this sounds like you care about a concept and that the physical material its implemented in doesnt matter, that sounds like its separating the conceptual from the physical to me. like, "i dont care about wether the song is stored in a cd or a pendrive or a vynil, all i care is about the information that is the song, which is an abstract idea, separate from the material since i just said that the material format is irrelevant"

(Replying to this) Sure, I care about the concept as separate from its specific physical instantiation. But that doesn't require seeing the concept as being a substance or anything. It just means that there's goals I care about that can be satisfied by anything playing the song. Same as when I want to kill a mouse, I don't specifically care about getting a spring mousetrap vs getting a glue-trap vs getting a cat—I just care about getting something that kills mice. But that doesn't mean I believe there's some special unseen metaphysical tag that says "mouse-killer" on all of those, and that I'm really seeking that tag.

I guess to simplify, I don't see "I care about X" to be incorrect if X isn't referring to a specific physical object. I can believe that physical objects are the only thing that exist, and deny that categories /information/functions exist in any thick sense, without then saying that caring about categories/information/functions is nonsensical. Because categories/information/functions are relevant to my goals even if they don't carve nature at the joints.

Tying it back to the tragedy of death stuff, caring more about psychological continuity than bodily death seems reasonable insofar as I don't see my "self" as a substance, but do value my future insofar as having one lets me to continue seeking my goals*. This could still be realized if my psychological continuity got instantiated in a different physical form, but couldn't be realized if my body was given a different psychological continuity. If my body goes into a coma, and later wakes up with no memories and a completely different personality, then it seems like a tragedy has happened to "me" without happening to my body or to the post-coma person.

Of course, you might disagree. JJ Thomson famously had the opposite intuition. Or if you have my intuition, you might think that while there's a tragedy here, its that the pre-coma self wont ever get to realize her desires, or that her loved ones will mourn the "old" her, there wouldn't be a tragedy in that she died. But honestly I see those things as just being what the tragedy of death is.

So the 1TB HDD is disconnected for now. As I said I have the backups, and it appears in the dispositive list and to be partitioned but it's RAW format. My desktop is overall old and gives up if I attempt the chkdsk to see if it fixes the RAW, so I disconnected it and later will take it out and attempt to access it as an external HDD. It'll probably end up as a secondary backup. It happened the same with one of my father's old HDD this year.

On another note... The HDD with the Operational System gave me scares too 🤡 It gave me blue screens of death... After I disconnected the other HDD????

Since I literally only CLEANED dust from inside the desktop when I went to disconnect the cables for the 1TB HDD BUT AT THE SAME TIME WINDOWS WENT AND INSTALLED TWO OR THREE UPDATES AMIDST THE RESETS TRYING TO ACCESS THE OTHER HDD, I think some of them is wreaking havoc.

Since I just researched that at the start of October there was such a case with Windows 11 (mine is 10), it seems likely, so I'll uninstall them; it's the only thing I didn't do yet, because I checked the RAMs, did a chkdsk and scannow on the OS HD and it came clean. Or it's hardware damage and I'll have to reinstall the OS in a new Drive before it dies definitively 🤡

I won't promise proper Devlogs or anything this month 😥 It appears I'll have to spent a lot more time discovering wtf is wrong with my desktop than I had expected, and as consequence not writing because... Well, while I have a notebook, it's from 2012, minimal RAM and Windows 7 32bits, with a screen that's barely the size of my hand and that heats up like crazy. It's a work in patience writing in it that I only engage when I'm outside home for long periods of time.

That's it. The desktop is resetting after the last screen of death (when I was testing it by playing a bit with DAI, literally character creation), and doing chkdsk on... Well my PenDrive. Which doesn't make sense 🤡 BUT the update messing things for Windows 11 apparently also cause it, so... Another vote for "uninstall latest updates".

Let's see what happens once it finishes.

The funny thing is that the weeks before we had a massive heat wave around here and my Desktop faced it With No Problems, a massive change from last year (new processor and motherboard, but like, bougt second hand) Rains arrive and the weather improves and it decides to give me trouble like a victorian lady. 🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡

Just to warn that the Devlog will probably come out tomorrow or Sunday.

It was going to come out today, after I got up to some more writing in it, but my 1TB HDD is acting up and I'm doing a bunch of checkups and backups on it, so no writing and such. It's the one with the most recent files for Walking on My Grave

Thoughts with me so I'll manage to fix it up. I have WOMG backups, including recent ones and of everything else, but still there are some recent files I would lose if the HDD gives up. I don't think it will, I can access it fine, but it's slow and some folders and archives are lagging and there were some errors when I tried to exclude some things I don't need anymore. Probably I'll just end up having to backup the most recent files and formatting it, but it still put a stop on my plans.
