"David Gilhooly made his first ceramic frog during a friendly mug-making competition among classmates at the University of California–Davis. This inspired the artist to create a whole civilization composed entirely of frogs, ranging from Napoleon-inspired frog busts to frog-Egyptian gods. Gilhooly originally thought about making pigs, but decided not to, stating: "The trouble with making a PigWorld rather than the FrogWorld was that pigs are 'loaded.' That is, people have a lot of negative ideas that are attached to pigs...." In Merfrog and her Pet Fish, Gilhooly refers to one of his favorite themes, fertility, by creating an absurdly voluptuous frog surrounded by devoted singing companions." Til We See the Sunlight: Stede really didn’t expect to make it here. (Figure skater AU WIP collab with Claire and Moss!)

like a bird: When Stedeth-Esgarrouth-Bonnetil was a very young Andalite, he thought that he’d like to be a dome ship when he grew up. (prequel to the Animorphs AU, collab with Petrichorca!)

Desert Bloom: The bud was absolutely beautiful, and Stede had never seen a saguaro bloom like this: all huge and skin-pink, delicate blush at the base and deepening to a dusky, dark red where the tips of the petals came together at the point, and he needed to get a closer look—he wished his camera could capture color, because goodness, would anyone believe them? I’m about 3/4s of the way through Amphibia S1, and I don’t know about the fandom other than @cosmiquealiene who recommended it, but I really feel as if there isn’t as much “filler” as other fans seem to think.

Most of it doesn’t move the “How do we remove the human from the frogworld” plot along, granted. But it is extremely important to developing Anne as a character. Many of the episodes revolve around peer pressure and not doing something just because it’s “in” or a way to get ahead. The show explores these themes in silly ways, but I think they’re really valuable lessons to teach kids because they help them think critically about relationships.

And on a story level, it helps us see that Anne isn’t a bad person just because she’s not always a good friend. She’s a good person whose friends seemed to have dragged her into this world, and she’s living with that mistake while also not understanding what exactly went wrong. Not to mention that when Sasha girlbosses the entire Toad Tower into obeying her, we can clearly see where Anne got a lot of her “manipulative” characteristics from.

Also, as an aside, I appreciate so far how it doesn’t demonize parental authority completely. Hop-Pop still learns new things from the kids, but it’s not the ageist “Ok boomer” bullcrap I see perpetuated online so much from people who don’t understand the value of good parents and all they do for their kids. (And because this is Tumblr, I will make the obligatory disclaimer that I am NOT APPLYING THIS TO ABUSIVE OR NEGLECTFUL PARENTS.)

Anyway. I’m just liking the show a lot. The fact that it doesn’t make me want to strangle the characters in the first season says a lot.

The girls have certainly done a lot of growing in frogworld, but. Hm. There seems to be a pattern where each first overcomes a "challenge" that does not prompt any groundbreaking feats of self-reflection because it slots easily into her existing self-schema:

Anne earns Wartwood's respect by Doing The Right Thing.

Sasha gets a high-ranking military position thanks to her People Skills And Kickass Heroism.

Marcy becomes renowned in Newtopia for Solving Problems With Her Intelligence.

Then she faces an actual challenge, one with the potential to really shake up her worldview:

Hop Pop buries the music box, upsetting Anne's belief that adult guardians will always act in her best interests.

Percy and Braddock jump ship, forcing Sasha to reckon (...very slowly...) with the fact that her controlling behavior can drive people away.

Andrias, uh (cough) happens, and Marcy is confronted with the knowledge that she can't think her way out of every problem.

Rule of three! It's everywhere.

Makes me wonder if Amphibia functions like Homestuck or Infinity Train—if the fantastic elements (like SBURB, like the train) exist for the express purpose of triggering character growth.

If this isn't so, but the assumption of psychological worldbuilding still holds, then I suppose these are internal struggles: Anne knows that adults aren't perfect, Sasha knows that sustainable friendships aren't built on control, and Marcy knows that she can't fix every problem in the world—they just don't want to admit it to themselves.
