Fieseler Fi 167 (TJ+AN), date unknown. This aircraft was selected to be the standard torpedo bomber for service on the never completed Kriegsmarine aircraft carrier Graf Zeppelin. It beat the Arado Ar 195 in the flyoff, however, due to the dithering over the carrier, only 14 were built. For more, see my Facebook group - Eagles Of The Reich

The report on the approximate air support competition between the A-10 and the F-35 appears
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 03/11/2023 - 22:35in Military
A newly emerged report offers some new details about a test that compared the A-10 Warthog attack plane and the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter attack fighter, but raises more questions about the ability of the 5ª generation jet to complete the A-10's approximate air support mission.
The confidential report, completed in February 2022 by the Department of Defense's Testing and Evaluation Office, was recently released with heavy writings to the Government Supervision Project, which sued the Pentagon in a federal court after its FOIA request for the report was denied.
Tumblr media
The report describes the results of an approximate air support flight between the F-35A and the A-10C, which was determined by Congress in the National Defense Authorization Act of 2017 and carried out in 2019.
The test was conducted in “low and medium threat environments” and not in a hostile or high threat environment because the “F-35A, along with the F-35B and F-35C, is being thoroughly evaluated during the IOT&E of the F-35 in high threat scenarios versus modern and dense combat aircraft and surface-to-air missiles, missions for which the A-10C was not designed,” the report said.
Tumblr media
No ground troops participated in the flight, which does not “invalidate the conclusions of this report,” DOT&E wrote in the report. "However, a more dynamic and representative environment may be required for operational testing of these missions to evaluate improvements in the performance of these or any other systems under test."
Many details are hidden in the version released for POGO. For example, it says that the A-10 “allowed more attacks than the typical loading of the F-35A,” but does not reveal how many targets each aircraft hit in the test.
Tumblr media
The A-10 and F-35 involved in the flyoff flew a combined total of 117 and a half hours of flight in 69 missions. A complete analysis of the sorties and flight hours, as well as when and where these tests took place, in the three sets of missions, is seen above.
The essays make it difficult to discern the context of some of the statements. But there are indications that it took more F-35 missions than A-10 missions to fulfill some missions. For example, this half-sentence ("more A-10C sorties would be necessary to attack the same number of targets") is followed by this text: "The number of sorties needed to complete the same mission objectives in contested environments would depend on air defense suppression plans."
Tumblr media
This may result in part of the A-10's ability to carry more ammunition. The attack plane was designed around a huge 30mm GAU-8 cannon that contains 1,350 cartridges of ammunition, while the F-35's 25mm GAU-22 cannon can carry only about 181 cartridges.
Elsewhere, the report noted the ability of the A-10 to fly closer to the targets than the F-35:
youtube
"The test team did not record the inclined range of the target with the generated coordinates, so its effect cannot be evaluated directly. Even so, tactics usually caused A-10C pilots to fly closer to the target than F-35A pilots, which could explain some of the differences in measured location errors. The target location error only affects the use of GPS-aided weapons. In any case, the location error is sufficient to indicate the aiming pod of another aircraft [approximate air support].
Tumblr media

The report also noted that the most recent weapon did not always manage to fire in a straight line. DOT&E told the Pentagon to “fix the F-35A cannon, improve digital communication, video data linkability and interoperability with 4ª generation aircraft, and develop training programs to further improve the effectiveness of the F-35A in these missions.”
Tumblr media
Russ Goemaere, spokesman for the F-35 Joint Program Office, said that the program "improved" the weapon and interoperability of the jet with 4ª generation fighters and said that "they are effective".
In his own analysis, Dan Grazier of POGO wrote: "Despite the heavy essays in the released report, it is clear that the results of these flawed tests disappointed the constituted powers. If the F-35 had been the winner, there would be no doubt that a clear and declarative statement of this fact would have appeared prominently in the initial paragraph of the report."
Tumblr media
The U.S. Air Force did not want to comment on the report, nor did it say whether the leaders of the armed forces tried to prevent the release of the report. A spokesman said that close air support is a mission, not a specific platform.
"The future force will inherently be capable of approximate air support, with multifunctional capabilities to ensure survivability in all scenarios. Although successful in permissive environments, the A-10 will not have the ability to survive in a highly disputed future fight,” said service spokeswoman Ann Stefanek.
Tumblr media
The U.S. military has made intense use of the A-10 in recent decades, moving it to Iraq for multiple conflicts and to Afghanistan against the Taliban. More recently, the U.S. sent Warthogs to the Middle East to deter aggression and prevent the spread of the Israel-Hamas war.
Air Force officers have sought to retire the A-10, which was introduced in 1977 as a Soviet tanker. But their arguments - that money would be better applied to more modern aircraft, that satellite and laser-guided bombs were sufficient for close air support missions - met strong resistance from legislators whose districts housed A-10 or ground troops they protect. Still, the last few years seem to be ending the service of the plane.

When asked about the report, one of the prominent members of the House Armed Services Committee said he is ready to say goodbye to the A-10 - if not its capabilities. Congressman, chairman of the tactical subcommittee on air and ground forces of the HASC, says he is confident that the Air Force will be able to find a way to maintain approximate air support capabilities as it advances to the F-35.

the Fighter Mafia and other LWF proponents
The Request for Proposals issued on 6 January 1972 called for a 20,000-pound (9,100 kg) class air-to-air day fighter with a good turn rate, acceleration and range, and optimized for EPS pre-expander machine manufacturers combat at speeds of Mach 0.6–1.6 and altitudes of 30,000–40,000 feet (9,100–12,000 m). This was the region where USAF studies predicted most future air combat would occur. The anticipated average flyaway cost of a production version was $3 million. This production plan, though, was only notional as the USAF had no firm plans to procure the winner.Five companies responded and in 1972, the Air Staff selected General Dynamics' Model 401 and Northrop's P-600 for the follow-on prototype development and testing phase. GD and Northrop were awarded contracts worth $37.9 million and $39.8 million to produce the YF-16 and YF-17, respectively, with first flights of both prototypes planned for early 1974.
To overcome resistance in the Air Force hierarchy, the Fighter Mafia and other LWF proponents successfully advocated the idea of complementary fighters in a high-cost/low-cost force mix. The "high/low mix" would allow the USAF to be able to afford sufficient fighters for its overall fighter force structure requirements. The mix gained broad acceptance by the time of the flyoff between the prototypes, and would define the relationship of the LWF and the F-15.The first YF-16 was rolled out on 13 December 1973, and its 90-minute maiden flight was made at the Air Force Flight Test Center (AFFTC) at Edwards AFB, California, on 2 February 1974. Its actual first flight occurred accidentally during a high-speed taxi test on 20 January 1974. While gathering speed, a roll-control oscillation caused a fin of the port-side wingtip-mounted missile and then the starboard stabilator to scrape the ground, and the aircraft then began to veer off the runway. The GD test pilot, Phil Oestricher, decided to lift off to avoid crashing the machine, and safely landed it six minutes later. The slight damage was quickly repaired and the official first flight occurred on time.
The YF-16's first supersonic flight was accomplished on 5 February 1974, and the second YF-16 prototype first flew on 9 May 1974. This was followed by the first flights of the Northrop's YF-17 prototypes on 9 June and 21 August 1974, respectively. During the flyoff, the YF-16s completed 330 sorties for a total of 417 flight hours; the YF-17s flew 288 sorties, covering 345 hours.Increased interest would turn the LWF into a serious acquisition program. North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) allies Belgium, Denmark, the Netherlands, and Norway were seeking to replace their F-104G fighter-bombers. In early 1974, they reached an agreement with the U.S. that if the USAF ordered the LWF winner, they would consider ordering it as well. The USAF also needed to replace its F-105 and F-4 fighter-bombers.

Hurricane preparedness, survival, and cleanup tips from a Florida Witch
Hurricanes are really scary. Especially if you aren't used to going through them year after year. Here are some tips to help you before, during, and after the storm.
I've lived in Florida for about 12 collective years. I lived here in 2005 when the big nasty Wilma completely wrecked my island. I've got knowledge, please use it!
Prep for staying put
When they state that your area is going to be impacted, OR its more than a 50% chance of impact, start your prepping. Don't wait. Not only will people be in Panic mode if you wait, the stores will run out of the things you need most. Bread, water and soups are the first things to flyoff the shelves. Not to mention batteries and candles and such.
Make sure you have everything you NEED packed up first. Things you need includes your passports or driver's license birth certificate anything important for your house such as a copy of your lease or utility bills or deeds Etc prescription copies and things like that. This does not include the $200 painting hanging on your wall that's what insurance is for.
Put all of those items double bagged in gallon-sized zip-top plastic bags and put them with your suitcase and the stuff you can grab at a moment's notice if needed.
Next thing to have is enough water for 3-5 days PER PERSON. Let's be real, none of us drinks the recommended amount of water, but we should still have it on hand. You're gonna be hot when the power is out, so you'll drink more. Gallon jugs, small water bottles are great. You can also fill up pots and pans from the tap if your water is relatively drinkable (most places should have decent filtration) and have those ready to go for pets or for emergencies.
Also, fill your tub or tubs with water. Use this for bathing, washing dishes or cleaning up spills that occur while you're waiting out the storm.
Food: most fresh fruit and vegetables can handle a couple days without refrigeration, have those on hand in moderation. Leafy greens and broccoli need to stay chilled so avoid buying these if you can. Cucumbers, carrots, bananas, Apples, oranges, tomato and avocado are really good for you, relatively affordable for most budgets and can survive without being cold.
Canned goods. Avoid Campbell's concentrated soup unless you plan on having extra water needed to make them not taste like pure salt. Have a can opener that works by hand. If you wouldn't eat it normally when times are fine, don't force yourself to buy it because a checklist says so. Buy what you like and you'll be fine. Keep in mind that whatever you eat will most likely be cold, so avoid cream based soups and chowder. Those just sound gross cold.
Nuts, dried fruit, applesauce, and chips are good snack food that don't need special storage.
Don't forget to grab extra stuff for your kids and pets too.
Weather proof your house. Plywood or shutters on the exterior, towels and plastic on the interior with the blinds shut tight. your windows become dangerous glass bombs during a storm. Don't take any risks.
Sandbag for your doors. You can make these yourself with cat litter, flour, salt, etc. Youtube has tutorials.
Prepping to evac
Just because you're leaving your home, doesn't mean you don't need the above. You do, but it needs to go in the car with you. Prioritizing what's actually important is key here.
Your important documents need to be loaded in the car first. Put them in the glove box now.
All the food and water you've got from the above, load it in the car next. If you have pets, load their crates if and only if you can still get yourself, your kids, and whoever else in plus their suitcase of necessities. If you know you have a massive pooch and he can't fit his crate and your stuff in, leave the crate behind. Put his tags on his collar and when it's time to go, load him in with the family and have someone who is capable, have a massive lap friend.
Here's what to pack in your bags to take with you: clothes for a week, socks and Undergarments for 2 weeks, tennis shoes, workboots if you have them, any flat, comfortable closed toe shoe is key.
Personal hygiene.this doesn't mean your makeup and your blow dryer and your vanity mirror. This means toothbrush, toothpaste, razor and shave cream, hair brush, hair ties, eye glasses, etc. If you have room after you pack all that. Great, bring what fits. But pack for SURVIVAL before anything. "But I can't live without my urban decay lipstick collection!" Yes, YOU FUCKING CAN.
Now that your getaway car is loaded up, protect the house. Do the plywood and stuff listed above.
People tend you your dishwasher is water tight. They lied. HOW EVER dishwashers are still great to keep valuables that don't come with you in one place. They're reinforced with surrounding cabinetry and their doors often lock shut, making it hard to open without unlocking. Waterproof your valuables, place them inside and if you do happen to get flooded, you'll know you can locate all your items together in one place and hope for the best.
Keep in mind, items are replaceable, your memories and lives are not.
Tell family you can trust your evac plan. And tell a neighbor too. Cell phones may go out and it's good to know someone knows where you're at.
When your home is secured and your car is prepped, IF THERE IS TIME, check on any disabled or elderly people in your neighborhood. Make sure they're evacuating or have a plan.
Put all valuable paintings, furniture, electronics etc on top of counters, in plastic bins, in the tub, make it hard for water to get to them.
Before you leave, manually turn off your power. Do it. Your house could be full of water when the power comes on, and that means water in your outlets which means fire. I speak from experience here folks. Turn off your power yourself. Throw out or take the food in your fridge and freezer. Turn off your power.
Lock your doors. Sand bag your exit and head on towards safety
After the storm
When emergency services or whoever says it's safe to return, you may return. Don't badger them, don't yell and scream. They know you want to go home, but if there is a powerline down on the road by your house, it's there job to tell you to wait. Let them keep you safe.
If you stayed, wait until at minimum 24 hours after the storm passes to venture outside. Power lines, trees, and other storm debris could make it dangerous to venture out. Take the dog out if you need to, but stay off the roads unless it's a life threatening emergency.
Bring protective clothing if you know there's been flooding. Closed toed shoes are key here, as are face masks and gloves. There's feces in that water which means feces in your house. Be safe.
Most likely if your home was flooded, you'll have to remove drywall to prevent mold.
Restock your hurricane kit for the next one with anything you consumed in the storm. Beware that even if you are able to get home for cleanup and damage control, supplies may be short for a few days so be prepared.
Good luck my friends! Stay safe

Chandra and I had our best weekend yet at our club’s recent USDAA trial! Q-wise we qualified 3/6, which is the most we’ve ever gotten in one weekend so far.  😆 Most of our misses were once again “just one thing”, one bar in Jumpers and one bar in our second Standard run and I’m pretty sure it was her tail that got that one. We also our first zero-point Snooker run, so there’s that!! I’m honestly surprised it hasn’t happened sooner lol. This video includes our two Standards and one Jumpers run, doesn’t include Gamblers or Pairs (both Qs) and our super-short Snooker run.
Performance-wise, there were also lots of great things, including 3/3 stopped dogwalks!! That alone makes the weekend a winner. Also perfect weaves, lots of tough bars staying up, only one off-course which was definitely my fault, startlines still pretty good. Chandra is starting to tug on her leash when we go in the ring, next will be to see if I can get her to tug at the end of the run, which we worked on a little bit during Pairs since we were the first dog this time and had to wait in the ring while our partner ran, so Chandra’s toy was even more delayed.
Things to work on:
Startlines. I said they are still pretty good but they are getting a bit pushy. I need to not feel rushed and treat it more like training with not accepting any movement. I have been making sure Chandra is sitting still when I release her but have gotten a bit messy about ignoring movement while I’m walking out.
Teeter. No flyoffs this weekend but it was pretty sketchy again.
Aframe. One missed in Gamblers, one questionable in Standard. Chandra has been hitting high for a while and I did put the box back on in practice recently.
Table. We are losing a bit of time with Chandra taking a few seconds to lie down. I can hope the table will just disappear as an obstacle but as long as it’s here, we need to work on this. I have been putting the table in more practice sequences as well as sometimes using it as a starting point.
Bars. Chandra is not knocking a lot of bars, but we’re definitely stuck in One Bar Wonder-land. Particular problem-bars still include tight turns on a slice approach and the first bar, among others. Chandra actually hasn’t knocked the first bar in several trials, until she knocked it on our Snooker run yesterday (and looking at the video I think that is because she scooted a bit closer while I was leading out and then she was too close to keep it up, so also a startline issue). I need to play around more with setup distance. As well as revisiting/continuing our homework from our summer jumping class.
And that’s just a partial list, but the main takeaways from this weekend.
@quichehound @meimogui there is more of a novel for you this time! :P
