U.S. Congressman Juan Vargas joined with other local community members, civic and elected leaders in demanding the immediate end to construction of two 30-foot-tall walls that will replace current fencing at the Friendship Park area diving Tijuana and San Diego on Friday, March 17, 2023. — There are currently two layers of 18-foot border barrier that enclose Friendship Park, with Border Patrol controlling the gates to the historic meeting place for families who can’t cross to see each other. Those gates have been closed for several years. The new construction plans, initiated by the Trump administration and continued under President Joe Biden, did not originally include gates. But activism spurred by the collective Friends of Friendship Park last summer caused Customs and Border Protection to pause the project for stakeholder meetings over the design. Since construction restarted, Friends of Friendship Park has continued to call out the administration, saying that the modifications are not enough to preserve the essence and intended message of the park. I arrived way past dark, but people were still working out on the rusty parkour under the light of the revolving lighthouse. A stones skip away from the wall. Where the wall meets the beach and the sand meets the Pacific Ocean, 100 white flags and 100 wooden factory shoe molds perfectly stood in formation on the sand representing the aspiration for peaceful transit of the migrant across the border. The installation ‘Your Footprint is the Way, Your Flag is Peace’ at Friendship Park, Playa de Tijuana had renowned artist Bessabe Romero place 50 of the flags on the Mexico side and 50 on the American side. The foot soldiers were donated to the artist from a closed down shoe factory in Mexico. Originally installed last May, on the border between Ciudad Juárez, in Mexico, and El Paso, the next stop will be Agua Prieta and Douglas, Arizona. I read a somewhat alarming statistic that in 2017 an estimated 250 million people will live in a country other than their origin, a 45% increase since 2000. An exhibit of the artists earlier this year in DC opened with words placed on a red wall “… With their hands of clay, with their weather beaten feet. A new border fence construction has begun at the U.S.-Mexico border on Tuesday, March 14, 2023 that will replace existing fencing at the Friendship Park San Diego-Tijuana area, which for years the park has served as a meeting point between the two cities for those families unable to reunite due to their immigration status. — The border replacement project will cover several miles of fence that divides Mexico and California, which began under the Trump Administration. The construction is expected to last six months to completion. The fencing installed will be a 30-foot and 18-foot tall section barriers. According to Customs and Border Protection (CBP) the construction will not impact the Friendship Park meeting point—which has been closed for many years now due to the condition of the existing fencing. Immigration advocates worry that it only makes the area “less friendly” and can harm the environmental ecosystem that has been planted by binational garden organizations that have beautified and maintained the park area on both sides of the fencing.
