Baya Mahieddine (born Fatima Haddad) was a self-taught Algerian folklore artist. Born in Bordj El Kiffan in 1931, Baya used gouaches to illustrate her signature bold women in colourful dresses and veils, often surrounded by vegetation, dreamlike animals and musical instruments. Orphaned by the age of five, Baya was raised by her grandmother. Then, as an 11-year-old, she was adopted by Marguerite Camina Benhoura, the wealthy French woman and judge’s wife who employed Baya’s grandmother as a housekeeper. Benhoura became Bayaʼs teacher and patron, but some reports also suggest Baya worked as a servant in the house. Bayaʼs extraordinary body of work caught the attention of art dealer Aime Maeght and age 16 she had her first exhibition in Paris in 1947. She later learned pottery in France and crossed paths with Picasso and Matisse, who were so inspired by her colourful work they created similar pieces of their own. In 1952 Baya returned to Algeria, wedded in an arranged marriage and subsequently ceased painting until 1962. This period of her life coincided with the Algerian War of Independence from 1954 until 1962. Following her return to painting, she exhibited her work in Algiers and Paris and continued doing so until her death in 1998. Baya once said that she painted happy scenes as a result of the unhappiness in her life. Angels have featured in many artists' artworks over the centuries so I'm in good company. I think being brought up as a Roman Catholic, attending Mass when I was a child, surrounded by angels in the stonework high above our heads and in the Victorian paintings coupled with the magnificent, sometimes terrifying beings we heard about through the Bible stories must have made a big impression on my young mind. My angels tend to be nice. Whether they're praying for my fallen state (1. Fragmentation), carrying me away from my alcohol hell (2. Redemption) or dancing with a beautiful young man that I knew who was paraplegic (4.Dancing with Angels) or leading folk out of the abyss (5.The Bridge). I know this little character is going to appear in my next doodle. A friend of mine who worked with teenagers in a secondary school here in the UK said last year was the worst she'd ever seen - kids with bulimia, anorexia, sex, drug addictions, trying desperately to fill a void.
