Stars Live Preview: 4/13, Lincoln Hall, Chicago
Tumblr media
BY JORDAN MAINZER
Like for many bands, the past few years have thrown a wrench in Stars’ plans. Yes, the Canadian indie rockers had planned to record their most recent album, last year’s very good From Capelton Hill (Last Gang), live with everyone in a single room in early 2020. (Of course, that didn’t happen.) The band also postponed tour dates last fall for mental health reasons, only the second time they purportedly had to do so for any reason in their 20+ year career. Well, the hardworking sextet--who have found a rejuvenated relationship with their fans through Patreon--are finally coming back to town. Tonight at Lincoln Hall, they’ll celebrate their career, playing from Capelton Hill and beloved records like Set Yourself On Fire and Heart.
A week from Friday, the band is also releasing a deluxe version of From Capelton Hill with remixes of five of its tracks from an impressive variety of artists. Death Cab For Cutie’s Benjamin Gibbard provides a bopping, yet atmospheric turn to album closer “Snowy Owl”, while excellent indie punk band Illuminati Hotties chop up “Pretenders” into a skittering hyperpop thump, albeit one that unexpectedly changes tempo two-thirds through. New Zealand alt-pop band Yumi Zouma turn "Back To The End” into a dark, propulsive club track, as do London’s Real Lies with “Build A Fire”. Perhaps the most impressive remix is by multi-instrumentalist and composer (and SILY favorite) Joseph Shabason, who adds his saxophone, synth, and guitars to and strips the vocals from “If I Never See London Again”. It’s the rare remix that actually takes a dance-oriented track and makes it more abstract and textured.
Opening for Stars is Toronto R&B/soul artist Lydia Persaud. Doors at 7:00 PM, show at 8. Tickets still available at time of publishing.

Music I Liked in 2022
Every year I reflect on the pop culture I enjoyed and put it in some sort of order.
2022 was a good music year, alt/indie rock-wise, anyway. I found that each season brought a different favorite, so much like last year, trying to rank them would be quite arbitrary. Once again, I’ve put my recommendations into three tiers as well as a couple bonus categories for further listening.
Tumblr media
Here’s a playlist of songs from my top 15(ish) records for your sampling pleasure:
Tier 3: Worth A Listen
Belle and Sebastian – A Bit Of Previous
A quite catchy and fun return-to-form from the Scottish indie rockers.
Dayglow – People In Motion
For his second record in as many years, Sloan Struble leans back into the electropop of his debut, resulting in the poppiest and most consistent Dayglow release yet.
Dermot Kennedy – Sonder
While not quite as folk-inflected as his debut, Kennedy’s sophomore full-length is a solid and soulful collection of lovelorn pop jams.
First Aid Kit – Palomino
Sweden’s Söderberg sisters latest LP features a great collection of sweeping pop anthems and lush harmonies.
PUP – THE UNRAVELING OF PUPTHEBAND
This record from Canada’s PUP is a super meta and darkly comic blast of pop-punk energy, featuring imagined meetings with record executives and existential ruminations on life as a professional musician.
Tier 2: Appointment Listening
Anaïs Mitchell – Anaïs Mitchell and Bonny Light Horseman – Rolling Golden Holy
Hadestown creator Anaïs Mitchell had a busy year, releasing her first solo album in almost a decade in January and then a sophomore album with Bonny Light Horseman in October. Both are lovely collections of poetic folk-rock.
Beach Bunny – Emotional Creature
Following up on 2021’s excellent Blame Game EP, the second full-length from Beach Bunny is a great mix of pop-rock tunes, by turns introspective and propulsive.
Metric – Formentera
The latest from synth-rock powerhouse Metric is another excellent blend of indelible hooks and Emily Haines’ reflective lyrics.
Spoon – Lucifer On The Sofa
I’m not a Spoon megafan, but their latest record is an undeniable mix of rootsy guitar riffs and grooves that stands with the best of their catalog.
Tall Heights – Juniors
Juniors is a bit more pop-oriented and less folky than their previous efforts without losing their signature transportive soundscapes.
Tier 1: Highest Recommendation
Alex G – God Save The Animals
A fully-realized synthesis of Alex G’s most melodic songwriting and quirkier impulses, God Save The Animals ruminates on subjects of faith, love, and the beauty and darkness of the human condition. As compelling and mysterious as ever.
Bartees Strange – Farm To Table
The sophomore LP from idiosyncratic singer/songwriter/guitarist Bartees Strange is an adventurous fusion of styles and influences, with affecting personal lyrics including reflections on subjects including his experience as a military brat, the pandemic and the death of George Floyd.
beabadoobee – Beatopia
A lovely bedroom pop record that recalls female-fronted 90s dream pop and alt-rock, Beatopia feels both familiar and fresh, like making a new friend you feel like you’ve known forever.
Stars – From Capelton Hill
Very much a pandemic record, the latest from Canada’s Stars is nonetheless beautiful and moving, with resonant themes of loss, isolation, connection, and through it all, the slightest glimmers of hope.
The Wombats – Fix Yourself, Not The World and Is This What It Feels Like To Feel Like This? EP
I hadn’t fully connected with Liverpool’s Wombats before, but their latest full-length caught my attention with a collection of hook-laden tunes evocative of the 90s Britpop explosion’s best. The companion EP from later in the year is no less catchy or popsmart.
BONUS! Other Favorite EPs of the Year
Khruangbin & Leon Bridges – Texas Moon
Following on their Texas Sun EP from 2020, Khruangbin and Leon Bridges’ latest collaboration is another smooth collection of tuneful psych-rock, culminating in personal song-of-the-year contender “Mariella.”
Of Monsters and Men – Tíu
I’ve fallen off on OMAM a bit over the past few years, but this EP commemorating the 10th anniversary of their debut is a compelling reminder of what makes them special.
DOUBLE BONUS! Streaming-Only Albums
So, I’m very much an outlier in how I listen to music, preferring to buy physical copies of albums rather than paying for streaming services. As such, I use the likes of Spotify mainly to preview records before purchasing from the artists and since its free version only allows shuffle mode on mobile devices, I end up not spending as much time with albums I don’t own.
I really like each of these records but as I hold out hope for CDs or vinyl someday, I have yet to buy digital versions and haven’t listened enough to slot them among the other picks above.
The Big Pink – The Love That’s Ours
Ethel Cain – Preacher’s Daughter
Gungor – Love Song to Life
John Van Deusen – (I Am) Origami Pt. 4 – Marathon Daze
Taxes – Retirement Home

Note
2 and 20 for the asks!
2. Album of the year?
Augh. Choosing to interpret this as only including albums that came out this year, because otherwise it would be impossible. From Capelton Hill by Stars
20. What’s something you learned this year?
I wrote my thesis this year, so I learned a lot about the two plays I was writing about and the scholarship around them and the life of Thomas Kyd and the cultural situation that both of those plays were being written in!

Stars at The Foundry 12/10/22
The annual Christmas Stars show in Philly was as magical as you would expect. The last night of their tour and we all know how that goes! Their standard setlist from this tour with a surprise in the encore.

Fairytale of New York
Feeling a bit honored that Philly was the last night of the tour but we definitely made an impression last year. The venue is the smaller room of the Fillmore which made it very intimate. (There was a wedding downstairs which Amy gleefully let us know that they had crashed earlier.) Someone brought a bunch of roses that made their way to the stage at various times. Amy kept putting a few in her bosom so that was fun. And Torq would take some and destroy them to splay petals all around.
This setlist had the first song they ever wrote (Counting Stars on the Ceiling), their new Christmas song (Christmas Anyways), and lots of highs (Take Me To The Riot!) and lows (Dead Hearts - just a bummer of a song really). But it wouldn't be a Stars show without running through a gamut of emotion. Their shows have always been a gut punch to me because these songs mean so much to me. They have brought me hope and love and devastation. Sometimes all in the same song! Surprised that I didn't cry through a few of them but I guess the joy surpassed the sorrow in this instance.
Some moments for the ages:
Torq telling us that he's kind of a person that likes the middle. Not the beginning, not the end, but the middle. Where we were at that moment. "I just want this forever. Right now. Forever."
Amy telling us about crashing the wedding downstairs and the bartender telling them "You're the fun girls!"
Amy telling us "You guys are the best singers" during Ageless Beauty.
And the lovely acoustic version of "My Favorite Book" to start off the encore.
Can't wait until next year's show!
P.S. lots of video on insta!

“Capelton Hill” by Stars
DV:
There are pitfalls to parasociality, but there’s also something wonderful about the way the recorded and performed output - the lives - of artists can intertwine and grow with our own. It’s worth nothing that the opposite can be illuminating in its own way: where we diverge from songs and singers we loved years ago tells us a lot about who we are now. But when an artist manages to still speak to you years after you first fell in love with them? That’s rare and precious, a minor miracle of humanity.
This is part of why it feels so draining to learn that a band like Stars - who have been putting out glorious, cathartic, unifying music for decades - can’t tour without losing massive amounts of cash. Not long ago, touring was how indie artists made their money, the way they recouped the costs of recording and releasing music. Something’s gone terribly wrong when mid-tier (respectfully) artists like Stars can’t make a living on the road, even when they’re booking and selling out their venues. “The end never ends/ It just might not last,” Torquil Campbell and Amy Millan sing together on “Capelton Hill,” and that seems true enough. “But it's a start/ Hand to heart,” the song concludes - a characteristic note of optimism in the face of overwhelming odds. I hope we’ll get to sing that defiance together forever; I know it grows more precious and more precarious with every year.
MG:
“Capelton Hill” goes to places I absolutely wish it did not, as a piece of music. The productions (I’m going to argue that there are two, too distinct) sound like templates, the most syrupy expressions of their designated genres. The verses have the buried thump of original flavor synthpop -- think the distant drums of Ultravox’s “Vienna” -- and the chorus is the starry-eyed, folksy jangle of original flavor adult contemporary -- Peter Gabriel’s “Solsbury Hill.” If you’re reading this and thinking “Why not, MG? Two great flavors that taste great together!” you’ll get yours when you press play. Like an ice cream cone studded with rock hard, frozen solid peanut butter, juxtaposition is not enough to generate pleasure. The chorus blurts abruptly from the end of the verse, a crude collage. And yet! It all sounds really boilerplate, too.
It’s not for me, that’s fine. It’s very seductive to think that each band earns their audience and that, hey, look, maybe this band lost money on their tour because people just aren’t into it anymore. I don’t think it really matters whether anyone likes “Capleton Hill” because it’s fully a song and Stars did the exact job they’re theoretically supposed to be paid for but in the end, they lost money on this whole process. I find it really outrageous that we’re all supposed to be skeptical that art has any monetary value and that we accept this idea of artists as public servants, pay commensurate to pleasure generated. Everyone should be well paid and free to do whatever they deem work. I know the world doesn’t believe this; I know I’m doing the written word version of “Capelton Hill.” I hope that Stars are able to tour again, but, honestly, their fans face the same mounting challenges, so expecting them to pony up when they also have to buy food and gas and shelter is not the solution.
