Hello! Have you heard of the Australian dessert 'Frog in a Pond'? It is just a cup of jelly with a chocolate frog set into it. Mostly a staple of kids parties but sometimes you can get one from the children's menu at a pub. Have you read The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova? It's probably the only vampire book I've read recently

Oh, I’ve read it, and really enjoyed it. I haven’t read it in a few years, and have been considering a reread.

My latest craft/decor projects!! I liked the lamp stand and bought it and a plain shade (there weren't any lampshades I liked) in an op shop, and then decorated it with the fabric from my favourite old worn out pair of pyjama pants. A globe, and voila!!!! The drawer I was specifically looking for - I really wanted some kind of display for my itty bitty ornaments and I was thinking some kind of shadow box or something, but didn't find anything I liked until Thursday in this vintage/recycled place we went to in Airport West. It had the paper in the bottom segment lining the three other horizontal segments too, but I decided to put a different kind of paper I liked as the backing for each, and leave the bottom as is bc I kind of liked it too. Love me a colourful recycled aesthetic.

Even though I'm not usually a fan of darkedgy theories for cartoons;

I can't stop thinking about this one for SU;

Two out of four Diamonds have canonical hypnotic/emotion control powers. White can straight up brainwash people and Blue can cause unbearable despair. There's probably an argument that Yellow has the power to create fear, even aside from her being generally intimidating.

What if Pink' s power was to create love? Love like a drug, love like euphoria. She didn't do it manipulatively: in her time as a Diamond she's a child, and it's not as though the Diamonds would have taught her to use the power responsibly, if they were even aware it existed.

Look at the fanatical way our Pearl loved her, even though she was originally supposed to keep an eye on her. Look at the way Greg accepted being treated as lesser, all for a taste of her love. The way that thousands of years on, the Diamonds can't forget what it felt like to love her. Spinel standing still for 6k years just to please her.

We, as the audience can see that Rose was often selfish, and treated others as toys or pets, and yet every character, even savvy ones like Garnet or cold ones like the Diamonds, were obsessively loyal to her.

it also makes sense that a character who never had to work to EARN the love of another being would wind up as callous as Rose was. If they are going to love you anyway, why would you need to treat them with respect? HOW could you ever conceptualize others' love as being precious if this automatic love was all you've ever known?

anyway @frankenfossil this is some of my mental gymnastics to try and explain why RosePink is the absolute worst in a way that isn't total character assassination.

Anyone else have thoughts?

Last movie I watched: Coco! I went with a couple friends with the gf and we all cried!!!! It was really beautiful, too.

Top three shows: Oh man, I’ve been watching Gotham and it’s... good... > w> I also really like Rick and Morty. Shadowhunters has been pretty stellar so far, but I’ve fallen behind on it. These are just 3 currently-running shows, I have a lot of fave old ones, not to mention all my animes and kids’ cartoons.

Top three bands: Brand New, Placebo, Starset. (tentative. there’s a lot more I rly rly like.)

i make a comic about a girl who's friends with Death, and an important character who hasn't come in yet is Muslim, and before I can introduce her I need to a) find out specifics about the Islamic Angel of Death and b) make sure that my Death, who's an unknown being but more of a shapeshifting alien than properly divine, but tends to take the form and role of divine beings, doesn't like invalidate her faith (or anyone's)? i gotta plan the conclusions she comes to upon meeting him, anyway.

And yeah I'm really enjoying these stories! Some more than others but that's usually the way with these things, eh! What other Valente books have you read, do you have favourites to recommend? (also wow i'm embarrassed at how thoroughly I misspelled the name though!!!!!!!!!! first AND last name wrong, yikes)]

That sounds really cool, and I hope you're enjoying the research! I’ve read Deathless, The Orphan’s Tales, and various short stories and poems by Valente, so not nearly enough lol. I’ve found it difficult to get a hold of her works, but there’s nothing I’ve read by her that I haven’t enjoyed or that hasn't inspired or affected me in some way, though Deathless is my absolute favorite and I think I will be in love with it for my entire life. If you haven't already, please check out the free writing available on her website. I especially recommend The Bread We Eat in Dreams, The Girl Who Ruled Fairyland— For A Little While, and The Consultant.
