Some old concepts for a short web comic about dogs playing flyball that I never finished
Includes characters such as
Patches- mixed breed rescue dog, our main protagonist. Happy go lucky, determined and competitive. The Team leader who is trying to bring his rag-tag group of friends to victory
Cleo: a sassy French bull dog. What she lacks in athleticism she makes up for in personality.
Hank: the labradoodle with the identity crisis. He’s dealing with some internalized toxic masculinity, and must learn to embrace his “girly” poodle parentage
Lemon: a very shy and timid pyr shepherd. She has to learn confidence and conquer her fears to help her team win the “big game”
And on the opposing team:
Echo: border collie and main antagonist. He’s an over-confident bully who is used to being the best. He has to learn to be a better friend and that winning isn’t everything
Hans and Frans: 2 purebred, champion line whippets, imported from Germany. They are always together, difficult to tell apart, and have funny accents.
Guido: the mini American shepherd. He’s just a little guy. Maybe neurotic, perhaps a little unstable. Has taken it upon himself to become Echo’s personal little henchman
The basic plot is that patches must lead his motley crew to victory, through the power of friendship. The dogs r also gay ect ect
I didn't bring Faye because the instructor hadn't answered me about it. When I showed up sans corgi the instructor was disappointed as they meant to tell me yes but forgot. Oh well, next time.
Forte absolutely remembered even though it's been a while. The first thing he did was go to the corner there's been a bucket of balls in. When he found no bucket he danced around the instructor and started jumping up and turning on the ramp.
We did the first run on the larger ramp and he was getting nice turns. The second run we moved him to the box which is significantly smaller. It took him a few tries to stop barreling through the plank and actually put his back feet up on the box.
The instructor was really pleased with his quick progress and kept commenting that he lives to work. At one point I tried to use food as a reward for bringing me the ball. But he spit out the beef lung and was much more interested in shoving the ball into my hand.
He mostly turns to the right. But there a few times where I didn't throw the ball because he hadn't put his back feet up on the box so the next time he tried turning to the left. It's really funny to watch people be so impressed with him over something I consider fairly simple. I'm pretty sure Forte would stand on his head if it meant getting the ball.
But it does make me appreciate him to watch him be so eager to work and try out different solutions. He's such a fun dog and is pretty much all in for anything without becoming upset or frustrated. It also makes me grateful for his good natured disposition. For some of his runs we had another person at practice hold onto him. He was entirely unbothered by having a complete stranger hold him by the collar even though he was amped and wanted to run and get the ball.
I just completely and utterly adore him and all the opportunities to play new games his solid temperament open up for us.
Honestly the great curse of flyball is also its greatest strength: it runs in teams, so you have to make friends to play it.
(Tribble and I tried in Austin but the team we took classes with ghosted us when I tried to figure out if there was like, a way to join and come to practice; it's so hard to figure out how to volunteer and make friends that way sometimes.)
It's not my biggest priority with Matilda, but I really wish Benton had fewer tantrums about BALL BALL THAT IS NOT MINE; @coffee-mage-sans-caffeine has some concerns about whether he could cope with having to run past another dog with a ball without holding one himself, but if he could get past that hurdle I think they'd both have fun. CM is a speed junkie and he loves balls; what's not to love?
ive been on the dog sport grind for a hot minute over the last few weeks. this was from the aaron robbins seminar we had right before UPDIF in which we had baby’s first full lane 🥹
Those who have purchased photos for a dog event/would purchase photos, what is your favorite way to purchase them? One at a time, smaller batches, the entire day? I’d love to hear what y’all have to say!
Having a lazy day can be a double edged sword. Need mental stimulation. Can anyone recommend a miniature poodle breeder with a history of good sport dogs that I can look at? I’m absolutely getting a mini poodle for my next dog in a few years and need to do the research now. I’m an over prepared Virgo.
