Okay OCverse question time: you mentioned that 'wedding rings' in your universe aren't rings but something of your spouse's eye color. What causes the eye colors then? if it genetics or magic or personality?
sorry im just now getting around to answering a few questions in bulk lol but its mostly genetics, but your magic type can change your eye color later on. you arent born with any specific type of magic, its something you can choose to do later on and you get to pick which youd want to do, so it wont impact the traits you get born with even if it changes them down the line. personality doesnt play into it from an in-universe perspective, i dont intend to go full mlp on this, but in terms of out of universe design choices stuff like that will impact the color i feel fits them best! more happy-go-lucky characters may get yellow, the more intense ones red, cutsie ones pink, etc. but there are also characters that subvert those expectations

heyy!! I'm noticed u post a lot of dragon age, I've been looking for a new Big Game to play, and have been considering it!!! So, don't feel obligated to answer this if you don't want to for any reason, but which game do you think would be the best for a beginner? Ty!
Dragon Age is heavily plot-driven and has lots of lore so it’s best to play the games in their chronological order:
Dragon Age: Origins
Dragon Age: Awakening (it’s an expansion for Origins that takes place after the events of the main campaign - it’s not necessary but it’s quite long so it’s worth playing it through)
Dragon Age 2
Dragon Age: Inquisition (i don’t know if you’re interested in DLCs for any of the games but if there’s one DLC that’s a must-have, it’s Trespasser - it is basically the true ending for Inquisition and shows some very important events and lore that will be relevant in the upcoming game)
I’m not completely sure whether you mean “beginner” in the meaning of someone new to the universe only, or also someone who’s not sure of handling the gameplay, but DA isn’t really challenging, especially if you set the difficulty to the lowest. DA: Origins introduces you to the mechanics and if you follow the tutorial, you should be fine! In case you need any help with combat or anything else, there’s an expansive DA wiki that should be able to help.
What I can recommend personally is going into the games blindly, without getting spoiled about the plot and decisions. It’s the most fun to see the consequences of your decisions unfold, and there’s a bunch of plotwists and surprises in the games as well.
If you have any further questions, don’t hesitate to ask!

whenever you are ready, I would LOVE to hear about why each roommate pair was chosen :3c
im SO SORRY this is like a week late but when it comes to typing long stuff it can take me a while to jump past that bridge even if i REALLY want to, its just the adhdyslexic way... BUT i finally typed it all and im glad i did :) im going to put it under the cut of course
I should preface this by also saying something I didn’t say before, the roommate pair system likes to follow a pretty strong “opposites attract” type model, it plays into the theme of duality and completion and “other halves” especially in regards to Iris and Crocus (The former of which having founded the school and set this system to begin with lol) so that’s something you’re gonna see a lot here. Anyway,
Amary and Rue are kind of a special case because since Amary was admitted into the school late and Rue was the only person without a roommate there was no one else to pair her with to begin with. But Rue is also special here, because there’s hardly ever been a student without a roommate from the get-go (Some people might drop out) but the crystal ball was ADAMANT about not pairing her up with anyone. At first Plumeria assumed it was because she’d be some type of problem child given her whole punk-rock thing, but in reality the crystal ball just knew that Amary would be admitted into the school later on. It can tell the future, it was looking ahead. Amary and Rue both needed each other to force the other to be better whether they wanted to or not.
Sorrel and Aloe also force the good out of each other, but rather than rivalry it’s the fact that both of them have a really strong genuine desire to become better people for each other and both feel a sense of obligation and protection to the other, so they really do help each other out a lot. They’re not perfect at it by any means because they’re still both dumb teenage boys but they make each other want to try
Carnation and Pine were paired together because their magic types are complementary and so are their ways of approaching them, they need to learn from each other. While Pine’s magic is all about innovation and the future, Carnation’s is very rooted in tradition and is seemingly set in stone. Carnation needs to adapt Pine’s sense of innovation to make something new with her magic, something only she can do. And in order for Pine to find constant inspiration sometimes they have to look back on the past.
Geran and Fennel seem to have opposite problems that could cancel each other out if they actually cooperated. Geran doesn’t let himself express his feelings while Fennel is overemotional, basically they just need to learn a middle ground from each other and become… A stable current. That’s a water pun AND electricity pun.
Musk and Gallica should seem obvious, beyond being siblings and they literally need to be touching in some way to use their magic in major ways. Not pairing them up together would have just been a dumb move. Not to mention the fact that the only reason Gallica was even admitted into the school to begin with is because of Musk.
Daisy and Protea were just both good fits for each other, their magic types seem unrelated but compliment each other well, one is incredibly passive and the other very active, which also reflects their personalities. They basically have what the other lacks in that regard, but unlike certain others they both get along incredibly well.
Maggie and Tam are childhood friends, so like Gallica and Musk it’s pretty much a no-brainer that they got paired together. But aside from that they can both be pretty hard to have as roommates for one reason or another, but since they’ve already known each other so long they already work really well together and make an incredibly dynamic team.
Hyacinth and Holly got paired together because no matter what Hyacinth says, Holly will always try to push them to be better, and no matter what Holly says Hyacinth will always stop her from doing something stupid. Together they can be competent wizards against their own wills.
Sun and Moon also got paired up together because the fact that they’ve known each other for so long makes them a better team, but also because they would have probably been too resistant to other roommates.
Cherry and Camellia got paired up together because Cherry has literally not felt fear in years so she’d have no problem rooming with someone who has basically ghost magic, and Camellia needs Cherry around as an example of how to be nicer and less gloomy all the time.
Zinnia and Pansy absolutely need each other to encourage the others jackassery, this MIGHT sound like a bad thing on paper but if you take their magic types into consideration it’s actually something that’ll help them both improve. That being said though, Pansy is the more responsible one with more chill vibes that wouldn’t let things to TOO far, and Zinnia needs that.
Bluebell and Heliotrope are partners because even though Heliotrope is very smart and capable, they’re also kind of an airhead that doesn’t work all too hard. So they need Bluebell there to boss them around and make them do work, and Bluebell needs Heliotrope around to show him how to relax for a bit and not burn out.
Fungus and Cactus got paired up together because Cactus has the most sort of parental personality, basically a “mom friend”, and that something Fungus needs since he’s younger and more socially isolated than most of his classmates, and Cactus is the other person who can look past his weirdness and just kind of laugh at it.
Violet and Cori are roommates for a similar reason, Cori can be very nice and supportive side, but she’s also a lot more laid back and it was important for Violet to have someone like that with her who isn’t completely overbearing like her brother.
Almond and Primrose got paired up together because Almond sort of lacks creativity while Primrose has an abundance of it, and stuff like that can be important when you’re a wizard and really affect the way you use magic, he basically has to follow her lead until he gets it himself. Meanwhile he’s also around to talk her out of her overly eccentric or complex ideas, sometimes simple problems need simple solutions.
Jonquil and Lavender got paired up together because Jonquil is easily a lot more athletic while Lavender is a lot smarter, they basically both have those qualities the other lacks. Jonquil isn’t the smartest and outside of his magic Lavender isn’t the most physical guy, in fact his magic requires very minimal movement despite being active, but they’re also both incredibly willing to help the other out.
Lotus and Bamboo are a good fit because Bamboo is someone who is simultaneously very active and vigorous but still very soft in nature, she’d need a roommate that can match that tempo, while at the same time Lotus needs a roommate who’d inspire him to be more active himself instead of just thinking: being a healer=being passive
Celosia and Heather were paired up because Celosia is pretty much one of the only people who wouldn’t give into Heather’s bossyness no matter what but still wouldn’t care enough to actually start any serious drama. She’s just indifferent, which is good for Celosia and also good for Heather, because she needs someone like that to keep her from getting a big head.
Delphi and Lisia were paired up together because Delphi really needs a partner who would keep her from going too far while also having strong enough magic to stop her if she does. And Lisia needs someone who will force her to be more assertive if needed, even if the need to be assertive stemmed from them.
Clove and Hazel are partners because Clove is someone who can talk Hazel down from being too eccentric about stuff while still not being too soft or too shy to deal with their antics, and Hazel is someone who can put Clove in situations that he hasn’t been in before, good and bad.
Nep and Buttercup are roommates because Buttercup has a need to be a “one of a kind” while Nep is a straight-up copycat, they basically are both incredibly annoyed with the other because of this but Nep has to learn that she’s her own person and Buttercup has to learn that the world doesn’t revolve around her, they just both force each other into that.
Cowslip and Ginger were a very obvious choice because they compliment each other very very well, both have southern themes and animal-related magic, they’re both two people that can just relate to each other and build functioning teamwork off that.
Viscaria and Arum are paired up together because Arum can help Viscaria take it easy while Viscaria can help Arum have more energy, both pumping each other up and calming each other down depending on what the situation entails.
Mint and Snowdrop are partners because both of their problems cancel each other out. Mint is overly paranoid and Snowdrop is kind of a jerk at first, neither of them would get along with ANY roommate. But because Mint steers clear of Snowdrop, Snowdrop leaves him alone, which in turn makes Mint less paranoid. They both have to learn to overcome these issues if they want to be a real team though.

OH I adore the upperclassmen u just added!!! also quick q, how on earth do you do your characters bios? bc I go insane with mine...I'm working on an oc bio right now and its 3665 words long and i havent even written out her extensive backstory or how her connection to her god works yet which are vital to her character...
THANK U!!!!
I have a hard time keeping bios short too I totally get that! Generally, to stop myself from rambling too long,  I just sort of get to the point with them, if that makes sense. I could spend days talking about a characters past and why they are who they are, but when it comes to bios there’s really no need to include all the details, only the important ones. You’re writing a bio, not their entire narrative, so you should cut down on the things that aren’t significant to why they are who they are. You don’t need to write her extensive backstory for just a bio, just get to the main idea!
Basically instead of writing a long story detailing every single terrible thing a character’s father has ever done to them and how that impacts their day to day life and relationships in depth, give us the gist of it! “X’s father was cruel and abusive growing up, physically and emotionally, which lead them to develop trust issues. This can make maintaining relationships hard for them, including their friendship with Y that can seem one-sided due to their standoffishness.” it’s just a matter of getting to the point, of course this doesn’t mean you can’t throw in details when you want to even if they don’t serve a grander reason!! You’re here to talk about ocs so talk about them! My quote above is an incredibly abridged example for just one thing anyway.
A good way to keep yourself on-topic is to think of it like organizing a small Wikia article for them with each paragraph being a sub-section. Talk about their appearance (if there’s no reference picture) in paragraph one, their backstory in paragraph two, their personality in three, their important relationships in four, and any misc stuff (like flower symbolism and magic) in five and six. That’s how I tend to do it at least but you’re free to format it however you like if you choose to do this too!
There’s no need to stick to the format too harshly though, you can mention other stuff in paragraphs because it’s not actually a Wikia page! It can be helpful if you also imagine you’re saying this stuff to another person. Instead of thinking about it like writing a story, picture yourself explaining it in a casual conversation, where you’re more likely to be brief and just give the gist of it as well as have a more laid back tone.
At least this is just how I personally think of it so I hope this helps still!

OC question: whats up with poppy? she looks like baby but she's also a monster and I am ver curious on what's goin on with her! :o
I had a post about her I was looking for but I can’t find it ;-; luckily I kept the doc so I’ll just copypaste lol
Her name is Poppy, just like all my other OCs she was named after the plant. Poppy flowers are a symbol of sleep, peace, and death, a lot of this symbolism comes from the fact that opium is extracted from them. However despite these connotations it’s considered a pretty flower, with a cutsie name too, which I think fit her really well. The use of red and black colors in her design is also reminiscent of the flower, just look at it!
Poppy (the character) is the “daughter” (Not biologically, but rather a creation) of this word’s equivalent to the devil. She was created to help bring him back, but also created... Kind of out of spite, kind of just to see what would happen. See, he would always make twisted monsters, he thought it was fun, and putting a monstrous spin on his sister’s “humans” was kind of like a last “fuck you”.
Poppy herself is not human because humans have souls. She’s doesn’t have a soul. But she looks like a human, acts like a human, has emotions and thoughts like a human, she even grows like a human, so it really brings up the question of what constitutes as a human, and that ties in to a more... Philosophical I guess, overarching theme. People may see her as a monster, because monsters don’t have souls. But other than that she’s basically just like any other human. So, in a way, that makes her... A doll.
Pretty much the main theme or biggest motif of the story is heirship, becoming what your parental figures or those you look up to are, by choice or otherwise. This theme is present in EVERY character in some way, and Poppy is FAR from the only character to be treated like a doll, in fact that same theme is used for Holly, who has some slight parallels with Poppy for this reason (Not to mention they’re both red, but Holly has soul magic, SOUL magic, the thing Poppy lacks)
Poppy is like her “father’s” doll, created to help bring him back as well as a last “fuck you” to Iris, kind of just to mock her creations. She’s a cocky little overpowered brat, but she’s also a very young child that’s been manipulated into this role. Even her powers are doll-based, specifically puppets, she can control and manipulate people like THEY’RE puppets. It’s kind of ironic, she’s the one really being manipulated but she doesn’t even know it, and her powers are entirely based on manipulation of others. She’s a puppet that has her own puppets.
Her personality is kind of like that of a normal kid, she’s impatient, impulsive, short-tempered, playful, and mischievous. However, she's also been encouraged to act malevolently, cruel behavior is rewarded, and treating people as if they’re her “toys” is just seen as normal. She’s a child with immense power, that alone is enough to make a kid coy, but rewarding them when they use this power cruely is going to result in.. Well, a monster.
She was raised by an order that wants to bring Crocus back, she was like their little gem, and her mother figure was Lobelia (lobelia flowers symbolize malevolence so that should give you an idea of the kind of person she is), and she’s pretty much been molded into the perfect little demon for their plans, she was always being used. Lobelia is the only person Poppy would never hurt, because she both fears her and is incredibly attached to her, she really is like an abusive mother. In all honesty, she’s the real monster.
Poppy is... Still a little girl though, she’s been lead to believe that once they finally bring Crocus back she’ll be like a “real” daughter to him, she has this fantasy in her head where her father is a good person that’s been wronged, that once he comes back it’ll all she’ll finally be allowed to do whatever she wants. She thinks she’ll be like a princess (Hence her outfit), and that Crocus will defeat his “evil” sister and everything will be right with the world again.
But that doesn’t happen, he doesn’t care about her. This fantasy where a father figure comes back to her and showed her the genuine love she craves just isn’t a reality, he rejects her. And that... Just kind of breaks her heart. And it DOES lead into a redemption arc, and her EVENTUALLY getting a proper father figure who was also missing a daughter. But the MAIN take-away from her story is that she has just as much humanity as anyone else. Humanity isn’t about whether you have a soul, it’s the ability to feel, to love, to grow, to show care and compassion, to be your own unique being. Sometimes the worst monsters are those who actively renounced that.
Iris, the God of this world, made humans. She made humans because she dreams of a life like that, a life where you can grow up, a finite life. She may be benevolent, but she doesn’t consider herself human, because she lacks the most human trait (in her eyes at least). She’s always going to be one thing, but by the end she sees that maybe… She can “grow” too. This is the person that Poppy has focused all her hate on for years, redirecting all the trauma she has faced at Iris, believing that it’s Iris’ fault for sealing her father away. And yet, Iris is the first person to tell Poppy, outright, she’s not a doll, or a monster, or a demon. She’s just a human, a little girl that still needs to grow up.

OOOO smth i'm curious abt popped into my head, do you always create a character then name them or do you ever choose a plant and look at its symbolism, go "I could make an OC out of this!" and do the reverse? or smth inbetween like have a general idea then select a plant and develop from there?
usually i have an idea for a character first and then i try to find a plant with symbolism that matches them, and bits of the plant also help inspire other aspects of the character for more development. but sometimes i read abt a plant w some really cool symbolism and im like oh i cant not make a character based on this. and when i finally get to draw them thats when all the ideas in my mind become something more concrete !

hey finn!!!! if ur still trying to figure out how to divide ur Big OC Masterpost, could could divide it into sections!! Like have a post for each class, then the family members, then for the villains, for characters that existed in the past, etc: and then on each post u could include some general info about each group!!! and then have ur main post be hyperlinks to the smaller posts
that does sound like a good idea! i think it would be cool if i did posts/pages for like different aspects of the world and stuff and had one post/page where i link them all. my only issue w that is that theres some overlap between categories so its easier to just have them all be on One place

so new oc verse q: you may have answered this already, but how do the roommate pairs happen? Is it random? do the students do some sort of test and then they put them together based on compatibility and/or how they could grow off each other? what happens if a roommate pair just doesn't work at all?
You were partly right with the second guess! H.A. really really runs by the crystal ball system to predict the best outcome, it uses the students test scores and interviews to rate their compatibility as roommates, not in how well they’d get along but how well they’d help each other grow too, which sometimes results in NOT getting along at first if both partners are pushing each other. Of course it’s not a 100% perfect system, certain students (Read: Heather, Delphi, and Snow) are hard to pair up with people at all, so you have to settle for your best bet, and a lot of it also comes down to how you sort the classes so there are a few levels at play. If a pair ends up being a complete disaster the first thing they’d have to do is have a few counseling appointments with either Juniper or Belladonna since they’re the two counselors. If that ends up not working either then the only choice is reassignment, of course that becomes an issue because most other kids wouldn’t WANT to switch roommates so they try to fix the problems first.
I could get into why each pair was chosen but its 5am so if you wanna know id love to answer that tomorrow lol :p

OCverse question! While scrolling thru ur OC masterpost thing, I noticed that all the student's ages were all freshman age (unless I somehow missed them lmao!). So, are there upperclassmen? If there are, are the grades kept separate enough that they don't interact? what if someone skips a grade? :O
Yeah all the students ARE freshmen age! Because the story for them takes place throughout all four years of highschool, so by the end they’re about 18. They can intermingle with other grades just fine outside of class, but their parts in the story will be a lot less permanent and mostly minor, which is why they aren’t included in the list so far! All the students on the list are classes 1, 2, and 3 of the (currely) freshmen class, and they interact a lot more since they share a dorm building and since after freshman year they’ll be allowed to go on missions with classes outside of their own but within their own grade. The in-universe explanation for this is that the students have to get used to working with a smaller team before expending, but the meta reason is that 16 is already a big cast and I would need to get the audience familiar with the main characters and only passingly familiar with the side characters first. Once I’m done with that I can integrate side characters into story beats easier!
There ARE students that have skipped grades, H.A. accepts a 1-2 exceptional students into each freshman class per year.  In class 1 it’s Musk and Gallica (Mostly Musk, Gallica is just there because their magic is a package deal so… They made an acception), in class 2 it’s Fungus and Violet, and in class 3 it’s Ginger. They all fit in fairly well but I think there is a degree of a sense of social exclusion that comes with being younger than your peers, they have each other though!
