” Austin pointed out. (edited)

Kaia — 10/08/2023 7:15 PM “That sounds extremely stressful,” Kaia observed, “the fact that you were able to push through no sleep and accomplish filming an entire movie speaks a lot to your work ethic. But you still need to find that balance between work and yourself. That’s important.”

Austin — 10/08/2023 7:50 PM Austin nodded. “I’m not so good at that, I know I need to take better care of myself,” he admitted.

Kaia — 10/08/2023 7:55 PM “It can be a very difficult balance to find, in this business especially because it isn’t like working any normal hours. It’s very easy to fall into an all or nothing mentality,” Kaia confessed. “And when hard work pays off, it can be hard to even want to take a break.”

Austin — 10/08/2023 8:44 PM Austin nodded in agreement. “Absolutely. Do you ever feel that way with modeling? I’ve done a few things but nothing very serious.”

Kaia — 10/08/2023 9:08 PM “Sometimes. Once in a while it feels like everything’s happening all at one time. And when it isn’t all at once sometimes it’s so spaced out that I have to hope people will want to work with me. They’re usually quick jobs for the most part though, unless it’s a campaign that’s usually spread out over a bit more time,” Kaia explained. “Every set is different though so it keeps me on my toes.”

Austin — 10/08/2023 9:10 PM Austin nodded slowly and listened to her as she spoke. “I see. That sounds like it can be really worrying,” he commented.

Kaia — 10/08/2023 9:31 PM “It is sometimes, it feels uncertain but that’s just the nature of the industry.” Kaia doesn’t think it would be the end of the world if she had to do more behind the scenes work one day. “What do you have coming up next?”

Austin — 10/08/2023 9:37 PM “I think later this year I’m going to be training physically for Dune 2,” he said thoughtfully. “Not sure what else is on the horizon yet.” He licked his lips again.

Kaia — 10/08/2023 10:07 PM “Are you looking forward to it?” Looking at him, she asked the question. “How do you decide which roles you want to go for? Have there been many that you have had to turn down because you didn’t think they were a good fit?”

Austin — 10/08/2023 10:15 PM “Some, for sure,” Austin agreed. “Others kind of just click for me,” he said. “Sometimes it doesn’t work at all.”

Kaia — 10/08/2023 11:24 PM “Do you just know when it’s right? You get that gut intuitive feeling? If I’m asking too many questions, please tell me. I’m intrigued to learn about you and what goes on in your mind.” Kaia’s always been a curious person, hungry for knowledge, especially about things she’s interested in.

Kaia — 10/09/2023 8:36 PM "Me too, but it still bugs me out when it happens sometimes," even just thinking about it caused her to shake her head. "Anything else big. Hm. I'm not actually a model, I'm an undercover FBI agent out to expose all of hollywoods dirty little secrets. does that count?"

Austin — 10/09/2023 8:50 PM Austin laughed softly and nodded. "Yes, I think that probably counts as a big secret. But are you supposed to be telling me these things?" he asked, raising an eyebrow.

Kaia — 10/09/2023 9:09 PM "No! Of course I'm not supposed to be telling anyone. Looks like now I'm gonna have to kill you." Kaia made a big show of rolling her eyes with an overexaggerated groan to follow, "I hate when I do this. It's always the handsome ones."

Kaia — 10/10/2023 7:51 PM Kaia didn’t know him all that well yet, but what she did know was that he always seemed very sincere. “I believe you.” Turning her hand over, her fingers curled up around his and it made her stomach flip flop.

Austin — 10/10/2023 7:57 PM He swallowed slightly when he felt his own stomach flip. “I think maybe I’ve already said this but I think I have a swarm of butterflies inside me,” he said, leaning back against the couch.

Kaia — 10/10/2023 8:12 PM “I know how you feel,” Kaia admitted to him, her thumb brushed along his hand . “I enjoy spending time with you .” It’s always hard to tell how things with a potential love interest will pan out, but she is pleasantly surprised by the effortless chemistry that they have.

Austin — 10/10/2023 8:23 PM Austin watched her features. He could watch her all day. “What - what about drinking?” He asked dumbly. “Well, obviously you drink. What about smoking, any recreational drugs?” He asked curiously.

Kaia — 10/10/2023 9:18 PM “I do enjoy a drink now and then,” Kaia answered as she nodded, “I smoke weed on occasion, it helps my anxiety sometimes. I guess I’ve tried the random things like Xanax. Ecstasy once. Nothing that I’ve ever made a habit of, just more of a social type of thing I suppose. What about you?”

Austin — 10/10/2023 9:29 PM Austin listened carefully and nodded. “I smoked weed with my ex-girlfriend,” he explained. “She was into vaping and I’d occasionally do that too. I’ve tried ecstasy,” he said, nodding slowly. “At a party with the same ex-girlfriend. At some point during Elvis I began smoking cigarettes and that has been a pretty consistent thing for my anxiety since 2020,” Austin explained. “I know some people are completely turned off by that and - I understand why honestly. I try to keep it quiet, I really don’t want my sister finding out,” he admitted truthfully.

Kaia — 10/10/2023 9:53 PM “All just sort of recreational for me, there isn’t any one thing that I do on a regular basis, but I’m always up for a good time,” Kaia answered, her back leaned against the couch and she looked at and listened to him. “You’re ashamed of it? A lot of people do it. Obviously it isn’t the healthiest thing but neither is drinking, or weed, or any of it. We all have our vices.”

Austin — 10/10/2023 10:15 PM Austin shrugged a little. “Our mom passed away in 2014,” he explained. “So my sister, is a bit protective. I worry that if she found out she’d get really mad at me,” he explained. “And I don’t want to disappoint her.”

Kaia — 10/10/2023 11:03 PM When his words reach her ears, her back straightens up immediately, “I had no idea. I’m so sorry that you had to go through that,” with her hand still in his, Kaia gives it what she hopes is a comforting squeeze. “I can understand why she would be upset but isn’t it stressful trying to hide something like that?” October 11, 2023

Austin — Yesterday at 2:42 AM Austin nodded a little. “Thank you. Yes, kind of. A lot,” he finally admitted. “Our mom passed from stomach cancer. And I know that if my sister knew that I did this she would be really upset with me for doing something that could..how can I word this?” Austin said aloud. “Doing something that could contribute to that?” He asked.

Kaia — Yesterday at 11:42 AM Kaia’s hand moved over her heart as she frowned, “that is terrible. Cancer is such a horrible disease.” She took in a breath and then looked at him, “I can sort of understand where she’s coming from with that, so I guess I see why you wouldn’t want her to know but keeping secrets never ends well.”

Austin — Yesterday at 2:13 PM “Things were pretty progressed at diagnosis. So, we didn’t have many options,” he admitted. His chest ached as he spoke about her. “After what we both went through with our mom’s illness, I’m afraid she’d be really mad or disappointed. I’m always, always kind of feeling a lot of stress and never really know how to calm myself down. It’s all a confusing cycle.”

Kaia — Yesterday at 4:00 PM “That must have been so difficult, I honestly can not even begin to fathom what it was like to go through that, I’m sorry that you and your family had to. You need to find another outlet for stress relief I think,” Kaia answered. “Although I think quitting is a lot more difficult than it seems.”

Austin — Yesterday at 6:49 PM Austin nodded a little. “I know it’s not good for me it’s just so hard to stop once you’ve started,” he agreed. He shifted a little uncomfortably and reached forward for his wine.

Kaia — Yesterday at 7:59 PM “That’s because nicotine is so addictive, it makes it extremely difficult.” Kaia bit down on the inside of her cheek and shuffled her hair off of her shoulder, “I’m sorry I didn’t mean to overstep with that whole stress relief thing. It really isn’t any of my business.”

Austin — Yesterday at 8:39 PM Austin shook his head a little. “No, no. I appreciate all you’ve said, it feels like you understand,” he said, looking down at his hands. “I just wanted to be straight forward with it in case it’s some kind of dealbreaker for you,” he explained.

Kaia — Yesterday at 8:50 PM “Trying to understand where people are coming from is something I try to do all the time, everyone’s dealt their own hand of cards so you never really know what’s going on in someone else’s life, so I don’t judge,” Kaia explained the very thing that her parents instilled in her from a young age. “It isn’t a dealbreaker. You trying to get rid of me?” The femme joked with him.

Austin — Yesterday at 8:53 PM “You’re a really nice person, you know?” Austin asked. He wasn’t always so used to that. And hearing Kaia’s thoughts and seeing her outlook on how she treated other people felt like a breath of fresh air. “No, no. Not at all. You seem, really good. And really smart and..” he couldn’t quite find his words. “You seem like someone who is dependable and fun and..I’d like to ask you on a date if that’s okay with you,” Austin admitted.

Kaia — Yesterday at 9:12 PM “You are a really nice person, too. But thank you, I know that nice people can be hard to come by in this industry we chose.” Kaia’s encountered many not nice people and it’s why she does her best to be nice to those she meets. “Kindness is a lot more important than some people realize.” People were very jaded by the world and Kaia knew that but she still gave it her best effort. “You’re a very genuine and sincere person from what I can tell, don’t encounter many of those around here either,” she mentioned. “That is more than okay with me, I would love to go out on a date with you,” she knows that her cheeks are flaming red by now but she didn’t try to hide it.

Austin — Yesterday at 9:14 PM Austin had met plenty of people and thankfully a lot of nice ones too but they were few and far between. He tried his best to be the kind of person that his parents and especially his mom had raised him to be. A nervous smile came across his face and he nodded. “Thank you - that’s a relief,” he admitted. He thought things were going well but he didn’t want to get too far ahead of himself. “What kind of things do you like to do? Where would you like to go on a date?” Austin asked.
