Type of Venue: Cafe Cuisine: Modern Australian food Highly Recommended: Smoothie Bowls (cacao & banana one especially), Turmeric Scrambled Eggs, Kale Bowl
Only a couple of months old, Cornerstone of Northcote is a cute corner cafe offering trendy urban vibes and delicious health-conscious fare. A cafe haven for locals and nearby tradies, the small interior seating area is reminiscent of a hole-in-the-wall coffee shop, complimented by slide-open windows looking out onto the street, and a couple of tables set up on the front footpath. Staff are friendly and vibrant, further adding to the hipster-cool ambience.
On a given day, it is nice to see one of the co-owners hanging out with their young kids, emphasising the family-friendly nature of Cornerstone of Northcote. The second venue owned and operated by the owner-couple, their first venue sits at the base of Mount Buller, specialising in Thai-tapas cuisine; quite a different scene, yet this may suggest their versatility within the hospitality industry.
At Cornerstone of Northcote, the menu focuses on seasonal, locally sourced produce, used in ‘simple and honest‘ food. Cornering the social media market, all of their dishes arrive impeccably presented and generously portioned, providing value-for-money to deserving coffee drinkers and brunch fanatics. One look at the size of the cafe and of the kitchen, and you will be immediately impressed by the ability of the chef and floor staff to operate in such small confines, yet still consistently produce the quality of food and drinks that they do.
Upon sitting down at one of their individual 2-person tables, the customer is thrust into a position of decision-making with both the food and drinks menu laid out on the table, alongside a third piece of laminated paper explaining the health benefits and properties of various ingredients and chemical elements found throughout most of their menu. Indeed, this is a clever way to educate the customer on what goes into the food that they eat, and hopefully translates into healthier eating choices on a daily basis.
Starting with the liquid menu, alcohol seekers will be pleased with the standard range of wines, beers and cocktails on offer, whilst those seeking an energy-boosting drink can stick to the ‘Hot’, ‘Bottled’ and ‘Blended Drinks’ categories. Cacao ‘Chilli Choc’ delivers a spicy zing that comfortably warms the back of the throat, whilst the Berry smoothie tastes subtly sweet with a tart berry flavour providing contrast and balance.
Cacao ‘Chilli Choc’ ($5.00)
Blended Drink – Berry ($12.50)
Giving the customer plenty of choice, three types of ‘Smoothie Bowls’ are featured on the menu, ranging from fruity to healthily decadent. Going for the latter, we immensely enjoyed the combination of cacao, banana, peanut butter, dates, yoghurt, granola, chia and amaretti crumb. Nailing a variety of textural contrast with the nuts, seeds and crushed biscuits, the overwhelming taste of banana persists with each mouthful, which may be enjoyable for some (i.e. me), but could potentially be a bit too much for those who are less inclined towards the flavour of banana.
Smoothie Bowl – cacao and banana ($14.00)
A seemingly popular choice on this Thursday morning amongst fellow customers, the Turmeric Scrambled Eggs arrive piled generously on rye-grain bread, interspersed with kipfler potatoes, oyster mushrooms, banana peppers and leeks, finished with an injectable smoky chilli sauce prodded into the scrambled egg mound. Quite mild in spice, potentially more chilli used in the sauce, or a larger quantity of sauce provided in the syringe could further elevate the exciting flavours of this dish. Other than that, the dish as a whole is immensely satisfying, with a significantly detectable amount of turmeric successfully heroing these humble scrambled eggs.
Turmeric Scrambled Eggs ($18.00)
Seeking more of a lunch option, the handful of choices include vegetable-focused health bowls and protein-friendly dishes. Although appearing modest in size, the Kale Bowl certainly packs a punch when it comes to taste, and its ability to fill the stomach. A mixture of cooked kale, cauliflower and toasted coconut forms the base of this bowl, served alongside quinoa, nuts, seeds, broccoli, broccoli sprouts, a tofu and mustard cream, and moringa dust. The inclusion of broccoli sprouts and moringa are potent antioxidants and anti-inflammatories, particularly given the fact that the broccoli sprouts are perfectly cooked to a vibrant green colour, thus remaining crunchy and retaining its various health properties. Don’t brush aside the tofu and mustard cream, whose textural yet creamy consistency helps to tie all of these addictive ingredients together.
Kale Bowl ($18.00)
The clean, healthy-eating concept that Cornerstone of Northcote promotes is just what we need in today’s food-obsessed society. They prove that it is possible to get excited about healthy food and drinks without compromising on flavour, texture or enjoyment. Their display of daily-changing treats in the front cabinet also shows that you can still enjoy sweets without doing too much damage to your body, with gluten-free and vegan options also available. So, the next time you’re in Northcote, come and relax in this cosy cafe located on a Northcote corner.
Note: I dined as a guest of Cornerstone of Northcote. Thank you to the staff and owners for their generous hospitality throughout our experience.

Things have been stressful for me the past few weeks, so I did what I always do when I'm stressed - I took a walk around the city. Melbourne and its hidden beverage junctions be it juices or coffee are wonderful. This one I went to yesterday is a new kid in town: Five Plus. It is a smoothie junction and I tried "The Good Life" on the menu. I really enjoyed it. It tasted....healthy but the yummy kind of healthy. I went again today, tried a different one on the menu called "Smooth Skin". It tasted even healthier (it had spinach blended in so..), but still yummy and refreshing. This time around I took more pictures, because look at the store, too cute to ignore!
PS: I promise myself that I would post more often on my coffee/food/beverages adventure in Melbourne, so let's hope I have enough free time to keep my promise!
Location: Five Plus, Little Lonsdale St, Melbourne, VIC
