This week we went to FreeFM where we go to get a insight into what it is like recording audio and how to speak into mics, transitions into topics, Intros and Outros. Unfortunately we did not receive this recording but it was extremely enjoyable and helpful moving forward with our podcast.

Day Seventeen (61)

Te Awamutu to Hamilton, 34km, about two hours A shorter day's ride, and I was happy to avoid cycling in too much sun - though it seems like summer has really kicked in! My tanlines have become much more apparent lately. A very straightforward day on the bike, though I did end up going in a circle once I got to Hamilton. Found the campsite, which like Te Awamutu was filled with young club rowers, competing at Lake Karapiro. I had some lunch in town before heading to FreeFM community radio for a fun interview. In the afternoon I spoke with Mich, read, and felt a little bored… a strange feeling! There hasn't been too often on this Tour where I’ve had too much free time. I went to the Museum for the show, and 15 came along. Grabbed some groceries in the evening, and settled in to listen to the Australian Open men's final - with Fed the winner!

A look at some of the techniques involved in creating the FreeFM cinema commercial.

This cinema commercial was created back in 1999 for the Sydney radio station FreeFM that was competeing for the 96.9 transmitter frequency. Despite this commercial's efforts and it's massive internet based '15Mbs of fame' the competition was won by NovaFM.

Of course many people will be dissapointed that there was any computer based visual effects used in the creation of the commercial. To them, I apologise for destroying the myth.

Many people have asked if the penis is 'my penis' and I answer this question again with the same answer as always, "Only part of it is mine".

The physical rig used for 'puppeteering' was an elastic band and a length of fishing line. The original rig created involved chopsticks which I rejected as it was too thick and the paint clean up would be overly complex.

The commercial was originally conceived in a bath. And no, it wasn't me, it was Pete Buckley in the bath. By himself.

The entire knob was replaced using a 3D animated digital knob. This gave the best control for revisable 'lip sync'.

The 3D knob needed a sense of surface texture and so at first the renders had a bump map applied. I found that the renderer which I think (this was 12 years ago) was mental ray, placed specular highlights on each bump despite the underlying phong shader having no specular. Seems that the bump map would override that setup. Which meant that every little bump had a highlight and this, in this particular context, changed our commercial from art to porn. i.e the knob was either dry, or wet. This is a massive difference in terms of censorship ratings. So the humble yet very useful 'emboss' setting got probably one of it's most prominent uses in history. In this clip you can see renders of a pass of a white spotted knob that drove the emboss. Dry knob = art. That means not only airplay due to the intended R18+ rating here in Australia, but 12 years later, I can post this clip on vimeo.

Wieder einmal sind zwei Stunden wie im Fluge vergangen. Ich hoffe die heutige musikalische Zeitreise hat euch gefallen. Oft sitze ich stundenlang vor dem PC und versuche eine möglichst stimmige Musikauswahl zusammenzustellen, werfe dann doch wieder die Hälfte über den Haufen und fange an zu improvisieren. Heute war ich glücklicherweise rechtzeitig im Studio und konnte die Technik vor der Sendung überprüfen. Prompt war beim linken Plattenspieler ein Kanal ausgefallen und es war ein lautes Brummen zu hören. Wenige Minuten vor Beginn der Sendung kam ich schon mächtig ins Schwitzen und schaffte es gerade noch rechtzeitig, ein defektes Kabel zu ersetzen und einen Wackelkontakt zu beseitigen. Sowas kann bei einem kleinen, nichtkommerziellen Radiosender jederzeit passieren. Wir haben leider nicht die großen Budgets, wie sie beispielsweise die öffentlich rechtlichen Sendeanstalten haben. Trotzdem macht es genau deshalb aber auch jede Menge Spaß, da man seine Sendung nicht nur selber "fahren" muss, sondern auch ein wenig von der Technik verstehen sollte, um in solchen Situationen improvisieren zu können. Doch wir freien Radios sind auf eure Unterstützung angewiesen! Wir bekommen nur einen verschwindend kleinen Anteil des Rundfunkbeitrages. Um unsere laufenden Kosten decken zu können, sind wir auf Spenden und Mitgliedsbeiträge angewiesen.
