The Twilight Drive-In was not quite what Ruby had expected. She’d entered the truck, only to see Fred driving and after an awkward conversation about Archie’s lack of a permit, where the girl and his father laughed about it, the three worked out an easy plan. Fred would drive to his office, since he needed to get some work done, still, and Ruby would take the wheel from there. At the end of the movie, they were supposed to call Fred and see if he was done, in order to pick him up. Then, the Andrews could drop her off home before calling it a night. It all seemed like a solid plan to the teens. Both of them were glad that they wouldn’t be left to beg Archie’s friend Jughead to get them a couple of chairs once Fred drove off.

When they got to the Drive-In, Ruby took her time looking around. She’d never had a proper date, much less an occasion which would take her to a place like that. The only movies she’d watched was with Mattie or her father, either in the girl’s room or at the cinema. And then, Mattie had insisted on huddling together in a couple’s seat like two idiots, because she’d been too curious as to what booking a space like that meant for her own good. Afterwards, it had become tradition for the two girls to sit in a loveseat at the cinema, just for kicks. But, the Twilight Drive-In was definitely not a cinema.

Archie had carefully instructed Ruby where to drive the family truck, which she only struggled with for a bit due to the stick that was a tad different from her trusty old Mustang. And, once they pulled into the southernmost part of Riverdale, he directed her to get off Main Street and enter the small parking lot in front of a large screen. Sure enough, there was a sign which spelled out that evening’s showing, Mamma Mia, right in front of the turn. As Ruby parked the truck, turning the front towards the small booth in the back with drinks and popcorn like Archie requested, she had a chance to look around some more. In essence, it was a parking lot. There were a few more cars and a couple of motorcycles in the back, people buzzing around before the showing. But, other than the booth and a large screen on the other side, it was just that, a parking lot.

“Popcorn?” Archie asked, nodding towards the booth.

“Oh, yeah.” Ruby eagerly agreed and the two friends walked over, Archie instantly perking up when he saw the server behind the counter.

“Hey, Jug!” he greeted the boy in an odd beanie, which Ruby was certain seemed familiar to her for some reason. “This is Ruby, who I told you about. The girl from the Wolfe house,” the boy behind the counter examined her with a surprisingly analytical look in his pale eyes. But, he didn’t seem hostile. “Ruby, Jughead.”

“The one who’s writing a book?”

“Novel.” Both boys instantly corrected.

“Right,” Ruby nodded sheepishly. “It’s very nice to meet you, Jughead. I’ve heard a lot about you,” the boy gave his friend a look which seemed accusing, more than anything. “I promise that I pressed him for details and that everything he told me was good.” The girl tried to diffuse the tension.

“Um, sure, yeah,” Jughead sounded a little awkward. “Welcome to Riverdale.” He didn’t seem to mean it. Regardless, Ruby chose to take the high road there.

“It would be awesome if you could join us for the movie, unless you’re working the whole evening?” She asked, looking between him and Archie. “I got only one side of the story, after all,” Ruby gave Jughead a mischievous smile. “I’d love to hear some embarrassing tales about this one.” She nudged Archie with her elbow and, instantly, the atmosphere changed. Jughead gave her a smirk right back.

For the life of her, the teen didn’t know what she’d done to cause that kind of reaction from the tall boy. At times he would be doing their usual push and pull, piling on ridiculous nicknames that made fun of her height, and then, he would be frowning angrily down at her and grunting out one-word answers to her eager questions. Ruby was definitely miffed. But, also, intrigued. She couldn’t help her own curiosity sometimes. She liked things with character, after all.

One would think that, being a former army man, he wouldn’t enjoy the 4th of July. However, ever since Ruby was aware of herself, Jo became utterly giddy during the holiday. He bought so many fireworks that they barely managed to set them all off in their backyard during the night. True enough, he jumped whenever someone else used their own colorful ammunition, his hand flying to his side, where his gun used to be. Yet, he still set up his own arsenal and set it off with complete glee.

“Are we going to war?” Ruby asked, leaning in the doorway and watching her father jump around the car, deciding which monstrosity to take out first. He looked up at her and smiled wide.

“Oh, we’re going to war, honey,” Jo shot back. “I’m going to announce to the whole town that I’m back in my all former glory.” Ruby shook her head, but walked down the front steps regardless, Chili following. He eagerly rushed to the car, sniffing and trying to see if anything inside was meant for him. Jo took out a ball from the front seat, showed it to the eager dog and then chucked it as far as he could towards Fox Forest. Chili tore after it, wheezing in happiness.

“You’ve unleashed the monster.” Ruby chuckled, grabbing one box of fireworks and taking it to the porch.

“He likes it and we both know it.” Jo retaliated, carrying his own load of colorful tubes.

It wasn’t her fault that the others were cowards and couldn’t pass her maze of horror doom and get to the good candy.

“They were spineless,” Ruby grumbled. “You’re supposed to scare them on Halloween.” Jo sighed as they continued to carry fireworks to the porch.

“Not enough to cry,” he was using his fatherly voice. “And certainly not enough to make them avoid our home on their second run.”

“Hey, you were happy eating all the candy.” She shot back.

“That I was,” Jo grinned, letting sleeping dogs lie for once. “Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have a date with my workshop.” And he bounced away with a devilish smirk. Ruby slapped her forehead, knowing that her father wasn’t up to any good.

Ruby’s suspicions were confirmed when Chili started barking like mad, running at the iron gates of their property that afternoon. She poked her head out of the window, seeing the Sheriff’s car parked out front.

“Chili! Be cool!” The girl shouted and rushed down the stairs to greet the policeman. By the time she had the door open, the Sheriff was already walking up the front steps of their porch.

“Jo’s secret shack of wonders.” Ruby introduced in a deadpan voice when they reached the small building, similar to a garage, with closed doors and an ominous sound of metal being cut coming from inside.

“God, he hasn’t changed at all.” Sheriff Keller sighed. Then, he pounded on the door with his fist, making them shake.

“He’s worse, if my mom’s stories are anything to go by,” Ruby laughed. “I’ll leave you to it. If you’d like coffee after that, I’ll be at the house.” She tossed over her shoulder. The last thing she heard before calling Chili to come back with her was the Sheriff asking her father if he was mad. Ruby could answer that question without thinking. Yes, on the 4th of July her father was quite mad.

Ruby had texted Toni first, asking if the girl had any plans for the holiday. And, she’d gotten a quick reply, as always, saying how the purple haired Serpent was planning on setting off some fireworks down at the quarry with the guys. Regardless, Ruby invited her over if she wanted to hang out later. Toni didn’t make any promises, saying that the guys usually brought booze and stayed the night at the quarry, not being sober enough to ride until morning. For some reason, the image of Fangs, Toni and Sweet Pea drunk got Ruby giggling.

Next, the girl texted Archie and the new contact in her phone, Jughead. The former never replied, but the latter told her that he could come over if she wanted to pick him up at Pop’s, because he was on foot and the Wolfe house was on the other side of the town. Ruby readily agreed, after yelling to Jo that she was having a friend over for the evening. The man offered only a muffled agreement from his workshop, hammering stopping for a second. So, Ruby grabbed the keys to the Mustang and allowed Chili to hop into the front seat.

Entering Pop’s reminded her of all the times she’d gone there with Sweet Pea. She had to open the door herself this time, after all. The teen easily found Jughead on the far left of the small diner, sitting with his laptop open. And, instantly, her memory clicked into place.

“I remember where I know that beanie from!” Ruby exclaimed, sliding into the seat on the other side of Jughead without a proper greeting. He looked over the top of the laptop, face illuminated by the light of his screen.

“Hello to you, too,” he sarcastically remarked. “Wait, you know my beanie from somewhere?”

“Yeah, I came here with one of the guys working on our house,” Ruby chose to leave Sweet Pea’s name out of the whole mess. She’d gotten the feeling that Jughead wasn’t a big fan of the biker gang. “I remember thinking that it’s a cool beanie when I saw you sitting here.” She laughed, shaking her head.

“Oh, um,” the boy was as awkward as always. “If you say so.” He replied with a small shrug. Ruby nodded.

“Super cool,” she told him. “Dad and I were gonna get some burgers for dinner, have you already eaten?”

“Do you really need to ask me if I want food?” Jughead laughed, finally in his element.

“Silly me.” Ruby hopped up, waving off his offer to pay for dinner. She just asked him what he wanted and went to the counter to order takeaway.

Citizens receive tax incentives for collecting carbon.

India has limited the carbon emissions from agriculture and bovine cultivation through the help of the US’s advanced biomass cultivation. There is a specific strand of seaweed that prevents the production of methane in the cows’ digestion, created by a canny organic chemist. While leading the world in meat and dairy production, they have found a way to use sustainable irrigation techniques, thanks to agricultural scientists in China.

One of the members interrupts: “This is all cool and well, but how are we managing waste in 2100?”

The AI continues: With movements toward space, we have developed methods to incinerate waste off-planet. As a result, geothermal energy is projected to–

“Show us the Sankey diagram. I need to see the energetic breakdown,” one of the members interjects.

“Wait, so this is supposed to be the absolute best case scenario? Did none of you see what the AI skipped over? The violent intermediacy of this ‘utopia?’” another demanded.

“Show us RCP 8.5!”

As the AI attempted to render the ‘business as usual’ pathway, the program struggled to leave a message before crashing: ‘time is running out.’

Viviendo y viajando por India

Hola.

Comienzo a escribir sobre mi experiencia en India sentada en la silla vieja de un balcón polvoso y un poco abandonado en un apartamento en la ciudad de Ahmedabad. El lugar donde he estado viviendo las últimas 5 semanas. El lugar al que he venido con la intención de aprender, desaprender, de alguna manera encontrar inspiración y motivación.

Esta aventura comenzó hace un par de meses cuando conocí a la fundadora de Design for Change. Una mujer apasionada por la vida y con mucha energía positiva. Cuando la escuchaba contar su historia en el set de grabación solo podía pensar, “quisiera tener una historia así que contar”. Hace 18 años Kiran Bir Sethi construyó lo que se ha convertido ahora en un gran imperio, The Riverside School. Una escuela en India a la que llaman el pequeño oasis enmedio del caos, un lugar donde todos creen en él yo puedo y donde los niños son los protagonistas de historias de éxito y superación.

— Cuéntame más de Riverside ¿crees que los niños aprenden mejor con estas metodologías?, le pregunté. — Te puedo contar muchas historias pero es mejor si vienes a India, me contestó con una sonrisa de oreja a oreja y con una mirada tan cálida que nunca olvidaré. Ir a India, era una frase que nunca me había formulado, una idea que nunca había llegado a mi cabeza pero… ¿porque no?

El 11 de julio comencé mi viaje a un país del que había leído mucho en los previos días y al que iba con muchos nervios, ansias e ilusión. Al aterrizar en Ahmedabad, una ciudad gigante con millones de habitantes y con un potencial de crecimiento sorprendente, el choque cultural fue muy fuerte. El ruido de los coches era ensordecedor pero más que eso diría que estresante. No estaría exagerando al decir que habían unos 100 taxistas esperando en la salida del aeropuerto para ofrecer sus servicios a los viajeros. Tomé un taxi directo a Riverside, después de más de 15 horas de viaje Riverside sería mi primera parada en India.

En una zona restringida de Ahmedabad, ahí estaba la escuela de la que todo el mundo está hablando. Unas semanas atrás habían recibido un premio de las manos de Hillary Clinton y la fotografía estaba colgada en el pasillo de entrada a la escuela. Pero no era un pasillo común y corriente, nada es así en esta escuela. Todo es muy colorido, lleno de vida y paz. Todo correctamente ordenado, casi parecía que cada cosa había sido colocada en su lugar con un propósito. La experiencia en Riverside fue enriquecedora, inspiradora y maravillosa.

Vivir en India ha sido la aventura más retadora que he tenido. Estar en una cultura totalmente nueva para mi, conocer sus costumbres y tradiciones y vivirlas. Estaba determinada a vivir en Ahmedabad y no solamente ser una turista y en la línea con este deseo las siguientes 5 semanas se llenaron de experiencias únicas. Utilicé el transporte público, los viajes en tuc tuc eran lo más extremo, incluso podía pedirlos desde la aplicación de Uber. Comí solo comida típica, salía a caminar por las tardes, visité varios templos, fui a los festivales y al famoso Gandhi Ashram (antigua casa de Gandhi) que le da un ambiente de paz a esta ruidosa ciudad. Me tomó un par de días acostumbrarme al incesante ruido de los coches sonando sus bocinas cada 3 segundos, al monstruoso tráfico, al clima caluroso y húmedo, al acento indio y a la comida tan condimentada. Pero solo fue eso, un par de días.

Vivía en un apartamento con otras 5 personas, todos estábamos visitando Riverside School y nos hospedamos en la Guest House. Cada quien estaba en India con un propósito distinto pero todos estábamos allí para conocer Riverside. Chloe de Francia, Beth de Reino Unido, Neill de Irlanda, Antonio de España y Gayathri de India. Compartimos 5 semanas juntos. Comíamos en la escuela, una de las madres vendía su comida así que todos aprovechamos para evitar cocinar, básicamente porque no teníamos mucho tiempo para hacerlo. 40 rupias el desayuno y 60 el almuerzo, lo que equivalía a 1 euro diario. Por la noche Gayathri siempre cocinaba la cena, nosotros intentábamos ayudarle pero estaba muy claro que ella era la dueña de la cocina. Gayu sabía utilizar todos los instrumentos que son un tanto distintos a los que yo conocía, sabía cómo utilizar las especies y también sabía cocinar comida vegetariana. Ella era la mejor en la cocina y cuando no estaba intentábamos cocinar (era nuestra oportunidad para usar menos chile) o íbamos a comer al food truck que estaba a un par de minutos de nuestro apartamento. La última vez que fuimos al Food Truck llovió tanto que ya no encontrábamos el sentido en evitar mojarnos así que decidimos bailar bajo la lluvia y caminar a casa cantando y saltando en cada charco que veíamos, un chico que pasaba con una carreta se nos unió a nuestra felicidad y comenzó a seguirnos y a cantar con nosotros.

El primer fin de semana en India fui a la procesión de Rath Yatra un evento religioso que se celebra cada año para honrar a su dios Jagannath. Era impresionante ver la cantidad de personas en las calles esperando que pasara la procesión para poder honrar a sus dioses. Iniciando el desfile habían elefantes con decoraciones muy coloridas en sus caras, camellos, por lo menos unas 100 carrozas y mucho personal de la policía. Había un equipo especial para controlar los elefantes en caso de que algo saliera mal pero ellos están muy acostumbrados a este tipo de eventos.

La procesión duró todo el día, nuestra intención era comenzar a verla desde la mitad del trayecto pero había tanta gente que quedamos atrapados en un mar de personas. El calor sofocante y mi estatura no me permitían ver absolutamente nada, así que decidimos movernos al final del desfile para ver cuando llegasen allí las carrozas. Al estilo indio nos subimos 4 personas en una motocicleta y después de unos minutos ya estábamos al final del desfile. En el camino vi muchas cosas que seguramente no habria visto como turista. Pasamos por el viejo Ahmedabad, donde hay barrios muy pobres y familias viviendo con lo mínimo. Mientras esperábamos, muchas familias llegaron y se sentaron en el suelo a comer, habían muchos vendedores en las calles y los policías muy amigables se acercaban a platicar con nosotros. — “¿De dónde eres?”, una pregunta que me costaba mucho contestar. — Honduras, era siempre mi primera respuesta pero al ver sus caras de duda, añadía “pero estoy viviendo en España”. La conversación inmediatamente giraba hacia España, un país más familiar para ellos, desde entonces comencé a explicar dónde queda Honduras y a veces mostraba un mapa para aclarar que centroamérica no es Estados Unidos.

Los siguientes fines de semana estuve viajando a ciudades cerca de Ahmedabad. Mount Abu, un lugar precioso en el estado de Rajasthan. Viajé con unos amigos franceses que conocí gracias a Riverside y nos quedamos en un hotel en la montaña. Estábamos muy contentos de poder respirar aire fresco y alejarnos un poco de la ruidosa ciudad, o eso pensábamos. La mañana siguiente el ruido del tráfico nos despertó y comenzamos nuestro viaje a la montaña. Para poder subir la montaña necesitábamos un guía, así que Charles nos acompañó en la caminata de 4 horas. En el camino disfrutamos mucho la conversación y casi al finalizar el recorrido nos detuvimos en lo más alto de la montaña con vistas impresionantes y dedicamos 15 minutos a meditar. Charles nos contó que es algo que él acostumbra hacer y quería compartirlo con nosotros. Puso música muy relajante y cada quien busco un lugar donde sentarse. Durante un cuarto de hora estuvimos en silencio. Parecían mucho más que 15 minutos, me sorprendió lo lento que puede pasar el tiempo cuando te detienes a pensar y estar en silencio. Cuando acabó el tiempo de meditación, aprovechamos a hacer un par de fotografías y seguimos el recorrido hasta llegar al final donde nos estaba esperando nuestro conductor. Tuvimos un guia y un conductor por el fin de semana pero creanme que fue uno de los viajes más baratos que he hecho, el precio de todo en India es impresionantemente bajo. Charles nos invito a su casa a tomar Chai y también quería mostrarnos una serpiente que había encontrado hace un par de días en la montaña. Mount Abu es bellísimo, Charles nos explico que era uno de los destinos turísticos favoritos de los británicos en el tiempo que India era una colonia y no me quedaba duda del porque. Habían muchos templos, la flora y fauna eran impresionantes y el lago le daba un encanto especial a esta ciudad.

Ahmedabad-Jaipur-Agra fue la ruta para el penúltimo fin de semana en India. Aunque sabía que Agra era un destino muy turístico y que probablemente sería lo más loco viajar allí sola, realmente quería conocer el Taj Mahal, así que no dude en hacerlo. Comencé mi viaje volando hacia Jaipur y me quedé ahí la primera noche en un hostal para mochileros, aunque viajaba sola ese día conocí muchas personas. Para mi sorpresa, habian muchos españoles y latinoamericanos viajando por Agra y muchos de los locales, especialmente los vendedores, hablan español. Conocí dos chicas australianas que estaban en India para aprender Yoga, una chica estadounidense y una de Filipinas que también estaban viajando solas y dos chicas españolas que estarían viajando por India todo el verano. Me encantó ver que muchas chicas estaban viajando solas a pesar de todo lo que se puede leer en internet acerca del país. Personalmente, en ningún momento me sentí insegura y los locales intentaban ayudarme cada vez que se los pedía. Nunca me enfermé con la comida de la calle o los restaurantes y las personas eran muy curiosas, algunos me pidieron tomarse fotos conmigo, es algo que hacen con todos los turistas. No disfrutaba mucho ser el centro de atención pero con el tiempo aprendí a ignorar las miradas.

La primera noche en el hostal, el staff preparó una clase de bollywood dance, el baile básicamente consistía en mover cada parte de tu cuerpo con muchísima intensidad, no podíamos parar de reirnos. Al dia siguiente tome un tren hacia Agra, era la primera vez que tomaba un tren en India. Me sentí muy contenta cuando logré descifrar la señalización de los vagones y al entrar pude encontrar fácilmente mi asiento. Se notaba que era mi primera vez en un sleeper train así que los pasajeros me ayudaron a encontrar las almohadas y sábanas. El tren consiste en camarotes de tres niveles en los que puedes dormir durante el viaje. Al llegar a Agra, después de insistir a un taxista que dejara de seguirme porque ya estaba esperando mi Uber y no necesitaba que me llevara a ningún lado, puede comenzar el camino al Taj Mahal. El conductor no hablaba inglés pero no me preocupaba porque la mayoría no lo hace y así había estado viajando todo ese tiempo. Así que en medio de señas y traductor, pude llegar al Taj Mahal. Mientras caminaba hacia la entrada, no parecía real, vendedores y guías turísticos que estaban en la entrada del monumento se abalanzaron a ofrecerme cosas pero estaba tan asombrada de estar allí que no recuerdo haberles contestado, simplemente camine viendo a mi alrededor y seguramente con una cara de asombro y felicidad.

Tenía frente a mi una de las maravillas del mundo. Tal como se ve en las fotografías; grande, blanco, resplandeciente, majestuosos, el Taj Mahal. Al igual que todo en India, estaba repleto de personas, hacia muchísimo calor y el cielo estaba muy despejado por lo que se podía sentir el sol, diferente a Ahmedabad que estuvo nublado durante casi toda mi estadía. Termine mi visita a Agra cenando en la azotea de un hotel con vistas al Taj Mahal. Me impresionó mucho ver las casas pequeñas y los edificios viejos alrededor de este impresionante monumento que fue construido hace casi 400 años y tomo 23 años en construirse. El Taj Mahal es básicamente una tumba para una de las esposas del antiguo emperador musulmán. La historia cuenta que entre ellos había una historia de amor muy especial y cuando ella murió él quedó devastado y se propuso construirle a su amada la tumba más hermosa que el mundo haya visto. Anteriormente el interior y exterior del Taj Mahal estaba cubierto de piedras preciosas, muchas de ellas han sido robadas y su construcción dejo al emperador y a la ciudad en una fuerte crisis económica.

Jaipur, mi ciudad favorita. La ciudad más limpia y ordenada que vi en India, la llaman la ciudad rosa porque muchos de sus edificios antiguos están construidos con arenisca roja y rosa. Me sorprendió muchísimo el Hawa Mahal, creo que estuve ahí unas 4 horas, es un palacio construido para que las mujeres reales pudieran observar la vida cotidiana de las calles de la ciudad sin ser vistas. El edificio está lleno de ventanas y desde ellas se podía ver hacia la calle principal de Jaipur. Ese día la cobertura móvil dejó de funcionar así que hice todo mi recorrido caminando y con google maps offline, disfruté mucho pasar el dia caminando por Jaipur y no quería enfrentarme al regateo y explicaciones eternas a los conductores para poder llegar a mis destinos. Visite el museo del City Palace, probablemente el mejor museo que he visto en India, tenía explicaciones de todas las exhibiciones (si has visitado museos en India sabrás porque esto me sorprendió) y casi todo estaba traducido al inglés y muy bien conservado. Por la tarde visité más museos, me detuve un momento para pasear por el central park y tome una limonada en un puesto de café con un amigo que conocí en Jaipur (generalmente habría sido un café pero el clima no estaba para café).

Esa noche regresaba a Ahmedabad así que volví al hostal por mi mochila y antes de irme fuimos a cenar a una azotea todos los huéspedes del hostal. Viajé en el tren toda la noche y a la mañana siguiente ya estaba en Ahmedabad. Me encantó la sensación de estar volviendo a casa, cuando has estado un par de semanas en un lugar nuevo este comienza a sentirse como tu nuevo hogar.

India es una aventura, cuando me refiero al país lo describo como loco, desordenado, caótico, ruidoso..., pero es una aventura que vale la pena vivir. Es un país que volvería a visitar sin duda. No es un destino turístico para relajarse sino para descubrir, aprender, salir de la zona de confort y volver a casa con muchas reflexiones, pensamientos e ideas.

Final Evaluation

My design decisions in this project were informed and motivated by the research I did on devnagri Hindi type design as well as the shapes and forms found in Indian street food along with the colours.

I started off wanting to create a typeface inspired by the hand painted type often found on trucks and shop billboards in India combined with design elements found in Indo-Islamic architecture.
