[Da Biblioteca] Os Primeiros Passos do Futebol Feminino

Nettie Honeyball (seu nome verdadeiro era Mary Hutson) foi a responsável pela fundação do British Ladies Football Club Northern Team (BLFCNT), em 1894. Feminista, ela trabalhou incansavelmente pelo direito das mulheres ao voto.

O BLFCNT foi o primeiro clube de futebol feminino da história. Sua primeira presidenta foi a também feminista, Lady Florence Dixie. 

A primeira partida de futebol oficial entre mulheres, foi disputada em 23 de março de 1895, entre representantes do Norte e do Sul de Londres.

A imprensa, em geral, não era prestativa, e fazia comentários depreciativos sobre as habilidades mostradas pelas mulheres. Apenas o jornal Sportsman não viu diferença nos níveis de habilidade entre homens e mulheres. Apenas destacava que os homens chutavam a bola com mais força.

Inicialmente, as partidas tornaram-se grandes eventos de arrecadação de fundos para instituições particulares. E, apesar do preconceito e da desconfiança manifestada em diversas publicações, as equipes se movimentaram pelo país em seus jogos. No St James Park, em Newcastle, 8.000 pessoas compareceram para ver um jogo, porém, a partir de então cada vez menos pessoas compareciam aos jogos. Até a Primeira Guerra Mundial, o futebol feminino seguia perdendo força.

Quando as mulheres assumiram o trabalho nas fábricas durante a Primeira Guerra Mundial, elas foram incentivadas a montar equipes de futebol de fábrica para si. Essas equipes cresceram em número e habilidade e continuaram por alguns anos após a guerra, para o horror da Associação de Futebol (FA), que, em 1921, incomodada com sua popularidade crescente, o proibiu.

The Football Association hopes video evidence will prove to FIFA that Dele Alli’s obscene gesture was aimed at England team-mate Kyle Walker rather than any official or opponent. Moving to within touching distance of the World Cup finals last week was overshadowed by the fallout to the Tottenham attacking midfielder’s middle-finger gesture in the 2-1 qualifying win against Slovakia. Annoyed not to win a free-kick after a collision with Martin Skrtel on the edge of the box, when play was halted TV footage showed Alli swearing – something he was quick to point out on social media was aimed at Walker. England boss Gareth Southgate downplayed talk his gesture was aimed at referee Clement Turpin, with both Alli and Walker understood to have made statements as part of the FA’s submission to FIFA. Football’s world governing body opened disciplinary proceedings against the England midfielder in the wake of the incident, with the FA given up until Wednesday to respond. The above tweet from Sadiq Khan was promoting Visit My Mosque day, an annual campaign to open our doors and welcome our neighbours which we felt was rather poignant given the current climate. We also have one piece of fantastic news to share with you. LFJ has been awarded funding from the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation. We are very proud to have been successful in our application which will support our programme and Ambassador offer over the next three years.

                            Things We Are Looking Forward To                                                  -------- Bringing together old and new Ambassadors at the offices of the Football Association looking at feeding youth-led ideas into the LFJ programme and exploring exciting options for Ambassadors to build on their skills.                                                    ---- Wrapping up and celebrating the completion of the programme at Hatch End High School and Deptford Green School.                                                    ---- Getting a new programme underway in the boroughs of Barnet and Brent.                                                    ---- New partnerships that look to strengthen our ties with the FA, build in support for our future participants, and to further raise the profile of London Football Journeys.

We spent two days at Highbury Grove School. Firstly we talked through the achievements of all participants and presented their Open College Network qualification. The other was to talk about the upcoming Ambassador opportunities, which we also did with Hatch End High School. We will kick off the Ambassador programme on Monday 13th February at the offices of the FA in Wembley Stadium.  

Last week we spent some time with students at Ark Academy (above) who helped us review a new LFJ resource and brought fresh perspective.  

Then there was Kensington Aldridge Academy, near Latimer Road, who delivered a superbly well-rehearsed presentation on their London Football Journey. Check out our Instagram account for more photos.
