here's that silly self-indulgent Chopper and Funny bone ficlet i mentioned. can be interpreted as either platonic or romantic. it's a big fluffy mess and rife with my personal headcanons so don't expect s-tier writing here. technically counts as a song fic i think? lyric credits to Safe and Sound by Taylor swift.

The tech wing of the dorms was being fumigated for rust mites, so the skylanders of the tech element were stuck temporarily bunking with other ‘landers. Chopper was staying in Funny bone’s room. Not that that was an issue, in fact the duo had welcomed the impromptu sleepover. but late into the night, trouble arose...

Both were sleeping soundly, until Chopper was awoken by what sounded like whimpering. Distinctly canine, quiet yet still easily noticeable. A bleary-eyed glance to his right revealed the source. Funny bone, still asleep, limbs twitching and quiet whimpering slipping from his jaws, and muttering words the dino couldn’t quite understand. It was clear the skeleton was having a nightmare. Chopper understood the feeling, memories arising of his own recurring nightmares, which had oddly enough not reared their ugly heads tonight. Chopper reached a gentle hand to his skeletal companion’s shoulder. The still sleeping canine shuttered at the touch, tail flicking about unpleasantly. Chopper managed to catch a few words slipping from the undead’s maw. “-not like this-”  “-i’ll do whatever you want-” and then back to whimpering, occasionally broken up with quiet yelps and gasping. Chopper gently shook his friend’s shoulder, trying to bring him back from the nightmare without spooking him too bad. “Funny bone wake up. It’s just a nightmare, you’re ok…” Chopper gently spoke. The whimpering and quiet words stopped, but the twitching continued for a few moments before the skeletal canine abruptly jolted awake with a terrified bark. He frantically looked around the room for a moment, before his glowing green eyelights, fuzzy and unfocused from terror, landed on chopper. His lights slowly refocused as he stared at the dino for a few moments, before practically diving into his arms, head buried in his chest with loud sobs that stained his scales with rivers of tears. Chopper quietly embraced the canine, rubbing small circles along the back of his skull. “Shhh, it’s ok, it’s ok, you’re safe. I’m right here. Nobody’s hurt, everybody is safe and sound.” Chopper gently reassured, breath hitching as he tried, and failed to hold back his own tears. The two sat there in each other’s arms a while, the reptile gently rubbing up and down the skeletal canine’s spine with one hand,careful attention given to each little bump and spike, and the other continuing to trace circles along the back of his skull, until Chopper made an offer. “You wanna hear a lullaby my mom use to sing me?” Funny bone looked up, sockets still full of tears, and gave a gentle nod, before placing his head back into Chopper’s chest. The dino began to sing, gentle and full of love. He remembered every word and careful note of the old song like the back of his hand. 

                 “Just close your eyes, the sun is going down. you’ll be alright, No one can hurt  you now. Come morning light, you and i’ll be safe and sound…” 

He repeated the gentle verse a few times, a gentle mantra, each word more comforting then the last, Funny bone slowly dozing off in his arms, tears coming slowly to a stop. Even after Funny bone had long since fallen into peaceful sleep, Chopper continued to hum the old tune as he laid the skeleton down in the bed, before cuddling up beside him, Funny bone drowsily leaning into the touch. The pair slept peacefully through the rest of the night, nestled under many layers of blankets and carefully arranged multitudes of pillows, both individuals pleasantly nightmare free all night…
