Differences Between the Film and Novel Versions of Frankenstein

There are a lot of differences between the novel and film versions of Frankenstein. They almost seem like two completely different stories. Victor isn’t even called Victor in the film! “Henry” also has a very different fate. Not only does he survive, but so does Elizabeth. “Henry” learns nothing throughout the film and will most likely continue his experiments in the future. Additionally, the creature also seems much more monstrous in the film. This mostly boils down to the fact that the creature is mute, and thus does not have the eloquence of the novel’s creature. Despite this, the creature still does show some depth. Like when he interacts the little girl or reaches for the moon. There are still some thoughts behind his eyes, he is just incapable of expressing them. This was probably done to simplify the story. While the people of 1931 weren’t stupid, it was a simpler time. The morally grey, intellectual creature from the novel would be difficult to bring to the big screen.

A Review of Frankenstein (1931 Film)

What can I say about this film. It came out in 1931 and it definitely shows its age. The plot was very different from the book, the closest thing was that the main character was Frankenstein but even then they changed his name from Victor to Henry. The guy who played the creature did a good job though. He brought some intelligence to the creature despite not having any lines. You have to respect what this film did for the horror genre but in the end it does not hold up that well.
