Friday Night Funkin’: BlinDee
Basically, what I’m doing here is taking the songs from FNF: D Sides and rewriting the lore and designs to match - sort of like Minus, but with how the songs sound instead of the HP icons. Effectively, I’m creating a whole new cast of characters equivalent to the current D-Sides cast, but based only on the OST.
Tumblr media
CHARACTER: Parasim Parasim is an AI created by Danny Disco to participate in duets. He processes the opponents’ singing into MIDI patterns, which he recreates and mutates on his artificial whims.
Tumblr media
Parasim doesn’t have any songs of his own, but as the player character he shows up in everyone else’s songs unless noted.
--
CHARACTER: Daniel “Danny Disco” Crisis Danny Disco is a guy whose attire makes it seem like he never recovered from the seventies, but once you take a look at the futuristic freaks he’s forged, you’ll quickly find that he’s already further than the rest of us. His styles may be eccentric, but that’s no incentive to believe he isn’t inventive.
Tumblr media
WEEK 1: Voice Calibration Parasim is in Danny Disco’s house and wired into his computer. Parasim’s neural structure is being displayed on the computer screen.
Bopeebo Dialogue: DD: Alright, all these neural nets should be set up properly. Voice copying is enabled, creativity is at an acceptable level, pitch is adjusted by an octave... Alright, let’s rock! PS: be-eEP! DD: Prepare to disc out in five, four…
--
CHARACTER: ??? (THE DIRECTIONS ONE) ANALYSIS OF NEW TUTORIAL IN PROGRESS possibly still all star funky planet? possibly lemini’s space spouse?
CHARACTER: ??? (THE BEEPING ONE) ANALYSIS OF NEW TUTORIAL IN PROGRESS possibly Danny Disco’s sticky assistant/partner? possibly another parasim set to a different parameter?
[images here]
TUTORIAL:
--
CHARACTER: Sirilux Sirilux is a strange spirit who loves to creep around, get spooky, and create all sorts of scary mischief. This is, of course, second to his love of all things outer space. He loves space so much that he refuses to obey the law of gravity unless he really needs to, and even then he opts for a more moon-like descension.
Tumblr media
WEEK 2: Starry Night Sinkin’ Danny Disco goes to meet up with Lemini at her favorite planetarium, and he brings Parasim to show her his progress. Before they meet Lemini, Sirilux appears in order to strike fear into the new experiment’s heart... and sing about cool space facts, too.
Spookeez Dialogue: SL: Hey Dan, what’s that TV thing following you around? DD: Oh, that’s my new musical robot, Parasim! He’ll try to repeat whatever you sing back to you. SL: Seems pretty spooky. Let’s try it! DD: He has enough battery, and I’ve got the time, so sure, why not?
CHARACTER: VINCENT VICTOR VALENTINO Vincent Victor Valentino, also known as V3, is a killer that’s been pestering Danny Disco for a while. He’s a cannibal, but after he was the willing subject of various dubious experiments, he’s started not to consider himself one on the grounds that he’s “ascended past your species”.
[IMAGE GOES HERE]
WEEK 2: Starry Night Sinkin’ (Plot Twist!) By the time Sirilux is done with all three of his spooky space songs, the planetarium’s ceiling dome switches to the image of Vincent Victor Valentino. He requests that Danny Disco join him in a song about his imminent demise, but Disco refuses, sending Parasim out to do it for him. V3 finds this to be an acceptable substitute for now...
--
CHARACTER: Lemini What’s better than a hot mom who’s also the emodiment of Electro Swing? Absolutely nothing! Lemini is the creator of Groobert and All-Star Funky Planet, as well as the mother of Sirilux.
Tumblr media
WEEK 4: Real Cartoon Pal This week takes place inside Lemini’s laboratory, wherein flashing lights are abound and strange inventions from “dog magnet” to “full-color hologram of dog magnet” scatter the table.
--
CHARACTER: Groobert the Rapping Robot Lemini was inspired by Parasim to create her own musical machine named Groobert. She took a bit of a different approach, though - he has an on-board speech synthesizer with a classically robotic sound to it, and he generates his own lyrics in real time using LSTM technology. One problem, though - he isn’t exactly finished. His endoskeleton isn’t quite calibrated, the other half of his shell is still printing, and his vocals have a tendency to skip around like a dirty disk.
Tumblr media
WEEK 3: Half-N-Half Danny Disco took Parasim to an old abandoned factory for his next test run (apparently it has great acoustics). As it turns out, Lemini also took her creation to be tested in the same factory. They ended up deciding that they should probably set the bots up against each other, just to see how chaotic it gets - and boy, does it get chaotic.
In this week, there’s a unique bolt-dodging mechanic where Groobert will start exploding, sending bolts to hit you, and his joints will click against each other to signal an upcoming explosion. Because of all of the parts that are rapidly being ejected from him, he’s in worse condition after each song and has to be brought back to the workshop after he gets blammed in the end.
Pico Copycode Dialogue: LM: Oh hey, I didn’t expect to see you here! DD: I guess strange minds think alike when it comes to which abandoned factories to test their stuff in. DD: Speaking of stuff, I can see you’ve made a lot of progress on Groobert since I heard him last. LM: I’m pretty proud of it, yeah. There are a few quirks I haven’t been able to iron out, but I’m sure he’ll be able to survive this one test. LM: Groobert, roll out! DD: Parasim, believe! GB: Hey, copycode! Let’s rock! PS: beep skoop bom bept
--
WEEK 5: Head Hacked Danny Disco and Lemini were going to the mall(?) together when, for some reason, Parasim started acting odd. He was lashing out at random people walking by, trying to kick their dogs, and even becoming hostile to his own creator. Danny Disco tries to take him down nonviolently by activating some sort of failsafe, but eventually Lemini convinces him that they’ll have to cut some wires to get Parasim back in working order. Parasim still doesn’t make that easy, though, as once they approach, he runs away at high speeds.
WEEK 5: Head Hacked (PLOT TWIST) As it turns out, Parasim wasn’t just running away - he was running towards the skilled hacker who had been behind his change of attitude all long. That skilled hacker’s name? Vincent Victor Valentino.
CHARACTER: Binglo its just a scringlo binglo. a boinky spunge. a plondgey spongy.
--
weeks 6 and 7 go here because their opponents show up in hurray array but i have insufficient data about them so i’m not going to elaborate until d sides itself does
--
WEEK 0: Hurray, Array! It’s Open Mic Night at Club Zer0, and for some reason they let Parasim on the mic. This week is one big congrats to Parasim and the player after everything they went through together. All the previous main-story opponents are there to chime in.
All the beatboxing sounds are Danny Disco, just like they were in Week 1.
Test Dialogue: ??: Hey Dan, it’s Open Mic Night next Friday. DD: Hm. Maybe I could use that to test Parasim’s capabilities. DD: He can’t do full improvization with how he’s coded, and I can’t rework his code that drastically by next Friday, so I’d have to run two copies of his AI at the same time. ??: Wouldn’t the song quality suffer from having so much of a load on the CPU? DD: He has a hyperthreaded processor, so I’m pretty sure it’ll be alright. {4 days later} Club Zer0 Master of Ceremonies: Alright, Danny Disco, it’s your turn on the mic! DD: Excuse me, I have a... rather odd request. DD: Am I allowed to bring a singing robot on stage? CZMC: No. DD: I’ll give you this copy of Parappa The Rapper with a ghost in it if you let me do it. CZMC: ...fine.
Tumblr media
too slow: it’s me boy i’m the ps5 endless: parasim dove too deep into someone’s evil lair and met up with a security droid who thinks he’s trying to scar the cat. after declaring that isn’t going to happen, its mouth gets covered in some kind of sticky fiberglass webbing (explaining the muffled sound) and they get into a chase sequence. the owner is probably 90s themed. cycles: ??? milk: ???????
klaskii: a high-speed car chase where a fully completed Groobert is riding on top of the car and singing against the “huehuehue” guy (probably looks like majin sonic)
breakfast: a zephyrus-like menu where you talk to a noir detective
gettin freaky: ??? game over: same guy as gettin freaky

Funky Battle Months
(the story of Beck arriving in the world of Friday Night Funkin' Minus)
3 months have already passed and the Multiversal Sword is already charged "it seems that it is time to go to a new world" Beck said so he opened a new portal and quickly entered for his new adventure and arrived at the new world, the first thing he saw It is his body that now his fur had a lime green tone, he also had a black scarf and his headphones were gray that on the sides had a prohibited symbol but what called attention was a city that was at night but the streets were illuminated and there were people Beck had met before like Meat Boy and Henry Stickmin "wait that's what they are. ." beck was shocked to see them realizing that this world was interconnected with other worlds, "this reminds me of my world Multiland" beck was impressed by this great world so he went to explore the city called Newgrounds City, on the tour beck saw in a big screen to a canine girl named Hatsune Miku sponsoring a device called the Music Bracelet, which is a bracelet that allowed the user to sing, improving their characteristics through the melodies and working in the dances. Beck was interested but continued with his tour and was He went to a park and saw a blue boy with a cap doing a rap battle against a reptilian in dinosaur pajamas until the reptilian named Pico defeated the blue boy with a cap "that was a waste of time with you" said Pico mocking him but beck defended him "you're not too big to wear pajamas in public" beck returned the offense Pico was about to take out his pistols but his friend Dar Nell stopped him "let's go dino it's not worth it with them" Pico listened to him and they left "hey thanks for defending me. ." Said the blue boy whose name was Blue "if my name isn't very original" Blue said very embarrassed but Beck didn't think that name was bad suddenly some bullets almost hit him but Beck dodges them realizing it was Pico with his Two pistols "This is for the offense!" Pico said very angrily, Beck and Pico were fighting Beck realized that he was fighting agilely and in sync with the music since Blue's boombox was on giving Pico a beating until when he took off the hood of his pajamas caught sight of his hairstyle and beck looked at him as if he had seen it before "this isn't over yet" Pico said and left again very angry with Darnell, "Wow how did you do all this?!" Blue asked impressed by Beck's movements "I learned it from someone" Beck responded to Blue, after the conflict the two became friends "hey do you want to be my Rap Battles partner?" Beck accepted it, reinforcing the new friendship and being a duo for the battles Blue's rap song "is the Funky Rap time!" Beck said enthusiastically in his new adventure next to his new friend

Good morning!  I hope you slept well and feel rested?  Currently sitting at my desk, in my study, attired only in my blue towelling robe, enjoying my first cuppa of the day.  Welcome to the weekend!
Wow!  Here we are again: Friday!  Where did that week go?  No, seriously, where did that week go?
Last week, I described the deadly combination of “Christmas blues, jet lag and winter sickness.”  I don’t think I’m suffering from those ailments any more, but I am definitely under the weather.  Intuitively, you know when something’s not right.  I feel flu-ey but I don’t have the flu.  Occasional sneeze, pretty aggressive cough but I don’t have the “cold bones” I associate with flu.
Amazingly, even though I had no central heating on Wednesday night (and it was minus temperature), I put my pyjamas on (not very attractive), got under two duvets and had a really good night’s sleep.  I guess, all I can do is sleep and let my body repair itself.  You know I don’t like taking drugs!  Although, I did have two paracetamol.  Followed by  a large rum and coke.  Am I a junkie?
I’ve been told that the radiator coming off the wall has fractured a pipe beneath the floorboards.  So, the floorboards have to come up!  No, I’m not joking!  And I still have no central heating or hot water!  Yes, the floorboards in my front room have to come up!  Hopefully, a relative can sort this problem?
If not, it will be an interesting weekend of huddling around our electric heaters, trying to stay warm.  Weather-wise, I am watching the temperature in London very carefully.  Amazingly, according to The Met. Office, the cold snap ends on Friday and we move from minus four to three, rising to the almost-tropical high of 12 degrees on Sunday.  I think that may save us from freezing into a block of solid ice.
The Trouble arrives home on Tuesday.  She comes from a family of builders.  If I don’t have the heating fixed, she will not be impressed.
Have a fabulous and funky Friday!  I love you all.  You’re probably thinking, “You don’t even know me!” but, if people can hate for no reason, why can’t I love?

War… Hold up, do we really need a warning for this one? Dunno, but however, watch out for slightly disturbing and kinda…disgusting imagery, trypophobic patterns, as well as ‘necrotic’ (and dark themed) designs I made while having funky fever bc o h m y g o d do I get a little crazier every new quarantine day (and at this point it’s coming to be an usual thing for me, big sad). However, most are made no other than for the sole sake of satire, so y’know, no need to get your underwear in a twist
Tumblr media
Friday Night Funkin’ BoyFriend’s Hood – AU fanconcept sketches [XX]
EDIT 16/11/2023: Updated the drawing with a rescanned, more clean version
1.- Miss Luzbell
Daddy Dearest’s ex-wife in BF’sH, as well as Stephano and Bruce’s biological mother
If y’all couldn’t tell my burning passion for making strange, very detailed character designs, this shall b enough to convince you about it
She’s supposed to be a goth gospel singer by the way…and she’s a gargoyle
Her design, however, was real fun to make, especially her moon scythe (just noticed afterwards that I snuck a low-key Zardy reference, woo)
2.- Bruce
Stephano’s brother, and GF’s half-brother
And when I say ‘obscure’, I’m not saying he’s the edgiest of all characters (after his mom of course), but that he’s the least lore-wise appearing character; technically I just did his design out of spite lol
However, unlike his mild brother, he has no ill feelings against GF; heck, he himself knows their mother was the one that peaced out with no care and just left them at their luck with their dad…he still messes around with GF every so and then though.
3.- Shape!BoyFriend/Major B (BlueFriend) and Shape!Lil B/Minor B (Light BlueFriend)
Funny rhythm game mashup go bzzz
Beyond this point all I did was filler stuff…just for fun c:
Used the symbol on BF’s jacket for this one, both for the big and the small boi
Light BluF do be looking cute tho
4.- Shape!Stephano (Octephano)
Close to me but the Godfather walked in
Way to say Stephano’s design was indirectly/slightly inspired in my AU fandesign of Cube, don’tcha think-
5.- Shape!GirlFriend/High G (PinkFriend) and Shape!Miss G/Low G (Light PinkFriend)
Demon hoe and demon child
Before you ask, I went with my fancanon for this one (pink shapes can be with paradise shapes as long as they’re ‘purified’ with any light-source magic –aka triangles), hence why she’s wearing a triangle –BluF also has one by the way, basically it’s his mic
6.- Shape!Pico (HexaPico)
go pico ye ye
Idk what colour he’d be exactly, maybe a mix between orange and green (orange being the predominant color since y’know)
Also his hands can shapeshift into guns as long as he has the weapons’ config stored in his database (in this case, his right arm being the assault rifle, and the left one being his uzi)
7.- Nostalgic BoyFriend
Sad boi
Basically happening after the GF-got-stolen event
8.- Simplified Style! Stephano
This is a FNF ‘artstyle’ concept I though of not too long that’s basically like combining but bad with Minus and taking away all color paletes, having the lineart to be the only colorful part of the sprite (mostly being the color of the icon the character has)
Also, finally got to draw his revolver thing, even if it was low-key
9.- Heart thing…?
Was meant to be Stephano’s signature symbol or something, but I don’t know at this point
10.- Simplified Style! BoyFriend
Back at it again with the simplifications
And yeah in my interpretation, simplify!BF has a transparent cap, don’t ask
11.- Blood Moon
Random sketch
Looks like a fusion between Whore of Babylon and Spirit of the Night (TBOI) but that might be just me
12.- Shape!Arzeus (TriArzeus)
Inverted triangle bad
I can’t help but think that, in order to possess Broddy, he would have had to do it blixer style (headstab)

Headcanon List - Corpse + Cr1tIkal
I thought it would be fun to make this for both of them. I used the reader for this because y e s.

~~~~~
Corpse Husband
Sitting in his lap while he streams or works is a common occurrence between you two
Dragging Corpse to bed every night when he refuses to.
You two together as imposters are like if Russia and America decided to take over the world together with nuclear bombs
Corpse sneaking photos of you when you aren’t looking and not telling you about them
Unsuspected kisses and embraces. Most of the time its you giving him embraces and hugs which make him nearly have heart attacks. One time while you were in a zoom call for one of you college classes/work meetings, Corpse came in and kissed you on the cheek which got everybody's attention
Sneaking his hands into the camera during zoom calls. Especially when you’re talking
Always standing up for each other online and in Among Us
Cuddling all the time
Teaching Corpse how to cook and nearly burning the house down
Constantly teasing each other and bullying each other. Many nicknames. When someone called him “Deep Daddy” you corrected them by saying “No, its Deep Failure.” and that was what everyone called him for months.
Helping him with recordings and reading some stories for his channel every once in a while
You guys brag about each other all the time
Looking at memes together and watching videos and scary stories
Hanging out in the living room and talking for dates. You both hate going outside.
Everybody simping over the both of you together.
Looking at fanart of the two of you guys and reading CorpsexY/N fanfiction every once in a while
Never wanting to leave each others side. You guys are always in the honeymoon stage minus the sex.
Corpse sending funky monkey friday to you every single friday without fail
You send Corpse random pictures of cats and say “its u” and watch him smile from across the room
You like playing his music on repeat. He liked it at first, but now it’s just annoying. So everytime you play his songs, he does his damn best to turn it off.
Cr1tiKal
Talking about pokemon and yugioh card all. the. time. Your love for cards is what you and him bond over.
You always force Charlie to stay in bed when he wakes up in the morning. He usually tries to get away but you always prevail.
You always find random sex toys around the house- they’re everywhere. One day, your family came over to visit and they f o u n d Charlies stash and you had a lot of explaining to do.
Your parents/guardian hate Charlie and wanted you guys to break up. But you put some sense into them. You still bring him to dinner on thanksgiving and bring him alone to gatherings.
When Charlie makes an absolute mess of the house for videos, you yell at him until he cleans it up. You ain’t gonna be the one to clean up someone's mess.
You both try to cook in the kitchen but end up burning everything and doing it all wrong. The whole kitchen ends up being a fucking mess at the end.
The two of you go online and watch crappy YouTubers together for fun all the time.
You live off his kisses and hugs and if he forgets to give you the kisses and hugs you will go public with it. One day he forgot so you went on Twitter saying “@MoistCr1TiKaL is gonna be in one hell of a pickle if he doesn’t do what god wants.” And not even a minute after that Tweet was published he came in and gave you the kisses and hugs.
When he streams you are usually downstairs and you always miss him. You would often interrupt his streams just to say hi and give him hugs.
Date nights are either go out and watch a movie or stay home and watch a movie. You both enjoy them either way.
You two are very chaotic. When you get imposter together, its dangerous but also kinda shitty.
After long streams, Charlie surprises you by wanting nothing but cuddles and love.
You take videos of him in secret and post them online for him to find later.
He gets really jealous and clingy when someone hits on you. If some guy calls you pretty or handsome he will tell them to fuck off. It annoyed you a lot but you understood.
(for females) When you get your period, he likes to get you you favorite snacks and comfort you for the whole week.
You constantly bully each other and it worries some people. But its all fun.
You bully him for his height all the time and it generally pisses him off so much he will just walk away. He hates being short. He hates being called chicken legs.
You send him pictures of dogs and cursed images. Sometimes you send cursed images of two animals together and you say “this could be us”
You give him most of his video ideas and scoff when he lies about it.
Everybody shipping you two together.
Bill Frisell has long been one of the most innovative jazz guitarists, injecting influences from Americana/country (see Blues Dream), Malian guitar music (see his excellent The Intercontinentals), and even ambient/experimental music. To see him play in any capacity is a treat. This trio performances features bassist Thomas Morgan and drummer Rudy Royston.
6/8: The Black Dahlia Murder, House of Blues
Tonight, Michigan death metal band The Black Dahlia Murder plays last year’s Nightbringers in its entirety, their best album since Ritual and certainly one of their best records yet. We previously covered a show of theirs in Joliet to support 2015′s Abysmal, and if that was anything to go by, they’re experts at combining melody and power on stage as well as in the studio.
Knoxville deathcore band Whitechapel (playing This Is Exile in its entirety) co-headlines. Italian death metal band Fleshgod Apocalypse and blackened death metal bands Aversions Crown and Shadow of Intent open.
6/8: Young Widows, Subterranean
Tonight, Young Widows celebrates the 10-year anniversary of their album Old Wounds by playing it in its entirety as well as playing some never-before-played tracks from their just-released compilation DECAYED: Ten Years of Cities, Wounds, Lightness, and Pain. Earlier this week, we spoke with front-man Evan Patterson about the new album and the upcoming show.
Singer-songwriter Emma Ruth Rundle and local post-hardcore heroes Sweet Cobra open.
6/8: The World Is A Beautiful Place & I Am No Longer Afraid To Die, Lincoln Hall
There’s a reason that this band has made it to our top albums of both 2015 and 2017 and that their show three years ago at Subterranean was one of the best we’ve reviewed. The band’s trademark mix of post-rock, post-hardcore, and truly tender emo makes their sound unmistakable. Their stories, filled with tales of sexual violence, feminist revenge, and experiences with xenophobia have hit hard for many. Yet, their most successful songs remain as vaguely relatable as their music is expansive. Their live show is becoming increasingly ambient, as well, a refreshing shift for a band not content to stay within any one scene.
Baltimore Indie post-hardcore band Pianos Become The Teeth co-headline. LA garage rock trio Teenage Wrist opens.
6/8-6/10: Chicago Blues Festival, Millennium Park
Headlining performances take place in the Jay Pritzker Pavilion and include tributes to founder and owner of Delmark Records Bob Koester and legendary blues musician Little Walter, as well as a performance by a living legend, Mavis Staples.
We previewed Mavis Staples’ headlining show at the Vic Theatre back in February:
“Since 2010′s stunning You Are Not Alone, Chicago legend Mavis Staples has fostered a fruitful musical relationship with another beloved Chicagoan: Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy. Three out of the past four albums feature production and/or songwriting from Tweedy, and his minimalism is the perfect complement to Staples’ deep soul. Her most recent offering is If All I Was Was Black, an outward and explicit political statement. Live, Staples tends to cherry pick from her recent discography but also play Staples Singers classics and covers of The Band and Buffalo Springfield.”
Vieux Farka Toure plays the Budweiser Crossroads Stage (at South Chase Promenade) on Saturday at 2:45 P.M. The Malian singer and guitarist is more than just the son of the legendary Ali Farka Toure; he’s put out some great albums in his own right, namely his self-titled debut and 2011′s wide-ranging The Secret (I see you, Dave Matthews feature). His most recent album is last year’s Samba, which features the limber and joyous “Bonheur”.
Fantastic Negrito opens for Mavis Staples on Sunday at the Jay Pritzker Pavilion. His subversive, hilarious blues punk broke out in 2016 with The Last Days of Oakland, and he’s got a new album out next Friday with Please Don’t Be Dead. So far, he’s released two songs from it: the blistering “Plastic Hamburgers” and funky “The Duffler”.
6/8-6/10: Ribfest Chcago, Lincoln Avenue from Irving Park to Berteau
You can even be a vegetarian and enjoy Ribfest because it usually books pretty good bands. This year, headliners include Southern rockers The Weeks and country punks The Waco Brothers tonight, SILY favorite Algiers and indie folk act Yoke Lore tomorrow night, and 2000′s hype kings Ra Ra Riot and Americana duo Striking Matches on Sunday.
Algiers’ The Underside of Power was one of our top albums of last year. They’re a stellar live band, lead singer Franklin James Fisher equal parts soulful and angry, the band behind him delving into everything from ramshackle post-punk to ragtime and blues.
6/9: Tech N9ne: House of Blues
Divisive and lyrically dexterous Kansas City rapper Tech N9ne comes around pretty often, but like Los Lobos, that’s reason for me to always say “I’ll catch them next time.” Eventually, you just need to bite the bullet. Albums like All 6′s and 7′s and Something Else cemented him as an ambitious rapper who can succeed when working with big concepts and other mega rappers, while recent albums like Planet and Special Effects have showed he can be a hit-maker. He’s got 20 albums to his name and a ton of other EPs. Not everything he produces is quality, but he’s pretty prolific.
Hip hop artists Krizz Kaliko, Just Juice, Joey Cool, King ISO, and Mackenzie Nicole open.
6/9: Clams Casino, East Room
We covered influential beat-maker Clams Casino’s set at Day For Night 2016, where we noted that both he and the audience seemed a bit bored. Something tells me, however, that catching him in a crowded club at night is better than catching him in a half-empty post office in the middle of the day. (I listened to Instrumentals a couple days ago, and it still bangs.)
Producer Plu2o NASH opens.
6/9: Liz Phair, Empty Bottle
She’s got a sold out show at Empty Bottle and a major slot at this year’s Riot Fest. That’s because Matador records just released Girly-Sound to Guyville, a 25th anniversary retrospective of Liz Phair’s debut Exile in Guyville that even more notably includes remasters of her Girly Sound demo tapes. To celebrate the occasion, Phair’s set should be heavy on Guyville material, perhaps with a few highlights from Whip-Smart or Whitechocolatespaceegg.
Indie darling Soccer Mommy opens.
6/9: The Mavericks, Thalia Hall
Tex-Mex band The Mavericks have been perhaps at their strongest since their 2010s reunion. 2013′s excellent In Time may be their best album as a whole, while 2015′s Mono (mixed in monophonic sound) appropriately emphasized production over hooks. Last year’s Brand New Day veered a bit towards Americana--just listen to those powered out fuzz riffs behind the Tex-Mex on “Damned (If You Do)”. Even if the new record wasn’t as good as the previous two, it was at least a symptom of a band unwilling to stay put.
6/9: Live from Here with Chris Thile, Ravinia
Chris Thile’s done it all: played with acclaimed bluegrass bands like Nickel Creek and Punch Brothers, won a MacArthur Genius award, and covered Bach on a solo album. Now, he takes over for Garrison Keillor, who was accused of sexual harassment, on Live from Here (formerly A Prairie Home Companion). Special guests tomorrow night include guitarist Parker Millsap (who we just previewed), acoustic instrumentalist band Hawktail, comedian Tom Papa, and duet partner Gaby Moreno.
6/10: Traschan Sinatras, SPACE
Scottish indie pop band Trashcan Sinatras embarked on an acoustic tour last year. Now, they’re on their “One Night, Two Albums” tour, in which they’ll play in full their 1990 debut Cake & 1993 follow-up I've Seen Everything as well as selections from their more recent discography. Their last album was 2016′s Wild Pendulum--but I’d hope for cuts from 2004′s Weightlifting.
6/10: Simon Joyner, Empty Bottle
Omaha singer-songwriter Simon Joyner is the type to have laid back and made himself a steady presence in the Americana world. Those he’s influenced and collaborated with, like Beck, Conor Oberst, and John Darnielle, have sold more records than he has, but his music remains just as present. Last year’s Step Into The Earthquake followed 2015′s excellent Grass, Branch, & Bone, which we spoke to him about at length in our feature Palpable Pain.
Chicago singer-songwriter Gia Margaret and singer Angela James (joined by Jordan Martins of Quarter Mile Thunder on pedal steel) open.
6/10: Hop Along, Metro Chicago
We caught Hop Along’s intimate, energetic set at House of Vans last year after they had multiple years to iron out the songs from their great Painted Shut album. This time around, they have another excellent album to their name: Bark Your Head Off, Dog, released a couple months ago. In recording the new album, the band spent extra time in the studio, resulting in songs filled with strings, Rhodes, and complex, layered harmonies. The extent to which they’re able to replicate the album live is a selling point for seeing them just as much as lead singer Frances Quinlan’s incredible voice.
Ex Hex-offshot Bat Fangs opens.
6/10: King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard, Riviera
They did it. It was an ambitious promise, but Australian psych rockers King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard released 5 albums last year (including Murder of the Universe, reviewed on SILY). They were all good, but none as good as 2016′s truly nonstop Nonagon Infinity. Expect them to play from their entire recent discography minus Sketches of Brunswick East, which was released in collaboration with Mild High Club.
Melbourne rockers Amyl & The Sniffers opens.
Kylie Jenner got a very pink, very blond Barbie makeover for her 21st birthday
yahoo
It’s her party, and she’ll wear multiple pink outfits if she wants to, OK?
Kylie Jenner became officially old enough to drink legally on Friday, Aug. 10, but she kicked off the celebrations with a star-studded 21st birthday bash on Thursday night. And while the party didn’t seem to have just one overt theme — there was a ball pit, balloons, staff wearing T-shirts emblazoned with her Forbes cover, and plastic Solo cups for booze — the birthday girl was giving off major Barbie vibes.
Jenner first joined her sisters and other loved ones for a birthday dinner that appeared to have a dress code demanding short, sparkly, candy-hued outfits worthy of Studio 54. For Stormi Webster’s mama, that meant a hot pink minidress with a exposed midriff, power shoulders, and plunging neckline — not to mention icy, platinum-blond hair. Go-to Kardashian hairstylist Chris Appleton confirmed that the “futuristic golden Barbie” look was his handiwork and not a wig.
But why settle for just one Barbie-inspired birthday outfit when you can have two? As guests like Caitlyn Jenner and Dave Chappelle gathered for the second half of her party, Jenner changed into a glittery, baby pink getup that can only be described as disco-ball-meets-SoulCycle, with a splash of Paris Hilton.
She paired the curve-hugging outfit with a matching purse, pink suede Christian Louboutin heels, and mile-long hair extensions.
The final touch: a mini Kylie Barbie doll wearing the same outfit. Life in plastic, it’s fantastic.
Good morning! I hope you slept well and feel rested? Currently sitting at my desk, in my study, attired only in my blue towelling robe, enjoying my first cuppa of the day. Welcome to the weekend!
As I didn’t drive to Sainsbury’s on Sunday (because of the snow), I went back there yesterday, to get more tins of tomato soup and more tins of tuna for my favourite new snack. For those who don’t get it, tuna & tomato soup tastes a bit like a tuna and sweetcorn pizza (minus the cheese and sweetcorn!)
Once I got back from the supermarket, the 61-year-old man (#realagechallenge) went for a three-mile walk and very pleasant it was too! I suddenly realised that Costa Coffee now plays no part in my life whatsoever. When I worked at MTV, I used to walk to work and stop in Costa for a cuppa (and to use the toilet!) Now that I no longer drink milk, I have no need for their frothy creations. I guess, if I ever go back in there, I’ll order a ‘flat black’. After all, their cakes are wicked!
Last night, I did another Zoom birthday call. Brilliant fun! His friends played his favourite tunes and interviewed him about his life. It was interesting to hear him talk and reminisce, but he’s only 50, so he’s just a teenager! Another friend of mine had an online birthday party the other night that finished at 7.00 the next morning! Listen, we have to make our own fun! As the government messed-up the pandemic, we are stuck indoors for a while, unless of course you’re the prime minister’s father, then you can do what you want! (White privilege at its finest!)
Look forward to your company tomorrow afternoon at 1.00pm for ‘The A-Z Of Mi-Soul Music’. The Letter W (Part Seven). Have a fabulous and funky Friday! I love you all.
And, remember, don’t just read my words, buy one of my books, read it and review it! And, when Lockdown is over, I promise I will come and read to you!
Turn It Up: New Music Releases for March 2017
Wow, is it really already March? My how time flies! The sun is coming out and the music is turning on. We’re almost into Spring, and that means happiness and sunshine and new albums to groove into Summer with. AND we get FIVE weeks of music this month!!! I’m so excited to dive into March, and in just a few more words, you’ll see why…
Ed Sheeran - Divide
Release date: 3/3 This little ginger is a sensation. If you had asked me when he first appeared whether he’d reach this kind of superstar status, I probably would have laughed in your face. To me, Ed Sheeran was meant for those of us that found his little guitar songs on our Discovery playlists and cherished that sound in our headphones on our own.
Then, obviously, it all changed. He was no longer the secret dork that girls like me loved and boys used as background music at hipster gatherings. Ed Sheeran has become a clear household name, and I’m already afraid I won’t get concert tickets for the inevitable US leg of his next tour. This third album is one of the most anticipated so far this year, having been announced the first day of 2017 after a year-long hiatus for the singer from music. So far, we’ve gotten three very different songs as releases. “How Would You Feel (Paean)” is the latest release, very much in the vein of “Thinking Out Loud” if you’re looking for romance. It’s soft and slow and lovely.
The first two we got to kick the year off were quite different though, even just from each other. There’s a debate over which is better, and there are different strokes for different folks on these. “Shape of You” has become the club and radio hit really, spending the past five weeks atop the charts. It’s great and funky and incredibly appealing. “Castle on the Hill” was the flip of this, with incredible nostalgia and perfect movement (gee, I wonder which one I love more). It’s a story with a beat and will get you moving effortlessly through your day with a remembering smile.
Needless to say, Friday March 3rd is an important day. Yes, I already have a listening session (or 5) planned, and will be spinning my pre-ordered vinyl that night and all weekend. I look forward to sharing thoughts on this one for the month to come.
Other 3/3 releases:
Minus the Bear – Voids
Temples - Volcano
The Shins - Heartworms
Release date: 3/10
The Shins is one of those bands that I always kick myself for not listening to more, so in seeing a new release listing for them this month, I’ve got to jump on board.
If you can believe it (I can’t), this is their fifth studio album, but their first one in five years. Beyond that, I don’t have much info to share, so I’ll turn to the songs we already know about.
“Mildenhall” has been made public, and it’s fun and deep. There’s a steady clap beat that's fun to bop to, but if you start listening closely, you’ll start feeling a bit much. It’s great though, don’t get me wrong, and if this is an indication of where we’re heading with this album, it’s going to be a great one to dance around the apartment to. A little lower in scale, but just along the same lines is the 2016 release of “Dead Alive,” also on this album.
“Name for You” was released as well, and is how the album will begin. There’s some great harmonies to be heard here, and while I don’t love the idea of it as an opening track (purely based on feel and opinion), it’s a good solid album track for sure. The musical approach on this is no less than fascinating, and it actually feels like time and work were put in – what a rare and special treat.
Other 3/10 releases:
Greg Gaffin – Millport
Nathan Fake - Providence
Depeche Mode – Spirit
Release date: 3/17
Depeche Mode is always deceptively dark. Like, I don’t get that feeling until we get pretty far into a song, but I slowly realize how draining the songs can be in such a weirdly fascinating way.
I say this while listening to “Where’s the Revolution,” the release teaser from this album. It’s meant to have a dystopian feel, and by god they got that one on the mark. Lots of boots marching and flags waving basically sum this one up.
For an electronic band, Depeche Mode is far from the ones I think are typically associated with the genre. They take on the mood that metal tends to give, but keep the sound that a goth dance club might possess. For a band that’s been at it for close to 40 years, they have every right to completely define their own genre at this point, and seem to be continuing to do so with this new release.
Other 3/17 releases:
Real Estate – In Mind
Spoon – Hot Thoughts
Jethro Tull – The String Quartets
Release date: 3/24
It’s just not fair that there is not more information on this in general. I stray from other reviewers so I can develop my own opinion, but I can’t even find background.
What’s fascinating to me is that down to the titles, this looks interesting. Everything seems to have a main title and then something in parentheticals as a further explanation (which may be why there is so little written out – maybe the music really is just supposed to speak for itself).
This is gorgeous though, and if you’re ever remotely interested or looking for something modern yet with a classical sound, this is where to find it. Everything we’re given so far from this album is solidly performed and produced. I’m never left with a feeling of mistakes or regret for hearing it, as the sound is so clean. I also never realized before this just how very appreciated that sound could be.
Other 3/24 releases:
Boss Hog – Brood X
Pailbearer - Heartless
Nelly Furtado – The Ride
Release date: 3/31
I know – you’re probably having the same thought that I am now, which I also had last time I heard that Nelly Furtado was releasing an album – she’s still around?
Well, yeah. She had found that groove with dance music a few years back with “Promiscuous,” and since then seems to have actually found an interesting balance between the extremes of that and cute girl music. “Flatline” straddles it, giving a love song with movement, but I’m not already grossed out just by the thought of a sweaty club.
This is Nelly’s sixth album actually – go on, pick your jaw up off the floor there. She did almost all of the writing on this, so massive respect there. She’s described this herself as her “hangover album,” since it’s reflective and a way of purging from rough times for her. That said alone, this is going to be worth a listen.
Other 3/31 releases:
Goldfrapp – Silver Eye
Trace Adkins – Something’s Going On
