I don't think I've shared a picture of my One Piece wall here yet, so here it is!
Found some frames at the thrift store for my favorite advent calendar paintings so they wouldn't just be laying around taking up space, with a bonus Sanji, and now a Luffy from con. I also have a Jimbei I should get up there eventually!!!

Why Nirvana in Fire Wins at Revenge Story with Identity Porn
Nirvana in Fire was my first ever cdrama that was a revenge story with identity porn. Since then, I've seen many other dramas along similar lines. A League of Nobleman. Blood of Youth. City of Streamer. Fighting for Love. Legend of Anle. Long Ballad. Princess Weiyoung. Rise of Phoenixes. Sword Dynasty. Weaving a Tale of Love. Word of Honor. Some of them are quite good but none of them really hit the same way. So, apart from the fact that it was the first one I ever watched, I thought I'd made a brief list of reasons why I think Nirvana in Fire is the best.
Lin Shu's Identity
Tumblr media
I just appreciate that when shit went down and Lin Shu's whole family and army and many of his friends were killed and he became a man on the run, he was a full-grown man (okay, still pretty young, but definitely not a child) with his own life and even an army position.
A lot of these identity porn dramas will have their MCs meeting ppl for the first time in many years, in disguise, but they only knew these ppl when they were children. Childhood friends are great and all that, but can they hit as hard as the complicated, fleshed out relationships that Lin Shu had and lost? He had a friendship of many years with Jingyan. He had an engagement and a longstanding friendship with Nihuang. He has friends from the army, younger cousins playing the role of "we don't even understand what happened back then and maybe that's better", older friends and relations who he actually knew as an adult.
Simultaneously, his past identity increases the threat of discovery for Lin Shu. He's a known factor to many, many people in the capital. Yes, they think he's dead. But small things like a hazelnut allergy or his mannerisms or his previous friendships with people are still memorable enough that even with a completely different face, if he's not careful, he might give himself away. He's not infiltrating a group of strangers or people who only knew him as a kid. He's infiltrating a group of people who were close to him for many, many years of his life.
HOWEVER. Lin Shu's identity is not so important that everyone in the capital is still obsessed with him twelve years later (with some exceptions). This isn't Mysterious Lotus Casebook where we're all still pining for Li Xiangyi, because...
2. The Chiyan Case Wasn't Even About Lin Shu?? (Also, No One Cares About That Ancient History Anymore (Jingyan, Sit Down))
The Chiyan case wasn't about the Lin family at all, really.
No one specifically wanted Lin Shu dead or had a big grudge against his dad or anything. It's all about power, military and political. For some conspirators, it was just about getting a leg up in court. But mostly, it was about Prince Qi, the previous crown prince. The Lin family just happened to be friends with him and ended up in an uncomfortable (highly murderable and frameable) position.
Lin Shu may mourn his family, but for the majority of the show, he doesn't talk about it. He doesn't talk about his mother and his family back at the capital either committing suicide or being killed indiscriminately. He only mentions his father's name a handful of times in the whole show. Lin Shu's drive is that his father's ARMY was killed, tens of thousands of men. That's the weight on Lin Shu's shoulders: the death of all these innocent men because they were in the way. The Chiyan Case; the Chiyan Massacre. The denouement of Lin Shu's victory (not to give too many spoilers) is not just his father's name being cleared of a treason charge. It's when there's finally a memorial put up for the Chiyan Army, with memorial tablets that he can publicly visit to pay respects.
Why does this make it a better revenge story with identity porn? A couple reasons. First, Lin Shu is very much the center of the story and has very personal beef, but he treats himself like a tool and his objective isn't about himself or familial connections (they're part of it but they're not everything). He doesn't even know all the people he's avenging. That's fine; he'll still carry that weight. I just think it's neat.
Second, the fact that the Lin family (and the whole Chiyan Army) were really just collateral damage for getting rid of Prince Qi really emphasizes just how careless the current regime is of the value of human life.
Third, as Meng Zhi says when Lin Shu comes to the capital, everyone at court is busy with their own little power struggles and no one has time to care about Lin Shu or protect him. Lin Shu's like yeah that's fine :) I'm not anyone's focus anymore and the Lin family has been swept under the rug like we never existed :) and no one even talks about the Chiyan case anymore for fear of being accuse of treason :) that's all okay because I'm about TO MAKE THIS EVERYONE'S PROBLEM ANYWAY and honestly the fact that everyone's trying their hardest to forget will just make them more oblivious when I come to fuck them up.
3. All Of This is Whose Fault, Again?
Tumblr media
That's right, folks, we're in a show that knows that when shit goes down at court and your family gets framed for treason and the emperor orders them executed, sure, you can blame the conspirators who framed them all you want, but also, YOU KIND OF DO HAVE TO BLAME THE EMPEROR.
People have said enough about how great this is on a thematic level of accountability but seriously I've seen so many shows dodge this. ~It's not the emperor's fault bc he was misled by these conspirators~ or ~the emperor is only a puppet emperor, if he actually had power instead of this evil person, he would put everything right.~ Or, if they dare to blame the emperor, maybe he's just an evil emperor and was bad all along. NIF says yeah, he was lied to on many levels. There was a whole complicated conspiracy going on and many people to blame. But he could have taken things slower. He could have required better evidence. He could have trusted people who had supported him for many years, at least enough to listen to their side of the story BEFORE KILLING THEM. And why didn't he? It's not because he's an idiot. It's because he's an emperor, and emperors don't like seeing other people gain enough power to even potentially become a threat. It's because he wasn't looking for the truth, he was looking for an excuse to kill. And he's not unusually evil for that; this kind of callousness towards murder and grasping for power at all costs is more the norm at court than any kind of honor or morality.
The Emperor's a nice guy sometimes! He used to fly kites with Lin Shu when he was young! His sons give him a headache, but honestly, relatable, they'd give you a headache too! He likes Consort Jing and honestly, who wouldn't! And he killed one of his sons, one of his closest friends, and an entire army, and he would do it again without hesitation. He's not especially evil. Being an emperor is bad enough.
4. Other Bad Guys
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's worth mentioning that Lin Shu's opponents are not stupid.
Xie Yu and Xia Jiang, Prince Yu and the Crown Prince, even the Empress and Noble Consort Yue: They aren't all geniuses, but they aren't idiots flailing around in spite. They're pretty smart, and if Lin Shu wants to take them down, he has to be smarter.
It's also worth mentioning that this is not one of those shows where the protagonist happens to take down his opponents mostly by standing still and just defending himself when they lash out at him. This seems like an obvious thing in a revenge drama, but the number of times I've seen the opposite, the protagonist swearing revenge and then just struggling with self preservation.... but no. Lin Shu has A Plan. He is going to be proactive and actually take his enemies down. Admittedly he will do this by revealing their past misdeeds but this isn't a case of "the misdeeds will just happen to pop up". This is a case of "I will actively unearth skeletons from where you threw them in a well in an abandoned manor".
TO SUM UP
Without going into the things that make Nirvana in Fire a great show in general (great acting, good pacing and plotting, good costuming, and so on and so forth) I think the main things that make it hit for me as a revenge story with identity porn are 1) letting the MC's past identity be that of a grown man who actually had a life (more connections to the past, but also more to lose and more danger in the present as a result), 2) the fact that the offense that the MC is avenging wasn't even like a personal thing to the offenders (bc! it's fucking infuriating!), 3) the fact that the drama is willing to face the root of the problem (the problem is both corruption at court and the fact that the highest arbiter is flawed, not just individual conspirators), 4) the supply of multiple good antagonists, and 5) LETTING THE MC ACTUALLY, ACTIVELY PURSUE REVENGE AND THAT'S THE MAIN PLOT AND WE AREN'T SPENDING MOST OF OUR SCREENTIME ON SIDEPLOTS AND ROMANCE OR MERE SELF PRESERVATION. These may not seem like large things but my friends, you would be surprised how many revenge dramas I've watched at this point that can't do them.
ok I'm done ranting. Feel like most of this is actually stating the obvious but I'm just in a mood and had to get it out. (...also possibly I've been let down by some revenge dramas lately but I won't get into it. it's okay. we can't all be Nirvana in Fire; only Nirvana in Fire can be Nirvana in Fire.)

[Spoilers for Hellblazer: Dead in America #4]
Tumblr media
Absolutely loving Spurrier's writing of John Constantine's humour and attitude in "Hellblazer: Dead in America" (2024)
Tumblr media
Swamp thing is having none of John's nonsense right now.
Tumblr media
And Nat continues to be absolutely 100% awesome. Love her.
Spurrier and Co. not doing too bad with her accent, either. People tend to overdo the Glasgow accent in writing. Although, "bint" is not so common here tbh. "You'se" is on point, though. Make myself cringe with that all the time.
Tumblr media
Look at them. Pair of absolute twats.
Tumblr media
Every panel of Aaron Campbell's is a bloody frameable work of art.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'm so excited to see where Noah's story is going and I'm so nervous for him. I bet he already suspects what John's not telling him. Poor guy.

your art really inspires me!!! in a few ways. i'm really in love with your use of shapes and lines, its so nice in a really particular way that resonates with how i want my art to be, and its ALSO really inspiring to see you just. post your own ocs and draw them over and over as much as you want, its so cool. at times ive felt a bit weird about how my main creative drive is often just about my little guys that nobody actually knows- but thats the same thing as anyone whose ever written an amazing story, isnt it? freedom and peace and light on planet earth 😌☀️⭐️
That's such a lovely thing to say, thank you!
But if I'm being honest, and I've mentioned this before, I've also felt weird, embarrassed and guilty about being obsessed with my characters and wanting to draw them over and over again. Somewhere along the line I got really nervous and cautious about sharing any oc content, I didn't want to talk about their lore/stories/backgrounds publicly and I tried to draw them only as a treat between other works. I guess I just thought people were finding them tiring and unrelatable (despite there being no evidence to support that) and that I was being selfish for drawing my own characters so much. I also believed that if I wanted to be a proper artist and develope my skills, I should be making art that looked "frameable", stuff that I could potentially present to people irl. I'm very proud of those pieces but making them didn't feel as creatively and emotionally fulfilling as making character art always is.
Around last May however, after a bad six month art block or so, I just thought I'd be properly self-indulgent for once and draw Machete as much as I liked. Vasco joined him about a month later. And I've been having such good time doodling them, I've been more inspired and productive during this summer and fall than in past five or six years combined. I'm delighted to see how liked they are, and the support and interest they receive continue to fuel my fixation ;_; <3

Eden’s Garden Predictions: Where we go from here (Spoilers ahead)
So we’ve lost Wolfgang, the morally flawed Lawyer, and Eva the depressed “Mathlete” (I’m still unsure if Eva really is who she says she is but that’s a story for a different time). 14 remain and Damon is still literally the worst person ever. (Jimmy🤝Damon). With that in mind, while Chapter 2 awaits us in the next two years or so… What will happen to the cast in the future? I have some theories, so let’s go over them.
Damon Matsu: An absolute Enigma of a man. While there is the one part of me that wants Damon to die next chapter, I’m also feeling the very distinct possibility that Damon is gonna be a late game death. That is, of course, if he’s really as stubborn about developing his character as he says he is. Then again, if the game goes for a more tragic ending then Damon most likely isn’t dying any time soon.
Desmond Hall: Victim. I cannot for the life of me imagine this man committing murder at this point in time and simultaneously cannot see him surviving. Someone's gonna take advantage of his kindness and kill him. Calling it now.
Eloise Taulner: I want to say Killer? It does seem like a strong possibility, especially with her Freetime Events for her to be a Murderer but just... I dunno, she doesn't really give the Vibe? Then again this does go against the grain of what is considered "Usual Danganronpa" so WHO KNOWS?! Killer for now, may change to Survivor later.
Toshiko Kayura: Victim, Middle or Late Stage. I see no way in this world where a child, much less someone like Toshiko, makes it to the end game. She could also potentially be a Killer but I definitely see Victim as more likely.
Wenona: Another Enigma... I literally can't answer because her story is so blase atm that I don't really see where she fits into all this. Which is a shame because her personality and voice actor are TOP TIER! But yeah I got nothing for Wenona
Ulysses Wilheim: ...Survivor? Like maybe Killer but I just don't really see him dying at any point? I'll probably look stupid when he dies like Chapter 2 or something but I just can't see him dead? Frameable or Murderable yes, but I dunno. He just doesn't give me dead guys vibes.
Mark Berskii: I swear on my grandfather's grave, Mark Berskii is our second killer. I am GODDAMN CALLING IT! I don't care if it's "Traditional" or "Danganronpa-esque". Mark Berskii is gonna snap and kill someone through some elaborate and you all can suffer for it.
Diana Venicia: Maybe dead but I'm betting survivor or atleast late stage death. She's giving Damon rival vibes and Rivals are not the type to die easily or sometimes even at all. Diana is making it to the end, I'm begging and pleading.
Kai Monteago: Late game Death. Maybe Chapter 3 but definitely not Chapter 2. He doesn't really feel like an assistant/support but he does give the vibe of someone that is going to slowly warm up to Damon/Damon is going to slowly warm up to him sorta thing.
Jett Dawson: This is probably my denial talking but I think Jett's gonna survive. Maybe he'll be a victim or killer in some confusing Identity Based Murder Scheme but personally? I'm opting Survivor. My boy's making it to the end BABY!
Ingrid Grimwall: ...Third Enigma. Not for the same reasons as the other two though... More so I could see her anywhere. A Victim, a Killer, and a Survivor are all equally high possibilities to me. I think she needs more screentime to truly develop her character.
Grace Madison: Killer? Like her anger aside she definitely feels like the type to murder. Either for Sympathetic or Selfish Reasons. She's just a character that feels very stabby happy, ya know?
Jean DeLamer: ...Victim. I love him dearly but not only does that man not have the heart to kill someone (Aside from Pirates), he would more than likely offer himself up if one of his friends was like dead-set on Murdering someone. He ain't making it.
Cassidy Amber: You remember how I swore that Mark Berskii was gonna be the Chapter 2 Killer? Cassidy who I think he's gonna kill. A lot of people speculate that Cassidy is late game or the Mastermind or something like that due to her "Spider" imagery. But I mean... I just don't see it. Cassidy is very "Friendly Helpful Bug Killing Spider" not "Secret Manipulative Mastermind" Spider to me. And that sort of personality is gonna get her neck snapped. Sorry
Mara: She's dying. I don't know how, or Why, or when, or who kills her. But she is very much marked for death at this point. I guara-fucking-tee it.
Tozu: I mean... He's clearly atleast ONE of the Masterminds so like... Unless we do tragic ending motherfucker is going to DIE. That's just a given.

Script-A-Day #25: Reptiles! by Aero
It's the Philo-Saint in a Heretic game (or maybe the Stormcaught Drunk) versus the Al-Hadikhia!
Tumblr media
Featured characters: Heretic, Psychopath, Al-Hadikhia
Fabled characters: Storm Catcher (favoring the Drunk)
Jinxes:
Baron/Heretic: The Baron might only add 1 Outsider, not 2.
This is an alteration to the Baron’s ability regardless of whether or not the Heretic is actually in play, so the Baron can’t ever be sure if the Heretic is in play.
Spy/Heretic: Only 1 jinxed character can be in play.
Complexity: Expert. Recommended for players with stellar poker faces who can lie to the evil team for the whole game about the existence of a Heretic.
Database link (find the PDF and JSON for running it there!)
Writeup under the cut!
Reptiles is a Heretic script.
I was half-considering just ending the first part of the writeup there and immediately jumping down to the interactions, but there's more background I can give. Reptiles is a script using the Storm Catcher in a unique way - to let evil players know who to frame. Unlike most stormcaught characters, the stormcaught Drunk has no idea they're the Drunk, and if evil players know who they are, they can use their abilities to make them seem like the Demon. The Al-Had in particular is in prime position to do this: they can choose the Drunk at night, watch them live despite them choosing to die, and then accuse them of lying about their choice.
The Heretic throws a wrench into everything, as it typically does. If the win conditions are reversed, that makes an Al-Had choice's decision all the more interesting, since they might want to die early to accelerate their own team's loss. The good team has a number of ways of discovering a Heretic: the Librarian can ping off them, the General's information can be wonky over multiple nights, and the Undertaker can dig them up, among other social reasons. Characters like the Innkeeper and Philosopher can really help steer the good team to a loss-turned-victory, too: ever seen a Philo-Saint win the game before?
With these in mind, it's no wonder that bagbuilding is tricky here. In a Heretic game, give good and evil some counterplay to it: I mentioned some good characters above, but a Psychopath has a very interesting decision to make on when to off their Demon or themselves. Make the Stormcaught Drunk someone frameable and a character whose info will help evil, but also someone that evil doesn't have to worry about tying themselves too strongly to: after all, the Drunk's the scapegoat! Maybe give the evil team an Outsider bluff when there's a Drunk in play, to make their claim of Outsider a bit more suspect.
Some notes:
I'd consider a five-star General here (introducing "good/evil slightly winning" ratings in between the three specified on the token text). Regardless of which one you're running, though, remember to flip the info in a Heretic game: if good has all their inforoles dead and is suspecting the wrong players, they're close to losing classically and therefore winning via Heretic.
Know how to run the Philo-Heretic-Spy interaction. If the Philosopher tries to gain the Heretic ability in a Spy game, show the Philosopher the Spy token, the Djinn token, and shake your head: their ability is spent (mark then with the Philo-drunk reminder token).
Make sure you know how to run the Fool in an Al-Had game! If the Fool chooses die, expending their first life, then the Al-Had's choices all live after the choices, the Al-Had attacks the Fool again, using both their lives in a single night phase.
Oh, and while I'm at it, make sure you know how to run the Barber in an Al-Had game, too. If the Barber chooses to die, they die and proc immediately: even if not all the choices were announced, go to the Demon and ask them if they want to Barber-swap and resolve it as normal before announcing the rest of the picks. If the Demon chooses to swap players, the new instance of the Al-Had ability means you continue the night as normal, even if not all of the previous Al-Had's choices were announced.
A quick note about the Psychopath: regardless of whether or not it's in play, give town some time after reconvening from whispers to let a potential Psychopath use their ability before opening nominations. That way, town doesn't meta which Minions are in play based on how much time you give.
Refresh yourself on how to run the Al-Hadikhia. The Al-Had chooses 3 players each night. Then, put the Demon to sleep, silence town and announce the first player: they silently choose to live or die. If they choose to die, they do so immediately: similarly, if they choose to live and were dead, they revive. After all 3 announcements, if all 3 choices are alive (it doesn't matter if they chose to live, just if they're alive), the Al-Hadikhia kills all 3 players in the order they were picked (so an Al-Had in final 3 can pick the other two living players, then themselves and choose to live, guaranteeing their victory).
That's about it from me today! If your group is a fan of Heretic, I'd consider this script, but if not, Reptiles II: Lizard in the City plays similarly with a Klutz instead of the Heretic. Give either one a go; they're both great!
